    Great informational video. Tonight I was struggling trying to get a new dust cap on my trailer with a rubber mallet to no avail. I watched this video and returned to my task with a block of wood and a hammer. And low and behold, success! The trick is you can’t be afraid to give it a solid wack. Worked like a charm.

    Does anyone know why the middle of the dustcap is now rubber?
    Used to be all medal.
    Thinking for air pressure when putting it on perhaps.
    Or perhaps it's a strength thing. Less likely to dent it when putting it on.

      The reason for the rubber plug on the dust caps is that Dexter/Rockwell Axles now come with Either Posi or EZ lube spindles. Meaning on the end of the spindle is a grease zert allowing you to grease the hubs greasing the inner bearing first. The rubber plug is so you can easily access this grease zert

      Didn't know that. That is a good idea. Makes it easy to keep greased.

    My outer diameter on the dust cap is too small, it should be 1.98" and according to etrailer it is, but it falls right out. Is there a fix to this?

    You make it look so easy. Didn't work for me. Ended up bending mine. The lip was slightly deformed to begin with, though. Makes me wonder if it was ever seated properly. This is on a new travel trailer.

    I’ve tried about 20 caps and can’t get any in, if belted them all completely out of shape and flattened the others completely

      What brand hubs do you have and what size cap are you using. It is best to use a rubber mallet or block of wood so pressure is applied evenly when installing. It is similar to installing wheel seals. They must go in evenly.

    Why remove the whole thing? The rubber plug comes off and can be replaced when worn

      Probably because it would be impossible to remove the spindle nut and cotter pin which is required to remove the hub which is required because ??? Need a bigger hub? Need to replace the inner/outer bearings? Or really in a lot of cases adjust the system/bearing play/slop per procedure? I'd just like to know if the cap is pretty sturdy (some are thicker than what's shown), then is the a way to remove the dust cap w/o damage to reuse? I don't think so because the lip that inserts into the hub crushes some and that crush is tight and subsequent use will be loose. There's a good analogy for this but it might not be PC to mention here :)

      @@motleypixel Actually there's an easy way to remove them and re-install them with no damage. I described it above.

    Why are you beating the dust caps with a hammer to remove them? They are just sheet metal. Are you surprised they get dented? The correct way to remove them is drive a sharp screw driver tip or putty knife behind the lip and pry them off. To reinstall, you simply use the screw driver tip against the lip of the cap and tap it back on with a hammer. You don't beat directly on the caps with a hammer, unless you intend to damage it. DUHH

      This was for demonstration proposes. Yes you can remove with a screw driver. We just chose to use hammer to tap it off. There are many ways to remove a damaged dust cap. we just chose this method.
