One of the greatest documentaries I have seen we should not forget this is in 1970 no gadgets or drowns or self-automated cameras, excellent camera work, and whoever prepared this expedition.

I'm an entry level fan of Himalayan mountaineering. I've seen Meru and a few other recent doc/ adventure films including Konrad Anker's discovery of George Mallory's body on Everest. This however is just mind blowing for it's cinematography!!! And way before stabilized gimbals and hi def digital cameras. And, this being an all Japanese team, the narrative is very sublime and Oh So Very Japanese. Very well done!!! This is going into my library for sure.

Yuichiro to the remaining Sherpas. "Those six lives were lost in attempting to achieve a great thing, it was fate". I'm sorry but risking people's lives so you can ski down Everest is a stupid ego pursuit from a clearly conceited man. Those Sherpas' lives were lost for no good reason. Telling how Yuichiro is so philosophical about the deaths of 6 men who were merely only trying to feed their families. The looks on their faces said it all. None of them really believed his ego mission was worth the cost. Yuichiro is still alive. I wonder if he sleeps well.

    • @dco1019
      @dco1019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

that seems like a weird thing to say indeed after people die on your personal expedition.. though in terms of what happened its probably not much different from Sherpas losing their life on any expedition in the Himalayas. its all ego driven... climbing a mountain with not much on the top except the view to just climb down again is not really different from skiing down... you know, actually skiing down is quite a bit more purposeful cause at least you had 'a reason' to climb up there.
and the sherpas are just doing their work... its implicit that lives can be lost whatever the expedition in the mountains.. whether they just wanna climb up, ski down or make a snowman on the top.

    • @barbarakempf761

Well written, but to call this an ego mission is outlandish. He too could easily have died. I also don't think that anyone should be climbing at 8,000m when 6,000m will. We have plenty of mountains in the U.S. and Canada, and in the Andes, the Alps, and all over.
But this is not the fight. This was not a vanity project.

    • @_Quack_Wack_

The heck? If tourists are spending more than enough money to be able to buy a nice car just to climb a mountain they could at least pay the Sherpas a decent daily rate. Average income in Nepal is about $22 a day. The least you should give them is that.

Krakauer describes the sound of the icefall as this cracking and groaning of shifting ice. Definitely the most dangerous part of the ascent. Many Sherpas have died there.

If that’s true that means about one year after you lost your legs you hiked from Kathmandu to the base camp of Everest about a 12 day hike and that route wasn’t established until 1952 or 53 by the Swiss. Then you climbed Everest and skied back down it with no legs in 1946 a time when prosthetic limbs were very primitive. If you actually accomplished this your name would be known by everyone! And the first double amputee to climb Everest wasn’t until May 2006.

The laser sounds when was falling and him narrating afterward....I couldn't help laughing!! I was pretty miraculous when he was falling down the mountain he didn't lose consciousness, but lost consciousness mid jump on one of his practice runs and still managed to land it. HAHA!! His Lotus flower didn't add the expected beauty and grace I think he was aiming for. The irony here is that what the Sherpas did was far more fascinating and jaw-dropping than his Lotus flower laser show.

The whole film features one guy professing to eat potatoes and some grains and the rest of the crew eating $26,000 of junk food but they're not skiing. I remember that day so well. I was in Chicago. You're right. I've known a lot of selfish people in my life. I'm a giver myself. If it were me, I would've told them that tipping was customary in my country and I'd have insisted on giving them more money. Poor people dont trek around the world and spend weeks or months climbing mountains. I can't believe how often wealthy people take advantage of poor people during their adventures. Just because they have dirt cheap prices for their services, that doesn't mean you can't give them more money as a tip.

@@Tomos_J-J I'm bashing TH-cam viewers, who claim that the Sherpas were basically murdered by the skiers. I'm saying that the Sherpas know what they are doing is dangerous and they hopefully know that poor people can't travel around the world to go on skiing and climbing adventures, therefore, they can afford to pay the Sherpas more if the Sherpas would only ask for more. Therefore, nobody other than the participants are to blame when people die doing things that everyone on Earth knows is extremely dangerous.
I'm also bashing TH-cam viewers for saying that the skier only fell and he did not ski at all, even though he clearly skied before he fell.
I then added my own thoughts on tipping the Sherpas in general. The Japanese are not the only people who don't tip the Sherpas. So, I agree with you. Maybe the Japanese should receive a pass, because tipping is not part of their culture, but what about all on the Americans and Europeans who take advantage of the Sherpas customs?
It's possible for two seemingly opposite things to both be true. Adventurers don't kill Sherpas, but they do take advantage of them financially.

The Sherpas should be paid a US$1 for every kg carried, per day. Sherpas not only need to feed their families but educate their children. The kg packed in would cut out non essential, non nutritious stuff like noodles etc. His wish that the valleys and mountain would be unaffected did not come true. It’s now the Worlds highest trash dump, littered also with around 200 frozen bodies. I see many women as low lying porters. They should be paid the same rate.
