My mom pulled into this awesome spot about 13, 14 years ago. Accidental find on our way back to Minnesota. We were told this was a real town, and all the buildings were original as well as the contents. That’s why things are blocked and caged off. I loved seeing the scuffs on the stairs where their spurs would hit as they went up! They had a “cowboy” walking around slowly shooting off blanks when we were there. I also still have my glass soda bottles from grabbing a drink at the saloon!! Thank you for sharing and bringing me back in time 💜

We came upon this town by accident 19 years ago while stopping to rest and eat on our way to the Black Hills. The train outside the town actually had a diner car where we ate our meal. Inside one of the buildings in the town was a place where we dressed up in old fashioned western clothing. The staff was very friendly and helped us choose the proper sizes, etc. They told us we could walk around and take as many pictures as we wanted. This routine stop turned out to be one of the best experiences of our entire trip. Your video brought back a lot of good memories. Thanks Russ.

Most of dances with wolves was filmed near Pierre. My ex-father inlaw was a truck driver who hauled green water based paint to the film set every morning for an entire summer. This was before green screen technology where they can change stuff with the computer at a touch of a button so they had to paint the entire prairie green everyday because the grass was brown and every night the dew would wash the green away. They had an army of people with backpack sprayers that would just walk to the horizon "spray painting" the south dakota prairie. He said it was the best job ever. Hed drive to the set before sun up, park the truck and go eat breakfast while the movie hands would unload the truck and then.load the empties. Lol

We could use that now! We're in Mitchell and its dry!! The ranch out in Faith is even worse, didn't get much hay probably less than half of whats normal.

    • @caverbrad

1880's town has props but they didn't film anything there. I was there in early June and Randy is correct. The Fort hayes scene was on a private ranch south of Rapid City. After the movie they moved that building west about 13 miles and is free to tour. The Indian summer camp was along the Belle Fourche River close to Alkali School north of Rapid City. The winter camp ending was in Spearfish canyon. I did sort of a DWW film location tour.

Its amazing how they adapted the siding to look like what they couldnt get, real bricks. But they had alot of metal so they stamped the tin or lead metal for brickwork and nailed it to whatever wood they reused from another ghost town that got torn apart after the mines died. Genius ideas. When you feel sad that "Oh what happened to that old town", it often was sold board by board to build the next town. Everything was repurposed and nothing went to waste.

I love what you do Russ and enjoy most all of your stops but I have one complaint, and that is you tend to just walk right on by some of the more interesting parts. I thought when you entered right into the 1800 TOWN and the view was just those few buildings and that CONOCO I thought, well that's pretty cheezy, don't even look 1950's let alone 1800's😂 Then you entered the teepee and things started getting real🤗👍 Can you believe that big beautiful majestic saloon tho😯 That was phenominal🙌💓💃🥃🍻 Russ, to me I would have to say that your video was one of my favorite old western towns captured on video sitting happy in modern times😁 Thank you so much for that fantastic tour🤗💯👍❤

I was there in the 90s, they had Costners horse from the movie there and train tracks with several cars. The saloon was open and I got a saspirilla and the best cream soda there. Nice place and nice to aee how it's changed. And yes we visited the Badlands and camped there overnight, mosquitos were thick and fierce after dark.

Amazing woodwork like craftsman were a dime a dozen, that beautiful interior was just common back then. Every man had one or more trades since they were employed as children doing something. A 17 year old "boy" already had 10 years in a trade. If you read the letters from soldiers written during the Civil War, you can see that the literacy rate was high and it was near Shakespearian English with long compound sentences. No dumbed down education passing people through to not hurt their feelings. Thanks Russ.
