- Swift, again. P and G plant in Browns Summit, NC. I'm not sure if they turned him away at the gate, and told him to do something, then get back in line, or what?
There's not enough room to do a U-turn in the split entry/exit roads, and he found out.
New driver, old driver? WHo knows? Sooner or later you learn to judge the space you need to turn around, or at least learn to go look for a bigger space, or a safer option.
This driver left P and G, and headed into an adjacent parking lot for a different warehouse that didn't look like it had much room to turn around in, also.
There aren't many places to turn around, but you can get back on US 29, head north or south to the next ramp, and reverse directions. - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ

I graduated from a ten week truck driving school in 1991 and one of the classes I remember was called "Truck Physics." Schools need to start back to teaching that again because from what I've seen a lot of drivers need it along with a dose of common sense....
All of the people with dash cams are such perfect drivers...
Probably not, but they're more likely to be aware if they screw up, somebody else may have video.

wow after a night of watching and laughing at swift.. I applaud this one and only swift driver for actually getting out of a bad situation without pedal to the metal to rip through every obstacle.

Had a job back this little alley last summer we had to get equipment into, no place to turn around anywhere even remotely close! My lowboy is 51ft long with the tandems fixed all the way at the back, I had to swing way out wide pull up to the curb back up pull up to the stop sign back up and pull through and barely missed the curb with the trailer, pissed all kinds of people off! I loved it!!
If you have a CDL license, there is no excuse for this. When training, remember when you had to swing wide to make a turn from a narrow lane on to another street?
Whether it's right or left, he should have moved up more to gain more clearance, swing wide left and then recover. He cut the turn too early.
That was real swift.
What makes it so funny, A person who never even drove a tractor trailer would know that he or she wouldn't make that turn, to top it off the person driving that truck was probably proud of there self for being able to back out of the situation. Lol

Today. Kind of spells it all.
I followed behind a SWIFT truck early one morning in thick, thick fog until I observed drivers brake lights come on and the fool did a U-turn on that stretch of road. I put on my 4 ways and watched and waited for "his" oncoming traffic(If any) to smash into that rig. Fortunately and miracously their was no oncoming traffic to slam into him/her. I don't know what to say about SWIFT trucking and their drivers. I'm sure shit happens with all trucking companies, but Swift is a whole different breed.
A U turn is always risky, it takes a lot longer to complete than you think in a truck, and other traffic that you can see is moving faster than you guess. It's getting harder to find some place to safely turn around, but you're still better off crossing your fingers and looking for a shopping center or other empty parking lot. (and don't run over anything)

I just got my class B (so I don't know much about class A vehicles) but even I know that turn is a no-no.... i'd be laughing my ass off if this was my dashcam

i pick up out of brown summit occasionally. that's how you get back in line for rescale if you have to. imho they really should move the boulder back a little because they give you just barely enough room to swing around.

One thing drivers need to pay attention to are instructions by people at shippers and receivers. Every now and again they’ll give “odd ball” directions and stuff like that can happen.

+Bill005 About 8 years ago, a Werner truck dragged a concete barricade from the Flying J parking lot, all the way out onto the main street, before he coudln't go any further. The FJ at Carlisle, PA. One of those round concrete things they have around the fuel islands. He managed to find one in the car parking area, get it lodged under his trailer, and I guess he was hoping it would dislodge itself on I-81.

When you drove past it, it almost looks, deceptively, that you could do it. He should of got out and looked to see if he could make the turn.
I think he or she would have made that turn if the driver could have gone bit further then I think the it could have make the turn ... I'm just saying, I am a driver but I wouldn't have try it..

This driver was ok, no need to make fun of this guy. There was no damage done.
I do give the guy credit, noticed it backed out if it no damage. Others would of kept going and ran over stuff.

Been several years since I went to that location (at least 5 years). For some reason it looks different from when I was there last though. I thought there WAS a way to do a U, but then again, I may be thinking of a different place. Funny thing is, the camera view almost (note I said almost) makes it look like you could make a U there. The road angles are make it easy to fool a newer driver.
New drivers - Hint: make an imaginary line at 90 degrees to the sharp corner. If it isn't at least about 1.5 truck + trailer lengths or about 100 feet ... you will never make it and that is pushing it. In this case it looks like maybe 60-70 feet.
My guess would be that he got a dispatch to pull a load back out after he grabbed an empty and needed to get back in line to pick up. Dispatchers do that a lot. Instead of preplanning, they wait. My own company likes to do that. I've learned to call ahead and ask if I need an MT or if I am pulling a load back out ... before I get there.

I get the impression he was able to make that turn last time he tried. That is why the property manager put the boulders at the side of the roadway.
The rocks are probably there because they are tired or replacing the streetlight they are protecting.

does swift train their drivers or do they just put them in a semi and say go drive?
You have to go to a separate truck driving school and have a CDL first. Swift used to operate their own school, but I think it was shut down years ago due to 'problems'.
Now you go to a separate CDL school, then 'train' with another driver for a few months.
Sometimes that other driver has only a few months experience. This is not unique to Swift.
