My favorite was the Allen and Thurber pepperbox. Three barrel of course. I have a flintlock version of the derringer. You also forgot to mention that it was the derringer that John Wilks Booth used to assasinate Prisedent Lincoln with.

@@ArizonaGhostriders I dont know where you got that idea. I am an excellent marksman. I dont hunt because I am a big animal lover and vegetarian. I find it very distasteful to harm anything. However, when my livestock or birds are attacked by a mountain lion or coyote, I have not hesitated to dispatch the problem.
@CINDY'S PLACE I have a similar viewpoint. I don't hunt, not as long as I can buy meat at the store. I understand the argument about hunting being more humane, but I'd rather not personally kill an animal if I can buy meat that's already prepared. I just can't bring myself to inflict harm on an animal unless it's presenting a direct danger to me.
That being said, I'm very interested in the technical aspects of firearms and enjoy gunsmithing.
I've also had to use a pistol in a defensive shooting once before, when I still lived in the city. Thankfully, my assailant survived the 3 rounds of .22 short with medical attention. I guess that Beretta 950b Minx probably qualifies as a hideout gun.

@@ArizonaGhostriders I think those were called Apache knuckle duster guns . Despite the name , I think they were a French thing , and there was a French dance called Apache based on a French word that sounded similar . Maybe the knife blade was for slicing baguettes .

My nephew traded his favorite knife for a black powder Deringer at a rezendevous many years ago. Looked like J.W. Booth's pocket gun.
A beautiful pistol and operated perfectly.
He then made the mistake of entering a shooting contest with it, and was promptly laughed off the range (the ball fell before it ever reached the target).
He got rid of it, which is a shame. It would've looked great on the wall. :)

I have a .22 Mag remington style Derringer and have actually taken squirels with it at about 25 yards. Once you get the feel of the gun, they are amazingly accurate.

Great video! Guns are a favorite topic. I have a S&W New Departure in .32 S&W, made in 1901. It needs a firing pin though, they are prone to breaking. A shame the 20th century saw so many rimfires, like
.38RF, .41RF and .32RF die out.
There is a Colt M1878 side-by-side in 10ga. for sale at the Guns International site. We could cut it down to 10 inches and make a Derringer out of it! 😜

I'm writing a screenplay that's a mix of old west/sci-fi, and I've been binging your videos ever since I came across your channel on a search for "What did cowboys eat?". The stuff you make is so helpful and entertaining -- thank you! Even the way you and your friends speak at the end of the videos (ie "Don't be rolling your eyes at me. I got the loading system for this puppy") serves as inspiration for my story :)

If you're interested, though, I did write s short story on the idea some time ago which will serve as the inspiration for my screenplay when I return to it shortly. That is one qute little revolver ! Great video. I take the liberty of sharing my first Derringer buy story. I ordered a .32 Derringer and proudly showed to my co-workers, one 'ol timer said: "You'll have to file the front sight" Now, I had heard stories that gun slingers filed the front sight to avoid hanging when draving so I asked: "Is so it won't hang when I draw?" "No" said the ol' timer "Is so it won't hurt when they put it up your a$$..." Also in the show "Pawn Stars" They said that the word "Derringer" was created to countour Mr. Deringer pattents... Y'all keep ai it !

Yes. Guns like mine didn't make it to America during the Old West period, but it shows that weaponry like that was prevalent all over.

That hideout pistol could be a distant relative of the Colt in Supernatural that can kill anything except for 7 things or the two Breathing Guns from Marvel Comics.

Love the little pocket iver johnson and h&r pocket revolvers in 32 and 38 s&w, you can find originals in pretty good shape for not a ton of money (due to being the Saturday night special of its day).

I have always found the derringer and pocket pistols interesting. I may have to build one from a kit one of these days.
I have always wanted to do that. Read reviews saying that they need some serious work and the kits are rough.

I have a few “hold out guns” but my favorite is not historically correct. Is a short barrel NAA 5 shot in 22short. It would not help much in a fight but it’s a fun gun.

Dallas DautermanDallas the 22wmr has significantly more horse power. The 22 short is the very bottom of power for a powder fired firearm.

I used to actually carry one of those 32 Smith and Wesson top break revolvers when i was 15-16 then i sold it and got a h&r a few years later I might get a new one soon I definitely miss that little guy

I read Maddie Silks wore tailor made dresses that were custom made to hide coins and her derringer. As for derringer kits my Dad has a CVA derringer kit that he got years ago. He hasn't built it though.
Interesting about Mattie. She died only 90 minutes away from me. The kit guns may be tough to build i understand.

If I'm not mistaken, the second R was added to guns not made by Henry Deringer's design to avoid legal trouble (although it took awhile for that to have any effect)

I just picked up a 1849 Colt Pocket.

If it is in shootable condition, rather than having to cast round balls for it, you can buy a bag of lead OOO buckshot and shoot them. They should be .33 diameter so just make sure you see a shaved off lead ring when you press them in and you have a tight seal.

The second r in derringer comes from when people would copy them since deringer didn’t get a patent. People started to add the second r so that they weren’t using his exact name

Picked up a Colt 1877 Lightning .38 called a shopkeeper model, it was at one time in the 1880s nickel plated, and tuned. I wish I had some documentation on who owned it and what his reason for such a fancy gun was. I use it as my everyday carry gun now.

Made me think of Bonnie Parker of Bonnie and Clyde. She was tiny, about 90 lbs and 5 foot tall. Yet she managed to sneak a .45 ACP in to a jail to give to Clyde,hidden in her clothing, unfound in pat down.
I carried that "Little Ace" around with me for a day. As small as it is, after a few hours I felt like it was pulling down my pants pocket and everyone could see its outline.
Guess hideout guns need some getting used to .

1:48 "An extra 'R' was added to the name. We're not sure how that happened." (Old west and firearm history buff here.) Henry Deringer founded a company which produced small pocket pistols under his name (collectively called 'Deringers') which became quite popular. Other manufacturers who came after and began producing small pocket pistols wanted to capitalize on that fame but also did not want to risk legal action by Henry Deringer for what we would today call 'copyright infringement'. Due to that, those other manufactures added the extra 'R' to the classification of their own guns and called them 'Derringers' so Deringer could not sue them while they still benefited from the name since the average citizen would never notice the extra 'R'. Probably wouldn't work today, but back then it was just enough of a difference to protect the newcomers from legal action.

Dallas Stoudenmire was a very proficient lawman with a deadly reputation. He was involved in El Paso's infamous Four Dead in Five Seconds gunfight. James Manning, a friend of the two men Dallas had killed in the fight, hired a former Marshal named Johnson to assassinate him. The marshal had a rivalry with Dallas and hid behind a wall with a shotgun to wait for him. Unfortunately, once Dallas showed up, a drunk Johnson tripped backwards and gave away his position when he accidentally fired into the air. Stoudenmire quickly drew both revolvers and fired towards Johnson, severing his, uh, "banditos 😐" which led to Johnson bleeding to death later. Hell of a gunfighter

My only actual gunfight,I used a .38 Special derringer,Cobra C38 based on the Remington model 45 derringer.
I'd never gotten it back from the police officer who took it for confirmation that it was really mine & probably has it in his pocket to this day.

Hi, Santee I am Spanish and my father told me about an ancestor of ours who lived several years in the US on the Border. He worked in a saloon and when returned to Spain he opened a tavern in Córdoba. On Sundays he showed shooting demonstrations in the city's surroundings for neighbors, firing with a revolver at bottles and coins. Can you tell anithing about Spanish or the Spanish language in the Border ?. Thank you. Greetings. Francisco.
Well that is some great history in your family.
The Mexican version of Spanish is probably very close to yours. I know that the Castilian "S" is pronounced differently.

More the "C" actually - Mexicans (and southern Spaniards) tend to pronounce it as "S" while in "textbook" Spanish it's meant to sound either "Z" or "K" (and southern Spaniards tend to pronounce "S" as "C" for added amusement value). But I feel that's not what Chico che is asking. I have the impresion he's wondering about how common the Spanish language was in the Border. (Quite a lot, I'd say, given how many Spanishism they had).

My great granddad brought a velodog revolver back after his time in ww2. Looks very similar to yours santee just with no engravings. They get the name velodog because they were designed to be carried by cyclist and others to ward off wild dogs
