How good condition should the chrome be to begin with? Can I prep the chrome surface with 3000 grit to smooth it out? Old motorbike. Can you do a video of different condition parts and prep methods for comparison. Awesome machine, process and finish. Cheers.
That is a great question, thank you! If the chrome is in bad shape to begin with, any imperfections, scratches or corrosion will remain after plating. With electroplating, you need to prep the surface prior to plating. 3000 grit may smooth out certain scratches or imperfections, it would need to be determined on a case-by-case basis. "Restoration" is almost a whole other artform of it's own. Some people can do amazing electroplating but have zero restoration experience. Important point is, you have to get the surface looking the way you want it to look BEFORE you gold plate it, the gold plating will not cover any issues up. So whatever you have to do to get it looking shiny and nice will need to be done, then you can follow this process. I hope that answers your question. Thanks for watching and thanks for the compliment! Cheers and best of wishes on your project, let us know if we can be of any help.
Great video, say for example, looking at a guitar, there are tuning pegs, screws, metallic looking strap holders, volume and tone knobs, tremolo arms; how is it possible to quickly determine whether they are nickel, steel, chrome, aluminium or any combination of these, or indeed, other metals? How do you then go about implementing processes that ensure gold-plating of these different metals and alloys? Thanks.
Wear? Will the gold stay put and not wear off? I am thinking of metal musical instrument parts that might brush against clothing and skin? How well will the gold wear?

No, automotive paint jobs are not affected by the chemicals. If there is ever a question, you can put a little chrome stripper in an obscure spot on the car, let it sit for a minute, then wipe it off. If it's not discolored it's fine. In 30 years we've never heard of it affecting a paint job.
What if the plastic emblem is not chrome at all. Can you still chrome or gold plate it?

I have a question is the gold solution you use have real gold?
I've been plating with their products for years. Yes, the solution has real gold in it. The 8oz of the 24K gold is around $300.
will it ruin a paint finish?
