  • Although I might be late to the party, join me as I show you how to explore Bangkok on the new MRT yellow line Monorail. Yes, there is a new way to travel in Thailand. The MRT Yellow Line Monorail opened to the public June 3, 2023 and today we are going to explore Bangkok using this brand new monorail here in Bangkok, Thailand. Since the MRT Yellow Line monorail is free for the first month, it's definitely getting a good workout. I will show you how to get a ticket, give a tour of the inside and outside of the train as well as give you facts and information on this exciting new monorail in Bangkok. Not only was this my first time riding a monorail, but this is also the first monorail in the country of Thailand. I will take you from one end of the line to the other. Then we will do some exploring in a neighborhood I have never been to before. I will also show you the soon to open final stop on the MRTA monorail yellow line. Of course I will get lost, as usual, as we wander around the Lat Phrao area of Bangkok. Ready? Let's go!

      Serge, at the end of the video, you were standing atop the Lad Phrao MRT station and all you had to do was go DOWN one floor on the escalator and go left (right takes you to the train) and VOILA! a concourse "M" grocery (like the one in the basement of Terminal 21, at least as big or bigger) opens up and instead of being like in Terminal 21 with all the Eats and Desserts out in front, they are INSIDE this grocery. The entrance is innocuous, so if you went down to take the MRT home, you might have passed it by. Nice coffee shops, every manner of bakery, fast wok kinds of food, soups, drinks, etc. Next time in the area, go stop by, it's a nice place to hang out a while. This is underneath, the northwest corner, which includes the many-level parking lot.
      From where you were standing at the end, go down the stairs and go right, about 60 feet (away from the intersection) and you will be at a very interesting soup place, open fronted. Very good soups there and their business model is interesting. It's quite popular and busy and all the servers, everyone working at the joint is running around, they don't do anything slowly. For me, I get a kick out of watching them do their thing.
      The Bazaar you found to be dead was on the other side of the street, the Bizarre Bazaar (my name for it) was fully built for and fueled by Chinese tourists and was hit extremely hard by the covid restrictions. It USED to have one of our favorite buffet restaurants, only 180 baht. All Thai foods. All handmade in classical style. They had different dishes each time we went and once they had the most delicious mushroom soup I ever had anywhere. Nothing in the soup but liquid and tasted exactly like pure Portobello's! I've tried to duplicate it at home but can't figure it out. They also have homemade coconut ice cream sometimes, heavenly. I do believe they now only have the buffet at lunchtime and it's 235 baht now, I'm sure still very worth it. My wife and I plan to go there soon and try it out.
      By the way, we used to live at "The Room", the next place after "The Landmark" that you showed and just past the 7-11, where I used to stop in to get my cheese puffs. The furniture shops only stand out because all the rest of the livelliness around there is gone, gone, gone after they started construction for the rail line. Elevated trains often REALLY mess up the businesses at ground level they pass and many never recover after construction is finished. There are areas like that all over the city and anywhere you see three or four metal shutters closed in daytime, it's a sing of that kind of decay. Just as in America, the trains stop at the big box stores and malls and glide right by the traditional Thai mom and pop stores I like to frequent. Send me an email danberman at ymail dot you know what. Not gmail. It's ymail.

    Another reason that people are so excited about it is, in my opinion, because it's been constructed for many years and makes traveling on roads more difficult in the late years. 😆 I was living in Lat Phrao but moved out for 4 years, one of the reasons is because of the construction. Now we can get our roads back and get new transportation as well. cheers!
    PS: Lat Phrao is one of the most traffic jam districts in Bangkok. Since the road is 10 km. long and has been a living area since 30-40 years ago.

    Thanks for the information. I am very impressed that Thailand has grown a lot, public transportation in BKK is now more available and convenient than it was years ago. When I went to college in BKK more than 30 years ago, there were only bus, tuktuk, and taxi.

      It would’ve been really cool to see Thailand 30 years ago. The last time I was here, before moving here, a year ago, was in 2012. And even in those 10 years I can see some vast improvement. I’m excited to see what the public transportation system will look like here in five years

      I had one as a rental for three days on Ko Samui. It was actually the ADV 150. I still want to go look at the ADV350. Monday is street cleaning day in Bangkok. That is why you will not see any street food vendors on Mondays. Also, a number of shops choose to close on Mondays. I think one of the main reason so many shops were closed in this area is because the construction of this monorail has really screwed things up for some of these residents over the last four years.

    Been in BKK for 22 years and always drive everywhere. It's too hot to walk long distances, the public transport is too disjointed (see the 1.6km walk to the MRT station) and I find motorbikes lead to smelling of traffic all day, getting sunburnt, and you end up stuck with your helmet unless you have a bulky helmet box on the back.

    • @LifewithSerg
      @LifewithSerg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only reason I had to walk was because the new station wasn’t opened yet. Anyhow, I can definitely see a case for having a car here in Bangkok. I had a friend with me her car for three weeks when she was out of the country, however, only use it for trips out of the city. I think it just depends what part of Bangkok you live in as to whether or not, you can actually Justify owning a car.

    • @benzakonium
      @benzakonium ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LifewithSerg Understand that the station wasn't open, but that's just my point - the public transport isn't there yet. In 5-10 years it should be great. It's still so dispersed though unless you live in the CBD and wanna go from one mall to the next! I live out in the suburbs and it's useless for me. As long as you plan well traffic isn't an issue. Of course it's always going to be a pain at rush hour, but if that's avoidable then it's really not an issue.

    OMG Serge, those wires (I presume they are phone wires?) are driving me up the wall! Excuse me but what an eyesore! You will never find those in Malaysia, at least from what I've seen so far. We used to have power poles all over the neighborhood and each home will also have exposed water drainage in Malaysia but these days they are all buried or covered, a good thing to reduce mosquitoes. How on earth do they service those wires? Instead of trying to figure out which is which, just add more to it? 😂😂

    • @LifewithSerg
      @LifewithSerg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      These are all either low-voltage or telecom wires. I have no idea how they service them! I thought the same thing before. There’s no way to figure out, which is which when you have 60 or 70 of them. My thoughts are exactly the same, they must just lay a new wire. My understanding is they’re going to try and get them all underground. They’re only an eyesore for the first month or so, and then you just get used to them and you don’t notice them anymore. Lol.
