  • On September 23, 2024 a group of U.S. Air Force F-16s were scrambled to intercept two Russian Tu-95 Bear bombers escorted by two Su-35s. Once they arrived, the American F-16s got a first-hand look at why Russian fighter pilots are often described as "unsafe and unprofessional."

They see us deter ourselves at every turn, so they test us, we fail, and they invade some other place. Or they have us back down from something we're doing. US pilots fly almost exclusively with the master arm switch off, even in combat, only setting it to the arm position when they are going to employ a weapon and then it is right back to the off position. This is to prevent the very thing you are mentioning just in case the pilot squeezes the trigger in a panic. For air-to-air the master arm switch only goes on when an engagement begins or they are cleared hot, and then right back off when the situation abates.

It must be odd for these Russian pilots to see an F-16 painted in the same style as your fighter escorts roll up next to your own plane. I grew up in Alaska as the military dependent in which my father was on these sorties on a regular basis, and can vouch for the fact that these antics go on every single day from Russia and have never stopped, and has plenty of 35 mm pictures to prove it.
    I don't think they're being more aggressive or less aggressive today, it's possibly more pronounced now that more people have access to cell phones and GoPro's.
    FYI- Back in the day, it was not uncommon for Russian aircraft to be well within our 100 mile border, flying with their bombers or tankers and of course a couple fighter wingman… So none of this surprises me whatsoever! 💁💁💁

    If you want to be a pilot in the USAF, USMC or USN, each branch requires a ~10 year commitment. The USMC and USN require 8 years AFTER flight training, so the total still ends up being right around 10. It could be a little shorter if you're doing rotary wing, and I'm not sure about the US Army, but this video is mostly fighter pilots. But figure if you're a college student in the neighborhood of 23-24 years old, by the time you finish your first commitment as a pilot, you'll be in your 30s and will have ~3000 flight hours under your belt if you're a fighter pilot. If you're a bomber or transport pilot, it could be double that.
    The amount of time and training along with the associated expense in fueling and maintaining aircraft is not a small investment. To say American military pilots are the best in the world is not an understatement or an idle boast. Russians do not get nearly this investment in their air force or pilots. That explains why they are engaging in this kind of stupidity with aircraft they can't afford to replace.
    If MQ-9 drones suddenly started employing self-protection measures for proximity violations, I'll be the Russian pilots would be far less likely to engage in that kind of buffoonery.

    • @scottw5315
      @scottw5315 16 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Nobody gets that kind of flight time anymore that I'm aware of. A twenty year guy might get 3000 hours in tactical jets. I suppose transports and bombers get more. Don't know. You don't stay in the cockpit forever in most cases. In the USMC you'll do three to four years in a squadron and then some other job for several years. So, normally only in a squadron about half of your career. A lot of guys will do a training command tour to rack up hours then jump to the airlines.

The most infamous incident involved the collision with a P-3 that had to emergency-land in Hainan (the PLANAF died--he was feted like a great hero and medalled up, of course) that took place while Bush Jr. was president a couple of decades ago, before Emperor Xi started his reign, and it's only gotten worse after Xi, with daily harassment of Taiwan by warplanes and ships. PLANAF's new favorite activity seems to involve firing off flares in front of other nation's aircraft. In the last year or so PLAN has been routinely playing bumper ships with the Filipinos, damaging not only ships but injuring multiple Filipino sailors.

The Russian showing his big hot twin engines to an F-16 for a perfect rear aspect shot would get him killed in a heartbeat.
      The F-16 may not have had his radar on at that point or was just getting data from datalink, but at that range, it doesn't matter. The AIM-9 will have no trouble finding the engines at that range, and an AMRAAM would lock on with its own seeker almost immediately. Unsafe, yes. Unprofessional, I don't think so. Culturally Russia uses intimidation. It makes sense to me that Russian pilots would do the same. The 20 year old racing in a mustang is a partially correct analogy, but it leaves out that his superiors are likely telling the 20 year old to "f--k" around, hence it's all purposeful. Even if they lose a jet and crew, it will not change their attitude and actions for than a couple months.

    • @3storiesUp

      Correct. My Polish wife, who spent her childhood under Communism, says the very same thing. With Russians, it's all about intimidation, bluster and lies. They genuinely don't care and truly believe in their own superiority. This bell-end carried out this manoeuvre, knowing that there wouldn't be any repercussions whether it led to an accident or not.

Similar to someone acting out to get attention and all you do is ignore, and keep doing what you are there to do. 'Anyone' can throw a fake punch to make you flinch, but not truely reacting, shows that you are the one in control.

    We didn't have the internet in the Cold War, however some of us had front row seats on US Navy ships at sea when the Soviets came in to look at us. Very much the smaller guy trying to make a show about teasing and messing with the big bully, just to demonstrate that they could. They liked to annoy us and make us work to respond to whatever they were doing.
    Quite frankly, all the close encounters I observed were quite respectable and predictable. Soviet sailors and airmen would wave to us and we'd wave back. Nearing the end of the Cold War, no need for us expendables to act like assholes to each other because old farts in government told us we were 'enemies'. That's why the scene in the original Top Gun movie where Mav and Goose go inverted and take a Polaroid picture of the Soviet pilot, was so amusing to us.
