This adapter allows you to connect a DSLR camera to a microscope. It is relatively cheap. The adapter gave mixed results. I was not satisfied with the image quality on my stereo microscope, but the images produced with my compound microscope were fine.

I too have used one of these adapters (through the eyepiece) for some time, having made the mistake if not buying a Trinocular microscope in the first place. The results have been variable but generally good when stacking images manually.
I would guess that the Olympus adapter you have is of much better optical quality than the reviewed adapter, especially when used on an Olympus microscope.
My first microscope had a 'built-in' 3 mp digital camera which gave very poor results. This led me to using an adapter similar to the one in your review.
I now have a Trinocular microscope and using my DSLR on it has been easier but not parfocal. I have also tried a 'Hi End' dedicated 18 mp digital microscope camera. The results from this, given its cost, were far from acceptable and It was returned.
The microscope industry is very good at offering a wide range of expensive products, but unless you actually live near one of the few showrooms in the UK where you can actually try the products out, you are nearly always buying sight unseen.
It would be great if you could review a 'dedicated' microscope camera that you are confident actually produces good results.

Some manufacturers, notably Zeiss and the Russian company, Lomo, design their objectives such that full correction of aberrations requires a matching eyepiece from their company. That is to say that the objective only partially corrects image aberrations and their branded eyepieces finish correcting the image. For those systems, it is better to obtain a camera adapter that fits over the phototube, which allows you to slip in their eyepiece to provide a fully corrected image. Some brands like Nikon tend to design in full correction into the objective so that you don't necessarily need one of their eyepieces. I'm not sure about the requirements for Olympus. I've managed to get my photo adapters to be reasonably parfocal though it took some adjusting.

I purchased one of these adapters from Amscope (Nikon T2 ring mount) about 10 months ago and it performs far better than expected. I only use it on the Olympus CX41 eyepiece TUBE with Nikon D7000 and White Balance set to 3450K. I have experimented with all of my infinity corrected objectives 4x, 10x, 20x, 40x, and 60x with long shutter exposures between 1/50th down to 0.77 seconds. All of the images are reasonably crisp with even color and very minimal chromatic aberration with this 2x relay lens. I would prefer an optical magnification of 1.50x to 1.70x to capture more of specimen field-of-view.
It appears that Oliver's 2x adapter has a slightly longer "nose" tube (up to 5 mm longer ?? ). This will move the "front lens" element of the adapter closer to the microscope prism surface. The Amscope 2x adapter "nose tube" is 21.4 mm long on my version of NDPL-1 (2x). Also, the T2 ring threads on to adapter body very snug as you would expect for a nice, precision, mechanical coupling.
So, for me, this eyepiece adapter is VERY important as I do not have Olympus trinocular head.
I would recommend that Oliver send back his adapter for refund and then purchase a unit from Amscope to conduct another review (about $102 USD + shipping).
One last point: I use remote camera shutter triggering to prevent ANY camera mirror/shutter vibrations. This method improved the definition and sharpness of images.

Thanks for the info on this. My eyepiece tube is NOT deep enough to accept your NDPL-1 adapter (Olympus head U-CBI30-2 ) on the CX41 scope. It would definitely crash into the edge surface of prism glass !
So, use extreme caution "if and when" you use this device on your Olympus biology microscopes. Verify that the prisms are deep enough on the BH2
and CH40 eyepiece tubes. Thank You.

I bought the Canon adapter from Amscope as well. Seems really dark to me. I can up my camera ISO (60D) but I don't like to go above 1600 ISO if I can help it. This usually happens when I implement the 40x or especially the 100x objectives.
@@hausofwheat The 60D is a great camera. You do not need to use high ISO settings. That's bad for brightfield microscopy. Crank down the shutter speed to 1/10th, 1/8th, 1/4, etc.
to check the general illumination of specimen as viewed on the 60D. Once you have optimized the exposure to your satisfaction, you can then deal with "camera shake" if any
is detectable. What brand & model microscope are you using ? What is the wattage of lamp ? If you cannot get enough light thru the specimen because light source is limited,
you will have to open the condenser iris more-and-more until images improve (for 40x, 60x, 100x objectives). I recommend that you stay with low power magnification (4x objective) to dial-in all the exposure settings of camera & microscope. Then move on to 10x objective and so on. Hope this helps a little.
Hi Oliver; thanx much for another very informative video. I have the same device that you demonstrated but purchased from Amscope; appears to be the very same adapter; likely is from the same Chinese Manufacture; just branded by Amscope. Initialy, on an Amscope SM-T2 zoom stereo scope with photo tube, I had the same slightly blurred image that you experienced. The photo tube on this scope is adjustable so I adjusted the image on the camera screen to be in focus same thru the eye piece, par focaled; problem solved. I have also used this adapter on other scopes and it works very well; I am very pleased with this adapter; and its minimal size. Thanx a bunch for your web site and informative videos!!!!...
@@Exciting__Electronics You cannot use auto focus with this adapter. Everything has to be done manually. I have yet to figure it out, using a Canon 70D and the images are crap.
In case you can disassembly the optics inside the adapter - black edding pen the outside ring part of the glass to avoid reflection...
Im wondering if the optic issue is related to the backfocus of the adaptor. Your Olympus adapter is longer which may help you achieve the proper backfocus at low magnifications. Great video! Thank you for sharing!!
Thanks for the info. I have an old microscope and have always wanted to attache my canon camera to it and just needed to know how to do it and what I would need to do it. I have an old vickers MIOa The latter I have no idea what it means as it did not come with instructions as I picked it up for £20 in a charity shop years ago. It shows good image's just looking through the eye piece so always fancied taking some photo's of my images.

I got an adapter that looks exactly like this from amazon. But its for 4/3 cameras. The image quality is pretty good but it does downgrade the quality a little. Its disappointing but I dont think there are any other 4/3 camera adapters out there and you seem to be having similar issues with image quality using your adapter. I wonder if there are any adapters like these that dont downgrade quality at all.
Hi Oliver, is auto focus needed when doing microscope photography with a DSLR or is manual better?
Would love to see you try the adapter without the optics. I started trying different things (after watching your channel 👍 In a true noob) and I was quite pleased with the image for not much money. I think I had to adjust the height to get focus at different magnifications. On that note, did you try that with your latest adapter and your stereo microscope?
Hi! I have the adapter without the optics. There are several things of importance here: 1. It's not parfocal as explained in the video 2. It does not work well with lower magnification (4x works, but only just). 3. It's even unsharper in the corners. Hope that helps 😊

Thanks Oliver. I had a similar but opposite experience, with my stereo (B&L SZ7) microscope having a good result but some artifacts with my compound (AO) microscope. Also, I've seen some widely ranging prices for this online. Overall, as you say, a pretty good.easy solution to test.

Difficult. You might want to try an adapter without optics. There are some low-cost solutions. Or try a dedicated microscope camera, or try to connect a pocket camera using an adapter to an eyepiece. Pocket cams allow you to zoom so that you do not see the black border.

Besides the DSLR adapter, you need a T2 ring for canon mirrorless.

Hi Oliver. Do the newer 3.0 dedicated cameras work well enough for video or are they also deficient like the older 2.0 USB cameras?
Also, would shutterless cameras work well for photomicrography? Certainly they would not shake and move like SLR’s do when snapping pictures.
USB 3 should work, but some computers are slow and can not process it fast enough. I see no reason why mirrorless cameras should not work as well. Vibration is certainly lower. I lock up the mirror on my DSLR to reduce vibration.
I used a NDPL adapter for take photos with my DSLR Nikon D3200 Cámera throught the eyepiece of my stereo microscope. The results were disappointing. The photos are aceptable when the object is flat and don´t have high contrast colors like a green tree leaf, but the photos was terrible when the object have high contrast colors like a black insect with a wite background, the photo is dark and complete neutral gray because all the functions of the camera were blocked and i can´t utilize the light measurement option for correct the tones, that is for the black to be black and the wite to be wite, the resolution isnt the expected for a DSLR camera with a big size sensor. Finally i opted for use my old and small AMSCOPE 3.1 MP dedicated microscope camera for take photos, have a little better resolution and the brightness is better. I dont know why happened this, maybe i dont know how set up correctly my DSLR camera, maybe because the optics of the NDPL is poor, maybe because my stereoscope dont have phototube, i dont know..... I hope to solve the mistery one day, maybe with your help. Thank You.

Have I seen anywhere on this or your other channel you, demonstrating a SwiftCam, but mentioned it only shortly? What are your experiences with that one? There is not much material to find, that demonstrates them.
While I do not own the Swiftcam itself, I do have similar microscope cameras. The advantage is that it is very convenient and practical, just put into the microscope instead of an eyepiece. The disadvantages are that HD video is not possible (unless it is USB 3) and that you always need a computer turned on. Due to the small sensor size, the dyanic range is also not as high, but generally these cameras produced a good result, especially if you want to do microscopy on a screen with a live image. I think that anything more than about 3 Megapixels is more than needed.
The adaptor to attach to the microscope, is that a universal kind of fitting? Or is it very specific to the microscope you bought?
It is (mostly) universal. If you have eyepieces with a diameter of 23mm, then it can be put in place instead of an eyepiece. Some very expensive microscopes use different standards.

I wonder if there have DSLR adapter without removing eyepiece because I could not find one except mobile adapters. What will be differences between DSLR adapter with or without eyepieces (especially for magnification and quality)?
DSLR adapters come wither with optics (not eyepieces) or without. The one with optics will produce an image when there is also an image in the eyepieces (no refocusing necessary).

I use a similar adapter. It is an amscope brand. It cost me 100 US dollar bia amazon. More expensive but I didn't wait for two months. It does the job well.
Are you using it on a stereo or compound scope? I'm looking at the amscope adapter but worried with some reviews about negative quality photos
@@djsyndicate0001 I use stereo microscope. The adapter is ok. You can lock it on your camera but on the microscope the gravity keeps things together. You cannot fix the adapter in one position. It turns in the eye piece. It is a good thing and a bad thing. It is good because you can turn the camera if you are filming. It is bad because you cannot fix the camera in one position. Adapter is durable available for both Nikon and cannon.

does the T2 adapter work for any DSLR? Or do I have to buy one specific to my camera?
The adapter is made up of a few pieces. The ring that mounts to the camera is what you have to order brand specific.
The issue with this adaptor is that it is not suitable for full frame DSLR cameras. The big one probably was compatible with full frame.
I bought this microscope-dslr adapter www.amazon.com/Gosky-Camera-Adapter-Microscope-Eyepiece/dp/B018HJOTU2 few years ago. Used it with my binocular microscope. But there is a huge annoying halo of light in the field of view. This halo remains irrespective of whether i use the artificial lamp or the reflective mirror as light source. And there are no lens systems in the adapter; just a piece of metal. I haven't tried it out with an ordinary student microscope like the one show in the product photos of the above amazon link though. Could this halo be because of the lens system in my binocular microscope, or my dslr camera? Or just a faulty, poorly designed adapter? please help
I think that it could be due to the reflection of light from the inside of the tube. The light strikes the edges and then reflects onto the sensor. Try the following: remove the camera, turn on the microscope light and look into the phototube. If you see reflections of light at the side of the tube, then this might cause the problem. Even if the tube is painted black inside, it is still smooth and shiny and can reflect light. Köhler Illumination (compound microscope) would help here. Or you can try to put black rough paper into the tube to minimize reflection - should this be the case.
Probably a dumb question, but I'm guessing you don't need your normal camera lens since the microscope lens will be being used.
When connecting a DSLR, then this is correct. The adapter optics and microscope objective take care of this. You can also put a pocket camera/mobile phone in front of the eyepiece (called afocal photography) and then you do need the camera lens. So there are different ways.
you should put your dslr on M (manual focus), instead of A (auto). also, to fix your focus, if you have video mode try it this way first. .
That would be true if there was a focusable lens that was controlled by the camera. These adapters are fixed focus.
why do we have adapters without lens (14$ price) in the shopping list? what is the catch?
It is possible to have DSLR Adapters without lens. The objective directly projects the image into the camera. The catch is that the image might not fill the whole sensor (circle) and that you need to do some refocusing. The advantage is the low cost. I generally would recommend the one with the lens.
@@MicrobehunterMicroscopy In the course of collecting cameras and lenses for the Olympus Pen F system (half frame film cameras from the 1960's) I recently acquired a microscope adapter for the scientific Pen F. I own one of these special purpose cameras but it does not have a focus screen as such, just a cross hairs on a bright field. I would like to try out this camera as well as my Pen F digital (mirrrorless) camera, for which I have adapters to the film camera lenses. The microscope adapter has no optics inside the tube, but since it is half frame format, perhaps they are not needed. The adapter is about 8 cm from the camera mounting flange to the bottom of the microscope mounting collar, which has an inside diameter of about 2.4 cm.The Pen F digital is a micro 4/3 camera, which has an even smaller than half frame sensor.
Perhaps the film camera was designed to be parfocal with the Olympus microscopes; and certainly I can use the camera view screen for focusing when the digital camera is mounted. I was thinking a microscope such as the Swift SW 350t or SW 380t if the camera to microscope adapter would fit.
Your advice would be appreciated.

Will it work with a mirrorless canon camera?
You need a special T2 adapter ring for canon mirrorless cameras. The T2 ring will be thicker (because the sensor is further forward), but otherwise it should work. Check first if you can find a T2 adapter ring for your canon mirrorless camera.
It is very strange that it didn't work so well with your stereo scope.
I think that it might be due to some stray light. But I am not sure. Still trying to find out.
@@MicrobehunterMicroscopy That does make sense. Perhaps concentrated light on the specimen would give better results. A lens hood of sorts over your light source may help.
I have my canon m50, so what dslr or adapter should I use?
the M50 is mirrorless so you first have to find a T2 adapter ring. and then you can try to connect an adapter like the one in the video.

I have the exact same problem. Bought the scope from AmScope with the AmScope/DSLR adapter. You cant see a damn thing. Why do they even sell this piece of junk?

Why no one talks about phototubes with C mount. There are so many Leica microscopes with that, just Leica sells an adapter that cost an arm and a leg and only for Leica. I haven't seen a C-Mount to DSLR, There is a fotodiox C-mount to Cannon and has horrible reviews.
