Last week we took on the road with our Land Rover Defender the Albatross on our 5th continent! Australia. A beautiful week of discoveries driving up the West Australia coastline. Unfortunately, after 2 years being on the roads of the world with not much trouble it was our time. A heavy white smoke came out of the exhaust and bonnet... and in just a few seconds we were stopped on the side of the road not going any further.
A hard stop as we were heading north and launching a beautiful Australia lap and mainly a lot of uncertainty. What to do? What are our options? What is the timeline? We were lucky to be still next to a decent size town of Geraldton, but even there things take time to arrive...
We were mainly lucky to get picked up by Julian and Jess who have been the most generous humans through this challenge. To new friends!
By the end of the video we need to make a significant decision...
Thank you for the support week in, week out,
    Until next week, take care!

Wow, with all the negative in the world, it is awesome to see there are really great people out there. My wife and I overland pulling a small teardrop and in the five years of our adventure, I can say that 99% of the people we come across are great. Whether we needed help, or stopped to help someone else, it always restored our faith in humanity. I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2023 and over the five months on the trail, I met great folks. Wishing you all the best and while such a repair can be overwhelming, hang in there. You guys are awesome.

Makes me proud to be an Aussie! What great people. Glad that such a bad situation could showcase such great generosity in a world that needs more of that! Very much looking forward to following the rest of your Australian trip - there is so much to see with extraordinary contrasts and beauty across this amazing land. Hope you organise a meet and greet somewhere near Sydney when you are passing through.

So many blessings! This could have been such a disaster. Your ability to see “the glass half full” as opposed to “half empty” is admirable. Think of all the encouraging happenings: you weren’t in a remote area, Julian stopped by, his family were superb and welcoming hosts, you had a comfortable abode, you found the perfect engine, it was in Australia, a Defender mechanic was close by and available, loads more. That all isn’t a coincidence…God is orchestrating things for you!

Hi Nick & Mathilde, it's an unwanted experience but you'll benefit and also your rescuers. Way back in 1980 me and my wife experienced almost the same when we needed to change the engine of a Ford Transit. We met Georg Atherton at the Salvation Army in Dee Why near Sydney and he replaced the second hand engine at his backyard before we took off to Adelaide Melbourne Canberra and back to Dee Why. We are still keeping in touch with George and Gweneth Atherton and families until today ❤ Good luck Nick & Mathilde 🙏🏼

Be careful who you get a replacement or rebuilt engine from, they may sound great but!
Many engine rebuilders really do cut corners rebuilding engines like the one which you will be removing with the main eye on $$$$ rather than quality, many are pretty much just cleaned externally and given a coat of paint.
I really hope your new engine is Factory fresh and gives you no further problems, good luck

It’s awesome that you had so much help from the right people, I was lucky to have the same north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden.
When the Bedford tour coach I was driving (with passengers) dropped a valve and destroyed one of the pistons.
A local bus/coach company was able to help with a driver and coach to carry the passengers on to Nordkapp and was happy to camp with the group and enjoyed my Tour Manager/Cook cooking along the way.
The local bus company also towed my company’s broken bus into their workshop and they let me use their tools to pull apart the engine and stay in there super sized workshop, accommodation, sauna, and hot tub complex for free.
Also, the bosses wife who was one of the few who could speak fluent English, show me around town, explained different Swedish foods at the supermarket for me to try, asked if I like pizza and then took me to a local pizza parlour that was owned by an English couple saying that they could chat with me and they would look after me too which they did over the coming week.
My company, once I found out what was damaged in the engine, sent out the full-time mechanic with the new coach for me to carry on driving the camping tours around Sweden for the following 6 to 8 weeks and that mechanic rebuilt the engine and drove back to the UK.
By the way I’m an ex motorcycle mechanic and was supposed to be driving Overland trucks through Africa at the time (but I enjoyed Scandinavia so didn’t mind)
Now I look at back at those times when I broke down as Highpoint as the people came out to help and made such good memories and experiences .
I also stopped on the following tour in the same town north of the Arctic Circle meet up with the local bus company owners and along with my tour manager took them out to the local pizza shop and paid everyone a big thank you to them all.
All the best for your coming adventures .

Engine shopping is a nightmare! Try a BMW N47, there are 3 different configuration bases for it, one doesn't swap with the other, they are also a real stupid design and the cam chain doesn't get lubricated so only lasts 70-ish thou miles...
The 300tdi on the other hand, is a lot easier, one engine fits all and the Def just has a bracket for the air filter that can be modded to look right and not need the head bolts removing. I think that's why I loke the older engines as less complicated and less to go wrong. they just work.

I have read through the comments and see that you have got an EGR delete. This is a very bad idea on these engines and very few people that do this really understand what issues it can cause long term.
When the vehicle is running at moderate load at cruising speed, the engine’s computer (ECM) is expecting the EGR to be open and some exhaust gas to be entering the combustion chamber. Because the exhaust gas is now oxygen depleted, the air / egr mix has a lower overall oxygen content than air alone, consequently it combusts with the diesel at a lower temperature.
If you block / blank / delete the EGR, your engine is receiving 100% air, so the combustion is hotter than the engine is designed for, and on long overland cruising for extended periods of time, this gradually causes metal fatigue in the pistons. These engines are not designed to run for long periods of time without EGR reducing combustion temperatures! We have seen a number of vehicles coming to our shop that have had piston failures, including the 2.2 Puma. Sometimes the owner is honest about having blanked the EGR, other times when we have inspected the EGR we can see the witness marks on the bolts telling us that they have just been in there to remove a blanking plate before bringing the vehicle in.
These engines run at high compression, high stress and changing the operating conditions without proper compensation in the fuelling is death to pistons in the long run.
There is an enormous amount of misinformation about EGR delete on the Internet. Be careful with what you choose to believe. You will find plenty about what I’ve just told you, please have a major rethink because you’re just going to go and damage your new engine in the long run. Talk to Ford / Land Rover engineers, most regular mechanics don’t really understand this matter.

Had a similar issue with my 2012 LR4, except it was the transmission. Choice A was get new one, choice B was to crack it open and start looking for the issue. Either way the cost would likely end up being the same, so we had Land Rover send a new one. Expensive, but it got my baby back on the road.

Scrolling my TH-cam feed, hmm that rover on the trailer looks like Albo .. checking the channel .. oh boy
Watching the video and hearing the story it immediately ringed a bell. Last year on the last few days of our journey in Croatia we took a downhill section, we used a lots of engine break to avoid overheating for the breaks as usual.
When I stepped back on throttle, engine started to rattling, running unevenly and white smoke ... crap. On a Friday afternoon of course ...
RV was weak, we took it to the nearest service, they told Monday, maybe they can have a look on Saturday but only a few minutes. Long story short I've sent Family home via FlixBus, waited till Monday. Timing was off by 4 tooth, timing belt was too loose :( Guys were very overloaded and didn't have the time to investigate any deeper that day. Unfortuntately there was engine damage but it was not discovered when I left the RV at the service.
They called few weeks later that only the intake valve clearance adjustment "screw" broke. I guess we were very luck not to be in the same situation like you.
Hope you are already on the road 🤩

Those are the most important things. I had to put a new engine in my car a few years back. Messed up a whole summer for me. Just shows you people can get radically different opinions. These two strike you as privileged trustafarians who use others generosity....and far too duplicitous.Who is stupid enough to donate them money??....why shouldn't they pay themselves?
Keep in mind that these types often write their own comments.....praising them highly.
Of course You Tubes reputation is not what it once was.....their prime concern is political....meaning they delete comments which are not compatible with their own.

I don''t know what it is about you guys, but you have the best luck hooking up with people who help you out. It is simply amazing how nice people are to you. Maybe you both emit good Karma! You also have friendly faces. I found I do too when I was young. People just trusted me. I never let them down. When I was in graduate school, living in a rooming house, I was sitting on the couch watching TV when my future wife and her mother walked in carrying some of her stuff. My future wife later told me her mother said. to her "he looks like a nice boy". So, it helps to have a nice friendly face and two nice friendly faces are a force that cannot be resisted. Take care of them and use them well. They will get you out of many tight situations. As long as you can afford it, it is great that Albo will have a new heart. One big thing you will not have to worry about.

I will contribute, I have had frustrating problems with a financial paying system that lost me much time. Way back in 1979 my brand new wife and I drove from Victoria to Perth on our camping honeymoon, the only time I have had vehicle engine problems although I thought I had the vehicle well serviced. So there you go, it is sometimes the things that go wrong that add to the richness of a memory.

It seems that 2 main reasons could lead to piston break. The main one would be the lack of oil pressure below the piston (one dedicated injector is placed below the piston to cool it down) due to too low rpm. 2000 rpm is a minimum to get the necessary pressure (to be confirmed). The second reason, given by Landrover, is the injector failure. It is considered by lot of people that injectors checks must be bone every 100 000km. I considered this one in second reason because a lot of injector tests were done on cracked piston engines and the injectors were OK. In addition, you had the problem climbing a slope were you request more torque to the engine, leading to fuel/air ratio modification increasing the temperature. If the piston cooling was not suffisent, the piston broke (usualy piston 2 or 3). This is not a perfect science, but i apply these rules with my td4 2.2. Anyway you have been very lucky with an immediat and very kind support. Sometimes shit happens. That's life.

    • @NextMeridianExpedition
