    Do you piggy back?

In my opinion, the easiest and most elegant ruling is to always make the top disc count the same as the bottom disc, as long as the top disc does not touch the board in any way. My reasoning is that if the top disc is not touching the board, then it seems reasonable that the bottom disc is "performing the function of touching the board" in its place. If the top disc lies on top of two discs that are worth a different amount, then you round down as always in crokinole. I have played for 8 years now, and I've sadly never seen this happen.

That reasoning works for me. I like it cuz its simple :-) when I come to your house to play we will use those rules :-)

I agree. It’s an easy rule to follow and much less subjective, especially for a close call in the 20 hole.

Just got my board 3 days ago and had this happen on like the 3rd game! Brought this to a family gathering and it's been a hit. Thanks!

We had this discussion today at the World Championship officials meeting today (disclaimer: We are in no way representative of the National Crokinole Association, and their rulings). Although I argued that we should use the ruling of placing the top one on the board straight down, we came to the agreement that in the very unlikely event this ever happens we will count the top one as a 20 provided that it is fully supported by the bottom disc. Why? No one wanted to be responsible for trying to get the location of the top disc back on the board in exactly the right position - especially if it would involve trying to lean it in the 20 hole.

      Hey Allen,
Have you ever changed your mind about something??? LOL. I sure have and this rule is one of those things. I no longer agree with what I said in this video and I completely agree with the decision that you and the referees committee came to. It is one of the rules that I have suggested that the NCA revisit with the hopes of removing some of the 'grey'. Thanks for helping out as a ref :-)

A much easier rule to interpret might be to have the button on top be counted as if it were in the exact position of the bottom button.
This would leave less room for human error at the end of round point counting and in the 20 hole.
Alternatively the suggestion to count pucks not touching the playing surface as out of play would also be simple and easily interpreted, but has a much more dramatic effect on any one round.

Sorry, I don't know English and it is not clear to me in the video how to act in this situation, if you could clarify it for me in a text response I would translate it and it would be clearer, thank you very much, very good videos.

since the two stacked are touching each other, if the new shot touches the bottom one in the stack, it is a legal shot. (similar to touching ball in snooker....)

It is logical because the two opposing crokes are touching each other already... so you touch one, you touch both.

Why doesn't the NCA make official rules for these things? As the game's popularity continues to grow and more tournaments are played, it seems like there could come a time when this could be a big deal. I'd hate to lose a tournament based on an unofficial rule.

you aren't wrong. although crokinole has been around since 1876 as far as competitive crokinole goes it really is quite young. there is a light and shadow side to how relaxed the rules are. I agree that there are some rules that need to be clarified and I also hope that the rules never become so bogged down that it sucks the fun out of it. check out our video on the Hutch Daddy Principle and you will find another very grey area of the rules. I suspect that slowly there will be some rule changes made and I actually just had a great convo 2 days ago about this exact rule.

Alternative idea: If a disc is not in contact with the board it's removed from play and put in the gutter.

I personally don't love that idea but as always, I am a fan of house rules so... your house, your rules :-)

Button?! HOW are they not referred to as crokes? Isn't the object of the game to put the croke in the hole, hence, crokinole? Please start calling them crokes.... we will be in NS. It's the future of crokinole! Put the croke inni hole!

    • @TraceyBoards
      @TraceyBoards  2 ปีที่แล้ว

you make a very valid point here... they do get called crokes but apparently not as often as they deserve :-)
