Little fun Fact: Portuguese were the first Europeans that met Japanese people, Portugal was responsible for many things, such as the Nanban art and the gastronomic heritage (for example tempura or various sweet dishes such as konpeitō or the castella cakes from Nagasaki), but also the linguistic heritage, which is reflected in several dozen Portuguese loanwords in the Japanese language, We also gave them fire-arms back in the 16th century

It's all about demographics. Portugal doesn't have nearly the demographic problems that many other countries have, and is therefore comparable to other homogenious nations like Norway, Iceland and Finland. It's easier to be "progressive" when all your fellow citizens share your cultural values.

During the earthquake of 1755, something else happened. On that day, 1 November, "Dia de todos os Santos" or "All Saint's Day" was celebrated, and churches and houses were full of candles, which were knocked over by the earthquake and started a fire throughout almost the entire city, being a big cause of the casualties.

Let me also add that since the churchs and houses were aflame, people fleed to open areas, closer to water, thats why the tsunami took so many lives.
Gotta say that other places suffered the same fate, for exemple Algarve, and they didnt have the help that the capital had.

Macau (officially the Province of Macau from 1897 to 1976 and later the Autonomous Region of Macau from 1976 to 1999) was a Portuguese colony from the establishment of the first official Portuguese settlement of Macau in 1557 to its handover to China in 1999. Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde, Goa, Diu, Damão, Macau and Timor-Leste were a Portuguese colony

Portugal and Spain were pioneers in the discovery of the world, and were the very first colonizers, it wasn't just a paper that no one cared about 👍 They were the richest countries in the world at the time, Portugal created the spice trade route that got to india via navigation, Those spices were worth a fortune and every country in europe enjoyed them. The English and the Dutch basically copied them eventually did even better later on. thats how the world evolves, someone creates, the other copies and adds more to the system.

The interesting thing is that while they may have decriminalized illegal drugs (or what would be considered illegal in most other countries) the EU itself does have restrictions on other types of "drugs" or supplements which are legal in most other countries. For example, Melatoninin supplements which people use to assist in sleep, are generally legal in most other countries (at least North America) as they are viewed as supplements, not drugs. But in the EU countries, these are heavily regulated and you can only get them with a prescription it seems. You cannot easily buy them in the store, and if you can, you still need the prescription to get them.

It was in the reign of king D. Luis I that was at last abolished. It was abolished in 1860. The english were making some pressure because we were almost the last in europe to definetely give up that horrible action. We traded slaves for almost 500 years which makes us the country who delvelt in this activity the longest. It is our great shame and it is because of it that our Republic President felt the need to say that we must pay for our past actions. If you have seen the brasilian novel " Gabriela cravo e canela" de Jorge amado you will remember that in the 1930 of last century there were still alive the wounds of slavery.

Actually you're wrong. Portugal abolished slavery in 1761, inland, and it continued on the colonies another 50 years.
Not only was the first country in the world to abolish slavery, also was not the country that practiced slavery longer, far from it.
The arabs did it longer, and still do, the africans, the romans, mongols, and other parts of Asia.
Our president is loosing it, like Biden, and didn't represent the country on that particular. No one should pay reparations, grow up and move on

@@JustinCase-ld4ih - the word "slave" is a residual from times when most of the slaves got captured in Slavic countries. Southern Europe may associate the Germanic peoples of the North with blonde hair and blue eyes, but the original Germanic peoples looked more like Persians.
In old Rome, the Roman empire, prostitution was forbidden but tolerated.
Often women with blonde hair got prostituted and at some point in time, the free Roman women tried to die their hair blonde in attempts to get fertilized by their husbands.
"History" is the art of leaving out and make belief.
The Islamic world has a collective hate against the neck-tie - in Roman times, the neck-tie identified the person as slave and the color(s) tied them to the person who owned them. Contrary to the past 500 years in Europe, the Romans had a semi-open slavery system where people could enter more or less voluntarily when in too much debt. They could also work themselves out of it again. But that would require a civilized owner.
The slave-kidnappers and slave traders in the meantime, kept attractive (strong, beautiful, sexy, etc.) ones for their own (ab)use, frequently. As "vik" is an old Germanic word that means "quarter" or small hamlet/village, and "ing" means "person of/from" we can today translate "Vikings" as "boys from the hood". Yes, that is pejorative. Scandinavians think that "vik" references a "bay" (area) but that is from their particular history with the word.
In their lifestyle, the blonde men would come along in the battles to capture the next wave of slaves and sell them along European and Mediterranean coasts. And over time, the blond(e) ones interbred more and more.
The slave trade from Africa got the slaves supplied by African tribes in harbors along the African coast. Some of those African suppliers having gotten more wealthy travelled to e.g. today's USA and lived there as "free" people. However racial segregation over time made their "free" lives increasingly difficult.
The explanation why Europeans would not go into the jungle to capture slaves was simply that no white people would survive malaria long enough.
If you are familiar with the texts in the Christian book called "The Book" (bible), in its "New Testament" (originally in koinè Greek) and with a few of the theological debates, then you may be aware of the debate if the women in Jesus' entourage could have been prostitutes. What could possibly be the origin of this debate? It's not in the manuscripts.
Visiting archaeological sites in Rome, with a guide that was a retired university teacher of Latin and Roman history, in an ancient grave site, he told that in old Rome prostitution was forbidden and the prostitutes could not advertise their business, except in the graveyards. They had little panels with their name, their specialization, and rate - imagine .
My response to him was, wow, all of a sudden the sentence in the new testament "what do you search the living amongst the dead" gets a whole different meaning to me!
The art of leaving out would be called "Jesuit" in my - once dominated by protestant Christians - country and that is a euphemism for "lie".
      Historical versus hysterical.

Portugal was actually first in pioneering the Age of Discovery & if not for this small but GREAT Nation having a million or so population at the time Portugal would have control of 60+ % of the planet today ( discovered by Portugal > North American continent with knowledge from the Great Vikings allies of the Templars who were 1st there, South American Continent, Half of Africa, big chunk of India, chunks of China, Japan & surrounding area including Philippines , Australia & New Zealand , Madagascar & to many other islands to count all over the globe, Its really quite remarkable what could or better yet, should have been ) ... Population was Portugal's down fall but Portugal still was the first Global Empire, longest lasting Global Empire of over 600 years & first true Global Super power , not to shabby for this small Nations history , Thanks in big part to the knowledge, courage & bravery of its Kings & heroes of its past & the Templars - Order of Christ Templars of course.. lots for the Portuguese people - culture to be proud of no doubt about it , It must be said this very underrated country - culture has been disrespected for to long now, Its beyond me why it is so & quite pathetic that Hollywood continues to ignore it on the big & little screens... Yes quite PATHETIC .. great video.. Thanks , Obrigado :)

Do you even question why the high emigration rate? Because this wonderful country became so poor (specifically after 74) and now is one of the poorest country in Europe. As estatísticas... 🙈🙉🙊

The main economic performance of a country can be seen from its gross domestic product. In other words, the total quantity of all goods and services sold within Portugal minus intermediate consumption. Worldwide gross domestic product in 2023 was at about 13,133 USD per capita. GDP in Portugal, on the other hand, reached USD 27,275 per capita, or 287.08 billion USD for the whole country. Portugal is therefore currently ranked 50 of the major economies. If this is calculated per inhabitant, taking purchasing power parity into account, then Portugal is in the list of the world's richest countries in place 41.
