You are right about Sheldon. He not only had a schedule, but he could also expect to go at the same time every day. That is the sign of someone who has a schedule of what and when he ate. He also had a shelf of breakfast foods in their galley kitchen which I am sure were high in fiber.
As someone who was diagnosed with a brain tumour at 39 even though I ate a fantastic organic vegetarian diet, exercised loads and was extremely careful about what I put in on or around my body I can also say that it was stress that I think triggered the tumour. Making and keeping boundaries has become part of my recovery. Unfortunately society doesn’t encourage this in girls growing up. Thanks for an enlightening conversation 🙌🏻
Stress is HUGE!!! However I would advise you to look up Dr. Joel Wallach and his thoughts on nutrition... I was vegetarian and suffering health issues as well... I found out that because my diet had a lot of grains especially gluten and I was cooking with oils that my health was suffering... Dr. Wallach talks about how we need to be using natural fats (butter, tallow etc) for cooking... That we definitely need lots of fruits and vegetables and go easy on the grains... No gluten! There might be an argument for the bread this doctor talks about, a living organic fresh sourdough bread, but that is all! Highly inflammatory! And one of the most nutritious whole foods we could eat is beef. He talks about the strong benefits of liver and bone broths and how we should be consuming this daily... When my hair was falling out in chunks after my first born I started using his supplement pack (90 essential nutrients)... He truly believes that our diet no matter how well we eat is not enough to keep our body functioning at a high level...The soil that grows our food is devoid of nutrients because of how badly we have treated it over the years, therefore if the nutrients don't reach our food then it doesn't reach us... So if we don't give our body ALL the nutrients we need just to function properly then there is definitely no way that our health can thrive. I was ill, and depressed until I started supplementing and the difference was shocking... Even if you don't get the supplements just doing the other stuff I mentioned should be enough to get most people on a healthy path... Do everything you can to reduce inflammation (tumeric, omega 3, spriuline, MSM supplements, green tea) going outdoors more often and limiting EMF exposure... I had HORRIBLE insomnia until I was told to unplug my wifi router at night... and then like magic my sleep improved dramatically... The supplements was also a HUGE help for my sleep as well... MAGNESIUM is SUPER important as well! I wish you well on your health journey, all the best!
I’m the living prove that what’s said today by Dr. B here is TRUE. As a colon cancer survivor myself I can say (along with my own GP doc) that my cancer came after the most stressed days of my life, when anxiety was at its top ever level, after my brother’s sudden suicide, an absorbing stressed working days, burnt out syndrom and disordered junkie food. Cancer was the worst ring alarm my body could ever had sent me. Learning to deal with grief, stress and anxiety by mindful meditation along with a drastic diet change helped chemo a lot! I’m 33, my teens, my 20s were spent seeking alternative methods of healing after being scoffed at by the rheumatologists, gastroenterologists and allergists. I have an autoimmune disease and gut issues. Hearing that the science had not caught up technology-wise in time to address my issues was so validating!!!!! And I’m so glad there have been advances. This podcast was the final step I needed to go whole-food plant based. Also making this entirely possible is my VITAMIX because it makes the most delicious smoothies/juice and more. I have finally figured out that crushing a giant kale smoothie (fruit, kale, anything else I put in) is like the best thing ever for my gut. I’m eating half a bushel of kale a day now. Not sure how I could handle eating all that fiber otherwise lol. I’m super stoked that increasing fiber can reduce my inflammation through short chain fatty acid production. Now that I understand the science behind fiber and the probability that it can alleviate my inflammation I’m all in.
I used to do the exact same thing with my Vitamix kale/fruit smoothies almost every day…. But I now suffer from kidney stones. Kale is high in oxalates, so I have to wonder if that’s what caused my stones.
@@calisongbird I heard this about kale and really looked into it, it’s not to bad, not like spinach. I put half lemon in my green smoothies, it prevents kidney stones.

I've been a gi nurse for 15 years and this is stuff we've been talking about with patients. It's so nice to see it become so much more talked about. I gave my favorite gi doc a mug with the Bristol stool scale on it. She still uses it!
Everyone processes food differently. Being “Gluten free” when I ate soup in a sour bread bowl I got extreme stomach pains after eating some of the French bread bowl. White flour constipates me. I do not normally eat bread, even gluten free, so my stomach was not used to it. Another reason I cannot eat pizza crust which gives me constipation for days.

This podcast was so refreshing unlike the podcasts on 100% paleo diet enthusiasts whom I do not relate to because I’m vegan. Im also gluten free not because of any diagnosed celiac disease but because I feel bloated and irritable when I eat gluten.
I watched fork over knives & when whole food plant based diet the next day. That was 2018 still vegan. It was easy for me because I felt so much better
Wow, this really hit home. I'm on a parp inhibitor(Lynparza), for my ovarian cancer and constantly feel my gut is in angry mode. None of my Oncologists from MdAnderson discuss gut health, ever. They just let me suffer and act like it'spar for the course. I've been eating far more fiber lately due to a chat with a random stranger who backed up what you're talking about. I had a similar experience with having SO many stomach issues that ended up being related to anxiety and stress. I felt hopeless until a holistic nutritionist helped me realize what was going on. Amazing how the mind and body connect.

Only just started this video and I’m so excited. I’ve been suffering with severe anxiety which has been taking a toll physically on my nervous and digestive system. I’ve been looking at what I can eat to help with my physical pain and hopefully find a way to decrease my mental pain. Can’t wait!

Question-in working with a registered dietitian (primarily for weight loss and lowering cholesterol), I was able to figure out that my body isn't fond of chicory. It's in sooo many things, particularly lower sugar yogurts, or my previous travel go-to, Kind bars. Would you suggest trying to add it back in? I've enjoyed not having a loud, twisted GI after eating, but would like to be able to add some things back in.
This is amazing!!!! I was diagnosed with gastroperisis last year after going through a divorce and it's continuously gotten worse as I struggle with the reality I'm having to start life over again! I knew my stress and anxiety had something to do with this diagnosis!!!! I can only eat eggs and popcorn and am losing so much weight that I cannot afford to lose. Everything else either makes me violently throwing up or causes severe abdominal pain and bloating that lead to constipation. I'm going to start looking for a psychiatrist and therapist to nip this in the bud! This has given me so much hope!!!!!
This episode is really something. I have been listening to Dr B so much recently, I almost forgot I first heard him speak with Mayim. Going back, it is startling to hear him say, "What the fuck is wrong with our system?" But I'm so glad to hear this, especially from reputable, inspiring prolific people like him and Mayim. One of the reasons I like listening to this guy is as a physician I did not place nearly as much emphasis on diet as I should’ve been. It makes me feel a little bit better than the actual G.I. would say the same.
This was such a great episode for me today. For someone who has struggled with bathroom issues for mostly all of my 69 years, I’m excited to read Dr B’s book. I have my own rating system for poo that I use. I note things on a wall calendar (yeah I’m that old) and good days are marked Nola (yep, Big Easy) to frowny face (nuggets). It helps me to not feel embarrassed about a natural human function.

I'm a little late to the party, but I very much appreciated this episode. I am always fascinated afresh when I try to get my mind around all the complexities of nutrition/stress/health. I've spent the last year and a half making big adjustments in my diet and trying to be mindful about what I put into me. Better health has come slowly and it is a process, but one I can say I have embraced. Jonathan...keep being the Canadian in the room. All rooms need this.
Thank you for alluding to the need for well-designed studies AND the links between gut health and mental state. I have been diagnosed with multiple food sensitivities, hypoglycemia and leaky gut. I also have reactions to industrial chemicals. Many of the items on the food list were ones that when green conventionally, tend to have higher % of pesticide residues. I also tended to develop symptoms within 2-3 days of eating those items, I had asthma symptoms that required meds. After a couple years on a special diet, I was able (w/ MD. & ND supervision) to ween myself off all of the meds. Yet, I identified an emotional component in my flower allergies (and perhaps my dairy sensitivity) and after a year of personal detox, I suddenly had almost no hay fever. So, I like this convo AND would like to hear more about the intersections among mental, emotional and physical health.
Because of watching this video, I'm going to try this. I'll just try fish for awhile and then phase it out. I've had leaky gut for years and have only had a handful of foods I can eat (reacted on blood test to 96 foods). I haven't been able to add anything back and still have pain. Thanks for this video. I'm hoping it will work.
Mayim. Maybe it's not gluten. Maybe it's flour. I find eating the whole food doesn't bother. Another point I've learned is that the poop doesn't have to be formed into a stool. We're just used to it. I've heard a good poop described as oatmeal like. I agree.
Is it possible to go on a high protein diet for months then stop and eat regular again and have an allergy to gluten? My 19 year old son is now “sensitive “ to gluten. He has begun to slowly reintroduce, but can NOT eat full blown bread or pizza..

I'm actually really grateful for the advertising, to be honest. There is SO much out there, I like having just heard about the 4 products within 1 and a half videos, of all the products I've become aware of, or solutions that are accessible, better health for example.
I was diagnosed with IBD (they didn't know if it was Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns), but what it actually was, was Vitamin C toxicity. I was experiencing chronic and consistent diarrhea...like I couldn't keep anything in me, I was going all day long. Because I had been living and working on a ship, everyone assumed my diet hadn't changed...but, we had been chartered out to FEMA and they loaded us up wiht palets of bottled water and "Emergen-C" packets. I had no idea that drinking multiple of them a day would make me ill....and again, no one did a full history to find out if there was any difference in my diet. And once I started having all day diarrhea, my thought was that clearly I need more vitamins. A year after I stopped drinking the Vitamin C, I could tolerate very little soluble fiber per day. I had to be really, really careful. It took me years to be able to eat insoluble fiber without really monioring the amount per day. The only thing that persists now, even decades later...is I can't tolerate whole kernel corn (even popcorn) this makes me soooo sad. But any time I've tried, even a little...my gut gets super unhappy, I'm in acute paid for a day or so, and I have terrible diarrhea for those couple days. Thankfully, I"ve mostly healed up.
I love Dr. B. And Mayim...however I felt like the interview was too cut and disconnected. So many commercials and when you come back it didn't feel seemless. I have listened to many of Dr. B's interviews and he is an excellent speaker with great analogies so I assume it's the cutting during production. Anyway...I hate being negative so I will end as I opened..I love what you both are and stand for and the world is a much better place because of all of you. Thank you
Absolutely fascinating, & so much hope there! My husband has tons of food intolerances (his parents did, as well as his mom having actual food allergies). He’s done elimination diets & found he feels better avoiding a number of foods, except he loves those foods (aside from the side effects). I’m definitely going to have to get Dr. B’s book & see how we can play around with our microbiomes for improved overall health. I think I had as many questions as Mayim - loved, loved, loved this episode!!!

I'm dubbing this "Blossom 'n' Bull". :-) Terrific. I have Dr B's book, it is excellent, even if you are already near plant based diet. My digestion is better at 65 than it was 50 years ago, when I was a typical burger eating teen.
Over the past few years, I have been looking at the food I eat and trying to match what might trigger a chronic neck pain. So far, I have nailed it down to higher salt items or nitrates/nitrites in foods like processed meat. The longer I go without some of these trigger foods, it seems to keep my neck in better shape. Certain OTC meds and topical ointments provide minor help with lowering the pain for a period but it rarely kills the pain completely, even in that moment. What I'm hearing in today's episode seems to gel in part with my own findings for myself.
Speaking also as a doctor I’ve been raised throughout my life knowing this and I find it Unfreaking believable that the news cycle can’t be able to talk it for more than 2 minutes a day.
For numerous decades, not years, decades, I have heard about “fiber” about four trillion times. Atkins was generally viewed as a nutcase by the media, the one guy who opposed “fiber”. How can meat eating tribes live healthy lives without fiber if it’s so important? I am not trying to be rude, I think most are good people trying to find answers. We should question everything. Someone mentioned the meat industry above, but there’s also a big grain industry as well. I am sure farmers and ranchers both manipulate media and government.
I especially like the notion that digestive problems, like blood sugar control, or general poor fitness (eg high heart rate from some stairs), benefit from 'going through it', rather than retreating from it.
Interesting. An experience here in Australia many elderly people can no longer eat wheat products. However, if they go overseas, depending on which country, they can eat wheat products. I have discovered I can not eat shop bought bread. I can eat home made bread. My discovery after some research was that it was not the wheat, gluten that was the problem but the preservatives added to products that give products longer shelf life for shops.
USA wheat has two alleles. I do not know about Australian wheat. I know European wheat is not modified in the same way. It's also one reason why so many people react to wheat in the USA. Again, I do not know why in Australia though. You are perfectly correct about the disgusting preservatives as well. In the US there are preservatives galore, including sugar, and in some cases literal poison to preserve bread. I would not eat even if I could.
Good points about isolation and gut health! I can relate to that! Hmm. I also recall feeling lonely and stressed around the time I had the blood tests that showed that I needed to shift my diet. (It was a long road, too!)
This was a great episode. I wonder how I would be able to eggs again. Everytime I eat eggs by themselves they make a revisit. However, I am able to eggs if they are cooked in foods ie. Bread, cake, etc.

Trying. 🤷🏻♂️ Beans are still cheaper than meat. We eat 220 lbs of meat per year and 6 pounds of meat. Could buy a lot more beans with that money.

Everyone processes food differently. Being “Gluten free” when I ate soup in a sour bread bowl I got extreme stomach pains after eating some of the French bread bowl. White flour constipates me. I do not normally eat bread, even gluten free, so my stomach was not used to it. Another reason I cannot eat pizza crust which gives me constipation for days.

This podcast was so refreshing unlike the podcasts on 100% paleo diet enthusiasts whom I do not relate to because I’m vegan. Im also gluten free not because of any diagnosed celiac disease but because I feel bloated and irritable when I eat gluten.
I watched fork over knives & when whole food plant based diet the next day. That was 2018 still vegan. It was easy for me because I felt so much better
Wow, this really hit home. I'm on a parp inhibitor(Lynparza), for my ovarian cancer and constantly feel my gut is in angry mode. None of my Oncologists from MdAnderson discuss gut health, ever. They just let me suffer and act like it'spar for the course. I've been eating far more fiber lately due to a chat with a random stranger who backed up what you're talking about. Your talk has been more of a light bulb moment causing me to kick my healthy food consumption into extra high gear. Thank you!
I had a similar experience with having SO many stomach issues that ended up being related to anxiety and stress. I felt hopeless until a holistic nutritionist helped me realize what was going on. Amazing how the mind and body connect.

Only just started this video and I’m so excited. I’ve been suffering with severe anxiety which has been taking a toll physically on my nervous and digestive system. I’ve been looking at what I can eat to help with my physical pain and hopefully find a way to decrease my mental pain. Can’t wait!

Question-in working with a registered dietitian (primarily for weight loss and lowering cholesterol), I was able to figure out that my body isn't fond of chicory. It's in sooo many things, particularly lower sugar yogurts, or my previous travel go-to, Kind bars.
Would you suggest trying to add it back in? I've enjoyed not having a loud, twisted GI after eating, but would like to be able to add some things back in.
This is amazing!!!! I was diagnosed with gastroperisis last year after going through a divorce and it's continuously gotten worse as I struggle with the reality I'm having to start life over again! I knew my stress and anxiety had something to do with this diagnosis!!!! I can only eat eggs and popcorn and am losing so much weight that I cannot afford to lose. Everything else either makes me violently throwing up or causes severe abdominal pain and bloating that lead to constipation.
I'm going to start looking for a psychiatrist and therapist to nip this in the bud! This has given me so much hope!!!!!
This episode is really something. I have been listening to Dr B so much recently, I almost forgot I first heard him speak with Mayim. Going back, it is startling to hear him say, "What the fuck is wrong with our system?" But I'm so glad to hear this, especially from reputable, inspiring prolific people like him and Mayim. We have so much to do to help people realize how unnaturally our society has them living, and that we all need to DO something about it, to help ourselves, and our families. One of the reasons I like listening to this guy is as a physician I did not place nearly as much emphasis on diet as I should’ve been. It makes me feel a little bit better than the actual G.I. would say the same.
This was such a great episode for me today. For someone who has struggled with bathroom issues for mostly all of my 69 years, I’m excited to read Dr B’s book. I have my own rating system for poo that I use. I note things on a wall calendar (yeah I’m that old) and good days are marked Nola (yep, Big Easy) to frowny face (nuggets). It helps me to not feel embarrassed about a natural human function.

I feel ya. I have had issues with mine since I was 12 yrs old. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but never totally fixed- 39 now.

I'm a little late to the party, but I very much appreciated this episode. I am always fascinated afresh when I try to get my mind around all the complexities of nutrition/stress/health. I've spent the last year and a half making big adjustments in my diet and trying to be mindful about what I put into me. Better health has come slowly and it is a process, but one I can say I have embraced. Jonathan...keep being the Canadian in the room. All rooms need this.

Thank you for alluding to the need for well-designed studies AND the links between gut health and mental state. I have been diagnosed with multiple food sensitivities, hypoglycemia and leaky gut. I also have reactions to industrial chemicals. Many of the items on the food list were ones that when green conventionally, tend to have higher % of pesticide residues. I also tended to develop symptoms within 2-3 days of eating those items, I had asthma symptoms that required meds. After a couple years on a special diet, I was able (w/ MD. & ND supervision) to ween myself off all of the meds. Yet, I identified an emotional component in my flower allergies (and perhaps my dairy sensitivity) and after a year of personal detox, I suddenly had almost no hay fever.
So, I like this convo AND would like to hear more about the intersections among mental, emotional and physical health.
Because of watching this video, I'm going to try this. I'll just try fish for awhile and then phase it out. I've had leaky gut for years and have only had a handful of foods I can eat (reacted on blood test to 96 foods). I haven't been able to add anything back and still have pain. Thanks for this video. I'm hoping it will work.
Mayim. Maybe it's not gluten. Maybe it's flour. I find eating the whole food doesn't bother. Another point I've learned is that the poop doesn't have to be formed into a stool. We're just used to it. I've heard a good poop described as oatmeal like. I agree.
Is it possible to go on a high protein diet for months then stop and eat regular again and have an allergy to gluten? My 19 year old son is now “sensitive “ to gluten. He has begun to slowly reintroduce, but can NOT eat full blown bread or pizza..

I was diagnosed with IBD (they didn't know if it was Ulcerative Colitis or Crohns), but what it actually was, was Vitamin C toxicity. I was experiencing chronic and consistent diarrhea...like I couldn't keep anything in me, I was going all day long. Because I had been living and working on a ship, everyone assumed my diet hadn't changed...but, we had been chartered out to FEMA and they loaded us up wiht palets of bottled water and "Emergen-C" packets. I had no idea that drinking multiple of them a day would make me ill....and again, no one did a full history to find out if there was any difference in my diet. And once I started having all day diarrhea, my thought was that clearly I need more vitamins.
A year after I stopped drinking the Vitamin C, I could tolerate very little soluble fiber per day. I had to be really, really careful. It took me years to be able to eat insoluble fiber without really monioring the amount per day. The only thing that persists now, even decades later...is I can't tolerate whole kernel corn (even popcorn) this makes me soooo sad. But any time I've tried, even a little...my gut gets super unhappy, I'm in acute paid for a day or so, and I have terrible diarrhea for those couple days.
Thankfully, I"ve mostly healed up.
I don't have it in my lexicon to properly express how much I loved this. Thankkkk youuu.

Absolutely fascinating, & so much hope there! My husband has tons of food intolerances (his parents did, as well as his mom having actual food allergies). He’s done elimination diets & found he feels better avoiding a number of foods, except he loves those foods (aside from the side effects).
I’m definitely going to have to get Dr. B’s book & see how we can play around with our microbiomes for improved overall health. I think I had as many questions as Mayim - loved, loved, loved this episode!!!

Such wonderful and reaffirming information. I can’t even tell you how sick my gut has been when I’ve had mood disorders or psychiatric episodes.
Over the past few years, I have been looking at the food I eat and trying to match what might trigger a chronic neck pain. So far, I have nailed it down to higher salt items or nitrates/nitrites in foods like processed meat. The longer I go without some of these trigger foods, it seems to keep my neck in better shape. Certain OTC meds and topical ointments provide minor help with lowering the pain for a period but it rarely kills the pain completely, even in that moment. What I'm hearing in today's episode seems to gel in part with my own findings for myself.

Meat and dairy have very powerful lobbies and lots of money
For numerous decades, not years, decades, I have heard about “fiber” about four trillion times. Atkins was generally viewed as a nutcase by the media, the one guy who opposed “fiber”.
How can meat eating tribes live healthy lives without fiber if it’s so important? I am not trying to be rude, I think most are good people trying to find answers. We should question everything. Someone mentioned the meat industry above, but there’s also a big grain industry as well. I am sure farmers and ranchers both manipulate media and government.

Interesting. An experience here in Australia many elderly people can no longer eat wheat products. However, if they go overseas, depending on which country, they can eat wheat products. I have discovered I can not eat shop bought bread. I can eat home made bread. My discovery after some research was that it was not the wheat, gluten that was the problem but the preservatives added to products that give products longer shelf life for shops.
USA wheat has two alleles. I do not know about Australian wheat. I know European wheat is not modified in the same way. It's also one reason why so many people react to wheat in the USA. Again, I do not know why in Australia though.
You are perfectly correct about the disgusting preservatives as well. In the US there are preservatives galore, including sugar, and in some cases literal poison to preserve bread. I would not eat even if I could.

Good points about isolation and gut health! I can relate to that! Hmm. I also recall feeling lonely and stressed around the time I had the blood tests that showed that I needed to shift my diet. (It was a long road, too!)
This was a great episode. I wonder how I would be able to eggs again. Everytime I eat eggs by themselves they make a revisit. However, I am able to eggs if they are cooked in foods ie. Bread, cake, etc.
