They Won't Do Surgery Because I'm "Too Young"

  • I am at my wits end with these doctors who, truly, do not care about my quality of life. To tell a patient they are "too young" or a procedure is "too life-changing" as a basis for denial of surgery is downright negligent. I promise you, I have done every single thing they have told me to do to avoid an ostomy and shockingly it has not cured me. They treat you like you are an idiot or are malingering when, really, all we want is to live normally more than anything. Sadly, having a mental health history and also being diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos labels you a nuisance to the medical system. There needs to be serious change within the medical system because this is beyond disgusting, and it is not abnormal. In fact, the longer I live on this earth in a disabled body the more I see it is the caring doctors that are the anomaly. I hate for this all to come across as pessimistic, but you become that way when disabled and have your life in the hands of doctors who do not care about you.

😡😡 u.s medicine is a scam! Your video threw me back to the horrible dental procedures ive lived thru, always bouncing between the doc offices and feeling harmed. Ive only met one skilled AND caring doc in my 27 years of life. Thanks for sharing Autumn 🙏🏽 Im rooting for you!

Gastroenterologists are the absolute worst. Before I got diagnosed with chiari i was throwing up dozens of times a day and unable to eat or drink anything. Got down to 84lbs, bed bound, needing a wheelchair and half dead. My family doctor broke the news that my heart would likely stop if we didn’t figure something out and told me I’d need a feeding tube to at least keep me alive until we figured out the root cause. Got to the gastroenterologist and he promptly said, and I quote, “i’m not putting a feeding tube in you, there’s nothing wrong with you”. Thankfully my partner at the time had enough sense to advocate for me but man, I remember that just crushed me. Hang in there girl❤️

The shocking thing is every other gastroenterology professional has agreed I need surgery and has been quite empathetic. Hell, he even agreed during our in-person appointment I needed the surgery! Now he suddenly changes his tune when this finding comes up, a finding that is a SYMPTOM of the problem at hand and could in no way be the cause. I remember you expressing to me your past struggles with this field and, God, I just cannot believe there seems to be no field of medicine not touched by ignorance.

I am praying he calls me during a time I can record the call so I can have on record the BS he is trying to pull. Of course they wont put it in writing as then they would be liable

I am lucky I have a gastroenterologist here in NJ who has been treating me since 17 who can recommend someone else. I wanted to go to Weill Cornell for this surgery because that's where all my specialists are, but it seems the entire hospital has gone downhill and I may in the long run be better off pursuing someone else.
