I'm a year behind here - I've built a few trucks now and the Italeri ones were the most enjoyable. They do try your patience and some of the small parts are a pain, but the end result is well worth it.
Kev when using a spray can turn it upside down when you have finished with it and spray it until just air comes out, this stops the paint drying in the nozzle, you then don't waste the spray can. Hope this makes sense.
Hi Kev.. I used to build model trucks all the time when i was younger.. Had loads of them..What i done, was built up the whole chassis with all suspension and steering components in place, then paint the whole lot.. it saved all the hassle of having to scratch off bits of paint, so the glue would adhere the parts to the plastic etc.. same went for the building of the cab.. then scratched off small areas around the window frames, for the glass to be glued in place.. Watching you in your latest vids, is starting to re light my fire and making me want to dig out some old kits ive still got..
From videos that I have watched here on TH-cam about Truck Assembly, the Real ones usually do begin with Chassis Assembly. Although I’m used to seeing you behind the wheel on your channel, I welcome this change you are doing because at least it’s STILL about Trucks, whether Model Replicas or otherwise! Good luck with this project and stay safe, as you probably keep hearing!
Hi Kev what about some string and a few paper clips on the spray booth. Could hand the string through the top and use paper clips to hang the items being sprayed. Enjoying this model build whilst ur off work
Hi Kev, it's better to build sub assemblies and then spray them. This makes sticking everything together much easier. You can go back and pick out the individual items like the filters etc.
Looking good nice detailing too Kev and glad u thinking not to rush it and take ur time .some sections will be quicker than others .A little tip have a look ahead when your going to paint and find any parts that need painting that are the same colour that ur going to paint saves time having to wait for it to dry .as others have said maybe build sections especially if a lot is the same colour and then paint. I have a model paint turntable which has clamps on for holding small parts to paint .
Also a block of polystyrene or oasis (what artificial flowers are stuck in) is useful to stick the kebab sticks in. Kind of thing you get in packaging around new electric goods. This way you can move the freshly painted parts out of the way without touching them .
@@KevTee or cocktail sticks work well. The beauty of it is you can paint parts underneath your lamp then move the whole lot out of the way to dry so you can work on another step. Good luck.
Low-tack masking tape used for decorating, or something like Tamiya tape, which is made for modelling, are good for holding things like chassis together.
Great use of tape to hold the smaller bits Kev, railway modellers use balls of blue tak, or similar, to stand figures in for painting, wire hangers with small crocodile clips screwed to one end, and the other end poked into a box can be used to hold small bits for painting, ebay is your best fiend at this time, thanks for sharing, keep up the good work, keep safe cheeeeers
Hi kev . The adventure begins 👍👍as I modeler I too use plenty of photos for reference and it is a very useful tool to have in your arsenal. I also tend to build bulk assemblies as much as I can . And do as much of the painting whilst on the spruce as well . Cuts down quite a bit of time and more time to build . Again bud enjoying the change for a while . And look forward to the next one 😎
A good tip is to build sub assemblies then spray paint the whole thing as 1 if it will be largely the same colour. You can brush paint the smaller detail items by hand once dried. I build a lot of historical armor kits and usually build 90% of the kit prior to painting. You're doing a great job so far though Kev, looking forward to following your progress.
Don't rush the process of building this - each modeller has their own speed of working, just do what you're comfortable with no body is wanting you to complete this by yesterday. I would say though that a smaller model to build prior to this might have been a bit easier, get you use to the techniques of assembling, painting/detailing etc but still well done for giving it a go
I'm currently building one of these models & I'm finding it very trick as its my first time too, feel like after watching this I've not been quite as good as you have putting it together, hope you can finish this so I can kinda work along with you.
The key is patience, dont just say that will do when putting stuff together as a lot of beginners do because you will find it will come back to bite you later on in the project when things no longer fit because you didnt bother making a piece exactly as it should be. Just take your time getting each piece the way it is meant to be, remember it is not a race to finish, the end goal is to make a nice model no matter how long it takes you to complete.
Hi mate, you're right saying the chassis is grey, if you need a hand with any colours or details give us a shout, I'm a volvo mechanic, you're doing a great job
Just a thought... when you're painting bits. try hanging them from a paperclip or tie a length of thread to them to hang them with. That way, you can paint both sides and leave them hanging while they dry.
Hay Kev, good to see the build is underway. What I use with my models is either the long kebab sticks or cocktail sticks, with a blob of blue tack on the end. It allows for excellent coverage. And you can twiddle the piece being sprayed I to any angle. The thing is, don't try doing to much to quick. I am sure you will be able to get a very acceptable standard. Onwards and upwards bud. 👍
its not a bad result, but as a modeler myselve, i can advise u, if one day u have the chance for a small compressor and a airbrush (i advise infinity airbrush) , its a far better way to controle your spray and once u master it (and it does not take to long) u can start having verry decent results and effects done. just saying. a spray can "spray" is one of the hardest things to controle out there.
You’ve done a great job there so far 👍🏻 plenty of patience is needed doing these lol The clamps you used I know it’s easier said than done what with what’s going on in the world but you can buy small ones that are perfect for holding bits together. You’ll probably find blu-Tack and cocktail sticks will come in handy for the really small parts
Looking good so far, your small detail paint work is neat, better than some of the experienced guys. Watch out for the carpet monster when you remove small parts from the sprue, he eats little parts and they are gone forever.
My God ! We are only on, what, the first week of the lockdown, and Kev's already forgotten if he is a lefter or a righter lol. Keep it up mate, you'll get there in the end.

Remember kev it's a temporary lock down you have retired...... lol get them fingers out son! Looking good I think haha... il check back in 2030 u might have the wheels on. Only joking mate keeping the spirits up all the best !
See if you can find some old copper wire you can poke it through your box bend a hook on it and hang the parts from it you can spin the parts to paint them and no more black fingers
use the helpinh hands to hold itemd your gonna paint or tooth picks with bluetack , then either sticktape or a very small amount of glue (stick on the inside so it dont matter)
These videos actually pushed me to buy one, I was thinking about the Mercedes (which I drive daily) or a scania chimera. Only problem is I don't really wanna paint it, I wish it was already painted (even tho you can paint it however you want)
looks good Kev, remember slow small steps. I think 2 stages for a 30 minute video would be good. I just found the exact same model at our local hobby store, but as I just bought some new video editing software I'd better hold off for a bit
For what it's worth, my advice would be not to cut things off of the sprue until you need them. Not only do you not get numbers mixed up, but it also means you have less chance of losing the pieces...been there, done that! Build is looking good so far.
Get some wooden kebab sticks and blue tac...stick the pointed end in a hole in the part you're painting or glueing and the other end in blue tac stuck to your bench (hope that makes sense) then you have both hands free.
Kev think about chassis build, do they weld painted surface to painted surface or do they build the chassis then powder coat or paint the assembled chassis?
Shaking that paint was not a good look Kev mate, lol 😂 just as a hint you could try wire hangers from you garage door, like hooks, saves getting paint all over your hands buddy, cheers mate good luck with the rest of the build. Truck on. 👍🏻👏🏻

I used to paint the larger parts before I would cut them out from the kit, so I wouldn't get paint on my hands and also had something to hold onto as i painted. All I had to do then was paint where I cut the parts out from the kit.
Good work Kev, looking forward to progress😀 But please can you turn your MONSTER flag round the right way, its getting the better of my OCD!! Cheeeeeeeers!

Small bits yeah but for big peices it is better to paint them after everything has been glued to them as polystyrene cement doesn't 'play well' with painted surfaces. You may actually need superglue rather than 'cement' if items are painted. Basically I would have built the chassis, sprayed (never used rattle cans on static kits so would have used an airbrush it) then superglued on the 'wee bits' (oil filter, air block etc) which I had previously hand painted.
On line research is pretty much de-rigeur for the 'pros' . Do NOT cut so close on circular (or rather curved) objects as you will flatten out that bit, instead cut close but not so as to remove all traces of sprue, 'rub' away with file and sandpaper any remaining peices of 'gate'. Gloves would be a V good idea not so much to protect your hands but to stop 'skin grease' getting on your model
During this lockdown, I've built a couple of Lego Technic models, if you start getting annoyed(I did) leave it alone and come back to it the next day. There's no hurry after all.
Be careful when using a knife, especially with a new blade, to clean up the parts. A slight slip and you can do some serious damage. Better to use the files and smoothing boards.
