@@claytontalesfore7564 Don't really know about the gun except from the trailers (don't play insiders) so just by the looks of it, it could work technically
I just don’t understand why they don’t add more piratey weapons? Boarding axe for example. Slow but can do a good chunk of damage, and if you hit the same spot from inside the ship enough times, a tier 1 hole can appear, but no larger than that. Gives another way to sink players if you’re stuck tdming with no ship around, and even a way to put out lower deck fires. A harpoon as a throwable. The longer the charge, the further and more damage it does. Become Captain Ahab and hunt the Shrouded on a rowie lmao
could even make it so that if youre attacking a ship it like "breaks" and would only be "fixed" when hitting the resupply chest after popping so many holes into a ship
i honestly wish they weren't promoting the boarding even more. we really already see fights turning to ramming, knocking masts, boarding, dropping anchor and then spawn camping after you put like 2 holes in them. no need to have a boarding axe. we need more incentive to have SHIP battles. this grapple hook is going to make it even worse and a boarding axe would just add on to people trying to board. tired of the game just being filed with Fortnite cod kids who can't even attempt to sink a ship without boarding. i get it if the crew is good at staying afloat and they need to be killed to sink. seriously makes the game not even fun because you're not even battling its just a race to see who can spawn camp.
Because the harpoon gun has been in development for a while. I’ve also encountered a cheater last week and Rare needs to act faster. But this is a long fight that will not end. Performance will not improve with new content, it’s been this way since Season 3. SoT feels stable at seasons end, until new bugs & glitches emerge.
@gabrybrandy6623 I have to fullt agree with u! Like every uppdate They do They f up the game even more. Like I only did hg and started the game in season 6 and got like 4k levels but the game is just so unstable so it’s not fun to even play so I quit Like cheaters can also literally ban people
Completely agree! Combat should be about ships and cannonballs, boarding should only be possible with the harpoon rope or to jump in from another boat. To launch pirates with cannons is already nonsensical..
@@Mr.LegoGrievous they should add extra depth and strategy with the ship battles, not the boarding. Maybe factions in each direction with Ai ships you can hire.. Or… Your own bases to customize and spend coins on. Ice biomes… Pirate games at pubs, boots & fists, cigar smoking, prostitutes… Pirate stuff 🏴☠️
Blunderbuss deserved it's nerf a LONG time ago, 90-100 damage is too much for any weapon to do in 1 shot. Blunderbuss was always meant as a defensive weapon that enabled a smaller crew to stop a bigger crew (due to the ridiculously OP ability to 1 shot) this change was long over due and IS the reason quick swap was removed. Frankly it should do 75-80 damage tops, even 90 guarantees that double gunners will NEVER switch off blunder because it continues to deliver the most damage of any gun and thus the fastest TTK.
As a solo slooper ill throw in my 2 cents i think the harpoon gun is a awful idea it'll make TDMers in HG even more annoying and a nightmare combatting bigger ships
@@sSteppingStones tAkEs No SkIlL, yeah bro its so much fun getting boarded for one hour and not getting any chance to actually do naval cuz ya'll mf leave ship on full sails, and then when you get lucky on your 32th try at boarding and DO kill your enemy you just spawn camp them. DeMarco DID NOT die for this shit bro 💀💀💀
meh. as a faction of the opposite side, that doesn't care about pvp, just hitting the 100 ally for AHG and RHG is all anybody, that doesn't want pvp, needs. I'm by no means a good player, so if I see a good opponent, I just sink instantly and get into another round with a worse opponent. It took a few weeks to hit 100 (I play a lot) and now I can just relax and don't care about it every again. "but what about World PvP" I hear. meh again. The only time the past months i've run into good pvpers in open world, is when I go for 10+ BB stacks. I've not seen a single good player outside that.
@@sSteppingStones Yeah let me scuttle a hourglass fight bro fr. If Naval is boring then why in the fuck are you playing a pirate game about SHIP combat bro
If it functions as you describe this will kill the game for many people. The game has a hard-core of TDM players who can spawn camp you on your ship and be difficult to remove. With this, Rare has given them an easy way to board and reboard.
It doesn't take that long to finish AHG and RHG. Just stop doing it after that. good players are rarely show themselves in open world, so I can't see the problem as a non-PvP'er
It's been this bad before, sort of. Once upon a time all ships had a respawn time of like 45 seconds, then it was changed so that all ships have a 15 second respawn. Killed the game for a season because the only way to sink someone was to spawnkill them or wait until they ran out of wood. Then again that was prior to hourglass so there weren't any cheaters to really piss people off.
Tarkov has been consistently messing up and getting worse over many years, longer than SoT, and its community only did something after a hacking kerfuffle and the $250 scandal. Uniting most players against SoT would take something huge, not the gradual decline it has gone through even though it well deserves it.
This evens the field between player ranks, fighting an hour long naval battle? Not anymore. Don't complain, think up strategies against it... Harpoon gun = skeet shooting. With videos of people sniping people from 1000 yards up or shooting out of a cannon and doing a sniper /pistol combo B4 hitting the water... The meta needs to be changed, the grappling gun is going to help you avoid getting bear trapped on the ladder but makes you vulnerable to murder because now you have to switch weapons or items B4 you can engage. Start thinking tactically instead of going "mmm new tool make my job harder, me complain".
I think it would make it less awfull, but it would still be seen as a turn for the worse. If the way to make the harpoon OK is to make it way weaker then maybe it shouldnt be in the game
I hate to give this comparison but I think it's the best way to balance it for Sea of Thieves specifically, make the Harpoon Guns like Fortnite. When you grapple something you still have to pull yourself in, if you harpoon onto a ship you skid across the water as it's moving whilst you're trying to pull in, this'll give a chance for defending crews to actually stop a board whilst also still being good enough to be a viable option if you get a sneaky board without people noticing.
It's an interesting concept, but it feels like they haven't thought this through. The blunder changes are the best example of that, trying to nerf it but instead just feeling like it mandates having a grapple gun to deal with the knockback Praaaying they change this somehow before the season launches
I just want more area's to explore tbh, I'm the only member on my crew that can remotely fight so I'm always happy for the others to get tools which will help them but I can only play in the same sandbox for so long. Some new islands wouldn't go amiss
@@calciumman8250 do people ever board you with tridents? horns? sword of souls? no because that's just a free present for you, it would mean it would just be a onetime use item that you then give to the enemy
@@knyt0 Terrible comparison. Those items restrict your moment a ton, the grapple could be like the Burning Blade Cutlass. It’s just a skill issue if your enemy takes it, big whoop. It’s risk v. reward.
The grapple gun will be very fun on my duo nights as it changes the meta to such a degree that it'll be a very fresh experience. HOWEVER... I won't enjoy getting boarded by 4 people at once when I'm solo. That'll NOT be fun, since the new blunder can throw me off my ship easily. This game will basically be Super Smash Brothers as people will be knocked off ships with the blunder, grapple back up and repeat. I think Falcore's idea of the grapple only being able to grab a ship's ladder is the solution.
I think falcore’s along with the idea in this video, would be good, you can hit the ladder from the water, or the mast from the air, but not anywhere else
The irony of gutting blunder is they actually made it stronger to combo with the harpoon gun. Before, all you would have to do is play distance to easily counter it - they have one gun. Now, they board and can't be one shot by defenders, and they can yeet people off of their own boat.
As a solo slooper, I'm looking forward to using it on islands and dreading how it will remove the skill ceiling for boarding by making it as easy as launching in my general direction. I like the idea of it being limited or unusable in naval combat but I feel it's going to make the problem of large crews ganking sloops worse.
I think it should be a slow reel, like a fishing pole, to pull objects. Either it will let you drag items that are far away in, allowing possibly the chance to be stolen or attacked, or you will be able to SLOWLY bring yourself in to a ship, giving people time to try and prepare, but also allowing a player to still catch themselves on a ship. Or at the very least, maybe make it a weapon that is based on bleed damage, which isn’t really a thing yet Also, give me my boarding axe please rare Or a throwable based gun/mortar weapon you can move
Why not reduce the grapple's recovery speed? For example. If you you do harpoon a ship you then slowly have to wind the roupe's drum until you're close. This way you can't just teleport anywhere. It'd give enemy crews plenty of time to notice and try to intercept you and you wouldn't be able to just fly over and teleport onto a deck. Instead having to swing like tarzan to your desired position. Loot wouldn't be immediately stolen. And it could even be more to slow down a player rather than just doing a get over here.
This gun will kill sot. Rare has an insane amount of issues that they need to address before they consider adding something game breaking like this to the bs
@WealthandReligion not really. The HP gun will only have 5 shots unless reloaded, just like the eye of reach. So the regular harpoon will still be useful in many ways.
This is typical Rare. Come up with an interesting idea, throw it into the game half-baked. All the players find ways to grief other players with it, then Rare spends the next two years trying to “balance” it, while they continue to lose players. Meanwhile, they are wasting time on this when they could be actually IMPROVING the game. This is why I don’t play anymore. And the more and more the game gets closer to being Fortnite, the more sure I am that I’ll never bother coming back. 🤷🏻♂️
I definitely do not. Sure the cheaters are a big problem but I feel that season 11 and 12 were some of the best seasons in the game. I've played this game since day 1 and it has improve a LOT. From harpoon to captaincy to sovereigns to emissaries. PL went from a goal to a chore seeing how much the game has changed
@@exoduspeanut6843 didn;t play a lot of season 12 but i know they changed the blunderbuss and i dont like that season 11 i can kinda agree bc of playstation season 10 was kinda bad tho i play this game since arena and i agree and disagree
yeah this weapon sounds like it would be an absolute disaster to the sandbox, I think one way they could balance the harpoon gun is by making the reload of it really long, like longer than any weapon in the game. imagine if you had a crank on the side of it that you had to use to charge back the "bolt" of the harpoon each time you shot it to ensure it's maximum reach. (a bit like those huge medieval crossbows) this way it can prevent spamming of the weapon and allow players a better chance to react. I think it should have limited ammo as well, maybe 3 to 5 shots. I also think they should reduce the speed of which your character zips to a ship, and add another mechanic to where enemy players can cut the rope before you reach their ship either via sword or gun. So this prevents an easy win for noob players. I hate what they've done to the blunderbuss, I think it should be a 1 shot kill up close.
Nope. No harpoon gun. It's a cool idea and it will absolutely make pvp a miserable experience. I'm begging Rare in this instance to swallow their pride and not pull the trigger on this addition to the game.
I don't exactly understand why give a gun to the annoying ass boarders who exploit the fishing rod glitch and you can't even counter them because they have an indestructible interact key which they spam non-stop now this problem will be worsend becouse even if they miss the ladder they can just get on, this is especially negative to hg, where once you reach a certain skill level (in the eyes of skill-based matchmaking) you can't get a normal fight it's always arena veterans who are tired of ship to ship combat and would rather tdm, the harpoon gun will make this worse, I say let the harpoon gun not work on ships or just ban them from hg
im pretty bad at the game cant wait for HG and regular free roam to become even harder when i get shit on by literal pirate spiderman who has 10,000 hours in the game some dude who has enough levels in the servants of the flame to have pirate curse 30x over, and he soars over my ship with an inventory full of pineapples, flies down like an avenger, drops my anchor, and sinks me in 2 minutes flat
I’m sorry to say this I play this game for 5 years and i have over 2k hours on this game But what Rare are doing those last few months is insane and there are much better ways to do stuff + i know what’s comming next which i cant tell you nothing about Tho i feels sad to me that i dont have that same enthusiasm to play this game and feel like quitting
I think another way to balance the Harpoon Gun for PvP, is to make the Harpoon Gun deal Fall Damage equal to that which the player would’ve taken if they had simply fallen from the maximum height of the arc that they fired out of a cannon from. Logically, it would make sense that using a harpoon tool that would yank you downward, would still force someone to land and feel the impact of being accelerated downward. I also saw someone else suggest in on someone else’s video I think, but Rare could also Balance the Harpoon to either not work (at least, on other ships) while the player is in freefall, therefore requiring a player to be standing on some sort of collision before they can harpoon themselves onto another ship. Or alternatively, they also suggested that the Harpoon Gun wouldn’t negate overshooting while in the air, but would instead require players to “reel themselves in” like how the Ship Harpoons require you to reel them in, in order to move your ship towards whatever terrain the harpoon connected with. So by overshooting a board attempt, you’d keep going and land in the water, then need to hold the Fire or ADS button to reel yourself in and pull your player closer to the ship, where you could hopefully grab a ladder as the ship sails, kinda similar to trying to board a ship with a harpoon rowboat. Logically, the players on the boat that got “tagged” by someone’s harpoon should have a way to defend themselves, such as taking a sword or knife, and being able to attack the rope of the harpoon to cut it instantly, or being able to briefly interact with the harpoon/rope, in order to “Dislodge” or “Remove” it. You could even make it a little Risk vs Reward, where if you overshot your Harpoon Tag by a *long* shot, the rope could become frayed, like how they are in some Tall Tales, and could simply be shot with any of the firearms, in order to snap the rope instantly and not even require players on the Boardee ship to have to stop what their doing and either cut the rope or hold to interact with, in order to remove the boarder’s harpoon/rope. Any number of these changes would help make the Harpoon Gun feel less cheesy and more skilled based, yet also balanced for all players and all/most crew sizes, in the PvP scene of the game.
My suggested harpoon change is that there should be 1 per ship, mounted somewhere you can use, and after dying with it, there's a small cooldown before it respawns on the rack again. Makes it more balanced for ship sizes without dramatic changes to other things.
i would make it a pick up like the trident (so no weapon slot but cant fight with it in hand) and it dissapers when you grapple-launch somewhere. have a refilling shelf of them next to the ammo box and a number of harpoons equal to the crew size with maybe 30sec/1minute respawn timer. grappling loot wouldnt break it so it still makes selling or over-land transport of chests less tedious. also i think the harpoon gun is a cool concept but you shouldnt be able to carry it with you while launching from a cannon, just use it on land or from your ship not mid-flight (after writing i dont think i added much new to your idea but i really liked it and wanted to add some comment:)
Best way to make Harpoon gun enjoyable: Dont make it an instant teleport like shown above, make it so if you shoot something, you almost have to reel yourself in like a fishing line. You could visually change it so that it looks more like an actualy harpoon gun with a winch of sorts instead of a sniper with a harpoon on the end. You still get that assisted aim when boarding, but it acts more like a safety line and still leave you vulnerable when pulling yourself in. One way I image this working is if you got overshot by a crewmate and grappled the deck, you land out in the water yet you can still pull yourself close enough to get on the ship. But if a enemy spotted you, you are pretty much a sitting duck unless you let go of the harpoon. Even further, if you harpoon the rear of a ship, you could stealthily hold on behind it like an advanced tuck/lamprey. Would make for fun and interesting mechanics besides point and teleport Also, no sniping loot from players hands, save that for the mounted harpoon on the ship. It would ruin the game.
I've been a little out of the loop with SoT, but if they're committed to adding this they need to make it reel in a fair bit slower, add a noticeable sound & animation if it hits a ship, and force an animation lock through the whole thing so people can't just use it for momentum and switch weapons during a board attempt. It's going to be heavily tuned in favour of the person using it in any state, so adding some ways for people to react to where the user is going to land will make it feel more consistent - and actually works quite nicely with the blundy knockback if you can just hoof them straight off as they land (even though it's still a bad change imo).
@@oshawott5308 never even thought about that. The shrine of ocean's fortune will also take all of 30 seconds considering it's all about climbing to the top. Maybe they'll make some surfaces impossible to harpoon.
I would like to see artifacts - you can equip one to your ship at a time but hard to get depending on the rarity, EXAMPLE - you can see sloops on map , you can see Brigants on map , Galleons , you can run with chests , you can roll up one ladder on your ship - harpoon gun wont work on your ship - you get 1 skeleton crew member, stuff like this but you have to equip at begging before loading in. Also depending on the server also have the flying ductchman as a powerful ship like the Burning blade - can have coral crew members can dive for a ltd time ect. #rare #seaoftheives @rare @seaoftheives
Biggest thing im not gonna like its that its gonna become another sword lunge situation, The sword lunge gives you great mobility and makes things like boarding or getting on a island much easier, if you dont have a sword you have significantly less mobility…because the harpoon gun takes up a weapon slot if you DONT have it equipped you are always going to be at a disadvantage or feel very sluggish…
Sword lunge should be discarded, cannon pirate launch as well. Maybe those ladders should be retractable as well. The boarding + spawn kill bullshit needs to go.
@@knyt0I ment in the mobility department, yeah you dont have range and have to get up close but with a sword you can use it to be more mobile, without it your stuck to walking, cannon launching or a harpoon.
I'm a solo slooper, I work all day and don't get a lot of time to play, so I have to be solo unless I want a chaotic crew that does little of anything. The Harpoon gun is going to likely kill the game for Solo Sloopers. I'm pretty good at combat too, mostly because I can (for the most part) out pilot the other ships, and I'm decent enough with a canon to keep up the pressure. Without that distance, which a harpoon gun will immediately make irrelevant, I will have to fight 3v1 and while I can hold my own, it's only a matter of time. A sloop is easier to sink than a Galleon. They can stay out of range, board me and have the captain spiral while using canons. This means I will likely lose, with little hope but to use Blunderbuss and Sniper, my two least favourite weapons. Either that or have a terrible crew of randoms that all want to do different things. We'll see what happens though, hopefully the solo experience isn't killed by this update.
I have to admit, I'm mainly a solo and occasionally duo sloop. I'm not the kind of person that doesn't want the game to change, hell it's been changing constantly since I started. Lots of the changes have been mostly positive, especially some of the QoL updates, but the big changes to PvP have me less interested in dealing with High Seas and kind of turning me off from the game. Been playing since ~2018 and it's honestly one of my favorite games. I'm old enough to have seen lots of live service games try to "do something big to really shake things up" that lost half the players overnight. Really hoping that doesn't happen here and that my concerns are unfounded, but I've just seen this happen too many times with the live service model.
@@jadedrac0 the fact you think it could be made into Fortnite shows A) you dont know FN very well, as thats not how harpoons work in FN and B) you also havnt been paying attention to in game SoT as we've had harpoons since April 2019, rowboat HPs since 2021, loot detached automatically from main ship HP since 2023, and recently added walking across HP rope with S12 update this year...
@@haeclark I’m a competitive hourglasser with both Ghost and skelly curse. I probably have a better understanding on the game than you. I simply don’t want them to kill naval and turn this into just another ordinary pvp fps. You clearly don’t understand how powerful the harpoon gun is if your comparing it to the ship harpoon where you haft to tight walk across to get on.
@@jadedrac0 first off, getting the curse doesn't mean you know a lot about the sea considering the many ways you can get it, and the fact HG is only 1 aspect of the game...including that people can just be carried to get the curses. Bringing in a HP gun wont kill off naval anything, esp when the only navel thing about SoT is the ships and ocean. The rest is simply stories or pirates, which are robbers on the water who rob both land and sea things. "Naval means belonging to, relating to, or involving a country's navy." FYI SoT is already an ordinary pvp fps atm, esp with BB mains, just with the extra element of controlling a ship at times, but not always (if youre on land pvping or TDMing). You clearly dont understand how FN harpoon functions if your comparing it to SoT HP which hasnt even came out yet. And yes, there are a lot of shared similarities of HP gun and the existing ones, with real difference that it'll be a QOL incentive for those esp who solo for looting treasure and moving around the island. As far as boarding ships go: there's already tons of ways to board, including those who like to exploit. Using the HP to correct a cannon board will still take the player to be able to hit the ship with the HP which I wont imagine will be as easy as people like you are leading it onto being. Honestly, it'll be the pvp sweats who us the HP in the way of boarding most of the time. Yet again theyd board anyway, and theres ways to deal with them. In the end youre worried about a function not even in game yet to even know how it'll actually effect the game
@ThMindFdr my friend works in game development. She thinks that it would be a massive ball ache to make SOT in unreal 5. She said it's a pain in the ass to work with.
So. Giant skill gaps...like it aleeady is? Ok so nothing will change then. i already barely can do anything in the game so this will change nothing to me
My opinion on your idea, the swinging should definitely be added for islands, with reduced fall damage, and hitting a ship won't do anything, but hitting the MAST will cause the zipping effect we've seen in the promotional material, then you drop down with no fall damage.
I think what would balance the harpoon gun out is with fall damage if you grapple to high and you fall you take damage also I think it should have a delay on it too so you can’t pull you blunderbuss out straight away or the other thing they could do is it has a cool down so you can only use a certain amount every minute and it should only have a certain distance
My take on it is the fact that, if, months before you plan to release an item, it is too overpowered you change the item, and don’t need to change other things that were somewhat essential (especially to solo crews) but also now the blunderbuss was gonna be annoying anyway cause once you are boarded you would just get sent, so I’m glad rare is listening
The best way to balance this, is to reduce the cartoonishly quick drop and slow speed on the cannonballs. It's very unrealistic and down right goofy seeing how slow these cannonballs are flying. The grapple gun is going to make boarding very easy at closer ranges. If the cannonballs are given faster speed and less drop, it will push the naval battles out to longer distances where grapples become less viable. This would add a lot of strategy with how people choose to take their ship to ship fights. One problem I could see with this approach however, is that it would inadvertently buff galleon's since they currently thrive on the longer range combat, with their slower turn speed and increased cannon amount. The grapple update is already going to make galley crews much harder to fend off when they can send multiple people to board quite easily.
It honestly looks close to impossible to board Brigs and sloops with the poongun while in the water. The Gally has that back balcony that makes it look easy though. Like where are you supposed to grapple to get on board if your in the water? It's not going to be that easy to board besides shooting yourself out a cannon and grappling the deck
EDIT: I WAS RIGHT HAHAHAHA SUCK IT!!! Just make it so you CANT GRAPPLE from the WATER or after SHOOTING FROM A CANON. This really isn’t hard. Idk why Rare is so confused on how to balance this.
I think that they should tweak the harpoon to where it can be cut with a sword or shot at to send it back. I think that at least giving people a chance to stop the board that way would help somewhat balance it
Rip the sloop. The major advantage of the sloop (since they messed with sailing speeds) was that it was the easiest ship to defend boarders as a solo. Not anymore.
As a returning majority solo player who isn't the greatest, this may kill the game for me honestly if it's implemented as is. Being blundered off my own boat repeatedly is already bad enough, but now these kids who lose streaked the skele curse can just harpoon onto my boat after they horribly fail to shoot over, blunder me off, and then talk shit into the mic? Like come on. Harpooning and walking over with the ship harpoons was as far as this mechanic needed to go. I'm also not great at bording and frequently missjudge the distance, elevations etc. So I already know this is going to just ruin the game if it means that I can just whip out a harpoon to cover my own lack of skill. Because if I can do it so can everyone else and it's not only going to reduce the skill cap massively but just be overall infuriating to play against. Bording was perfect. You either get gud and aim the cannon correctly, or you fight to get up that ladder. It keeps the enemy crew occupied, they have a chance to keep you off and kill you. This is just going to be "oops missed, lul jk harpoon".
I'm not sure I follow you on this one. First you say it'll kill the game for you, then you say it reduces the skill cap. Wouldn't that second statement, for you, as a "not the greatest" player, mean you'll have an easier time? Unless you're doing RHG or AHG, I don't see how this'll impact the game at all. I never see good PvP'ers in open world and "shit" on almost anybody that pulls up, and i'm really not good at PvP xD.
@@pixelsot Wether it makes the game more fun or not isn't that easy to say. It's a spectrum. Some players will find it more fun, others wont. Current players that'll lose the interest in the game might leave, while other people might see this and want to play the game.
As a pirate who solo sloops a lot I disagree with almost everything you've stated I'm looking forward even more to HPG coming out next month now because of your vod.
Even tho i understand what you are saying i have to disagree if the harpoon gun replace one of you’re two guns then you basically trade TTK for movement and it is balanced imo since you can’t one shot anymore
@@AShinyRay yeah thats true but if you board a team and they have a Classic blunder snipe combo and they know what they’re doing, is the person boarding with the harpoon gun at a disadvantage for only having a Sword ?
@@NassimBajou I thought that as well, but you have to remember it'll basically guarantee you can anchor whoever you're fighting, which will be extremely OP
If they add landing lag/stun after using the harpoon gun, I think it would be very well balanced. Giving a window for defenders to react would likely make for a very strategic boarding tool that rewards game sense over repeatedly shooting yourself in the general direction of the ship for a free board.
I don't think we are ready for the grapple. As for the double barrel pistol, it wasn't that good in pve either, that's why it isn't popular. It worked on basic skellies and phantoms but on the obsidian skellies for example it's absolutely dogshit because you need to hit two shots while it's still one for the throwing knives. They are just 3x more powerful so why would you bother with the pistol?
The harpoon should launch players with a base velocity, which would then factor in the speed of the object they’re connecting to, such as a moving ship. This would allow the harpoon to work normally in scenarios like land-to-land, land-to-boat, boat-to-land, or boat-to-boat. However, when harpooning from the water, the mechanics should change. The water’s drag needs to be considered, significantly slowing the player’s launch velocity. If this "base velocity" is reduced due to factors like water drag, instead of an instant launch, players should be prompted to reel themselves in slowly toward the object, similar to how a fishing rod works. This reel-in mechanic would be triggered when drag or external forces cause the base velocity to drop below a certain threshold. This ensures that while the harpoon works as intended in most situations, it remains balanced and realistic when used in water, preventing it from being overpowered.
just make it have a small range and also not abel to attach to ships or at least the ladder so you can teleport to the ladder andboard normally, that way it'd be better
It seems like the harpoon gun is the justification for the blunder nerf. Keep getting knocked off the ladder by a helm with a blundy? Just harpoon up! Now it defeats the purpose of the blundy nerf all together. If it was more of an Apex/ halo style like you said, i would probably love it. This shoot and teleport is just too OP. Will it negate fall damage if you shoot straight down? Looks like it did in that boarding clip. My personal solution- its not a harpoon gun. Its a grapple gun. No stealing loot, no teleporting players straight to you. Thats what the mounted harpoon is for. It sticks to all hard surfaces and allows you to swing from it. It has a reel mechanic like the boat mounted harpoon, which pulls you closer to the impact point at a set speed. Over shoot on a board and just missed that sweet deck shot? Grapple gun the boat and reel yourself in over a few seconds to reach the ladder. It gives the crew a chance to shoot at you, but the missed boarder a chance still board, without being too op. Or some tuckers could just ski behind a ship for a while lol. On an island and dont want to run around looking for a way up? Grapple the ledge above you and reel yourself up. Maybe even an option to shoot a surface and then attach the other end at your feet and make a zipline/ tightrope like the mounted harpoon can. Though thats alot to ask lol. Just some thoughts
My thought is make it have like 1 ammo so it can't really be spammed. Additional reason other than just nerfing it, if we're being realistic who can carry a bunch of harpoons in they're back pocket anyway 😂
As a new player and solo slooper I allready have such a hard time dealing with boarders I dont mind the ship combat in this game but the hand to hand combat is just awful in this game if they board at all its just better to scuttle and try a new server cause they either gonna spawn camp me or throw me off my own boat with the blunderbus. Ad the harpoon to this mess and the problem gets worse.
Easy to fix this, just add the failed sword swing cool down so you are defenceless after boarding for a couple seconds. So you can easily snipe the flying pirates after they land + they will have the harpoongun equipped after which adds even longer until they can attack/defend
Not sure if anyone has said this, but I think the best way to balance it by distance, it can shoot super far but if it notices it hits a boat or land or whatever you’re trying to harpoon on, after a certain distance it won’t allow you to go towards wherever. But if it notices it grabs loot, just keep its same range. Still gonna make game easy whether or not but makes it way more balanced 🤷♂️ (Don’t know how hard that is to code I know nothing of game coding)
I actually love your proposed poon gun changes, it’d make it not just fair but reward creativity, and make traveling the bigger islands FAR less tedious.
I agree. I don’t think that the majority of players are ready for the grapple gun in PVP and with all the other issues we’re currently having, I am honestly starting to dread the update. Yes, it will be an awesome tool for traversing islands and stuff but as you’ve already pointed out, PVP is going to be more of a mess than it currently is. Definitely agree that they should take their time with this. We’ve already had a lot of cool upgrades recently but we need some rebalancing and stability before throwing more into an already chaotically glitching sandbox.
I think the easiest thing to do to balance it is to LOCK. OPPOSING. SHIPS. ARMORIES. There's no reason a player should be able to grapple onto the ship and (especially on PC) quickly swap their grapple to a more pvp centered gun. If you want to use the grapple gun, it should be trading off firepower for movement
I think the harpoon gun won’t be that bad if there’s a short range for it. So if you aren’t even anywhere near the boat you cannot harpoon it. A sound would also be nice so players know when someone is harpooning onto their boat. Delaying the time for the player to actually be reeled in to the boat would also be good to give the crew time to react
As long as the harpoon gun takes a slot in weapon inventory I think it won’t be that bad. Though a cool down for being able to use things right after (like hitting the anchor) should be a thing
As a casual player I stuggle boarding ships. I think this is an item aimed at less pro players in oder to not feel the fustration of not being able to enjoy the feel of boarding. More seasonsed players will always complain about things changing the make and make an experience more enjoyable for newer player (something that has been an issue for a lot of newbies for atleast the last 4 years.)
I've been saying for a while and still feel that past a certain speed it shouldn't grab anything. This feels like it would require more planning and skill
Sword can actually do damage and be useful. I would not call using sword as “sacrificing a weapon slot” since its also the main counter against throwing knives and double gunners, especially now since the blunder nerf
i'll call it right now: It'll see soooo many Summit1g clips of him stealing loot xD. After the blunder nerf I still see double gunners. Just pistol/reach combo instead, which has been my preferred method for a long time. I wouldn't say Sword counters double gunners at all though. just make sure you can get yourself in a spot where they can't run around you. But that's just my oppinion :P. I don't even think i'll use the grapple unless I wanna fool around and grab loot from people selling xD
@@JokerP5 People that get pissed off is just stupid :P some complain double gunning is OP, but why is it so OP if the sword is OP too? if everything is OP, nothing is xD. it's just salty players... a construct of modern society, hehe.
I think the easiest way to balance it in the short term is to make it so you can’t use other guns if you have the harpoon gun equipped, cutlass or throwing knives only
I don't feel like it will be much of a problem. You miss out on a whole primary weapon. As long as you don't let the boarder get to your armory he will have a huge disadvantage if you realize him.
Seems like if they balanced the speed of the harpoons it could be fine. From the gameplay I'm watching here, the harpoons are a much too effective way to board. Make it have a slower projectile, and then reel in the player more slowly. Could also make it crank loudly so it cant be used for stealth boarding.
Revert the blunder, and remove the harpoon gun. It’s sounds like a mega-cope (because it is) but I just don’t think having a weapon to easily wipe out any ship if your good enough seems unfair in a sense, everything else is amazing though love the hiding mechanic
1:20 I said the same thing about the blunder change. I think it would of been fine a week or two out from the update if they want to release it early, but it's definitely a mechanic meant for the harpoon gun change and we've not even gotten a Season 14 update.
I mean, you can't change weapons on other ships anymore so having the harpoon gun puts you into a disadvantage in combat. I think with that change it's totally balanced. Sure a good sword player could be super annoying with this but IMO this could be super fun! I'm looking forward to it :) maybe I'm just too positive about it because more options always mean more fun to me. Let's see how this turns out!

Thank you, Ive been saying boarding axes since this game came out
could even make it so that if youre attacking a ship it like "breaks" and would only be "fixed" when hitting the resupply chest after popping so many holes into a ship
YES! F***ING YES! Boarding axes!!! 🙏🤩
i honestly wish they weren't promoting the boarding even more. we really already see fights turning to ramming, knocking masts, boarding, dropping anchor and then spawn camping after you put like 2 holes in them. no need to have a boarding axe. we need more incentive to have SHIP battles. this grapple hook is going to make it even worse and a boarding axe would just add on to people trying to board. tired of the game just being filed with Fortnite cod kids who can't even attempt to sink a ship without boarding. i get it if the crew is good at staying afloat and they need to be killed to sink. seriously makes the game not even fun because you're not even battling its just a race to see who can spawn camp.
you should put that in feedback for them and get others to do it with you thats how we can get that stuff cuz that sounds cool
Just why is the arpoon gun a priority when we have: no gold cosmetics, the hacker problem, and awful game performances?
Because the harpoon gun has been in development for a while.
I’ve also encountered a cheater last week and Rare needs to act faster. But this is a long fight that will not end. Performance will not improve with new content, it’s been this way since Season 3. SoT feels stable at seasons end, until new bugs & glitches emerge.

As a solo slooper ill throw in my 2 cents i think the harpoon gun is a awful idea it'll make TDMers in HG even more annoying and a nightmare combatting bigger ships
good, tdm in HG is fun and people being able to stop it with blunder bombs is really annoying and also takes no skill

@@SweetJP. They'll kill you till you scuttle.
navel combat isnt even apart of the game now. There's no navy in SoT
Spawn camp sucks assss
It's a very slow projectile with a very short range
Nah there will still be ways to counter them and in fact it'll help you to reboard your own ship
Considering how bad some things are on Twitter right now, I think this update just might send the community into a war against rare.
It's been this bad before, sort of.
Once upon a time all ships had a respawn time of like 45 seconds, then it was changed so that all ships have a 15 second respawn.
Killed the game for a season because the only way to sink someone was to spawnkill them or wait until they ran out of wood.
Then again that was prior to hourglass so there weren't any cheaters to really piss people off.
good thing sot twitter is a tiny fraction of the total player base
Tarkov has been consistently messing up and getting worse over many years, longer than SoT, and its community only did something after a hacking kerfuffle and the $250 scandal. Uniting most players against SoT would take something huge, not the gradual decline it has gone through even though it well deserves it.
Good thing no one takes Twitter seriously.
I think what you said about having to hit the mast to board would balance the harpoon a fair amount
What about ladders only?
So instead of fortinite we could say that the harpoon gun works like harpoons on ships in the game right now
It's an interesting concept, but it feels like they haven't thought this through. The blunder changes are the best example of that, trying to nerf it but instead just feeling like it mandates having a grapple gun to deal with the knockback
Praaaying they change this somehow before the season launches

I won't enjoy getting boarded by 4 people at once when I'm solo. That'll NOT be fun, since the new blunder can throw me off my ship easily.
This game will basically be Super Smash Brothers as people will be knocked off ships with the blunder, grapple back up and repeat.
I think Falcore's idea of the grapple only being able to grab a ship's ladder is the solution.
Only grabbing ladder would make it useless, it would make the harpoon gun dead at arrival.
I think falcore’s along with the idea in this video, would be good, you can hit the ladder from the water, or the mast from the air, but not anywhere else
@@JokerP5 what about the MAST'S ladder?
The harpoon gun should only have 1x ammo so if the player fails the boarding, he shall return to the ship and reload
All i see is decks full of crates
What a fcking stupid idea, genuinely game changing.
Or at the very least, maybe make it a weapon that is based on bleed damage, which isn’t really a thing yet
Also, give me my boarding axe please rare
Or a throwable based gun/mortar weapon you can move
Why not reduce the grapple's recovery speed? For example. If you you do harpoon a ship you then slowly have to wind the roupe's drum until you're close. This way you can't just teleport anywhere. It'd give enemy crews plenty of time to notice and try to intercept you and you wouldn't be able to just fly over and teleport onto a deck. Instead having to swing like tarzan to your desired position. Loot wouldn't be immediately stolen. And it could even be more to slow down a player rather than just doing a get over here.

This is typical Rare. Come up with an interesting idea, throw it into the game half-baked. All the players find ways to grief other players with it, then Rare spends the next two years trying to “balance” it, while they continue to lose players. The arcing momentum is such an important point. Hopefully they work on that aspect.
yeah this weapon sounds like it would be an absolute disaster to the sandbox, I think one way they could balance the harpoon gun is by making the reload of it really long, like longer than any weapon in the game. imagine if you had a crank on the side of it that you had to use to charge back the "bolt" of the harpoon each time you shot it to ensure it's maximum reach.

Makes it more balanced for ship sizes without dramatic changes to other things.
i would make it a pick up like the trident (so no weapon slot but cant fight with it in hand) and it dissapers when you grapple-launch somewhere. have a refilling shelf of them next to the ammo box and a number of harpoons equal to the crew size with maybe 30sec/1minute respawn timer.
grappling loot wouldnt break it so it still makes selling or over-land transport of chests less tedious.
also i think the harpoon gun is a cool concept but you shouldnt be able to carry it with you while launching from a cannon, just use it on land or from your ship not mid-flight
(after writing i dont think i added much new to your idea but i really liked it and wanted to add some comment:)
Best way to make Harpoon gun enjoyable:
Dont make it an instant teleport like shown above, make it so if you shoot something, you almost have to reel yourself in like a fishing line.
Would make for fun and interesting mechanics besides point and teleport
Also, no sniping loot from players hands, save that for the mounted harpoon on the ship. It would ruin the game.
FACTS THIS IS A GOOD IDEA. I think maybe stealing loot could be faster because it's lighter though that'd be a great idea.
I can’t wait for it, because I’m gonna be having so much dumb fun, and make people rage because of it
Cringe Loser lol
I feel like it needs to have a timer to secure to the thing it’s grapple to. Or if your going at a certain speed it will disconnect.

Why would they send the blunderbuss to hell if the harpoon gun isnt even out yet???
I see the HPG actually being another game improver honestly, and I too solo a lot.

Played the game for the first time for a couple of months. And the lag and rubber banding were ridiculous. Fuck the updates. This game needs fixing.
The client is fked, they need unreal 5
@ThMindFdr my friend works in game development. She thinks that it would be a massive ball ache to make SOT in unreal 5. She said it's a pain in the ass to work with.
So. Giant skill gaps...like it aleeady is?
Ok so nothing will change then. i already barely can do anything in the game so this will change nothing to me
If it simply doesn’t work on ships, it could work well?
Love that you used Minecraft music for this. Was nice to hear it again.
Gotta rep the great OST
Players should have to reel the grapple gun like the fishing rod so it’s not as OP

No, then in close range naval you can guaranteed board without consequence
@@Sawwas08 ok? Thats better than a guaranteed board no matter where you are.
@@AustinsEdits better is not always good enough, it’s still a huge problem
@@Sawwas08 you’re right, let’s just delete the game then since something being better doesn’t matter. 🤡
@@AustinsEdits my point exactly 🥲
@@SweetJP. reducing the skill cap wont help the game and making the game easier doesnt make it more fun
@@pixelsot Wether it makes the game more fun or not isn't that easy to say. It's a spectrum. Some players will find it more fun, others wont. Current players that'll lose the interest in the game might leave, while other people might see this and want to play the game.
As a pirate who solo sloops a lot I disagree with almost everything you've stated
I'm looking forward even more to HPG coming out next month now because of your vod.
Even tho i understand what you are saying i have to disagree if the harpoon gun replace one of you’re two guns then you basically trade TTK for movement and it is balanced imo since you can’t one shot anymore
agreed. You'll be stuck with a single damaging weapon, making it nearly impossible to kill players, as long as they have food.
@NassimBajou I would agree but the sword exists!
They are just 3x more powerful so why would you bother with the pistol?
we saw the grapple gun 2 season ago, who knows what they changed it since then
You should join insiders if you want the answer to that question. No body else can talk about it, because of the silencing effect of the NDA.
Still gonna make game easy whether or not but makes it way more balanced 🤷♂️
(Don’t know how hard that is to code I know nothing of game coding)
Oh boy, I am excited to find out how this can be used for tall tail parcour
Good idea for the harpoon gun balancing, ships rocking would make it not as much of a free board
I hope Rare hears these concerns and is well aware.
@JokerP5 the sword is a great weapon but is not as optimal in PVP as the Blunder and EoR combo.
@@SweetJP. hmm well, I usually use sword against double gunners to take advantage of their reload time. That and to piss people off
@@JokerP5 Sword is good against bad double gunners. Sword sucks against good double gunners.
@@JokerP5 People that get pissed off is just stupid :P some complain double gunning is OP, but why is it so OP if the sword is OP too? if everything is OP, nothing is xD. it's just salty players... a construct of modern society, hehe.
They should bring back arena as a qcb type thing where you would just fight people like a tdm or something. Just instant hand to hand combat.
an easy fix is just not being able to latch onto player ships you can still harpoon players to you just the boarding mechanic won’t be messed with
The last thing I want is a galley of four armed with harpoons and swords just spamming.
I think the easiest way to balance it in the short term is to make it so you can’t use other guns if you have the harpoon gun equipped, cutlass or throwing knives only
tools not rules
The footage we saw was only in March so it could've changed a lot
I don't feel like it will be much of a problem. You miss out on a whole primary weapon. As long as you don't let the boarder get to your armory he will have a huge disadvantage if you realize him.
You could have 8 people from two Gallys harpoon onto the BBlade simultaneously 😂
I would just increase the cool down to a couple of minutes so that they can't just harpoon onto your ship on repeat.
Seems like if they balanced the speed of the harpoons it could be fine. From the gameplay I'm watching here, the harpoons are a much too effective way to board. Make it have a slower projectile, and then reel in the player more slowly. Could also make it crank loudly so it cant be used for stealth boarding.
The Harpoon that Rare presented can easily become the next Oppressor Mk II. Please: Don't make the pirate game not feel like a pirate game.
I hope they're working on SOT 2. There's so much that can be redone to make this game perfect.
