Usually chrome items have a nickel layer underneath it so you would have to strip off the chrome then plate that nickel layer.

You surely can gold plating something! Almost all of our customers have never plated before and we have made it as simple as possible for your convenience.
You can plate almost all metals with this set up. Brass, bronze, silver, copper, nickel, gold, palladium, steel, stainless steel etc. The only main metals you cannot plate onto will be aluminum and zinc - these will require an industrial plating company to apply a Bright Nickel plate for you, which you can then gold plate.
