Spirituality Vs. Religion: A Deep Analysis

  • What's the difference between spirituality and religion? For the majority of my life, I was opposed to religion and when I would hear the term "spirituality", I'd just associate it with religion, and therefore saw no interest in pursuing. I've now come to realize the two terms are very different. Spirituality refers to a wanting to connect to something higher than oneself, which is like religion, but spirituality is a much broader concept. Religion seeks something higher than oneself but there's rules to religion. You're forced to adopt certain beliefs and relay your thoughts and experiences towards the beliefs of that religion. In spirituality, there are no rules. You must find all the answers yourself. In this video, I compare and contrast spirituality and religion on a deeper level.

    About me
Hello everyone, my name is Wyeth and I originally created this channel to share some insights about life and the universe that I had on psychedelics, and how they can be used to change one’s life for the better. Now, this has evolved into me seeking to dedicate my life to understanding the truth about the nature of reality, the self, and consciousness at the deepest level. Because these subjects deal with the fundamental nature of who we are, I believe knowledge from these fields can be used to help one live a more wholesome and authentic life in all aspects.
I pride myself in taking an anti-dogma approach in my inquiry, therefore I will examine all topics of interest through a variety of lenses. If this of interest to you, I highly suggest you become a Curious Mind by subscribing.
If you wish to get in touch with me, you can send me a DM on Instagram (where I post a lot more content about this stuff), or you can email me.

Religion and spirituality can be together, and many people find spirituality inside their religion, and for them, these differences may not be so relevant or true, since the two things are mixed. But for those interested in pure spirituality, regardless of religious affiliation, let me expand on the difference between religion and spirituality.
-Religion asks you to believe. Spirituality asks you to look.
-Religion has dogmas. Spirituality has wisdom teachings.
-Religion wants obedience. Spirituality wants experimentation.
-Religion speaks of sin and hell. Spirituality speaks of karma.
-Religion wants to comfort you. Spirituality wants to liberate you.
-Religion is external. Spirituality is internal.
-Religion is the form. Spirituality is the essence.

As a Christian, I agreed with 95% of what you said! A lot of us are unfortunately religious instead of spiritual which leads people to believe that following Christ is about following rules despite the fact that the Bible encourages us to look at life through a spiritual lense.
You will heard us Christians say it’s a relationship instead of religion because of how limiting religion is. Take the Pharisees in the Bible for example: they were so set on following religion they didn’t even realize that the very Son of God was amongst them and had him killed. Religious people killed Christ.
Like someone else said in the comments, true Christians are spiritual. I wish I could go on but this comment is long enough.

When I got married we had to take classes first, when my kids were baptized we had to take classes with the god parents and they had to be approved. I come from a long line of Catholics but all the red tape and strict rules didn’t endear me to the church. It was annoying.
Spirituality does inspire me to spread love to others and find my purpose at my own pace.
It was such a blessing to find spirituality which truly brings joy. It inspires me positively and that trickles down to other people. And I literally lost my desires for material things. It changes you.

I was raised on Christianity. I went to VBS every summer, to church every Sunday and sometimes Wednesdays. I was also baptized out of my own choice to be. I eventually started doubting secretly and became depressed. I converted to Buddhism to raise my energy and it worked! I went back to Christianity. THEN I discovered numerology. I now consider myself to be spiritual and I have a hard time explaining what exactly I believe because it feels ridiculous when I try to. But I believe in energy and karma as almost a religion of sorts. I also believe in reincarnation. My family doesn't know but my husband is okay with it, and for that I'm grateful. He's Catholic and my cousin/best friend is Christian. I'm 29 now and I still want to believe in Jesus Christ but because we don't know what happens after death, it gives me all the more reason to explore. We don't know if any of us is right or wrong.

    • @rachaeljackson3759

I can totally relate! I grew up Seventh Day Adventist which is a Christian denomination. When I was young, I was very attached to the religion. Choose to get baptized at around 8 or 9 years old. Kinda grew out of that but still was forced to go to church and all that stuff. I went to Christian schools my whole life. It wasn’t until college where I said to myself “ok I need to step away from this religion and ask myself is this what I really believe.” So now…I’m trying to figure it out, but it can be scary. For us kids who were raised Christian we were taught if we don’t believe in God or do what he wants then we are damned to hell. If that’s true then I guess I’m screwed, but I hate the idea of that. All these religions, wars over religions, because we all have a slightly different opinion on what life is! It’s enough to make my head spin. I honestly feel like we’re all right and we’re all wrong. If God is real then I think he exists in different ways to different people. The world is too big, there are too many people in this planet or universe for only ONE group of us to be right.

@rachaeljackson3759 omg. My husband believes that exact same idea! The number 13 follows every major religion. Jesus and the 12 disciples for one example. He was raised Catholic, and he believes it, but he also thinks that our higher being shows itself to us in the way we need. Buddha, Jesus, etc. is all the same thing. We just have different ways of identifying them. It's truly mind-boggling. Look up different religions and try to find similarities numerically. Get back to me.

God is the energy we all are the energy if you look out in the nature you can literally see that god is everywhere in everything even every breath that we take that is god right there we feel that way because we all are part of this devine energy you can call it god, mother nature, universe or whatever you wanna call it but when you truly believe, accept and surrender to this higher power you will start seeing the reality in different perspective and the true magic of life will begin to happen. I wouldn't say Spirituality has anything to do with a higher being or supernatural entity and therefore you could still be a spiritual atheist. Atheism isn't a set of values or principles its just a non belief in a supernatural entity. Nature is natural, animals are natural, the universe is natural... nothing is supernatural. I would suggest that Spirituality is the search for meaning within our human existence, our natural existence. An appreciation of the wonders of the universe as we find it, and our place in it, without trying to answer it. a search for meaning not answers.

(It's a long story but I'll shortcut it)
I got depressed and I was so mad and angry and crying questioning so much things I even did blasphemy I talked to god with curse words and ask if he exist because I was so depressed that time and then I pushed all the items in my room I was so uncontrollable destroying things and then I get tired I sat down my bed and then look at the sun facing my eyes I was so angry because my eyes is getting hurt by the light of the sun so I looked down and saw a Christian Bible
I goosebumps and picked it up saying sorry to god and then I read it and my depression got cured in 3 days of reading me
But there's something bothering on my mind do god really use the Bible to show his existence does this bible is real or just human made and I started questioning so much things that I researched online about my questions and I found spirituality and I started meditating receiving some answers yes God showed his existence through bible because that's the only thing 3D people like me before who believe that bible is the connection through god that's why he showed me a bible to show that he is real that there is a creator.

My view on spirituality is it is more of an all encompassing natural phenomenon, or in essence a fundamental truth about the universe and we are grasping at straws and trying to understand.
Religon is discouraging the grasping of said straws. It limits itself because it only allows for strict adherence to a belief against any other and questioning the religous doctrines is at many times punishable.
Science grasping at straws is encouraged and is better because it relies on facts, but still it has faults, there is rigidity and dogma especially towards the theories that have been established but which may in fact be wrong, a prime example is Alfred Wegener and his theories about continental drift and how it conflicted with the old theory that Earth never changes.
The biggest difference though, between the two, is understanding that science is not afraid to admit when it does not know how or why something happened, it tests hypotheses and changes them if the data doesn't support. When the facts and evidence outweighs the dogma of the old belief, science allows for changes to it's hypotheses after new data becomes available and accepted. Alfred Wegener and the theory of plate tectonics were only accepted after the discovery of the mid ocean ridges and the old theory just could not explain a central ridge of volcanoes constantly expanding sea floor.
I say Science is more spiritual because it seeks to understand what it does not know and it is far more philosophical than many people including scientists want to believe, I look towards music as a primary example. Most of us connect to certain songs on a very deep level. A good symphony, a moving song, they can be explained scientifically as a pleasing set of numbers if broken down into corresponding mathematics, but all the numbers and data sets in the world can't make me feel what I feel when listening to a moving song. But still I find it fascinating that there is something deeper mathematically to it all and that's where I think science and spirituality need to meet. Attempt to answer the unanswerable.
I could ramble forever and describe deeper but I feel the message would get lost so I end here.

I wouldn't put the circle of religion inside spirituality, because then so many like me that see religion as negative would be forced to label themselves outside spirituality as we can't accept religion as part of spirituality.

I spent most of my adult life, I'm now 64, searching through many, many different churches of Christianity. I believed Christianity was true but figgered that they can't all be right with so many different & often conflicting doctrines. In my mid 20's I wanted to know which denomination was the right one & that thinking plagued me for all those years of switching & swapping churches. in Jan 22 I left Christianity after discovering a series of videos on Aaron Abke's channel about his journey out of Christianity. Through mainly Aaron, Todd Perelmuter & Eckhart Tolle's channels I discovered Spirituality. I no longer live with the frustration of constantly searching for truth. I now have peace in my soul.

People often confuse spiritual soul-development with the demands of religion. Religion is usually an expression of human dualism, seeking to repair a perceived fragmentation or perceived break between man and Source--which is actually an illusion (a product of the separation mindset). Whereas reality is oneness (wholeness).
Consciousness is reality and "consciousness is meaning" (Barry J DuPont), a meaning that is non-duality. I see that meaning, that non-duality, as Oneness, where Oneness is the expression of Love.
In non-daulity there is no consciousness of fragmentation, of separation. Love is all there is, even if you are unconscious of the fact that love is all there is. Love, by its very definition, is naturally self-responsibile. Love is its own constraint. Thus our higher soul-self, when operating in this dualistic environment IS self-responsible by nature, relative of course to our level of awareness.
So there cannot possibly be any walking away from the consequences of our life after its end.
In my opinion, we are all evolving within Love and a creation of dualism where Love is constantly challenged, provides the opportunities we need for our love to evolve.
But self-accountability is not like religion where there is perceived to be judgment and punishment for failure. Love is not about failure, for Love keeps no record of wrong. Love, BECAUSE it IS self-responsible, seeks to understand the reason WHY in certain areas, growth inevitably did not take place.
Does growth matter? It seems to me that it does if your purpose is to ascend. But it will never be out of fear of punishment or hope of reward. Rather it will be the compulsion of Love.

You're too hard on yourself. I understood your analogy. I've been feeling a bit strange lately. Like you, I was an atheist, raised Catholic till around 12 I rejected the faith based on the greed of the church, harm to indigenous people, and slowly no longer believing that Jesus or the Bible were divine, though I still liked Jesus as a person I saw him moreso as "a philosopher."
I'm 19 now, and I've never done Psychedelics, but in dealing with my own issues, and now actually studying philosophy I realise that I know really nothing. Am I becoming a spiritual person? I'm not sure.
Not sure why I bothered to write this all. I guess I've had a lot on my mind, and wanted to vent just a tiny bit of it.

I do agree that spirituality is having our own experience. Its important to be focused on spiritual success. True Christians are not religious, but spiritual. Jesus Christ was a spiritual figure Who brought the importance of spiritual understanding and tried hard to get people to think and act like God. Giving us purpose by saying we are Gods children. Children holds higher positions and identity in a kingdom than servants.

Cults (and to extend, religion) try to get everyone to get the same and get everyone to follow the same path.
Spirituality is your own personal path in live that you yourself create. Its your connection and experience to your own surroundings, experiences ECT. which is independent and different then others.

Thanks for this video dude. I think I’m on some type of journey, call spiritual or existential 🤷🏾‍♀️ idk. All I know is I’ve had this burning sense and desire to connect to more than just this world. I love movies and TV shows like West World, Everything Everywhere All at Once, The Matrix, because I feel like they tackle hard topics like these. I grew up Christian and we were very much taught to stay away from ANYTHING having to do with “spirituality” because they equate that to witchcraft and stuff. So it’s hard rewiring my original hardwiring when it comes to this journey. I made a decision in college to step away from my religion I was raised in and try to find the truth that resonated with me. My dad and I have had a couple of long debates over what is “truth” and what isn’t and I think that’s what a lot of Christians get caught up on that they can’t see beyond that and connect with others who aren’t of their religion and see the possible points that might actually make sense in other religions! But I loved your video. I feel like I really resonated with a lot of the points you made!

    Intresting one ..
Being spiritual in my accordance is to feed food that your soul (spirit) is wanting :) and the food that soul is craving for is already written in many holy scriptures (in religious books) and by ref to these scriptures is how millions of people on earth have already experienced a power ( GOD ) and have already built their belief system in their religion.... now what ever new term you coin in like this , I am sure one day when the community grows , you might be willing to publish your own scripture (one more faith) but the challenge will be from where (which scriptures ) will you derive the good and bad things to do in life , or if suppose you will not refer any scriptures it will take centuries to experiment with mankind , to analyse , to observe and to conclude that these these things is what you do to satisfy the inner self , but what my belief is that by doing all these again we will be coming back to point zero where it started and your community may name the new power that you experience with new noun ( like 'the Universe' ).
Its like you are reverse engineering religion to get to a goal , 2 + 2 = 4 is already proved to the world , but you want to add to the people mind that 3 + 1 also equals 4.

  • @markbrock8662
    @markbrock8662 ปีที่แล้ว

I liked your video. I think it does a good job of showing the root of religion, which is what we believe, as opposed to what we know.
I had an enlightenment experience a couple of years ago. It came about due to some intense pain and suffering I was going through.
As a Christian, I was praying in my pain and suffering, and it was as though all of a sudden God lifted me up out of my pain and showed me Himself.
I had been a Christian over 30 years, pretty fundamental at that, and had never experienced anything like this before.
After that incident there were some serious changes in me. I no longer believed in God, I knew God. I didn't see anything or hear any voice. I just experienced the presence of God being with me, and showing me that I was not my circumstance, not my pain, and that I belonged to Him.
The things that changed in that instant:
I no longer feared death, mine or anyone's, and I lost my judgemental attitude.
Religion came clearly into focus for me, as now I could see it was based on beliefs, not on knowing. In this case, knowing God.
I can see that I am divine now, being created in the image of God. God is Spirit according to Christ, and so I can see that I am spirit as well, not body, not even mind.
But I can also see that I am not 'the' divine, the creator. My relationship to Him is clear now. I know Him, and He knows me, and we are connected.
And I am connected to all beings created in His image.
What I have come to see is that people, especially Christians, that are overly judgemental are stuck in the not knowing. It is almost as though they are reading the bible looking for a recipe to find God, and are judgemental of anything they see that contradicts any interpretation of the bible they hold. It is a mind-built identity.
It is a being kind of stuck in not knowing. Not knowing God.
Faith is good, it leads us to knowing. Knowledge is better, it leads us to being.
Before that point we are stuck in an accumulation of experience and knowledge that are smaller than our actual nature, a spirit being.
I did a meditation once,, something I found on TH-cam, some months before the experience I had. I hadn't done meditation before but thought I'd give it a try.
It was a simple repetition, and I didn't get much from it except one concept.
It went: "I am not the body" then "I am not even the mind"
That second part just kind of stopped me in my tracks. If I am not the mind, what am I?
I puzzled and puzzled over this idea for months. Then I had my enlightenment experience, and it became clear to me. I am spirit. There was just no doubt.
I am spirit, created in the image of God, who is spirit. I was not guessing or believing anymore. I knew.
If I had to guess why this happened to me, I would say that because of the long term pain and suffering I was going through, God was breaking me. Breaking down my beliefs and my pride. The pain was a tool to my awakening. It was causing me to shed everything I believed, including my puffed up pride. I wanted relief from the pain and was pretty much willing to give up anything if it would help me out of it. I think this is why pain is given or allowed in our lives by God. It leads us to Him if we will listen and work towards that. Shedding what I thought I was so I could know what/who I am.
Just wanted to share and thank you for the video.
Hope this makes some sense. It is a difficult thing to relate it to others.

The problem with many people that claim to be spiritual is they feel there is no right or wrong actions or they create ones that suit their desires. The problem with some religious people is they turn the practice of connecting to God into a kind of legal agreement where the rules can be bent as long as they are not technically broken. Christ said two things that really sum things up, "By their fruit they will be known" and "The Kingdom of God is within you" these statements, if meditated on, cut through this debate.

I don’t want to try and attach my ego to this in trying to understand. What brings me comfort tho is thinking we are all connected but diverse and in fact souls that make up the collective but still are also diverse. This makes it feel like to nothing then matters we are just alone and the same person. This creation feels like it’s meant for us to be different and expand to have union with others not just be the same person in the end. I’m trying to find my peace about this. I use to be atheist too and now am trying to search for my own understandings and peace and the most peace I feel is connection and helping others and the seems bleak that their are no others just me and if the universe is all powerful it can’t make real shared consciousness or souls? Also I’ve heard things like you can’t destroy energy and the universe is always expanding so it makes me feel like something along the lines of we are an extension of the universe but the unique energy that we have individually is our separate souls, still maybe making up the collective. Help?? 😢

Religion is conservative and narrow minded. Religious people try to fit into the confines of their religion and are full of arrogance and pride. They see their own narrow views as right and other prospectives as wrong. Which is divisive in its nature.
Spirituality is open to seeking the truth in everything, it doesn’t dictate what truth is but rather accepts it for what it is. Spirituality seeks balance and connectivity with the nature of the universe or the greater whole.

  • @theoriginaleb9616

Thank you! I feel like you have summarized many of my comments on religious videos, especially the fact that religion is quite hypocritical - it’s so divisive, while preaching to love your fellow man, etc..
I, too, am very scientifically minded, even after being raised Catholic and attending 16 years of Catholic school. However, my experience was not full indoctrination; I was given, and accepted, the opportunity to take several classes on different world religions. And my schools welcomed all peoples of all faiths and backgrounds.
I have recently taken on a self-study of religions - not only beliefs and doctrines, but where, when, and how they originated. Many religious texts are very good historical sources when you are able to recognize what to look at and what to discount. Comparing religious texts to secular accounts and archaeological evidence is fascinating.
The answers of origination vary, but basically, I believe man created the gods because they had no scientific knowledge to explain everything around them. This continues to be true to this day. But as time progresses, so does our knowledge and understanding. Religions also evolve or simply ignore proof contrary to their teachings. The Bible itself has gone through tremendous change (by man) and man decided what books (written by man) would be considered part of the religious teachings.
Following a specific religion means following the opinions of men whom you’ve never met. You should follow your own beliefs, not someone else’s.
I am almost 50, and trying to figure out where I fit and what fits me. The closest idea I feel connected to is Buddhism. But faith in something that was defined by man, but can not truly be quantified, feels unnatural.
Therefore, I think a wider concept like spirituality is something I should explore further. I do not necessarily believe that a god or a higher power doesn’t exist; I simply believe that religion/man has dictated what that higher power is, what that power is responsible for, and what that power wants. I think humans are incapable of understanding a greater power such as God, as religion (i.e. man) would have us believe. The fact is, man has no way of knowing these things, at least not yet. Perhaps someday, eons from now, we will know. But I don’t believe we ever will. Human brains are just too simple to understand something so undefinably and infinitely complex.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk. 😂

People don’t realize they create their own “Heaven or hell” every moment with the thoughts you think , the words you speak and the actions you engage in. It’s all cause and effect and understanding that everything is interconnected. That is spiritually.
People don’t make the distinction btwn the concept of God and various interpretations of the concept of God (religion). The concept of God in and of itself is unknowable. It is impossible to know for 100% certain there is or isn’t a “God.”
To me “God” is synonymous with nature/universe . It’s impersonal . Spirituality speaking, “God” is an ideal , an idea of perfection, the highest value in the hierarchy of values ….something to strive for. .
Strive to live an impeccable virtuous life and lead it with love and kindness the best you can. Practice honesty , truthfulness, respectfulness, fairness, moral justness and treat people with dignity and decency . Avoid deceiving and betraying . When you genuinely live with such principles , you are walking beside “God”. Everything is interconnected . Be mindful of your thoughts words and actions. They set the wheels of the intricate interplay of cause and effect in motion. Be self responsible and accountable for what you choose to say and do…. and choose wisely.

And to add, I think that your video is not on religion vs spirituality. It is on the fact that nearness to ones' creator can only be INDIVIDUALLY done and that assemblies of religious people carries the risk of group think, corruption, and competing interests. The biggest truth is that each of us is ONE person, ONE soul, ONE heart that is responsible for connecting with ONE creator. I am not 2, 3, 7 people, I am one person, and the only way I can attain nearness to my creator is by myself with no intercessors. Worship is deeply personal and when someone comes to you and injects their own perceptions and judgements of you and your relationship w God, this is a grave injustice on 2 parts. The first is that no person can come between someone and their creator like that, and the second is that person abandoned their own responsibility of themselves pursuing their nearness to their creator by going off to preach at someone else. And I say this as a warning to myself above all else. We are all fools screwing up and if we are honest, hoping for forgiveness. I truly appreciate the reverent ones who know their place and do not impose themselves onto others, because each one of us is taking an immense spiritual journey towards God, and it is wrong to pretend some of us can lead others. That is not for us to decide.
