I used to do model trucks and always but the outside of the cab together first and spray/ paint the outside and do the interior separately and put them together. I would get some modelling putty to fill any gaps that don't fit perfectly before painting.
Always worth a go, depends on how the construction goes. I tried that with my old FH kit, but the way they cab and interior went together didn't make it feasible. At least, I couldn't get it go go well...
I am currently building the chimera scania from italeri. I first build the chassis and painted that then i put the painted engine in. It is handy to paint the cab parts when they are not put together and put the decals on after you painted the cab
As a teenager I used to paint the next days parts the night before while they were on the sprues, then touch them up once assembled, they were all cars though :-)
Looking forward to seeing you build the Ovlov Kev. I used to build Airfix /Tamiya models as a kid in the 1960's & 70's. I have always wanted to get back into modelling at some point, but never had my own space to work. My main tips are take your time and always double read the instructions. Hope you and your family stay fit and healthy.
When using the glue, put the parts together first then run a thin line of glue down the join. It acts like a weld in that it very slightly melts the plastic to form the bond. Will need to purchase some superglue for the photo-etched parts.
shed66215 Built loads of these back in the day, I wouldn’t agree with your method, by melting the joints together, with an external line of adhesive, you are creating a visible seam like a weld, this will look terrible on any outward facing surface, surely ?
Mad Muppet The Tamiya Extra Thin Cement doesn't leave any trace, it's that thin it uses a capillary action and leaves no trace on the outside, normal glues would however :)
Ha ha, trying to work from home with a board 7 & 14 year olds lol. That's a huge number of parts. Reminds me of when I built a formula one car when I was in high school in the 80s. I would probably paint the cab before mounting it on the chassis, put the clear coat on last to help keep the decals on. We were lucky to get our respective hairs cut (I have the least amount of hair by a fair margin lol). Good luck with it all
Good luck with the project, look forward to seeing the finished product. Always wanted to build something like that, but never had the courage or time to do it
i use cocktail sticks for aplying the glue, you can get very fine lines of glue with them and bin them after each use . looks an awsome build, i think ive got an xj220 kit somewhere i never built, might have to find it out now lol when cutting parts from the frame double check the shape in the instructions, just to make sure you dont cut in the wong place.
Looking forward to you trying it great office by the way have spare room myself but don’t think the better half would agree to me changing it love the fish tank nice size few fish by the looks good luck mate
You are a very brave man to try this, I will stick to my ETS/ATS sim on the pc. so I will keep on trucking and you keep that glue away from your fingers lol
Great start to the series and so far Kev you haven’t gone on a rant lol but I bet that won’t last long usually when do stuff like this people always go on a rant. Thanks for the content stay safe
Guy I used to work with drove 1 of these, he had the 540hp with the twin clutch, i drove it a fee times, very weird not feeling the gear change, good luck with the build
Hi Kev. Great project for lock down 👍🏻 First thing wash all the parts and make sure their all dry before starting 😀 TH-cam is a great place for tips like the Humbrol channel for doing your decals and shut lines 👍🏻 Good luck and can't wait for the next episode cheers Stevie a DAF XF 105 driver lol 🤣
Hi Kev. I've done a few of these models. I've found it best to clean the plastic with meths... Then when dry, paint the parts, before cutting of the plastic frame. (Also, paint it in your own colours). and best of luck.
Also use micro side cutters for sprue removal of parts and micro files to remove plastic eject marks, as I am building a scania bull nose recovery unit
Seems like a pretty comprehensive kit. I’m jumping the gun a bit however, I’m looking forward to seeing the finished model. Good luck. Guess you’ll need peace and quiet and lots of patience.
Will thats me off to build a spitefire. That will be 3 hanging from my boys celling, by the end of lock down it could end up looking like the Battle of Britain and Kev could have his own fleet 😁.
I see Luck C is busy building Lego Technic Bugatti, me and boy built the Lego technic truck car transporter, you should of got that Kev. Good luck in building that mate, #patience 👍
Takes me back used do Airfix Kits to good standard . Looks like you have got your work cut out with that model. Will watch for updates . Think lockdown will be well over before you get it done.
Used to build quite a lot of them. I always painted before putting it together. Reason was little parts were more easy to reach. I liked to highlight the bolts and stuff on the chassis for instance, and engineparts in differend colours. It's easier to do when not jet assembled. The cab is easier to spraypaint loosely glued together. After painting disassemble and glue the interiourparts to it and put ik all together. And I always chose my own colours for the cab. I think it's boring to make it exactly like on the box... There are also small sets with accesories for sale, like extra lights and other special parts to pimp your ride.
Used to make these models mate, don’t forget to use a scalpel or sharp blade to cut the bits of the “trees” and use glue sparingly. Good luck look forward to seeing the finished item! 👍🏻👏🏻😷
I'm really late to this party and I assume you have finished this by now, I was wondering how you found TET glue on Italeri's plastic? I've recently built their Scania R730 and Merc Actros kits and found on certain parts it would crack/split the plastic, particularly on anything that was hollow tubular...
Hi Kev, I've recently got back I to scale modelling myself, I'm doing the Italeri Volvo F16 at the minute. You'll find a lot of help from the guys on the International Scale Modelling forum, been gents to me getting started, plenty of tips and tricks. I'm looking to do one of my own lorry, but can't seem to find any V3 FHs, only 2's and 4's :( Enjoy the kit fella
I've always somewhat been interested in trucking even though I don't have a drivers license (driving test postponed due to Corona!) but your channel interested me in trucking, I used to play Euro Truck 2 quite a bit, but your videos are entertaining and insightful and nonetheless, I'm excited for this series during the lockdown, thank you (:
Wash all the parts with soap and water, and paint the body before cutting it out of the sprue. I also find it easier to paint fiddly bits while still in the sprue. Decals I put on between paint and lacquer if needed.
Enjoy the build if you've already started. With regards to the interior you may want to assemble some of the exterior/interior as sub-assemblies then paint it before assembly. And the Lacquer, I prefer to apply it after the decals to seal them in. It's preferable to apply decals to a gloss finish which reduces of any film around the decals.
Fair play to you Kev for attempting this and sharing it on TH-cam 👍🏼 I’ve never done one but I’ll see how you get on and then decide should I try one! Off topic - I see you wearing a Huel t-shirt, what do you think of it? I was thinking to buy some before we got locked down!
In your previous video you said about R/C models. There is a German company called ScaleArt and their models can be between £2-14k but the quality is outstanding.
The differant colour marks in the plastic are just where the hot plastic hasnt had enough mixing when hot.just remember to wash all parts to be painted in warm soapy water before painting and light coats work best.put decals on after the clear coat then you should be able to clear over them to seal them in.as you said in the last video about maybe a rc lorry/ truck thats a way more expensive hobby as my wallet has been emptyed by my rc actros many time.
Hi Kev, have you looked at PB Model makers on Facebook yet? They are a friend of mine and he does aircraft models so even more fiddly! I am sure he could give you some pointers if you ask ! Have fun and I look forward to the next stage.

Hi Kev. Not wanting to sound like a know-all... cos I’m not! Definitely assemble cab shell first and spray, after a primer coat. By the time you get to the cab for assembly, paint should’ve hardened sufficiently but have a latex glove on (if you can find one). Avoid fingerprints. Lacquer OVER decals. Better finish. Oh... use a cotton bud to roll over wet decal and get air out. Right, don’t want to sound like I know what I’m talking about.. enough. Have fun and take your time. 🤞 owen East Sussex
Very nice looking kit Kev 👍 going to enjoy watching you build this great looking truck . I have one bit of advice for you . Enjoy yourself and take your time . I also comprise when painting models . If it looks right it probably is !! Oh dont stick your fingers together 😂😂😂 yes I have done it . Seriously mate . I am really going to enjoy this series. All the best and stay safe . Just another quick question. If lockdown ends sooner are you still going to carry on with the truck build ?
Hi Kev, just after a bit of help really started as a class 2 driver on 16th March after doing I.T for 20 years my last job being there 11 years, I’m driving a concrete mixer but problem is that we have had to close temp due to building sites etc closing meaning everyone else has been furloughed but I can’t because I wasn’t on the payroll of the new place on the 28th but I was the old company, my question is is did you start your new job after the 28th and have you been furloughed by the new or old company’s and if it’s the old company do you still have a job with the new one this is where I’m stuck as to whether or not I can be furloughed by the old company whilst I still have my new job but unable to work, Would appreciate it if you would let me know, Thanks Chris
I'm not furloughed per say as my company can't claim as I started after 28th Feb but there paying my salary anyway. Failing that I would of been re-employed by my old employer and he would of furloughed me and then returned to my new employer when they started working again. Hope that helps mate 👍
First thing to do is wash every thing in soapy water to get release agent off or paint will orange peel you dont have to go by the colours they state either. chrome parts sand off the chrome on areas were there glued use super glue to fir small chrome parts and etched parts,Rule one check every thing twice .
if you really want to complicate your life Kev go to a company called KFS (kit form services) they do resin parts for a mid lift axle for the volvo and a right hand dash the modular trailer is worth a look as it's a work of art though deep pockets are required to buy it
Most important thing when building, is set out all the parts, on the floor or something, so you know they are all there, and have them organised, so they are in a way, that you can find them. I do not know if that manual, numbers the parts, but its handy if they do. Thats what i do, not sure about you. We will see how you go about building this.
You have to beat Luke but he's had a good start so he should finish first but I think (know) yours will look better. Get stuck in mate and don't give in. Regards and keep safe (Shep)
That’s gonna look good when it’s finished, just don’t overdo it with the adhesive, it’s a nightmare to remove any excess and can ruin the final look ! Hope it all goes well 👍
I would first put together the chassis and paint it. Try to build the engine separately,to paint it before putting it in. Put the body together and paint it. I am suggesting to build certain parts first and paint it. Afterwards assembly the entire truck.
The dark lines as you called them is marbling of the coloured plastic caused by the way they mould these kits. Don't worry about it as paint covers them completely. Michael Haw not really, kids are annoying. And you really think that having other hobbies like making a model means he’s not spending lots of time with his kid?
Im sure i could not do this Its better if u buy a complete model saves time WHERE as u could be in the garden having a couple of cold one's instead of been stuck indoors

time spent with your 4year old will be more rewarding.
Thank you, we do many activities together everyday and making the most of the time together 👍
Michael Haw not really, kids are annoying. And you really think that having other hobbies like making a model means he’s not spending lots of time with his kid?
Kev, you're just jealous of the Bugatti, LukeC's been building for the last 6 months... roflmao. Hopefully won't be taking you 6 months to build...
😂😂😂
Kev, decals is pronounced: Dee-kals
That's the american pronunciation. In the UK we say dec-le. Say it how you want!
DEE KAL!
You lot aren't helping 😂😂

Its better if u buy a complete model saves time WHERE as u could be in the garden having a couple of cold one's instead of been stuck indoors
