The "Dark Fjord" concept was answering a question of how he would have been different if he'd never met Caduceus. How he never would have realized his pact with Uk'otoa wasn't his only option and how he would have probably embraced things. Taking Cad out of the picture would be a pretty massive change to the story for an answer to a 'what if' fan question.

I think people are taking far too big a stretch when looking at Critical Role using the Daggerheart system in Exandria and thinking that all the mechanical differences and origin options mean that the world is changing. It probably will after C3 but not like it needs to change to a "daggerheart world" as apposed to a "D&D world".
Yeah, I'm not sure they built the system to do that. It feels like a very different vibe from what they like about d&d. It's fun in a way they _also_ like, but much like Candela, it feels like it's for a slightly different style of play, than roving around Matt's very deep and intricate setting facing world spanning plots. @@Lurklen I agree that it wasn't built to replace D&D exactly. I do however think Matt's games are more collaborative that one might think. Plus Matt has now extended to having teams helping design places with different cultures and such (I know that's different but still collaborative). Getting back to it I guess my point was that people think that the rules of the game have to impact the fictional setting like its the underlying physics of the world. Also all the races that aren't D&D options may exist in Exandria, we just haven't explicitly seen them yet. Running a game using the Daggerheart rules in Exandria just means that the game is run different for that campaign or one shot in this case. It might not be easy to accomplish within the rule system, especially if you want to portray the same types of characters as seen in a D&D game for some systems, but it is possible. If you cast fireball and it does 8d6 fire damage or if it has a difficult of 4 dice and you need to roll your skill and add up a bunch of symbols, those are both just mechanical systems to represent the same idea. Sure there are other things which aren't so easily equated but the same point stands.
@@TheProteanGeek No I agree. I think the system is just geared towards a different style of storytelling than they seem to like for their bit sweeping storyline games. In the most recent episode of Campaign 3 (or maybe it was Critical Cooldown?) they made some reference/joke about how Robbie wasn't technically on the payroll of Critical Role, implying that he's basically just a longterm guest. I'm concerned by this desire to change the stories in the shows. I understand some changes are necessary to keep the narrative tight. But this sounds like changing the story just because and this seldomly goes well with adaptions
This is what worried me the most. Changing to much can only hurt the story. Some changes make sense, but this last one (you all know what I'm talking about) has me on edge that they're going in a different direction. It causes problems down the line with other characters, children, the city, etc etc. But my prediction is the final episode might rectify it with them discovering a scroll to circumvent it.
Regarding the DM screen, not what I envisioned, but I don't own it yet so I want to reserve judgment. It's not bad art by any stretch and the artist behind it deserves the chance to have a moment in the sun without the peanut gallery going out of its way to bruise his/her ego on what is a job well done. Regardless, D&D has produced multiple DM screens during the 5th edition. No doubt there will be more, and amongst those will be artstyle that will cater to others better. Also, nothing prevents people from using the screens they already know and love.
I like the art on the DM screen, but I don't know if I like it for a DM screen. I think I would like the art on the DM screen to be less detailed. I'm not happy about them putting the most important information from the DM screen on the side. I use a laptop when running the game, but I have it on the right side of the screen, so if I used the new DM screen, my laptop would cover the most referenced tables on the DM screen.
We agree, but we post it as such because some fans may have missed the inferences and hate having stuff like that spoiled without warning. Better safe than sorry in our minds!
Another posibility is that the campaing 4 would be with D&D 5.5 in Exandria and the Daggerheart campaing would be like Candela Obscura but in Exandria too with more space between episodes.
I think that DM screen is gorgeous. Very nice art, showing a bunch of different and cool characters. I like it better than just...a dragon. I love dragons, but y'know I've seen a lot of them. This looks nice, and as something players are going to be staring at for months or years at a time, having a bunch of interesting different characters on there seems like a good idea. Hell, I can imagine seeding those characters through my adventures and seeing if the players notice. The inside stuff is fine, but long ago I started putting my own content inside those things.
While it's POSSIBLE C4 could be Daggerheart and Exandria, we don't know that for sure. Back when the live show for December was first announced it was stated it would be in an all new world setting. This, to me, points more towards the setting that would be used for a Daggerheart campaign setting more than it doesn't. Using the setting of Exandria would take little to no conversion to work with Daggeheart. I'm sure using the setting without converting anything could very easily be done for a 4 hour one shot live show (especially if it's, say, set 250 years in the future after another calamity which explains the magic change and new ancestries). But, yes, it's possible this could also point towards an Exandria setting book releasing for Daggerheart. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if one were already being converted unannounced and then *BAM* during the August live show they say it's out or announce pre-orders for it. But I'm really not sure. While, yes, a ton of work has been done for Exandria, I don't really know if they'd want to convert it for using with Daggerheart. Sure, that'd be an easy ton of sales of said setting book, so it makes marketing sense, but there would still be a very strong lasting connection to D&D (even though it originally started in Pathfinder) that I don't know they'd want to carry over. So many of the DH principals seem to be an attempt to set them apart as both different and moving forward with the times. With Daggerheart they have a chance for a 'clean start' with no attachments, expectations, or connections to other systems. If they use Exandria in more than the one shot, that's gone. People are always going to be looking back to the D&D content origin, even if they do make a DH setting book. That connection and association will be very hard to break. I'm honestly torn on feelings about it. (And I've been watching ever since Ep 1, and even before that since I was watching G&S's other shows prior to that.)
If you've been watching that long, what makes you think they aren't going to cut themselves completely free of wizards of the Hasbro the same way that they did legendary? I wouldn't be surprised or blame them, in fact I would be very surprised if they didn't decide to do that and set the wheels in motion back when all the OGL fiasco was happening.
@@fuzziestlumpkin Honestly I'm surprised they haven't come out with their own system sooner. The reason I don't think they are completely abandoning D&D is because it's come up in like 3 different interviews I know of, and every time while the person hasn't directly said they aren't, they say they will be playing 'many different systems'. (Interviews were with, if I recall, Marisha, Matt, and now the newest with Travis (which I don't have access to watch, but have heard reports on.) If they were 100% separating from D&D why would they be vague about it?
the whole Robbie part isnt really news. I think i was Mercer himself that was ask in an interview or something about him joining as an permant memeber and he said no
I was kind of confused why they would give away spoilers with the fate of Exandria being such an up in the air thing right now. Why not just wait until the campaign is over? It's almost done.
@@TheCharacterSheet they do not record that far ahead. The most they record ahead is 3 eps. Most of the time they still have 1 weekly recording like a day or 2 before airdate. There looks to be about 10 episodes to go at least. Also Laura made it clear yesterday that they had not recorded the MN part of the plans as yet.
They did a DND campaign, comics, and now a TV show. What to be next in the future? Would it be a video game that opens the world in that world or a live-action movie on campaign one?
I am not a fan of changing the story. Sure, more backstory, and comprehensive storytelling. The path to those moments can be changed for animated format, but the ultimate result should be the same as the table game. (still coping after last batch of episodes of Vox Machina)
Yeah, and off genre campaign would be really interesting. They may have to make it a seperate group though as we imagine most critters are here for fantasy based stuff!
Fair, art is very subjective, and while we actually like the new DM screen, we do understand that it doesn't match super well with the existing art styles!
I personally don't think Exandria and Daggerheart will be separate thing. Critical Role can perfectly change the system from D&D to Daggerheart and continue their campaign. Worlds change, that's all.
I do not like the art on the new DM screen. I have consitently loved D&D art, but this new style is a departure from the quality that has been a part of the D&D universe.
I dont think the Jester and Fjord wedding does not mean an apocalypse cant happen. The Calamity lasted for around 150 years. I am sure that during those 150 years wedings happened.
My 2 cents- deep fakes on cartoon although I am curious how they will undo it they are not running d&d in non exandria for campaign 4. I can’t see Matt running grey hawk etc. it’s daggerheart in future exandria and it’s a big gamble!
You could very well be right! We think he might create a NEW world for D&D adventures if they do go that route, but yes, he is definitely not just using an existing setting!
It totally make sense for CR to play DaggerHeart in the main campaign from a business perspective, but I think it's going to be a mistake. I'm sure they will lose viewership by dropping DnD, especially among the casual viewers. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if they are currently negotiating with WOTC to get paid to play DnD in campaign 4.
Its a shame. As someone who has roleplayed for 40+ years, Daggerheart just isn't that good of a system. its ok and fun for one offs and short stints, but by no means lends itself to a long term campaign. The variety of things you can do with spells etc just isn't there.
I think there should be ZERO blank space or art on the INSIDE of the DM screen. More reference! I don't love the outside art, it's OK. But 20 bucks would be waste, IMO
Hope the changes to M9 animations are just added context .... I want to see an adaptiation of the Campaign, not a reinterpretation. I can understand the intention Travis said "they want to keep fans of the streamed campaign on their toes too" ... WELL thanks but NO. I dont want to watch a spin-off of the campaign, I want THE campaign (with as little changes as necessary, I know the change in media requires some). I want all of the important story beats kept as-is. Dark Fjord ? could be cools to see, but it should be left to a "What if .. ? " kind of spin-off once the whole M9 campaign has been adapted.
We are pretty sure they will still have a D&D campaign, it just may be either every other week with a daggerheart campaign taking the other weeks, or possibly a monthly campaign
@@TheCharacterSheet Just curious, any evidence to support this? Personally, not a Daggerheart fan, but I've been watching since the Briarwood arc aired.
It makes zero sense to release a fantasy tabletop rpg system and then continue to use and promote a different one that you don’t own. They obviously need to switch to daggerheart and in between campaigns is the exact time to do it. Critical role outgrew geek and sundry and moved on, why would they not do the same with dnd?
@@popinjayishuman I agree with you. All signs point to Daggerheart. I’m just of the opinion that 5E is a superior system. Don’t enjoy watching Daggerheart content.
Yeahhh I don't like the departure from the story of C1 in tlovm. We backed the crowd funding because we wanted to see THIS EXACT STORY animated, but instead we're getting an alternate universe version with a different plot and possibly a different outcome? Yikes. Not what I paid for. I'm concerned that this will ruin my love for C1 but I trust (for now) that they have enough love and skills to make this work.
i really miss the airbrushed iconic fantasy art style of the 90s by people like elmore, easley, brom, etc. all the art these days is too cartoonish, overdressed, lacks curves, and is easily forgotten... 😮💨
What a terrible clickbait title, the "controversy" boils down to "some people were hoping for different art". This bad-faith journalism is what prevents honest content creators from making real money.
….. the game will stay in Exandria And they will use the Daggerheart system There is a reason Mercer is currently killing the gods, because that’s the last part that belongs to WOTC Which is also the reason why C3 doesn’t have the same pull as C2 and nowhere near the pull of C1. The ending is already obvious
That screen is a huge fail. Low contrast, tons of wasted space, and artwork for 5 year olds that appears to pit adventurers against each other. It will be visible during every second of play and sets a tone in contract to most DnD themes and content as well. Worried about the MM
Is anyone REALLY thinking them announcing a Jester-Fjord wedding oneshot in the future is a spoiler? If it's just a classic clickbait necessity for the youtube algorhythm, sure, but there is anyone REALLY that gullible, right?
I think they should go full tilt with the changes. Keep the most recent death permanent. Have Fjord become the BBEG instead and no romance with Jester. Make the shows almost unrecognizable from the campaigns. Be bold.
We have a pop filter on the mic. Pop filters stop plosives, not mouth noises, but that does mean we need to just be further from the mic in our current set up, which we will test out tomorrow!
A lot of what I think you might be hearing sounds more like a speech issue to me. It kind of sounds like how I sound when my tongue is swollen, or I have a cold and am making a lot more sh and th sounds than normal.
@@TheCharacterSheet I find 'mouth noise' is more of a opening your mouth wider and speaking 'more clearly' than you normally would than it is a distance to mic issue. (I just do a hobby person podcast with a Blue Snowball mic. Might be different with more professional equipment.) Distance to mic, in my experience, is more a set it at a 45 degree angle. And then too you can blow air going 'puh puh' to check by putting your fingers in front of your mouth to see if you feel the air push. Just rotate around until you don't feel that anymore.

How are announcments, official announcements considered spoilers? Thats overusing thus term I think.
So, no real spoilers....
Where did you find this Epic Stormlight information?
Love the new artwork on the DM screen. Reminds me of Dragonbane RPG.
the new DM screen art is super pretty
Yeah, we do mention that one possibility is a split campaign, where some weeks are Daggerheart Exandria and some weeks are D&D in a brand new setting!
(Interviews were with, if I recall, Marisha, Matt, and now the newest with Travis (which I don't have access to watch, but have heard reports on.)
If they were 100% separating from D&D why would they be vague about it?
the whole Robbie part isnt really news. I think i was Mercer himself that was ask in an interview or something about him joining as an permant memeber and he said no
Art is okay. Not my favorite but can live with it...
How much wood would Elijah Woods wood if Elijah Wood's name was Elijah Woods?
I was kind of confused why they would give away spoilers with the fate of Exandria being such an up in the air thing right now. Why not just wait until the campaign is over? It's almost done.
I think they have already recorded the campaigns ending so they have already done it lol. I might, be wrong.
Yeah, we think at this point they have recorded the end of the season already
I mean fjords parents can explored in the wedding live show and eluded too during this campaign.
Beyond the stars maybe? Still in the exandria universe, just beyond that as a starting ground. Spelljammer like?
Please be Spelljammer, please be Spelljammer, pleas-
I keep hoping that this group will do a Dagger Heart rpg exploring thir campaign world and run a game where they go off genre and do a scifi campaign.
Yeah, and off genre campaign would be really interesting. They may have to make it a seperate group though as we imagine most critters are here for fantasy based stuff!
I dislike the art of the new DM screen and hope they come out with an alternative version or two in the established styles.
Fair, art is very subjective, and while we actually like the new DM screen, we do understand that it doesn't match super well with the existing art styles!
I still want new exandria setting books for D&D that take place during the C2-C3 10 year gap, that would be awesome to see
I hate the idea of changing campaign 2. I'd much rather they just add onto content we missed instead of altering an amazing story.
I personally don't think Exandria and Daggerheart will be separate thing. Critical Role can perfectly change the system from D&D to Daggerheart and continue their campaign. Worlds change, that's all.
You killed Percy bring him back. Because if you ever get to and animated bells hells, he has to be there to put Ashton down in that nice Percy way
Thanks for the spoiler
I think a shift to daggerheart will cost them a lot of fans.
I do not like the art on the new DM screen. I have consitently loved D&D art, but this new style is a departure from the quality that has been a part of the D&D universe.
the wedding could happen in the afterlife, a Heaven wedding of sorts
The actor's name is Elijah Wood, not "Woods."
USA and Australia is NOT a world tour…..
You bring up solid points, which is why we suspect they will have 2 "main" campaigns next year. one D&D and one Daggerheart.
Its a shame. As someone who has roleplayed for 40+ years, Daggerheart just isn't that good of a system. its ok and fun for one offs and short stints, but by no means lends itself to a long term campaign. The variety of things you can do with spells etc just isn't there.
or maybe you're too attached to D&D
It's a new system and they can still improve it. Just like there were a lot of fixes since the first edition of D&D.
Damm i would love to have a campaign 4
I think there should be ZERO blank space or art on the INSIDE of the DM screen. More reference!
I don't love the outside art, it's OK. But 20 bucks would be waste, IMO
I kind of guessed the Daggerheart would be their new series format...I for one can't wait to see how it all plays out.
I don't understand why people still think cr will do a dnd campaign after campaign 3 it makes zero sence for them to do dnd after daggerheart launches
@@ColonelBleep There is none. Dude is talking out of his ass.
Shows in the US and Australia is considered a "World Tour"??? Ya ok whatever.
My chips are on them dropping dnd altogether and only streaming daggerheart to promote their new game.
I love Robbie so much….
I love Robbie that’s all
Elijah WoodS?! Wood. His surname is Wood, not Woods.
I don't like the new DM screen. The story I like the most is hearing new possibilities of critical role
They need to keep Robbie out.. not because he's bad or anything. But because the table is just too big
i really miss the airbrushed iconic fantasy art style of the 90s by people like elmore, easley, brom, etc. all the art these days is too cartoonish, overdressed, lacks curves, and is easily forgotten... 😮💨
Saturday morning cartoon dm screen. Lame.
The art on the new DM screen is not somthing that will get me to buy it.
Is Elija Wood finally going to wear wigs?
That DM screen just screams 'Made by a they/them'.
don't care about Dagger heart
"World" tour
wow a 10 year old's inspired DM screen, I'm sure many players will like the idea of comparing them to kids instead of the die-hard fans they are
your ego that fragile? it's a dm screen, not an attack on your character. it's not that deep.
No no no 😢 plz don't make another LotR movie. Just let these IP and worlds be. Wtf, just stop
What a terrible clickbait title, the "controversy" boils down to "some people were hoping for different art". This bad-faith journalism is what prevents honest content creators from making real money.
All you do is complain. Good lord.
I would much rather Robbie stay and Talisen step away.
i really hope that robbie sticks around :(
….. the game will stay in Exandria
And they will use the Daggerheart system
There is a reason Mercer is currently killing the gods, because that’s the last part that belongs to WOTC
Which is also the reason why C3 doesn’t have the same pull as C2 and nowhere near the pull of C1. The ending is already obvious
what if aabria and Robbie will be main cast of dagger hart?
They are no longer playing a TTRPG, they are acting out concepts with planned events.
Bro missed the mark on all counts
That screen is a huge fail. Low contrast, tons of wasted space, and artwork for 5 year olds that appears to pit adventurers against each other. It will be visible during every second of play and sets a tone in contract to most DnD themes and content as well. Worried about the MM
Is anyone REALLY thinking them announcing a Jester-Fjord wedding oneshot in the future is a spoiler? If it's just a classic clickbait necessity for the youtube algorhythm, sure, but there is anyone REALLY that gullible, right?
Many would consider 'Jester & Fjord will survive until at least after the NYC live show next Oct' a spoiler, yes.
I think they should go full tilt with the changes. Keep the most recent death permanent. Have Fjord become the BBEG instead and no romance with Jester. Make the shows almost unrecognizable from the campaigns. Be bold.
I'd love to see Fjord as the BBEG instead of Lucien this time!
2 things, it's Wood not Woods, and I'm begging you, please get a pop filter, those mouth noises ruined the whole video for me
We have a pop filter on the mic. Pop filters stop plosives, not mouth noises, but that does mean we need to just be further from the mic in our current set up, which we will test out tomorrow!
@@TheCharacterSheet you can do a lot in post processing with a de-esser
A lot of what I think you might be hearing sounds more like a speech issue to me. It kind of sounds like how I sound when my tongue is swollen, or I have a cold and am making a lot more sh and th sounds than normal.
@@TheCharacterSheet I find 'mouth noise' is more of a opening your mouth wider and speaking 'more clearly' than you normally would than it is a distance to mic issue. (I just do a hobby person podcast with a Blue Snowball mic. Might be different with more professional equipment.)
Distance to mic, in my experience, is more a set it at a 45 degree angle. And then too you can blow air going 'puh puh' to check by putting your fingers in front of your mouth to see if you feel the air push. Just rotate around until you don't feel that anymore.
Are ... those marks of a masectomy on the black elf? WTF? what sense have that on a magic world? The more i see that image the less i like.
