    The opening to this game is all the proof any man needs to see that video games can be art. Square was bound by the limits of the SNES, and they still managed to create an absolutely bone-chilling cinematic.

      Truest shit brother.
      The snow that almost seems to be flowing into the room, the closely approaching lights of Narshe in the distance, and the gorgeous orchestra.
      This marks probably one of the first times games could be taken seriously as a medium for storytelling.

      For whoever visits this video for Nostolgia, I just wanted to share this is actually my very first memory I can recall in my life. My older cousin was over playing this in my room, I was maybe 3 years old or barely 4. The hissing wind of the opening scene and glow of tube television at night woke me up and I gazed at screen mesmerized by the opening music.

      Terra's theme for the opening of FFVI always did bring a tear to my eye. The blowing snow, howling wind, the intensity of the magitech armors' march toward Narshe, all combined to make something epic (like the cusp of adventure) and longingly sad (about the main character).

    • @AionShanks
      @AionShanks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      I think the limitations by which he had to work with, were the prime tools he used to create such good music. Because the less resources you have, the more creative you have to be with said resources to make something truly original, generally. And of course he succeeded with flying colours!

    • @CielBlanche
      @CielBlanche 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@AionShanks yeah, his best work by far was on the snes and playstation 1. if the 'limitations' were an impediment rather than a useful framework and incentive to compose cleverly, you would expect uematsu and others to have reached their peak in the 2000s and later, but that is almost never the case. in fact, it's unfortunately often very much the opposite

      @@colinconsidine5209It was a hard choice but for me Chrono Trigger slightly edges it out though the only baseline I can use is I play CT yearly and always finish it. FF6 I haven't finished since the 90's. Though during the 90's I played FF6 (FF3 US) way more times. I was disappointed in FF7 after finishing when there's really only 3 playthroughs needed to see it all. Loved discovering without handholding how Realm and Shadow are connected and things like that which you have to dig for and so many character combos to see all the dialog.

    This is how to properly do a RPG's story.
    In the first five minutes, we learn:
    The central theme of the plot (The loss and rediscovery of Magic, and the terrible dangers inherent with supernatural power)
    That mankind, having lost magic, has developed technology as a replacement, but runs the same terrible risks of abuse and self-destruction
    That an empire has been been secretly reviving Magic and has built-itself upon the power it grants.
    We meet our first protagonist, Terra, who is capable of using magic naturally, while it is implied that a combination of magic and technology: Magitek, has to be used by everyone else.
    That even magitek-equipped soldiers are scared of her, implying she is more powerful than first appearances would suggest.
    That she is enslaved to the aforementioned empire by magic, unable to act of her own free will.
    And that we have our first McGuffin, a briefly mentioned "demon" or Esper, frozen and hidden in a remote village, which the empire has discovered through spy work, and now seeks to claim for itself.
    If only Square Enix would remember what they did in this game, and not mercilessly drag out the plot of later titles like Final Fantasy XIII.

    • @bartiz12
      @bartiz12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Even more impressively:
      - 0:00 - 1:17 is spent on just a title screen,
      - 3:40 - the end of video is spent on staff credits and opening crawl.
      So most of the info you mentioned is being cleverly and subtly given to us in just ~2,5 minutes.
      The first minute mostly hints a dark atmosphere. The only real piece of information is mechanical dragon looking figure, which from retrospective is a nice way to connect technology and magic (MagiTech). From 3:40 onwards ... it's just visual feast.

      a lot of newer writers, especially japanese ones grew up in the school of light novels and anime, where in medias res and "wow the audience with ambiguity" is the name of the game. if you notice older japanese works and even newer ones that are of an old-school-vein still know how to properly set-up stories. newer ones start with an action sequence, relies on japanese tropes and stereotypes for the audience to pick up on, and then relies on something mysterious like a supposedly important hooded/masked figure to intrigue the audience. it's reliance on stereotypes in place of proper set-up and the complacency that you can always subvert those stereotypes later on if you need "character development."

      Maybe is a late answer, but check the Distant Worlds concerts on spotify or here. They are philharmonic concerts directed by Arnie Roth and supervised directly by Nobuo Uematsu, held all over the world. Look for "terra's theme" or the "Draco and Maria" track. You could cry over it. I was lucky to be able to attend one of those concerts at the Royal Albert Hall and has been one of the best things ever. Is not the same 8bit arrangement, but man, is a philharmonic and is supervised directly by Uematsu himself. Can't get any better than that.

    This game. My favorite Final Fantasy. My favorite game of all time. A masterpiece and yet rarely spoken as such. From the limits of the software they made this opening. They wrote amazing storylines. Thats right plural. in a single game they didn't over do themselves but they did more than enough. Most games now usually follow one character. They had the stones to split away from the MC and actually build a world. Multiple characters. Multiple ways you could play. Sure you had to play them all but the fact they actually had you play every character. It was amazing. It allowed for telling a complete story instead of a small amount. I said it once I will say it again. This is my favorite game of all time.

    They don't make games like anymore... today, its all about which female character wears the least and who has the biggest boobs. FFVI will always be the best in my books. Its something not everyone can understand. This game has no voice over or 3d graphics but the dialog (just text), cutscenes, music and sprites are able to manifest all the colorful and distinct personalities of the characters... I still cherish every bit of this masterpiece. I played it about 6 times during the 90s to get all the hidden outcomes. My fav part especially was Shadow's Nightmare.. Never saw that one coming.. RIP SquareSoft

      You're an idiot if you think that's what games are today. Who gives a fuck what characters wear?? I don't know if you're being shallow or just another feminazi idiot hating on pixels. The problem with gaming today goes MUCH deeper since gaming is no longer seen as an art form or story telling device but as a SERVICE designed as a business model with direct access to your wallet and minimal creative integrity.
      So no I don't give a fuck if a female character is swinging her tits around if that was the creative vision behind the game or the artist's intent. I have an issue with corporations injecting their greed into games and idiots like you injecting politics, both destroying creative freedom to push their respective agendas.

    My sister os 12 years younger than me and she always developed a taste on gaming since a very young age. One day she ordered Final Fantasy XV for the PS4 and I was like "That's cool, but have you played the best of the FF games?". She never heard of VI and it blew my mind. Told her that she just HAD to try it out. A few weeks later she told me it was one of the most magical experiences she ever felt,
