The gameplay and the story? Absolutely. Graphically outside of cutscenes it looks like ass, lol. It gets a pass because the Playstation was new and developers hadn't figured out how to optimize it yet. FF8 and especially 9 have aged much better because they don't have the awkward polygon blockyness that FF7 did. Nintendo had it more figured out by the time the N64 hit and games like Mario and Zelda aged better than this too.
Who came here after checking the new remake intro? Dang, the old intro still aged well, and the new one add an extra topping to it with more aerith screentime
I am looking forward to The remake...But The intro i am not big fan of in The remake. Whole idea is solitude and isolation, just worked better AS a message.. while remake makes it seem like everyone is an asshole or something. I mean just The whole confused part of being in a alley. Like that just adds to The mystery. But design wise The remake looks OK But i honestly doubt its gonna live up to The ps1 since it was done so well. Unless they can interpret The game so well of what made it Great in 1997 when it came out

I did not like turn based rpgs before this masterpiece. I knew it was special and that I was ALL IN as soon as they panned out over the reactors. 25 years later I still have my working original copy. One of my most prized possessions.
I'm playing the Remake demo and as I'm watching this I'm doing a comparable. And man the Remake has captured everything from the original and made it look like what I've imagined Midgar would really look like when I was just in the 7th grade back in 1997 when this came out
Wait a minute - just noticed if you listen carefully - is that the Sephiroth endgame boss music right at the very start (very faint, under the noise before Aerith's face appears, there's some singing / chanting, but hard to make out)? Pretty much telling us he's in the lifestream - is that what Aerith is doing, listening to the lifestream and hearing Sephiroth contaminating it? Why have I only noticed this now?
0:55 The style of the melody here and the way it builds up reminds me quite of bit of the Star Trek intro. I wonder if they used it as inspiration; I mean FF6’s intro theme was based on 2001: A Space Odyssey, so who knows...
Probably. I had a realization that this game is just one big amalgamation of references from all types of media. There’s hardly a truly original design in this game but sum total is a wholly original thing on its own
Something alot of ppl didn't notice - The final scene in the ending (not including the after credit nanaki scene) is this same scene at 0:45, except Aerith is smiling in the ending.
Hey guys so I tried to make an interpretation of the introduction, mostly just the two first minutes, feel free to tell me what you guys think. Note: I'm gonna call Aeris/th, Aeris, please don't start a debate about this. I describe the first 45 seconds of the intro as the first part of this opening, I believe that it is supposed to represent the cry for help from the suffering planet, whose energy is being extracted from. I say this because this sequence has some kind of horror feel to it because of some the background noises that could be interpreted as screams or pain. To top it of, the screen is black (are the white spots stars or mako energy ?), this allows to set a tragic tone to the game. After this first sequence we move on to another one that starts with the player face to face with Aeris. The camera is slowly moving back, and progressively we start to see mako energy emerging from below her, also the music starts to build up. I interpret this as Aeris listening to that first 45 seconds of the intro, this sequence reveals this whole time we were listening to what Aeris was listening to. When the angle changes we notice that she's looking at what might be a broken piece of machinery leaking mako energy, we then see Aeris pray. This action shows that Aeris willing to help the suffering planet, she answers the cries. This is illustrated by the tone of the music which is synonymous to a ray of light (=hope) opening up in the sky. Aeris is portrayed as a caring person. We then see Aeris walking towards the camera, towards the unknown. Aeris is determined to help the planet and so she faces "the enemy/opponent" which is about to be revealed to us. And sure enough, the entire city of Midgard is revealed to us. As we start to see more and more of her surroundings, the music builds up more and more. The city reveals that there is a tower in the center that seems to be controlling the entire city, it is surrounded my lights and mako energy, this portrays the power, the superiority, and the dominance that this tower has over the city. This scene serves two purpose, reveal who the bad guy is and also show the grand and majestic city of Midgard. And then we get to the section of the intro where the music reaches its peak and "explodes" in a way, it reveals the title of the game and tells us "THIS, this is what our game is going to be about". After this "explosion", the music slowly starts to turn to a "something bad is happening" vibe and while that's happening, the camera zooms into the train arriving at the train station and the music goes full on "urgent, dangerous mission mode" and the game gets the player directly into the action of the game. And that's the end of the analysis. So basically, the planet is suffering and calling for help, Aeris answers the call and pray for the wellbeing of the planet, she then faces the enemy of the planet, responsible for the making the planet suffer, which is the "evil Shinra corporation" (aka. Big tower in center of city exploiting mako energy). Then the game gets us into the midst of action. Please feel free to tell me your interpretation of the intro, or why I'm wrong etc... No matter how old this comment is.
Very nice interpretation! I guess it is very very realistic! I really like the idea of her listening to the cry of the planet!!! Now I want to share with you my "thought/theory" which I know it cannot be true but it's intriguing to me... I always thought that what we see in the intro is actually EXTREMELY important! Everything starts with the STARS, then it turns GREEN and then you see Aerith's face. Then what is she doing right after it? To me she is literally in a PRAYING attitude with the closed eyes and hands closed together... And then what? Where does she go? Exactly in the SAME spot where she will encounter Cloud. Can ALL of this be meaningless? To me these could be clues that Aerith in some way knew from the beginning what was going to happen. And the initial scene could be actually her already praying the Holy material in order to save the planet. That's why the light is green, because it answered (turning green from white original color) and "promised" that at the right moment it would help the Planet to defeat the meteor (coming from the stars ... again the very FIRST thing we see in the opening). Sooooo, IF this was the original meaning, she must have known what was going to happen and realized that the only way to get it done was if 1) if she could meet with Cloud and 2) if Cloud could find himself again and 3) ultimately defeat Sepiroth. So, if everything is like that her death AND her "not so casual" encountering with Could had the meaning to lead him/us to the only way that the Planet had to be saved... Of course if you saw the "opening scene" that should be in the Remake this theory collapses because it seems it was some sort of "Lifestream leakage" or "Mako energy leakage" in the middle of the city... And in this sense YOUR theory is absolutely excellent even if I think that what you see in the beginning are the stars in the universe. But I always thought that this other way of seeing things would make Aerith's character even more powerful, admirable and mysterious.... What do you think? :)
Yes, the noise at the start is very similar to the cries of the planet we hear later in the game. I always thought it was a deliberate contrast to the end of the game were we hear children laughing - the sound of the lifestream changes because we've healed the planet (and Cid specifically describes the planet as a sick / injured child crying out in pain when he hears the noise / after going into space). Also just noticed if you listen very carefully to the very start you can very faintly hear what sounds like the singing from the Sephiroth end boss music - he's infected the lifestream messing it all up, in addition to the Mako reactors draining the lifestream away.
@@Nyla_emotes your idea that Aerith is trying to pray to the planet here is what I always thought - and Remake does still suggest this could be the case (when she's talking about the flowers in her garden and how they can't hear her yet - that something needs to happen first) - maybe here she's trying to pray directly to the Mako in its raw form as would be carried through those pipes, as praying to the flowers hasn't worked - she's trying to get closer to the lifestream so she can be heard by the planet and a pipe leaking Mako energy is as close as she can get without actually joining the lifestream herself (as she eventually realises)?
I remember this game I used to watch my Mum play it all the time and I loved it I was like 4 so I couldnt get further than the second boss but when I found out my Auntie still had one that works I got it and completed it and just loved it. Plus I improved loads since I was 14 (15 now)
I was born in 2000. In 2006, my dad bought the fat PS3 that played PS2 and PS1 games. In 2007, my uncle gave me a PSP and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and I played through it the whole way and was hooked. My uncle told me one day, "Since you really loved that game, you should play the sequel." Me, being a naive seven/eight year old, was mind blown about the fact that the sequel was made in 1997. My uncle gave me his PS1 Greatest Hits copy of Final Fantasy VII and said, "I think you should do play it when your like 16, you will understand the story better, and it will change you view on life like it did mine." And so I did it, I saw at least gameplay of the game on TH-cam, but around 2016 or 2017 would be the year I play it for myself. It is now among my top three favorite games of all time. *(SPOILER ALERT)* Now here I am, waiting for the remake to finish downloading. I know the ending of the game is different, and to be honest, I hated it at first. But then I rewatched the announcement trailer and heard, "The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings." Now here I am, going in with an open mind.
The optimist in me agrees, the realist...:( and that's not nostalgia - I played through 7 again a few months ago. If they were remaking it as is with much better graphics I'd have no doubt. They aren't though, they are remaking it with a "new vision" with the current people at Square Enix....not the same as Squaresoft. Still, I hope it will be amazing. Maybe they'll pull it off, I mean Capcom (another dev in a similiar situation) did with RE2.

Everyone lost their minds when this came out
That Shinra Tower shot is so, so iconic...
finaly a quality vid with music! best game ever thanks for uploading
those were the days ^_^ i missed my family computer, atari, super nes, PS1, PS3 .... now still playing the Remake!
*I played the game first time around 3 years ago, probably on my top 3 games I have ever played.*
Now play FF6 and it'll also be in your top 3!
I did not like turn based rpgs before this masterpiece. I knew it was special and that I was ALL IN as soon as they panned out over the reactors. 25 years later I still have my working original copy. One of my most prized possessions.
happy 25 th birthday to this timeless piece of art
I love this game it's one of the best games ever made! This is a masterpiece. FFVII FTW!!!
Remember first playing this game when I was young😂
Happy Silver Anniversary FF7
I'm playing the Remake demo and as I'm watching this I'm doing a comparable. And man the Remake has captured everything from the original and made it look like what I've imagined Midgar would really look like when I was just in the 7th grade back in 1997 when this came out
Up until 2 years ago I hadn't played this game, but I recently just completed it and thought it was great. The PS1 era was pure gold
never eared before the wispering of sephiroth's theme in the intro before!
Why have I only noticed this now?
will always be my favorite Final Fantasy game
Memories…..what a game.
when i first saw this i thought "wow one day games are gonna look *this* good! i cant wait!" and it blows my mind every time
0:55 The style of the melody here and the way it builds up reminds me quite of bit of the Star Trek intro.
I wonder if they used it as inspiration; I mean FF6’s intro theme was based on 2001: A Space Odyssey, so who knows...
Probably. I had a realization that this game is just one big amalgamation of references from all types of media. There’s hardly a truly original design in this game but sum total is a wholly original thing on its own
@@j.m.3600Every piece of media was inspired by something.
i remember when i played ff7 for first time, it wasnt like any other game i ever played before. sqaure took it to the next level
I will.m ALWAYS love this. As I have for The past 22 years of my life
Something alot of ppl didn't notice - The final scene in the ending (not including the after credit nanaki scene) is this same scene at 0:45, except Aerith is smiling in the ending.
That transition from video to pre-rendered background is sweet, apparently that was quite a difficult thing to do on the PS1.
Plus I improved loads since I was 14 (15 now)
Nostalgia was why old school gaming was epic
I was born in 2000. In 2006, my dad bought the fat PS3 that played PS2 and PS1 games. In 2007, my uncle gave me a PSP and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, and I played through it the whole way and was hooked.
My uncle told me one day, "Since you really loved that game, you should play the sequel." Me, being a naive seven/eight year old, was mind blown about the fact that the sequel was made in 1997. My uncle gave me his PS1 Greatest Hits copy of Final Fantasy VII and said, "I think you should do play it when your like 16, you will understand the story better, and it will change you view on life like it did mine."
And so I did it, I saw at least gameplay of the game on TH-cam, but around 2016 or 2017 would be the year I play it for myself. It is now among my top three favorite games of all time.
*(SPOILER ALERT)*
Now here I am, waiting for the remake to finish downloading. I know the ending of the game is different, and to be honest, I hated it at first. But then I rewatched the announcement trailer and heard, "The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear, but let us embrace whatever it brings." Now here I am, going in with an open mind.
this intro sends a chill down my spine
i loved the battle theme ofc
absolute chills.. back then these graphics were spectacular !
The feels. Now just imagine the hd remake
And the remake intro is beautiful. So beautiful
Thee best RPG to ever run the number one selling Console for its time,Sony's Playstation ,Squaresoft's Final Fantasy VII.Epic Intro will never be forgotten.
My mom got me this game for Christmas the year it came out. I didn't ask for it, but at the same time, I didn't ask NOT for it either. With a little help from a crash course in RPG 101, this became my favorite game of all time.
Watching this intro for the first time gave me chills. I knew I was in for something very special. And when the title pops up my eyes fucking watered
aahhhh the nostalgia
1:25 The realization that this is a reference to the intro for the first Bubblegum Crisis OVA.
Such art in such a game. ❤❤❤❤❤
Chills every time I see this. History!
Back in 2002 I had to have it specially ordered by a Hastings since nobody around me had a copy. It took a MONTH to come in. Longest month ever.
this game wasnt made in 1997. it was made between 1994-96.
I've been so lucky. This is the only Final Fantasy I've ever owned, let alone played, and it's actually one of the best of all the 12 games available today. Hope XIII will blow us away too!
Awesome Final Fantasy VII Intro Video.
Who is here after the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake opening.
Man i think the old one is better then the new one to be fair
This was the game of my childhood.
Man... just so much nostalgia.
Remake 2020 i don't think im too old 😭
I love how at 1:54 the bombing mission theme starts while the intro is ending, then the whole song kicks in. This intro is so good, even by a 15 year old's perspective. This game NEEDS a remake/remaster, idk what happened to the remake, but the graphics didnt age too well
this comment really aged badly
I always remember hoping you’d get to go back and visit Goblins Bar.
great gameplay
