  • A viewer named "Falcon" asked me to explore this topic on a previous video. You've probably heard people describe themselves as "Spiritual" but NOT "Religious". What does this mean? Is it possible to separate these two ideas? How do we define what they mean? I often hear people talking this way in response to the idea of participating in "organized religion" in favor of a more personalized, customized understanding of a greater reality. But does it make sense? Let em know what you think below. Thanks for watching! Music:bensound.com

In my journey, being spiritual but not religious meant freedom. However, with no guidance based on a foundation, I almost ended up dead and most likely in help. So much for freedom. Now I know I want True Freedom in Christ. But it means doing it His Way, not mine.

My tendency is to fall into the religious side of the spectrum rather than being spiritually and religiously balanced. However, receiving the Eucharist as frequent as possible has been of tremendous help. Knowing that I am receiving Jesus himself in the Eucharist, through which He abides in me and I abide in Him, is the perfect reminder of the the perfect Spiritual and religious balance.

What about a relationship with Jesus
Did you know he was not a Catholic
Jesus was a Jew and he died a Jew
He did some preaching to clarify the teachings of the Old Testament
He was killed and his apostles went on to
teach about Christ and his life
      The followers became Christians
Many years later the Catholic Church organized
with the help of Constantine a Roman
Emperor who made the religion official for Rome
They combined Catholic teachings with pagan Roman religions
In 1500s Luther split the church because it was out of control morally
Protestants went on to be England and
      Germany and France
Catholics became the religion of Italy and Ireland
So which religion is the true one
      Look up Spanish Inquisition
      Look up selling of indulgences
      Look up
      Martin Luther
      Look up history of popes
Or decide if you know the Bible and what Jesus taught
Do you think he wants you to worship his mom as queen of heaven
Do you think Jesus wants a pope and Vatican
Do you think Jesus wants you Praying to Saints Idols Statues or the dead 💀
      Have a good day

Wow Keith, that was also a question in my mind before but never got a chance to ask anyone, I always wonder what’s the difference. You have a great answer and I think of myself as both, religious/spiritual. Now because I’m a Sunday school reacher in my parish, could you please give me a much simpler explanation for young minds as young as 4th graders. Also, is spirit and soul the same thing? I don’t know how to explain that if one day I get the question so I have to be ready. I love your youtube talks and please pray for the children coming back this year and those might not to Sunday school in about 2 weeks or so. Time is really passing by like a twister!

      @andrewdrew677 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Neona Journey hi good question
Your answer lies in Romans 8 v 1 to 16
I would suggest using the NIV or NASB version as it’s easier to grasp
Here’s an example of how the Father wants us to worship him John 4 v 23
Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks
The KJV says it even better.
We all have flesh (our bodies ) we all have a soul (which is our carnal mind )
We all have a spirit within this tent our flesh.
What raised Jesus from the dead was Holy Spirit and that’s what’s going to raise us up Romans 8 v 10 , here are two more verses regarding this John 6 v 63 the word quikeneth ( to make alive ) very important in this verse of John 6 and you will note Jesus says the flesh profits nothing.
John 3 v 1 to 21 here Jesus teachers of the spirit is spirit and flesh is flesh v6 to 8 are as clear as daylight then to sum it all up 1 Corinthians 6 v 17 and Ephesians 1 v 13 you are sealed forever ( like vacuum packed ) this is your identity in Christ Jesus not your flesh or mind or feelings but faith in the knowledge you are sanctified (made Holy by faith receiving Holy Spirit and now being joined together your spirit in Christ Jesus through Holy Spirit)
2 Thessalonians 2 v 13 and Hebrews 10 v 10 take note on the word ONCE this is a permanent standing before the Father which you have in Spirit as with this in mind when you read this passage it will come to life for you Hebrews 6 v 4 to 6
There are many verses with corresponding to the above should you seek more info I’ll be glad to help out

The truth behind that kind of statement - spiritual but not religious - is they know that there are commitments religion expect of them like supporting the Church financially, which they do not like to do. Another thing, being involved in a religious organization takes their time, thus reducing their time for fun and pleasures - like spending more than an hour getting ready for Church and including one hour of listening to the Gospel and homilies which they find hard to agree with because they already have set their own belief. These are the selfish kind of people. They only care about themselves. They are also in denial, refusing to accept their faults and imperfections.

Being truly devoutly religious means that you better be deeply spiritual, especially if you're Catholic. Funny, those that criticize us for reciting rote prayers, don't mention those Eastern religions that do the same thing. Prayer comes in many forms. They are tools for us to use to participate in a close relationship with God.

I'm spiritual and not religious, never have been religious.
Being religious is believing someone else's experience of God, being spiritual is having your own experience of enlightenment.
Hate what religion does to mankind. If you are Christian then you know you were given free will, there is no need to submit to God.
God is in all of us. Being spiritual means following spiritualism.

      @LivingMyBestAlways 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Marci HF Y’all don’t have a clue on what being Spiritual is about for another person. God is a Spirit and we’re spiritual beings.
The Bible don’t talk about religion Jesus said take up your cross and follow him.
The only thing I don’t do as me being a Follower a Spiritual Being I have a personal relationship with the Heavenly Father I don’t attend any church building. I do worship the FATHER Every day and I have a day that belongs to the Father fully.
And with the FATHER ‘S Guidance each day it leave to room for stumbling in my faith or yielding to temptation. As I read a lot of comments that Christians say we stumble in our sins every day that’s a whole lie.
When I was in darkness i use to tell myself when I do become a Christian I don’t empathize to backslide like I see many Christians do or do any old things like I know pastors and church goers to sleeping with each other in the church, still lying
I wanted to be different I wanted to be ready to obey the command of the FATHER without looking back to my old life. So being Spiritual for me is obeying the FATHER ‘S commandments. Church didn’t save me I ask the FATHER to change me but I didn’t realize he change me until 18 months after I didn’t put it together. But the final straw for me was I simply as God what he want from me what he want me to do. And 3 weeks after that I was saved my life began I’ve finally found love Peace Joy and HAPPINESS that this world didn’t give to me.
So yes I am SPIRITUAL with a personal relationship with the ALMIGHTY CREATOR FATHER.
And this relationship allows me to live a righteous loving forgiving selfless Joyful Peaceful. I would never say I won’t go in a church but I won’t be a member of a church. If I see a need to help out someone with money or food or a hug whatever the need be I’m in. What makes me happy is to hear others talk about GOD but to question one walk is a big problem unless of course y’all see someone being ungodly doing ungodly things. Church didn’t save me the FATHER himself took the desires of this world from me. And put me in his world. That is more fulfilling.

@@LivingMyBestAlways , well, there you have it; Jesus didn’t even have to come, because you’ve saved yourself! I guess you even baptized yourself, although I think that isn’t how Jesus said to do it. What’s more is there was no need for him to build His Church, obviously, you’re a saint and you don’t need His Church. And it was unnecessary for Him to begin His sacrifice with a communal meal and command us to share this meal, because you’re saved already and you didn’t need that. I could go on but you probably get the point.

In the name of religion, they abuse powers, get involved in embezzlement of funds, create war & many are self serving. I believe Spirituality will give one the right "guidance & conscience", and will somehow do the 'right thing'. But thanks for your definition religion having stemmed from "relation". Makes sense. Keith,Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us.As you yourself have stated I find my self in the same circumstance many many times.....”Spiritual” in MY way of thinking .......not disciplined but rather selfishly, my interpretation of what I think works.....OR IS OK by my rules rather than GOD’S Rule.. At other times, I am religious in following my FAIYH (Catholic Doctrine) but NOT LIVING IT as JESUS taught us. He did tell that first we must LOVE GOD ... WITH ALL OUR HEART.....but he, JESUS concluded by saying that.....WE MUST LOVE OUR NEIGHBORS AS WE LOVE OURSELVES....and to me this is where RELIGION and SPIRITUALITY and stand on common ground and enhance each other. When I falter which is often I have found that I can bring myself back too CENTER by meditating on this simple thought ........” LORD HELP ME... TO ABIDE IN YOU .......AS YOU ABIDE IN ME...” My Faith has taught me many times over (77 years) that CHRIST so LOVES US and that HE is with us and in us ALWAYS and FOREVER my prayer is that I want give Him that same TRUST BACK.....MICHAEEL Talbots sings a wonderfully inspirational hymn that tell ... we are the Hands and Eyes of GOD and if we live our lives treating others with that in mind then and only then are WE abiding in HIM as as HE UNCONDITIONALLY ABIDES ALWAYS IN US...

Ditch religion and denominations and just seek the word of God. Denominations don't do anything for anybody except confuse people to death. We don't get into heaven based on theological differences. We get into heaven based on Jesus and that's it. Anything else other than Jesus you can throw out the window.

Okay, so which Gospel will you follow? You might remind yourself that all Gospels are based on the teaching of someone. For Catholics we follow the original teachings. Read the Fathers of the Church, the early Church. Now, if you are not for their teaching, those closest to the apostles, whom do you follow, ideas from Luther, Calvin and the like? Christianity doesn't begin in the 16th century.

Hello. This is the first video I have seen of yours, and I have to say that it seems unfair to discuss a topic from a one-sided point of view. You are obviously religious, and I am happy for you if it brings you peace. But I am not religious- I am spiritual. And it would be a much more open discussion if you brought someone in to explain what being spiritual, but not religious, means to them. And for you to also discuss what being religious means to you. I want to note that my intention is not to say that you or your beliefs are wrong, but that this could use more representation from both perspectives, to provide a healthy discussion to open minds from either side. Just an idea.

Thanks for watching :) Welcome to my channel. The point of my video is not to have an open discussion, but to put forth my view. The discussions can happen in the comments. If I felt like I needed to have every other point of view presented in each video, that would be impossible. That's the beauty of TH-cam. We can all make videos about what we think and then people can weigh in the comments. Thank you so much!! I really appreciate you watching :)

This video has deep personal relevance for me. For years, I was in the spiritual but not religious camp. Now I have reconnected with my Catholic faith but I still have moments where I doubt my own heart. Am I doing enough? Is going to Mass enough? All my imperfections get laid bare when I ponder this one. A large part of why I stayed away from church was because I know God knows my heart even better than I do and He would know if I was just faking it. I was convinced He would rather I stay away than live a lie. But that was Satan getting in there and putting that wedge between me and God. He wanted me for his own. Like I say, I still struggle with the question, am I dong enough, but something is better than nothing and my heart is in the right place now. I'll write off the doubts to Satan and keep walking the path with God. I have faith, and faith is enough. The rest is a work in progress, as it is for all of us. Now I have to match my actions with that faith but it's easier now because unlike before, I'm not alone.

The most important is to be honestly connected to God and that is only possible for certain awaken people. If you want to be with God , but are mixed with those who are not ready to do that in religious institutions, then there’s no point to go to those institutions. Only being by yourself can people get awaken and truly connect to God. That’s why being spiritual is better than being religious.

In my probably simplistic viewpoint, I see the way to the left and to the right and then the narrow way of faith in the middle. The way to the left is like that of the Pharisees. It's a philosophy of life that is based on rules and laws. The Christian Pharisee focuses on their salvation and has a transactional relationship with God. They give some of themselves now with the idea that they have some kind of benefit later. Their mantra is full of religious pride - "You are evil because you don't take the law as seriously as I do".
To the right we have the occult and its many variations of the same philosophy of life which is - "you are your own god". The mantra of the occult is "do what you want, there are no repercussions for your actions".
The middle and narrow path is the way of Jesus. That is to learn to trust in Him to the point where you give your whole heart to Him. It's that point of relationship where you can honestly say to Him: "Let your will be done". It's that point in Gethsemane where Jesus Himself wants His Father to spare Him from what He knows is coming - but still let Your will be done.
There is no transactional relationship here. It's simple obedience to say and to do whatever He wants you to because His ways are best. His ways are good. His ways are perfect.
As a side note, it's not the occultists that Jesus banged heads with the most. It's the Pharisees. It's the religious leaders of the day. The Pharisees rise up the ranks of the church. They bang out the law. They judge everyone and do nothing to bear the load. They are so certain of their own righteousness that they don't recognise that Christ is not even in relationship with them.
Many of us Christians are so careful to avoid anything from the occult, but fail miserably to recognise the real enemy of Jesus - the miserable, heartless, hateful religious Pharisee that is right in front of us.

Ok I enjoy this video but I must say this Religious and Spirituality goes Hand and Hand. I refuse to look at this as a one ways street, because I don’t belong to a Church or Religious because I belong to God. I read the Words of God , I pray and meditate and manifest on those words, I understand that God made promises to us. The reason people are not secure or successful is because they don’t KNOW THE WORDS. Understand that God made it a Petition(Law) to serve him first before all Things. GOD LIVES IN US WHEN WE ALLOW HIM IN. Understand in the Book of Genius 1: 26-28, GOD gave us (Dominions or Humans) Control of Earth. HE GAVE US FREEDOM BUT SOMETHING COMES WITH HAVING THAT FREEDOM. GOD Cares way more about our Success, our security, our riches, our goals , our happiness and our joy more than we do, but because we didn’t let HIM in and Commanded anything we want in life from HIM, all of it doesn’t matter. God is a Man of his Words, in order for God to work for your life, you have to let him in your life. Spirituality means Freedom and God want you to be Free and with HIM.

The Greeks added their own mythology to the New Testament from Plato's ideas of Heaven and Hell. Jesus did not believe that. I know too much about the history of the NT to embrace what almost all Christian churches believe in. God's plan of salvation cannot fail. Which is why I am SBNR.

As a proterstant I'm kinda sick of the "vain repatition" argument from other proterstants against our catholic brothers in christ. Repeating holy prayers in the name of the father, son and holy spirit is repetition but it isn't vain. The passage about vain repetition is not saying repetitive preyer in and of itself is bad. Repetative preyers to other gods is vain and repetiteve preyers that aren't from the heart is in vain. If Jesus was condeming all repetitive preyer he wouldn't have qualifide it by saying "vain repetition" he would have just said "repatition".

I’m more of a Unitarian Christian than anything. You can’t tell me that god wanted churches in the past to execute people because they didn’t believe in the trinity. Same with Islam, which isn’t a religion of peace by the way. The problem I have with religions, is science is neglected in some ways. However, I love the Christian core values, so I therefore identify as a Unitarian Christian. There was evidence Jesus was a real man that was influenced by god, which is great. Wouldn’t a true Christian accept someone who’s spiritual but not religious?

Being spiritual in my accordance is to feed food that your soul (spirit) is wanting :) and the food that soul is craving for is already written in many holy scriptures (in religious books) and by ref to these scriptures is how millions of people on earth have already experienced a power ( GOD ) and have already built their belief system in their religion.... now what ever new term you coin in like this , I am sure one day when the community grows , you might be willing to publish your own scripture (one more faith) but the challenge will be from where (which scriptures ) will you derive the good and bad things to do in life , or if suppose you will not refer any scriptures it will take centuries to experiment with mankind , to analyse , to observe and to conclude that these these things is what you do to satisfy the inner self , but what my belief is that by doing all these again we will be coming back to point zero where it started and your community may name the new power that you experience with new noun ( like 'the Universe' ).
Its like you are reverse engineering religion to get to a goal , 2 + 2 = 4 is already proved to the world , but you want to add to the people mind that 3 + 1 also equals 4 but you don't know what that 3 and 1 actually already been defined ..

Belief in invisible spirits was an almost universal response by primitave man to explain inexplicable events by positing invisible beings as the responsible agents. Belief in spirits is unnessary. Spiritual values are those values which are held in Reverence and Awe.

People who say that they do not need to go to church to pray, that they can talk directly to God... actually do not pray much or they end not praying at all... We need to relink also to a brotherly community of faith. The ethymology of the word religion is a subjet of debate. Some say that it comes from relegere (to peruse, to accomplish one's duties with accuracy), others from religare (relink). I do not see how it could come from relegere, the expected latin noun for this verb being rather relectio, but this sense is in a certain way also present when we say to accomplish something religiously (accurately). It would seem as if the word religion came from religare, but was also influenced in some expressions by the verb relegere.

Thanks brother awesome message , having been both catholic and Protestant there were many scriptures which went against the teachings of both churches. religions mix Law and Grace and believe in faith with works for salvation and sanctification comes through works of the flesh by way of rituals / sacraments and continued forgiveness ,therefore being justified is temporal , what should we do with Hebrews 10 especially v18 or Romans 3 v 24 how does this fit in to catholic and Protestant dogma ? Catholic Faith Parish Priests page 98 sec C one of many examples
You cannot be justified Monday morning and by the afternoon not . This means that Sin has dominion over your standing before God what kind of a identity is that ?
Scripture gives an entirely different teaching from Romans 5 v 17, Galatians, Corinthians so on .
All of us who are believers , regardless of mans teachings will stand before the Father one day alone , those that are covered by the blood of Christ are those with Holy Spirit being joined with there spirit as stated in 1 Corinthians 6 v 17 .Having been made alive in Spirit John 6 v 63 and sealed in spirit Ephesians 1 v 13 forever
walking by the spirit Galatians 5 v 16 to 18 and through faith in the knowledge of 2 Corinthians 5 v 21 being my new identity in spirit and not my flesh , this is biblical faith alone and not religion True works are through walking in the Spirit and not by way of my flesh as works of the flesh are dead works , just so no one one may boast of there good works through Holy Spirit, as this is a gift of God by His Sons finished work having been sealed now producing the fruits of the Spirit within me .Ephesians 2 v 9 this is what contradicts used by the church ( a licence to sin )
Religion argues that we are still under law to be justified/sanctified and that Paul’s writings are indicating the law on parchment, basically the laws given to the Jewish people (we are not under law but under grace is true gospel yet all say it’s not the 10 commandments ) this scripture clearly shows us that we are justified by grace alone by Christ Jesus for filling the law written on stone for us as a free gift
    2 Corinthians 3 v 6 to 8 verse 7 clearly shows what law .
When we walk in the Spirit , Holy Spirit testifies Hebrews 10 verse 16 to my heart and guides my flesh ,infirmities of my carnal mind and not by way of sacraments and confessing sins
The law is the knowledge of sin not the knowledge of holiness.
Holy Spirit will renew your carnal mind this takes time as we grow in the word Romans 12 v 2
2 Corinthians v 12 to 18 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them
I do respect however both Protestant and Catholic believers as we all should strive to be the body of Christ
We have to question ourselves should we not be getting a fresh revelation of our Lord Jesus daily through Holy Spirit , as this is true repentance which cannot be found outside of faith and his word
The Father sends his Spirit to work in us all even when we are in sin a clear example of this would be Saul who whilst persecuting and killing all believers in Christ wrote most of the New Testament by the power of Holy Spirit .the Father did not choose a man of great stature but a man Paul in the midst of evil acts of the flesh.
We all have a mind /soul , body /flesh and spirit . what is going to have eternal life , John 6 v 63 only our spirit being joined together with HolySpirit .John 4 v 23 to 24

Really enjoying your channel. You're spot on about this topic. I've found that most people want to believe in a God that agrees with them on everything. Most people don't want to be told how they should act or what they should do. It's only when we realize that God's ways will lead us to the best life possible that these "rules" seem less restrictive and more freeing. Lincoln said that freedom is not the right to do what we want but what we ought. Truer words were never spoken. God bless!!

I encounter this quite a bit. There's a misconception that being "religious" is a bad thing. But that would have been a foreign concept to the early Christians-- they were religious. Those claiming to be spiritual tend to mean that they are creating God in their own image, rather than living out the faith as received by those who handed it on to us from those who handed it to them, going as far back as the Apostles who received it from Christ. Being "religious" can be a bad thing, however, when it devolves into a scrupulous practice of the external religion without an internal relationship with Christ. But those who pit religion against spirituality are acknowledging that they don't understand either one.

Although this was posted 4 years ago I really needed that questioned answered. I watched a video of someone who said they don't believe in God and that they live thier life spiritually. Yeah, spiritually in sin. It didn't sit with me well, and now I was blessed by running into this video that you posted Keith. Well said sir, your truly blessed by the Father, blessed Mother, and the fervor of the Saints.
    God Bless 🙏

Most of the people I have met who declare that they are spiritual, not religious have had bad experiences with " religious" people who clobber others with their religiosity. Thank you for talking about Catholicism and your conversion in ways that invite people to learn about the Church and what it teaches.

Leobardo, if you click on "CC" that will turn on subtitles. Then if you click on the gear-looking thing for settings, and select auto-translate you can select spanish. Then youtube will auto-generate spanish subtitles. It's not a perfect translation but it's understandable. Hope that helps!

    • @DainBramaged00
      @DainBramaged00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

PS: you can also slow down the video to 75% speed so the subtitles do not go by too fast :)

    • @DainBramaged00
      @DainBramaged00 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Thank you, for explaining the difference of these two. Many of my protestant friends or family
members tell me 'you are religious' because I like to go to Mass daily when I can. Pray my rosary, visits to Blessed Sacrament....so on.

Are you following Jesus Christ a Christian
Or following the Catholic Churches traditions
      They are so different
Jesus never said pray to my mom
      Pray to a pope
      Confess to a man
      Pray to Saints and idols
That tradition comes from pagan religion
To follow Jesus you need to know the Bible

That's the new theme for folks. Who don't believe in God or choose to walk in the middle of the road. But if you didn't birth yourself into the world. Then you have no power when it's time to leave this word. So foolishness prevails in a world of boastful people. Either you're Hot or Cold. God gives you a choice. Your battle is not with him but within you. 💯

I have just discovered your channel and subscribed. You are doing the spiritual works of Mercy with your videos. Christ initially formed you as an evangelical. He is now using you to do the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
    The Spiritual Works of Mercy
The seven practices of Catholic charity toward our neighbor's soul:
    1. Admonishing the sinner
    2. Instructing the ignorant
    3. Counseling the doubtful
    4. Comforting the sorrowful
    5. Bearing wrongs patiently
    6. Forgiving injuries
    7. Praying for the living and the dead

    • @waltermromanoff349
      @waltermromanoff349 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Where did you come up with that information
How about accepting Jesus as your lord and savior
Jesus said pray only to me I am the way to the father
Jesus said we must be born again to enter heaven
Jesus said love him and love one another
Walk by faith not by sight
If you try to follow those rules you will
      be a disappointed judgements Christian
      Praise and worship Jesus
      Learn the Bible
      Love one another
      Try those rules

Lastly Jesus said don’t pray to the dead they can’t hear you
When you pray to the dead you will be involved in the occult and will be dealing with
      Satans Spirits
So now you know when you die you will be judged heaven or hell
Purgatory is not biblical it’s pagan occult
      teachings
