Please make a video about complete startup of the ship before sailing including navigation. I want to see buttons being pushed and motor start up and other preparations with explanations. I love all your videos
As you were wandering around Fort Flagler I got a distinct feeling of déjà vu and as I've not been within a thousand miles of that area I thought that's odd. Particularly around 13:04. Then An Officer and a Gentleman came to mind. Turns out the film crew were based in Port Townsend just across the water so it's not beyond the realms of possibility that some location shots were taken at the Fort...another mystery.
Wow, you guys continue to get better videos every week. I watch on iPad and use smart phone to follow trip on google maps and other apps, and read about places you visit. Fort Flagler looks very much like Fort Stevens near Astoria, which still has several of the large disappearing guns. Beautiful sunset photo with Eliz, maybe you should frame that for hanging in cabin. I look forward to hearing about San Juan’s next week.
Another great Sunday installment! In addition to Fort Flagler and the other Triangle of Fire forts guarding the entrance to Admiralty Inlet, there was also Fort Whitman on Goat Island guarding the entrance through Deception Pass. The island has no road access. If you're ever in La Connor, take a dinghy ride, beach behind the log rafts and scramble up the unimproved trail to the bluff paralleling the channel. You'll find the fort as it was, abandoned in the 1940's.
007 does it all. So impressive with the maintenance abilities of this guy. Love his answer to the fouled anchor, "yeah, we've got tools, just cut it with the 90" LOL. Always awesome content and videography. Every time I launch my drone over water, my knees get week, and my palms sweat. I'm glad you guys have a grip on it because the video impact is over the top.
For some reason, I listened critically to Elizabeth's soliloquy (after your opening) and find her speech, grammar and vocabulary to be well-spoken. Brava. Another post addressed the “two Island” observation plus that sand spit is covered at high tide. That’s similar to Camino Island where you don’t understand how it could be an Island when you drive out to visit. Regarding “the hook” - at high tide I’m sure some folks have been surprised if they tried to shortcut the marked channel! And finally, I will second/third/fourth/etc the comments re the increased quality of your videos, your delivery, and the increased confidence reflected in the “dialog”. Thanks for the continued efforts to keep us all entertained. (We anchored in Mystery Bay in early Sept. I suspect many don’t realize how much of the water in the larger bay is somewhat “skinny”.)
OH Shawn!! FLIR makes Predictive Maintenance Hand Held’s (as do others) that are excellent for ship board logging and maintenance of all your rotating components, pumps, seals, manifold temps, cooling water temps etc... Add an IR Check List to your normal maintenance rounds allows you to predict when its time to refit, overall, replace, clean heat exchangers etc... Your an Engineer Dude! Surprised you don’t have that in your Boat Maintenance Quiver! (Hey Santa!!) OK... Next Put this on your list! The fortifications the Germans built prior to WWII are amazing and run along the entire east coast of Europe... (The Atlantic Wall) Great Nordhavn Adventures...The area around Normandy is spectacular and boating that area has many opportunities.... one of my unfulfilled dreams.... So much history there... you could literally spend months there and not get it all in... So put it on your list .... if I don’t make it there by boat I can just ride along with you’s guys! That is a pay attention entrance to Mystery Bay, strong currents also. Was behind you folks about a couple miles last Tuesday, thru Hale Pass,, Vessel Rogue. I turned right at Birch Bay, looks like you were heading to Blaine.. Maybe we will get a report on the oysters and ice cream there,in one of your upcoming vids.
Been to Fort Flagler. It is one of three forts that protected the entrance to Admiralty Inlet.The artillery canons combined with the other two forts of Fort Worden and Fort Casey created a Triangle of Fire. This video was excellent!
Sean you must be in boat captain heaven, as a tinkerer myself I envy your chores, I especially liked how you used your mouse to set the auto pilot, how cool is that and you even have a giant boom to play with! You have so much to play with on your little ship and a supportive 1st mate and lets not forget boat dog.

I located Port Towsend on google maps and suddenly realized we have cruised past on three cruises to Alaska from Smith Cove Cruise Termimal and didn't realize that this is the entrance to Puget Sound. By then we were usually eating. Another wonderful video.

Sure its already been mentioned, but - at the end of your chain rhode (in my opinion) there should be a line / rope rhode (painter) so if you need to ditch your anchor in hurry you can cut the painter. The line - rope - painter won't be used for holding just for a quick disconnect. Hasn't happened to me but a good friend had guests swimming off the back of the boat and they got swept up in current that carried them off FAST. They didn't have a tender down in the water or any way to rescue the guests except for moving the big boat. There would have been no fast way to cut the chain even if they had Milwaukee M12 and M18 tools ( which I love and have a ton on board including the vacuum seen in this video). They did have a safety rope / line / rhode / painter at the end of their chain and were able to free spool the chain quickly, then cut the safety painter with a multi tool that was on the hip of mate. All ended okay, they rescued the swimmers, and later recovered the anchor as the captain dropped a way point on the plotter / MFD
I like Fort Flagler more than Fort Warden. Less crowds and more space..I wish you would have shown getting through the hook Shaun. That is a little strip I don't like but it always seems like I'm there at low tide. Great video. Headlock is great cause the store is walking distance.
I love that area, I play there often. A little bit of history for you about marrowstone island. Years ago Indian island was public land marrowston island was government land. When the government decided Indian island was better suited for the ammo depot they filled in the narrow sand spit to the south to allow public access to marrowstone. Enjoy your stay up north!!
I’ve been watching your videos and am intrigued by your drone shots underway… are you able to land your drone on the boat while moving or do you have to heave-to to recover the drone? It would be a good episode to feature your various drone operations (maybe you’ve done one and I just haven’t got there yet). Nicely done… love your cruising lifestyle.
Glad y'all were able to make it! Marrowstone and Indian are 2 different islands, but they were joined by a man-made isthmus. That isthmus is currently being dismantled as a bridge was recently built. Yep, the entrance is pretty sketch, the shallowest spot is about 12-15 meters west from the middle of the reverse "S" that the channel makes. Right about here ->S. Did you get to hear the evening bugles from the magazine? If not then you gotta come back!

Great video! Are you using a drone for those eye-in-the-sky shots of your boat? Your narratives are really good and very informative too! You have the life! Curious, but what are your opinions of a Kady-Krogen of comparable size. I think both Nordhavn and Kady would be good choices, but I don't think the smaller Kady's offer a Portuguese bridge. I live outside of Los Angeles, Ca but have been to Seattle twice and both times it was hot and sunny! My friend still tries to convince me that it really does rain in Seattle! Yeah, sure! lol

We usually tend to make sure it’s secured close to avoid a lot of bopping around, but if the space had been limited we might’ve let the stern float out so others could slip in beside us 👍
How extensive a tool kit do you keep? and what tools do you use most often? I found gear wrenches are extremely useful (on cars etc..) And also you two make a very complimentary couple, an easy love shows in the videos, and Mr Sully benefits from that.
The kit is growing everyday and has become quite extensive especially since moving aboard full time. Probably what’s used most often are sockets, wrenches, pliers, side cutters...we’ve been starting to grow our cordless power tool collection from Milwaukee Tool like buffers, polishers, grinders, saws, drills, heat guns...
Yes we recently were in Coupeville - th-cam.com/video/8ChUT8Pu5m8/w-d-xo.html...but we’ve also been to Langley although not for about 5 years or so. We loved it there and want to go back, probably this Fall!

Tina B oh definitely not, there’s several mooring buoys right by the park dock and we’ve since gone back to anchor much closer for quicker dinghy access to the park 👍

Just south of where you were, on the west side of the Hood Canal , just a half mile north of the Hood Canal bridge there is an almost island called Hoods Head..... the rum runner smugglers hid at anchor in there at times. There is a great book called “ Rumrunner “.... about the life and adventures of Johnny Schnarr . No doubt Schnarr was in Mystery Bat at least once...
Pierce Power Adventures not at all mainly because we get so much done underway when we’re cruising in Puget Sound and the SJI’s that the time flies by and the ride is more peaceful 👍
I'm surprised they let you keep that drone footage. I'm on marrowstone and I am constantly hearing about guards shooting out in a RIB to intercept anyone who gets too close, and delete or destroy their photos. If you drive past Indian island there is a sign warning against droneflight. Marrowstone was an island 120 years ago, the isthmus is manmade. Indian was 100% a peninsula before they cut the channel.They actually just this year cut a channel between indian and marrowstone again as part of a salmon habitat restoration project. I've never seen a map of it, but geographically my understanding is that everything between the two islands constitutes Kilisut Harbor. Mystery bay is the little crescent to the east about halfway down (this I'm 100% sure of since I live adjacent to Mystery Bay state park) and then Scow Bay is at the far south end of Kilisut Harbor.
I have a couple of questions, 1 have you ever thought about getting a dash am, I would love to Watch a sped up view of what you see on a cruise. 2 how would you describe the engine noise throughout and in the loudest portion of the boat, can you watch tv, talk on the phone, whisper to each other? Re your anchor chain in the Q&A I always thought that the end of the chain had a rope section at the end this was if there was a problem you let out the last bit and cut it, hence the expression in the English language "The bitter end" as that is what it is called.
At 4:00 or so you are both down in the lower area of the boat - nobody is in the helm station I assume. How long is that OK? I've wondered if the captain or someone has to be at the helm all the time when underway.
How did you train the dogs to potty on the boat when you are not near land for long periods of time? We have had ours on the boat for a couple of years now and they kill them selves trying to hold it or not even eating for long periods of time.

in the pnw north of vancouver theres alot of crap in the water rocks that the charts dont pick up logs thats why people have steel boats in ak. how will you navigate the waterways to seward or anchorage.
Question, Wing engine, what is its capability (speed, range) and how often do you use it? Do you ever use them both? Do you ever feel you wish you had twins?
It gets about 4 knots in calm water and burns less fuel than the main (3-3500), so maybe the wing could get 5-6000 nautical miles? We exercise it about monthly and sometimes use both when docking in windy or tight conditions...just to be safe in case of anything...and also as an excuse to exercise it 👍
Love this channel! Why do you choose 6,5knots speeds? Not sure if it has anything to do with the displacement hull vs planning. We will usually floor it to 30knots with similar fuel economy as at 6, but it’s a planning hull. Went from Olympia to Friday harbor in half a day that wau
Yeah, FD hulls are much smoother than a semi-displacement hull. Redline is probably low too maybe around 2,500 RPMs. Also at 6.5 NMH, mileage is awesome probably at around 3-4 gallons/mile or better. Trawlering's not about speed, it's about comfort.
It seems that you use your water maker a lot. Have you thought of replacing your pre-filters with a small swimming pool sand filter? Maintenance and cost is very minimal.
In your drone shot, I noticed your rode is vertical. I’ve seen that on other trawlers as well. Why isn’t it more at a 45 degree or greater angle? Unless it’s your rode laying on the bottom your riding over.
Were you anchored at Mystery Bay the entire time? Where did you take the dingy to, was that near the campgrounds? did you walk all the way to the Battery?

We use it for both drinking and showers and get about 7 gal/hour. It’s a small capacity 12v watermaker but it keeps up!
I've lived and worked in building just like those in my early days in the Army. Took a long time to get rid of most of them.

We usually tend to make sure it’s secured close to avoid a lot of bopping around, but if the space had been limited we might’ve let the stern float out so others could slip in beside us 👍
How extensive a tool kit do you keep? and what tools do you use most often? I found gear wrenches are extremely useful (on cars etc..) And also you two make a very complimentary couple, an easy love shows in the videos, and Mr Sully benefits from that.
The kit is growing everyday and has become quite extensive especially since moving aboard full time. Probably what’s used most often are sockets, wrenches, pliers, side cutters...we’ve been starting to grow our cordless power tool collection from Milwaukee Tool like buffers, polishers, grinders, saws, drills, heat guns...

Tina B oh definitely not, there’s several mooring buoys right by the park dock and we’ve since gone back to anchor much closer for quicker dinghy access to the park 👍

Johan van Tonder we burn about 3 gal/hour, less if we can stand to cruise at 5.5-6.5 knots!

Yes we love those spots and can’t wait to go back once the border reopens! Tofino and Hot Springs Cove are two of our favorites!
I remember going to Indian Island many times back in my Navy days.
Just south of where you were, on the west side of the Hood Canal , just a half mile north of the Hood Canal bridge there is an almost island called Hoods Head..... the rum runner smugglers hid at anchor in there at times. There is a great book called “ Rumrunner “.... about the life and adventures of Johnny Schnarr . No doubt Schnarr was in Mystery Bat at least once...

Pierce Power Adventures not at all mainly because we get so much done underway when we’re cruising in Puget Sound and the SJI’s that the time flies by and the ride is more peaceful 👍
However when we get stuck in a bad current and find ourselves cruising at 3 knots...then we kinda miss a faster boat 😉
I'm surprised they let you keep that drone footage. I'm on marrowstone and I am constantly hearing about guards shooting out in a RIB to intercept anyone who gets too close, and delete or destroy their photos. If you drive past Indian island there is a sign warning against droneflight.
Marrowstone was an island 120 years ago, the isthmus is manmade. Indian was 100% a peninsula before they cut the channel.They actually just this year cut a channel between indian and marrowstone again as part of a salmon habitat restoration project.
I've never seen a map of it, but geographically my understanding is that everything between the two islands constitutes Kilisut Harbor. Mystery bay is the little crescent to the east about halfway down (this I'm 100% sure of since I live adjacent to Mystery Bay state park) and then Scow Bay is at the far south end of Kilisut Harbor.
I have a couple of questions, 1 have you ever thought about getting a dash am, I would love to Watch a sped up view of what you see on a cruise. 2 how would you describe the engine noise throughout and in the loudest portion of the boat, can you watch tv, talk on the phone, whisper to each other?

Re your anchor chain in the Q&A I always thought that the end of the chain had a rope section at the end this was if there was a problem you let out the last bit and cut it, hence the expression in the English language "The bitter end" as that is what it is called.
At 4:00 or so you are both down in the lower area of the boat - nobody is in the helm station I assume. How long is that OK? I've wondered if the captain or someone has to be at the helm all the time when underway.

How did you train the dogs to potty on the boat when you are not near land for long periods of time? We have had ours on the boat for a couple of years now and they kill them selves trying to hold it or not even eating for long periods of time.

Many sections below the waterline and near the keel are around 2”, thicker below the waterline!

in the pnw north of vancouver theres alot of crap in the water rocks that the charts dont pick up logs thats why people have steel boats in ak. how will you navigate the waterways to seward or anchorage.
Question, Wing engine, what is its capability (speed, range) and how often do you use it? Do you ever use them both? Do you ever feel you wish you had twins?
It gets about 4 knots in calm water and burns less fuel than the main (3-3500), so maybe the wing could get 5-6000 nautical miles? We exercise it about monthly and sometimes use both when docking in windy or tight conditions...just to be safe in case of anything...and also as an excuse to exercise it 👍
Love this channel! Why do you choose 6,5knots speeds? Not sure if it has anything to do with the displacement hull vs planning. We will usually floor it to 30knots with similar fuel economy as at 6, but it’s a planning hull. Went from Olympia to Friday harbor in half a day that wau
Alex Nichiporchik Freedom is a FD trawler so we can only cruise around 7.5 knots, maybe faster if we catch a good current 👍
Yeah, FD hulls are much smoother than a semi-displacement hull. Redline is probably low too maybe around 2,500 RPMs. Also at 6.5 NMH, mileage is awesome probably at around 3-4 gallons/mile or better.
Trawlering's not about speed, it's about comfort.

It seems that you use your water maker a lot. Have you thought of replacing your pre-filters with a small swimming pool sand filter? Maintenance and cost is very minimal.

In your drone shot, I noticed your rode is vertical. I’ve seen that on other trawlers as well. Why isn’t it more at a 45 degree or greater angle? Unless it’s your rode laying on the bottom your riding over.
Fred Eversole we use an anchor bridal to lessen the amount of force or tug on the boat from anchor pulling.
Were you anchored at Mystery Bay the entire time? Where did you take the dingy to, was that near the campgrounds? did you walk all the way to the Battery?
