i was lucky to hear prey several times before he died. besides his amazing voice and artistry, he struck me as deeply sensitive and human. i think that really comes through here.
Untill I heard Hermann Prey, I was in love with Jose Carreas and Bing Crosby, I still love them but Hermann Prey is the one that I always want to listen to...
It was the same with people who compared, usually to Prey's detriment, him and D F-D. They are both fabulous but THANKFULLY different, complementary. Prey and Hampson too. This is truly a wonderful interpretation of Mahler. I used to own the set with Prey. Wunderbar. Vielen Dank.
Engelszunge8
Beautiful! Prey even has the good sense to finesse his way to the top notes rather than bellowing them. The conductor and orchestra are also excellent.
Sublime, from conductor, orchestra, and Herr Prey. And he looks so truly overcome emotionally. Such a great artist. Only thing marring this is the total lack of women. Very sexist times. But great performance...
I can't agree. Two different singers, different vocal quality. I've just been listening to the Hampson version on the radio, and it too is faultless. The sound hasn't made the leap to TH-cam very well.
If you look at his face, he seems like he feels sick, perhaps feverish. Given that, I wouldn't blame him for wanting to finish the concert. But he gives an amazing performance. That is commitment.

Don't you start crying, Hermann Prey. 'Cause if you start crying, then I'm going to start crying, and- oh, god, I'm crying...

Meisterklasse!

Conductor is Vaclav Neumann. I think it's the SW German Radio Orchestra. It's flawless.
Excellent emotive singing
2:43 -> 2:58 coda
Hermann Prey is always awesome
...neben Schlusnus ist er mein Mahlerinterpret ! Bei den Frauen von Stade !!! LES

Why is Prey vs Hampson even being discussed? Prey is so far beyond him.

Agree
Schoene Stimme voor die prachtige lied!! komt toch nog een beetje tekort om aan Schlusnus te raken. Maar toch zeer aangenaam!!
after watching Thomas Hampson's interpretation, it looks like Hermann Prey wants to finish the concert quickly and come back home soon. Dislike!

You do know the score is marked "Alla Marcia" (like a march) right?
