- Buttermilk Rusks:
1kg Self-raising Flour
Pinch of Salt
250ml Sugar
250g Butter
500ml Buttermilk
1 Egg
25ml Oil
Preheat oven to 180*C. Grease a pan.
Mix dry ingredients together and rub butter in well.
Add the egg and oil, then add the buttermilk.
Mix, and start kneading the dough.
Press the dough evenly in the pan, and cut into desired size (1 X 3 inch pieces works well).
Bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and immediately break into the sections.
Place onto a drying rack, well spaced apart, and leave to dry out in the oven for 3 to 4 hours at 120*C.
REMEMBER to leave the oven door open, just a little bit for the duration of the drying time.
Leave to cool, then pack in a air-tight container.
This is a wonderful recipe. Thank you. My husband usually buys this from the SA shops here but no need to buy them anymore. Greetings from New Zealand.
It is so easy to make, and nothing tastes better than homemade😉🌻
Thank you for this excellent recipe. First time making rusks. Perfect, will never buy again ❤
This is really a “no fail” recipe. Happy baking🌻
Thank you for sharing this God bless you all the time
It’s a pleasure. And may you be blessed as well🌻
Hi there I have tried and it came out perfect! Thank you so much.
You’re welcome. Enjoy the rusks🌻
I made this recipe yesterday using our farm coal stove! First time making rusks and I followed your recipe. Easy to follow and the recipe is great! They came out beautifully and tasted delicious in our coffee this morning 😊Thank you!
Wow, I never even tried baking in a coal stove, so definitely 🎖️ for you. There are so many variations of rusks, but this buttermilk one is my favourite. Hope you are inspired to keep on baking🌻
Looks simple and delicious. Thanks a lot. Will try it .
Hope you enjoy🌻

Baie dankie vir die mooi boodskap🌻
Yummy, dit lyk HEEL lekker. My mond water nou.😅
Dankie. Dit is so maklik om te maak🌻
Thank you for the awsom recipy, what size is yor pan ? Or how thick should it be rolled out ?
It should be around 1.5 cm thick. My pan is 35cm X 40cm. I’ll be posting another rusk video soon🌻
Hello, baie dankie vir die resep, ek gaan dit probeer. How long do these home made rusks last when stored in air tight container?
Dis regtig maklik om te maak. Dit word gewoonlik binne 2-3weke geëet in ons huis, maar ek is seker as dit goed geseel is, sal dit baie langer hou🌻
I usually use cake flour . How many teaspoons of baking powder?
When using cake flour, you can add two to two and a half teaspoons of baking powder to every cup of flour. 🌻
Hi love the recipe but havent tried it. Can i use margarine instead of butter or can it only be made with butter.
Margarine is perfectly fine. Sometimes when I don’t have butter in the fridge, I use margarine, and it turns out just as good🌻
Thank you so much for your reply, much appreciated😊
Hi there, Please can you tell me where you got your baking tray and cutter from?
@@RoseDouglasTravelwithUsExplore you will be able to find the tray and cutter (combo) at baking stores in South Africa. I’ve seen them at CAB Foods.
As ek die resep wil aanpas met Glutenfree meel. Hoeveel meel, botter en karringmelk gebruik ek dan?
Ek het so ongelukkig nooit self gluten-free beskuit gebak nie. 🌻
Hello ,I am going to try this , can i put vanilla essence in
I put vanilla essence in most of my baking, but never tried in my rusks. Although the buttermilk gives it a wonderful taste, I think adding a teaspoon or two of vanilla might make it even better. I am definitely going to try it with my next batch. 🌻
It looks as if you are adding 500g of butter and not 250g ?
It is 250g (Econo Foods sell them in smaller blocks/bricks)🌻
