In my opinion wiring is just as sexy if not more the changing a crank or piston.....Wiring is an artform....If you don't have the wire the bike wont run......Good videos and information....Keep up the good work!!!!!
These are some really great videos, my friend. In my opinion, they are the best on TH-cam when it comes to this kind of sharing. I have a suggestion, anyone can take it or leave it but on the coil side of the solenoid (with the small nuts), It's wired this way, one of the small of the terminals goes to positive feed and the other small terminal goes to the momentary starter switch. (which in most cases grounds the circuit) when pushed completing it and causing the solenoid to activate.. Some solenoids have a copper connector going from one of the large terminals and it goes to the small terminal right next to it...the big wire (always hot high amperage battery cable) from the battery goes to this one, so it makes one side of the small terminal aways hot as well. When I wire a bike from scratch I use a 12-volt red LED (polarity observed) in the solenoid - starter switch circuit on the low amperage wire coming from the starter switch to the solenoid coil terminal. It's a simple thing to do, and it lets me know instantly if there is something wrong in that circuit If anyone sees a problem with doing this please let me know. But if anyone thinks it's a good idea...well please let me know as well. :) Keep up the good work Chiefpep. "Bob's your uncle."
Hi Ray. Thank you so much for your compliment and your suggestion. It sounds really interesting. Although I think I have to read your suggestion two more times I think when I consider to this, I think I understand it will be some sort of 'all systems ok' dashboard light but then under the seat. Right?
@@chiefpepdesign Actually, I put a USB charger (fused) connected to the battery and a miniature LCD voltmeter (only about an inch in diameter) on my bikes, They make some especially for motorcycles that have both the USB charger and a voltmeter It tells me the condition of the charging circuit...battery, stator, rectifier, fuses etc. at a glance. They just may keep me from being stranded somewhere I don't want to be with a dead battery. Usually, I install the voltmeter on the left side cover on the top if it's flat there (they come with a rubber flap which keeps the water out.) That's where I sometimes put the starter button too on the left side cover (under the left side cover) on the bottom out of sight. The USB chargers and the voltmeter can be bought on eBay for a song, as can the green or red 12-volt high amp leds.. The best part is if the led ever goes bad it shorts so there will still be current flow when you hit the starter button and I'll know that it's just a bad led cause that is all it could be.. You see the LED in line with starter button circuit can be mounted on the top of left side cover as well. Red or green your choice and it only lights when there is current flow to the solenoid. You can put it all USB and LCD voltmeter and the 12-volt led on a bike for around $15.00 to $20.00. Well worth it.
Cool video as usual...for me that would be the hardest work relating to the rebuild,(editing the video clips)! The only suggestion i have for better, cleaner looking wiring with minimal future trouble, would be: get more heat shrink tubing, and use it instead of tape wherever possible! Heat shrink tubing is relatively inexpensive, comes in any length, many different colors, sizes, thickness, and etc... It helps to keep the connections and wiring more secure, more water and outside environment resistant, and it won't unravel or leave any sticky residue anywhere. (when you think about it...tape really does suck!) Heat shrink tubing is to electrical wiring like a sunny day and winding back roads are for motorcycling! Keep up the great work! Enjoy!
Ron Vail You are completely right. To be honoust I forgot them on the negative 10 gauge wires... I am considering to solder them loose and do them again... And now that you mention it and saw it, I will. I'll give you a shoud out in my next vid when I mention the topic ;)

Hey Pep! At 12:02, you create a ground/negative cable from the battery to the distribution box. But your Distribution is already grounded to the frame. My question for you, does the battery - or distribution box - require a negative/ground wire connection to each other (battery to distribution box)? Or can both the battery and distribution box just have their own grounds to the frame? Asking because my battery and distribution box are far from one another. Thank you in advance for reading and replying.
The ground is very weak on this bike. Since my distribution box spreads all the wires to the bike I make sure in this way the best possible ground is made.

Hi Chief, I love watching your videos a 2nd and 3rd time I often learn more and catch things I’ve missed. Question, will these wiring schematics work for my XV920 with Cycom?
Yes but will have to figure out which wires your meter uses. But, when I install my speedometer, all these wires which I use which go in, all supposed to be in the original meter aswell.
Where did you bought that blue sea "fuse-box"? Cant seem to find the proper one anywhere... Good job on the wiring, makes me itch to do such a quality job on my own build

Can you tell me where, how and which color wires I have to use in the bike to connect the two remote start wires(orange and blue), the pink and the grey ones from the alarm?
Probably there will be a manual with your system. Furthermore you would need the wiring diagram of your bike and look at the color wires which go to keyswitch and starter button. There will be the wires you will need.
Well the bolts is a question I get so often that I took that subject to my most asked question video: th-cam.com/video/i548Yz8FeCs/w-d-xo.html At 14:31 I discuss it with even reference number so you can order the whole set complete. I see you have fixed Airpods filters to carbs, what are the dimensions (size) of it? I am always looking forward for your next episode. Thank you.
Hi Nirjan. No it's not a M-Unit. It's just a distribution bus and fuse box. The distribution bus is very handy since a lot of wires need the same source. And, you need a fuse box anyway so why not combine both. It's from Blue Sea. You can Google it. The gauges vary. I like to use the most thick ones (the thick ones for ground and secondary part of the Solenoid) are 10 Gauge. The next would be 14 and thinest 16. I try to use the same thickness as the original harnas tells me. Otherwise I use the Gauge overview of Dan (aka totallyredvirago) of the Virago forum. You can use that sheet. In most cases you use 14 gauge for positive in to something that needs feed.

The basics are the same in every bike. Only colors could differ. Best is to start to watch and listen carefully to the very first video where I explain this: th-cam.com/video/6eX51fIQc8Y/w-d-xo.html
Hi Charlie. Well for most items on the bike I have separate video's. You can always go through the list. You can find all the details in this video that will probably answer all your questions... th-cam.com/video/k4lh0a4gD3c/w-d-xo.html

Hey mate, keep up the great work! Been watching your videos for a while now and they just keep getting more and more useful so thanks! The fuse block you used - is it the "ST Blade 6 circuit with negative bus?" Cheers.
I kind of do the same in my video's. De the switches don't match the bike. But obiously, they do the same. They let the positive feed through, or they close the feed. That's it. You can put any wire in that gives positive current. So basically what you need to do is for instance, find the headlight positive lead, and connect that to the switch of the light. Then it just needs positive current from the other side. Very best is to just watch this video and really don't skip it and watch it to the end. Take a cup of coffee, or a beer, and just watcht it carefully. You will be so much more confident afterwards th-cam.com/video/m2cGSZlpznc/w-d-xo.html
Hey cheif i've got into a big problem. I have been wiring a 400 cc motorcycle without using any cdi. I don't know where to find an spark from the stator wires. Please help
Is there any possible way where we can use this stator as a motor to help the engine in moving the wheel? I'm thinking if we apply enough reverse voltage we might be able to make a hybrid motorcycle?
@@JH09SUMIT First; those magnets are way to small for enough power, second, we need the stator to generate voltage, third, where are you going to collect your power from?

Thank you for sharing. Your work is extremely tidy and I'm learning. But please consider lowering the volume of your very repetitive music. (and consider finding some music that doesn't sound like short electronic loops). I found myself having to mute large sections and potentially missing your voice over.
I know. Thank you for the comment and that's mentioned a lot. This was made in a period where TH-cam got very strickt on music usage. I had to make a few music tracks myself since there weren't any real channels or platforms to get copyright free music (I am a parttime DJ aswell so I am kind of in the music too). So we TH-camrs were very hard doing our best to figure out ways to at least have some background music. If you see/watch later video's the music under my video's got more diverse and better. I also was learning as a TH-camr by testing and listening to the audience what works and what not. The editing of everything (cam angles, voice over, editing down 6 hours of footage to appr. 15 minutes, music and volume lay-over and after effects) takes about 6 to 7 hours per week. Next to working on the bike itself, a full time job and a family household with two small kids. You sometimes miss out... ;)
Keep up the good work !!
Succes!
Well I'm completely new to it all but getting the hang of it. At the moment I'm just trying to get the bike running so I can get a feel of it. I've managed to get power back but now nothing happens when I hit the ignition switch, I've replaced the starter solenoid but still nothing. The ignition switch is in terrible state but I assumed if I made the connection from the wires themselves i would get some sort of ignition. Anyways I'm still troubleshooting the old loom for now, slow progress...
The M unit is only for the lights and horns... This won't solve anything. The rest is basically my 'part 2 of 2' barebone video. You could try and wire it up like that... If you have the time and patience offcourse. It's always easier said than done.
Well, the starter needs a plus and minus (positive and negative) in order to work. It get's it positive straight from the solenoid, but the negative is from the engine (ground). It's just pressed to the engine with the two long Philiphead bolts (I replaced them for alllans). That ground is not enough. It's very weak. Therefore a lot of starter motors rotate not so strong and fast due to the weak negative/ground. If you give it a strong straight to the starter negative, this is solved. I explain this in the dedicated video on starter motor problems. You should watch it to better understand it.
Just look at my video where I discuss the main components you need to start your engine. It's the video about 'testing your electrical components'. Of you hook these up, which I do and explain in the video's after, all will work.
I am from Holland so I guess it doesn't really make sense to mention the Dutch shops. It's a mix of several shops. These are just sorting boxes from the Home Depot. I use as I mention in the start of the video that these are AMP superseal connectors. The wires I collect from several online shops (mainly Dutch). Most of the time I go to car audio online shops. They have the nicest and broadest choices in my opinion. Also Marine (watersport) shops are very nice to have a look at. For instance the Blue Sea distribution block comes from a Marine shop.
I don't know... It came off the scrapyard... I think it's from a racebike. Like a GSX-R or something. They have those plastic seatcovers with such a system
absurity Well everything between 0.1 and 1.0 Ohms is ok. The lower the better. What you could check is the part where the wires come out of your engine. They often had a horrible life at that point since the sidepanel comes off and on there. The wires get crushed if you don't watch out. It's exactly the spot which I re-taped in my video. If some of those wires are cut, then the resistance goes up...
Makes sense. After I watched this video, I looked at the wires closely and one was very exposed. I tapped it. You're the best! Have you thought about selling stickers, t shirts, and other merchandise? I have bought stickers from all the youtubers that have helped me out with their videos.
It's of a sportsbike. Every sportsbike has such a device in the rear seat to lock rather a) the solo seat cover or b) your passenger seat. You can buy them new on CMSNL or used at any scrapyard.
We call it in Holland (translated) a 'third hand' actually... I think you can buy it the better electronic shop. I don't know. It's a soldering accessory.
Bro can i ask you a question im jake from philipines i have yamaha virago xv 400 the spark not desame electrecity the number 2 have a blue light and the rear have yellow light and it really won't start no matter what i do
jickel dagala I am sorry but it is too hard for me to advice you from such a distance... Could be so much. But it sounds like a bad wire. Check the coil lead first. That could be bad...

Keep the videos coming! I really appreciate all the details!
digging the beats too. thanks for the video
Hey man, your rear sets, did they come as a kit (pegs, linkage, bracket) or did you get them all separately? I’d like to get some for my build!
Hi Charlie. Well for most items on the bike I have separate video's. You can always go through the list. You can find all the details in this video that will probably answer all your questions... th-cam.com/video/k4lh0a4gD3c/w-d-xo.html
Really like the wiring thanks for the vids. It given me the right direction for rewiring my 125 loom as it is awful.
Hi sir I’m a big fun with channel… watching from NY and I have a bike Kawasaki kz650 sr that I’m trying to re-wired using a moto gadget any video from ur channel I could watch… thank you and god bless
I don't like moto gadget. Costs a lot of money and basically does nothing special. You still have to connect the wires (like I do without the gadget).
Thanks brother...
I got it very comfortable 👋
I have a 82 virago 920. It’s a work in progress. I have a 18.9 Ah (20hr) / 310a (CCA) battery. Will that battery work? What would you recommend?
I think so... Best is a Lipo or LiFe Battery...
Hi, can you mention the gauges of the cables you used to rewire the bike? Thanks and greetings from Uruguay!!!
You find that in this video: th-cam.com/video/m2cGSZlpznc/w-d-xo.html @22:00 minutes
Hey mate, keep up the great work! Been watching your videos for a while now and they just keep getting more and more useful so thanks! The fuse block you used - is it the "ST Blade 6 circuit with negative bus?" Cheers.
Thanks a lot! Yes, that's the one! www.bluesea.com/products/5030/ST_Blade_Fuse_Block_-_6_Circuits_with_Negative_Bus
How how do you match the wires when the color codes don't match older bike after market switches
Please help
Sorry but without a CDI you can't do anything...
Is there any possible way where we can use this stator as a motor to help the engine in moving the wheel? I'm thinking if we apply enough reverse voltage we might be able to make a hybrid motorcycle?
I don't think so...
@@chiefpepdesign What might be the reason? If we apply enough voltage.. Won't it work as a motor to rotate the crank?
@@JH09SUMIT First; those magnets are way to small for enough power, second, we need the stator to generate voltage, third, where are you going to collect your power from?
@@chiefpepdesign I was hoping for an extra battery.. I was pretty sure about the small magnets.. This idea just popped in my mind.. I just wanted to talk about it with someone.. Thank you for your reply
Great video!! Thank you for sharing
thank you buddy.... its really great helpful to me.... once again thank you so much.....
hey man by converting on light bike to manully swich off lights, can it cause problems ?
No problem at all! Just ad an on and off switch.
Good video brother, thanks!
You sometimes miss out... ;)
Great video bro👍
Keep up the good work !! Je kunt bijna genieten van je project !
grtzz
Hi Kenneth. Succes!
Can you recommend a good power distribution block? Thanks!
Yes. Blue Sea as I use myself in this video.
@@chiefpepdesign Thanks!
Which gauges wire do you recommend? I would like to have all that I need. So far I have many colors only in 16 gauge.
At the end of the the very first wiring video where I first show the diagrams I mention the gauges per type of wire.
@@chiefpepdesign thank u
What kind of pliers are those? I am trying to figure out what to search for in order to get a good set. Thanks.
It's a ratchet like this: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AMP-TYCO-SUPERSEAL-RATCHET-CRIMPING-TOOL-UNINSULATED-CRIMP-TERMINALS-DELPHI-/253005898324
nice job. informative video. oh have Kawasaki eliminator bn125 and iam about to wire it.
Hey chiefpep, nice video (again). From where did you source all the electrical connectors? online store? thx! keep it up
Fred Janssen from everywhere actually... If you Google 'amp superseal' you'll find loads of shops. In Holland I like to shop at Landreiziger.
you wear the best tshirt! Aprilia lover!
Used to work for Aprilia Benelux ;)
Can I clean eletrical parts as solenoide with WD40? I friend of mine use It to clean even circuit boards.
I guess. But I would rather use contact cleaner www.allekabels.nl/spray/731/1303043/spray-contactspray.html
Great video, but AHHHGGG, that ‘music’ loop drove me mental!
hi chief love your videos, where do you get your slick battery and starter wire from?
Bossdog The battery is a Ballistic Evo 2 12 cell. The wires are from everywhere actually... The thick ground wire is a 10 gauge from a car sound shop.
Do you think getting an M-unit is not worth it then? Better to just rework the wiring and connectors?
Theo If you feel comfortable with wires 'n stuff: FOR SURE!
Ah, thanks a lot for the heads up! M-unit doesn't save that much space then! hehe
hey buddy do you have a video of a oil level sending unit replacement ?
No I'm sorry...
What does grounding your starter do? I’m working on an XV750 myself and was curious because mine has no ground.
Chiefpep awesome thank you so much, your videos are an amazing help.
I like those connectors, where did you get them.
Any automotive electro shop. They are called AMP superseal. Google it and you'll find them.
Goede videos!

Just look at my video where I discuss the main components you need to start your engine. It's the video about 'testing your electrical components'. Of you hook these up, which I do and explain in the video's after, all will work.

Hi I need advise please. I have a 2004 Kawasaki zx10r but I don't get any spark
I am sorry but I am no motorcycle dealer who works on distance so I can't help you in any other way than with my video's.
Hey, great video on wiring! My question is where do you get your colored-wires and wire connectors kit from?
I am from Holland so I guess it doesn't really make sense to mention the Dutch shops. It's a mix of several shops. These are just sorting boxes from the Home Depot. I use as I mention in the start of the video that these are AMP superseal connectors. The wires I collect from several online shops (mainly Dutch). Most of the time I go to car audio online shops. They have the nicest and broadest choices in my opinion. Also Marine (watersport) shops are very nice to have a look at. For instance the Blue Sea distribution block comes from a Marine shop.
Chiefpep Thanks a lot!
Hoi Pep, That was nicely done. Have you got a link for those connectors at all. Groeten, Al. 😉👍
Alan Bell Google AMP Superseal. Loads of shops have them. I like Landreiziger in Holland
Sir good day, what is the function of the "TERMINATION UNIT" on motorcycle
Engine stop switch you mean. Basically it's an emergency switch in case you fall with the bike and you want to shut off the bike immediantly.
It isn't engine stop switch sir. It looks like a type of relay.
@@phmotovlog2273 I have no idea. I got rid of all the relays.
This is like a motorcycle version of IT cable management porn. Very clean and I can't wait to redo my KZ440
That seat release is cool - what bike is that off of?
I don't know... It came off the scrapyard... I think it's from a racebike. Like a GSX-R or something. They have those plastic seatcovers with such a system
My virago stator reads 1 ohms on all the connectors, but the manual says it needs to be 0.5. Does this mean my stator needs to be replaced?
absurity Well everything between 0.1 and 1.0 Ohms is ok.
I have bought stickers from all the youtubers that have helped me out with their videos.
absurity Will consider that. Thanks!
Where’d you get that seat latch? Great video!
It's of a sportsbike. Every sportsbike has such a device in the rear seat to lock rather a) the solo seat cover or b) your passenger seat. You can buy them new on CMSNL or used at any scrapyard.
@@chiefpepdesign thank you!!!!

From the workshop manual obviously!
what is that wire holding tool you use for soldering?? i want one!
We call it in Holland (translated) a 'third hand' actually... I think you can buy it the better electronic shop. I don't know. It's a soldering accessory.
