In final year of my PhD at IIT-B. Totally relatable yaar all of these experiences are totally relatable. It is in this authority, i am saying that the Hindi guy (probably from Bihar) is 100% correct. The early you guide grill, earlier you will be done. Its just the matter of following a routine and think critically. Think a lot on evry line you read in papers. If you will understand things properly, then only u can identify the gaps to be filled in. At last, you have to own a shop. There are customers for both rajnigandha and jubaan keshri. Make sure it reaches to right audience.

@@arghojitsaha3568 congrats for so many options. Well, you should have proved by this time that you are really interested in astrophysics. In any case, it is always possible to go back to astrophysics, but of course the chances become less. You mentioned about the money part, which is equally important. Sometimes you develop love for a subject, only after you achieve something in that. This is mostly true in CSE/ECE engineering program, as far as I have seen. My friends too have many interest earlier in their lives, but most if them just regret it only verbally. They are happy with the money they make. This happiness is a relative term here. You can pursue your astrophysics as hobby. The other way too is fine, but not preferable in case of job opportunities. In any choice, remember there will be ups and downs throughout. So, please make sure you don't feel stuck after any decision. Make sure you not only fantasize about astrophysics but really care about it. Caring about it means you have to solve a real problem later on in that area, not only just studying and knowing what exists. Remember you can't love all the subjects and grow your profile in them concurrently. 😀 This is a truth needs to be accepted here. PS- my answer is not organised as you may notice. Sorry for that.
If someone is speaking in Hindi in an Institute based in Delhi, then he's probably from Bihar. I'm not correcting you anything on language and it's region, it's just a pattern which has always been existed from 90s. Academics can't change hard wired brain. Another Proof #294.
I haven't submitted my synopsis yet.. still my tchr suggest me to maintain 9-5 time at lab. Do study whatever you want. You can do research or prepare for anything else. But maintain that time. One thing that haunt us is surviving problem. We need money to survive. Without fellowship it's very hard bcz after some time you will feel dipression . Always stay positive. You choose this path bcz you wanted to do it.achhe chiz hone me waqt sacrifice Sab chahie. Just don't give up. Self motivation is the key. No one else gonna stay with you in this journey for long.
It's good to not give up but at some stage u will find yourself at that situation where u feel to cry loud but nobody will be there u will feel lost sometime ,u will feel demotivated, demoral and somehow u get to overcome this but at last if u don't get a suitable job or u will get it but it's not worth of your position you will regret coz real journey start after PhD there is no guarantee of getting a good job ... I know it's harsh but it is reality I'm not saying this in bad way afterall it's your decision but it is reality .... And then politics ka alg hi fanda h ... Anyway goodluck .

True, For a Ph.D. all you need is curiosity, asking 3 questions what? why? and how? So, before going on this long journey try to do several internships that will not only help you learn and enhance your skills but also help you to decide whether you should continue in this research journey.

2:29 This shows the aspirational value difference between NASA and ISRO despite the fact that indian youth is super patriotic. ISRO and govt of india should think how ISRO and such organisations can create/add more value rather than just positioning itself as gareebo ka masiha.

4th year CS PhD student here from USA. PhD provides the liberty to study on your own but that is both good and bad. The good part is that you can explore new things on your own and work on different research problems simultaneously. The bad part is most of those projects will fail and you will loose time dedicated to them but you will learn a lot about the pitfalls and avoid them in the future. One advice I would like to give is to pursue multiple projects through collaborations so that even if you are stuck in one of them you can get rid of your stress and anxiety by progressing in the other projects. Indian PhD students tend to work only with their supervisor in the lab. Try to build connections by working with others outside the lab. I know that building collaborations is tough but you can start off by collaborating with fellow labmates/postdocs, researchers from the same institute or even researchers from the same country who know about your work a little bit. Once you have established yourself people would love to collaborate with you provided you are leading the project.

Try to do masters from top institutes like iits, opt for theoretical physics as masters project and now u are good to go for phd. Though I am from computational chemistry background my area of research is based on machine learning. So I guess theoretical physicists do use machine learning and deep learning for their research. Anyway machine learning is now widely used in many research areas.

Actually I have interest in doing Research and publishing papers because the results that we can achieve would be very impacting, but I do not want to be a professor, and getting a job after that is also too difficult, what can I do ?
I feel the same being a bsc student. There should be some system so that non academic talented people can also try to write papers like part time work. Or at least switching between other profession and research should be possible. But if wasting 10% of one's lifetime is mandatory then it makes one think twice.

If you get a paper published in any reputed journal (not paid journals) or in an international conference in your masters, your chance to get selected through phd interview will be very high. There are so many IITs and IIITs, all are having phd courses. Many phd holders are getting teaching jobs in these indtitutes, specially IIITs.
If you do a Ph.D. in the US, you have to take courses and also do well in qualifying exams. It takes much longer. It is shorter in Europe and India. A lot depends on your guide. Do Ph.D. in the field you enjoy and love reading/learning.
Not true. Indian PhD students have to also complete breadth and depth courses and give the qualifying exams (aka comprehensive exam) which are much tougher than the qualifier exams in USA.

I am in IISc. Completed 3.5 years in my direct PhD with zero gaps. I am about to start my thesis writing.

U r doing PhD from which institute ?
Don't take tension sister
Ek din aap sabse aage rahoge jo apke abhi aage h...
Hang on there ma'am you can do it in a better way
It's good to not give up but at some stage u will find yourself at that situation where u feel to cry loud but nobody will be there u will feel lost sometime ,u will feel demotivated, demoral and somehow u get to overcome this but at last if u don't get a suitable job or u will get it but it's not worth of your position you will regret coz real journey start after PhD there is no guarantee of getting a good job ... I know it's harsh but it is reality I'm not saying this in bad way afterall it's your decision but it is reality .... And then politics ka alg hi fanda h ... Anyway goodluck .

So, before going on this long journey try to do several internships that will not only help you learn and enhance your skills but also help you to decide whether you should continue in this research journey.

Me abhi final year undergrad hu and a project student at TIFR. I do have previous experience in research and few works published. I enjoy learning new things particularly in different aspects of Physics and apply Machine and Deep Learning concepts in it.
So can anyone please give some suggestion on how I should proceed.
Are lower IITs fine for Masters in Physics.
I could qualify both GATE and JAM and can land up with lower IITs.
Though I am trying for direct PhD yet in worst case scenario is it fine to do pursue Masters?

Actually I have interest in doing Research and publishing papers because the results that we can achieve would be very impacting, but I do not want to be a professor, and getting a job after that is also too difficult, what can I do ?
I feel the same being a bsc student. There should be some system so that non academic talented people can also try to write papers like part time work. Or at least switching between other profession and research should be possible. But if wasting 10% of one's lifetime is mandatory then it makes one think twice.
you can do part-time phd or mtech
Writing papers are not limited to academicians.Anyone can write and try to publish journals or apply for patents.

Plus an mtech from NITs or BITS will help
If you do a Ph.D. in the US, you have to take courses and also do well in qualifying exams. It takes much longer. It is shorter in Europe and India. A lot depends on your guide. Do Ph.D. in the field you enjoy and love reading/learning.
Not true. Indian PhD students have to also complete breadth and depth courses and give the qualifying exams (aka comprehensive exam) which are much tougher than the qualifier exams in USA.
