I Bought a 14th Century Manuscript Leaf! // (details of a medieval gothic psalter)

  • Yep, this is how I spend my money. In a 700 year-old piece of ink and animal skin. Don't take financial advice from me, dear friends.
    But seriously, I am over the moon with this! It is an English 14th century Medieval illuminated manuscript leaf, previously belonging to a psalter book commissioned for private use. Due to it being the official language of the church, it is written in Latin. The details in the marginalia, miniature, capital letters and line fillers are an absolute delight. As well as, of course, the wonder of this Gothic calligraphy, which I can safely assume was written with iron gall ink.
    This manuscript leaf was acquired from Phillip J. Pirages: Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts (www.pirages.com). Their book selection and customer service is as high quality as a dinner cooked with spices during the 14th century.

    For those who are curios, the psalm written is psalm 46. (It also contains the end of psalm 45.)
    Here it is: (I will highlight what’s written on the manuscript leaf.)
    In finem, filiis Core, pro arcanis. Psalmus.
    1 *_Deus noster refugium et virtus ;_*
    *_adjutor in tribulationibus quæ invenerunt nosnimis._*
    2 *_Propterea non timebimus dum turbabitur terra,_*
    *_et transferentur montes in cor maris._*
    3 *_Sonuerunt, et turbatæ sunt aquæ eorum ;_*
    *_conturbati sunt montes in fortitudine ejus._*
    4 *_Fluminis impetus lætificat civitatem Dei :__*
    *_sanctificavit tabernaculum suum Altissimus._*
    5 *_Deus in medio ejus, non commovebitur ;_*
    *_adjuvabit eam Deus mane diluculo._*
    6 *_Conturbatæ sunt gentes, et inclinata sunt regna :_*
    *_dedit vocem suam, mota est terra._*
    7 *_Dominus virtutum nobiscum ;_*
    *_susceptor noster Deus Jacob._*
    8 *_Venite, et videte opera Domini,_*
    *_quæ posuit prodigia super terram,_*
    9 *_auferens bella usque ad finem_* terræ.
    Arcum conteret, et confringet arma,
    et scuta comburet igni.
    10 Vacate, et videte quoniam ego sum Deus ;
    exaltabor in gentibus, et exaltabor in terra.
    11 Dominus virtutum nobiscum ;
    susceptor noster Deus Jacob.
    Here’s the translation:
    Unto the end, for the sons of Core, for the hidden things. A psalm.
    1 God is our hope and strength:
    a very present help in trouble.
    2 Therefore will we not fear, though the earth be moved:
    and though the hills be carried into the midst of the sea;
    3 Though the waters thereof rage and swell:
    and though the mountains shake at the tempest of the same.
    4 The rivers of the flood thereof shall make glad the city of God:
    the holy place of the tabernacle of the most Highest.
    5 God is in the midst of her, therefore shall she not be removed:
    God shall help her, and that right early.
    6 The heathen make much ado, and the kingdoms are moved:
    but God hath shewed his voice, and the earth shall melt away.
    7 The Lord of hosts is with us:
    the God of Jacob is our refuge.
    8 O come hither, and behold the works of the Lord:
    what destruction he hath brought upon the earth.
    9 He maketh wars to cease in all the world:
    he breaketh the bow, and knappeth the spear in sunder,
    and burneth the chariots in the fire.
    10 Be still then, and know that I am God:
    I will be exalted among the heathen, and I will be exalted in the earth.
    11 The Lord of hosts is with us:
    the God of Jacob is our refuge.

    I see insect damage at 7:24 where the grub has eaten the surface, four U shaped gullies. Don't leave it out on a damp castle window. You are very lucky and so is it, it was made to be in the hands that will be inspired, so it is still doing its job 700 years later. What a beautiful piece, weird material when you held it up to the light.

      I am over the moon at being able to see it up close and intimately. A long time ago I bought a page from a manuscript of some sort of legal text that had been damaged and so the book was broken up into leaves for sale at quite approachable prices. It's packed away somewhere that I can't find it, or I would happily share it. But I was allowed by the seller to dig through his pile of leaves and so I picked out one or two that were more complicated with all of those kinds of details. There were margin notes in the margins of the margin notes. As a desktop publishing worker, I nerd out hard about this stuff. I think my piece was on some kind of linen paper, which pretty much means it's made of scrap clothing from the era. It's crazy to imagine holding clothing from that far back, just like you were holding treated animal skin from an animal that far back. Wish I could shoot pictures of the details with my digital camera. Cheers!

    7:57 That little detail of the drawn white gloss lines being _slightly_ imperfect made me skip a breath. It humanized the person from 700 years ago in a way that, despite my best efforts, is usually difficult to accomplish.

    I concur with everyone in the comments here. Once again, a time-travel experience. You're quickly making a medievalist out of me! Just yesterday, we were talking about the furniture in the apartment and I wonder what a visitor would feel if we furnished it exactly as a typical apartment like this would be in 1600, or even when your manuscript was written! Perhaps your next purchase should be a chair or table or wall mirror...hopefully for less than you paid for this!

    • @SolisScriptorivm
      @SolisScriptorivm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Glad to hear! And I would indeed love a fully furnished Medieval apartment! Although I have to disagree on the ideal price. If it's less than what I paid for this, it likely involves unethical labor and cheap materials. I'd rather furnish little by little with ethically crafted pieces, even if it takes a lifetime to reach the ideal apartment. It is a constant work in progress, just like everything else!

    IT is fine vellum, which is usually calf skin, usually young calf. Parchment is thicker and not transparent like this page. These thin vellum leaves made the bindings much more compact. The face is most likely God, not Jesus as a Psalter is Old Testament, but it could also be David as he is considered the writer of most of the Psalms.

    Congrats on the purchase! That being said, I do wonder if it’s wise to sell medieval manuscripts on the private market. As a hopeful historian, I’ve seen this encourage a dangerous trade that has only recently started to die down, whereby merchants vandalise artefacts such as medieval books to sell fragments like pages or illuminations on. This also denies scientists the opportunity to examine these artefacts and analyse them. The practice is deeply damaging to history and incredibly disturbing, so do take care to buy from a reputable supplier that does not deal in stolen or looted goods!

      @SolisScriptorivm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@skieswatcher9321 I was wondering that! Along with the vertical lines next to it. My theory is that the word after the blue rectangle, "nimis." is the end of the previous line. I think for space maximizing purposes, the scribe chose to finish the sentence in this way instead of finishing this last word in the beginning of a new line, only to waste the rest of it with a line filler. The clue is in where the punctuation is (I'm assuming placed there for clarification), and the fact that the line under the capital "P" starts with a lower case.
