A few weeks back I uploaded the 1998 BBC radio version of The Kraken Wakes, and now here's a very different version from 2016. It's slightly longer, but more significantly it's performed live with a fully orchestral score that gives it a cinematic quality while also doing a great job of enhancing the drama - sometimes, if the music is good, you don't need sound effects for everything, and not every unseen visual needs to be described, because the music will do it for you...
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn

This wonderful drama is just proof of what I always say:" Windham's novels is timeless". They modernised this version and the Orchestral muisc certainly set a tone. I am so glad you shared this with us, it is a very good version of the story. I like the other version you shared too, and refuse to choose a favourite as both are entertaining in equal measures. This one may be more relatable to some because it mentions problems in our timeline such as certain problematic countries as well as the mention of Twitter and technologies of our time.

Yes, I felt that it pushed things into a more modern frame fairly delicately, and to good purpose. The story ends in a way that's quite reminiscent of Capek's The War With The Newts, so if I can find it I might upload a radio version of that too...

@@mysteriousmagpie The War With The Newts should be an interesting listen since I am not familair with the work. Just read up on it, and it is definitely my type of Sci-fi

@@WolfShadowwhisper I've just remembered to try and find my copy of 'Newts', so that ought to come up in a couple of weeks. You might be interested to know that I'm giving thought to uploading another radio series of The Day of the Triffids from the 60s... technically it was a 'remake', a new production of a set of scripts from ten years earlier, and I happen to have the 50s version too... But the 60s serial is particularly interesting for featuring Barbara Shelley, the star of Hammer Horror films like Quatermass and the Pit and Dracula, Prince of Darkness...

One of my favourite books and timeless as Wolf says in the comments. The adaptation is excellent, the music brilliant, and most of the acting is superb. I felt that Tamsin Greig was wooden and ham like and it spoiled it a bit for me. I thought she was brilliant in Black Books.

She is a wonderful actor; I wonder if she was leaning into the narrator/live performance aspect of the production, giving her performance the quality that didn't work for you?

Oooooh Loved Black Books... should dust em off and watch it again. That first episode with the Jehovah Witnesses drew me in. Loved the Jesus jokes, all in good humour of course

@@WolfShadowwhisper She was also a sort of vampire in a 1990s fantasy TV show called Neverwhere, which is always worth discovering if you don't already know it (though the novel, by Neil Gaiman, is more famous).

@@mysteriousmagpie I am more familiar with the novel, but if I can, I will have a look at the series. Neil Gaiman screen adaptations can be dissapointing or a hit. So I hope it will be good.
