What type of paint was used?
We typically use rustoleum paint and spray ourselves
How much in material ball park ?
honestly it is hard to ballpark and steel prices vary across the country. At this time we built this we spent around I believe $3,000 in steel. Prices for steel are constantly changing going up and down.
I feel like building a 16ft gooseneck dump trailer. Cool build.
Thanks, would be cool to see your build. We are looking at adding more dump trailer plans in the future and are looking at the gooseneck plans.
Excellent job on the trailer would like to see a build the dumpster next
If I buy your plans am I allowed to Build trailers from them for profit?
Yes, you can build as many trailers as you want. You just can not sell the plans as the plans are copyrighted.
Sounds good
Mig outside?
Yes, it works just fine outside as long as there is no wind. If windy then you loose your gas.
how do you manage to weld mig outside?
using gas and no wind
Hi do you have any idea where I can get the angle iron?please.
you can pick up angle iron from most steel suppliers. They usually stock it
Thanks
lol the human weld curtain
It looks like 2x8s, 2x6s, and 2x4s, 1/4” walls, am I close?
Can I replace just the centre bolt in the spring
Yes, if your asking about to bolt that holds spring pack together. Just make sure to use proper bolt length for your spring pack. Typically if that bolt is rusted off. I would recommend replacing the springs.
Thank you for this clear explanation! I was wrongfully thinking the measurement was taken center to center. I'm going bonkers looking for a set of 5 on 4-1/4 hubs for a 42 year old boat trailer. Thought perhaps they were obsolete. I have ordered one of your 5 bolt templates from your website!
Glad it was helpful!
Plastic bushings?
They are a teflon bushing
is the leaf spring shackle necessary?
Yes, I would recommend using shackles as it is part of the Suspension
Why do some people fill their hubs with grease?
I’ve tried about 20 caps and can’t get any in, if belted them all completely out of shape and flattened the others completely
What brand hubs do you have and what size cap are you using. It is best to use a rubber mallet or block of wood so pressure is applied evenly when installing. It is similar to installing wheel seals. They must go in evenly.
It looks like you are building the trailers in quantity. A simple table jig would really help and ensure accuracy and speed production. You guys can obviously cut and weld steel and a jig would help tremendously. You have the right work attitude anyway.
Good Morning, We actually do not build in quantity. When we come out with new blueprints we do a test build to make sure the plans are good to go before we offer them for sale. Yes, if we were to build in quantity we would build jigs to speed up the process, but as of now we only build one trailer per blueprint we offer.
For the wheel part what are those called!
Are you asking about the axles?
Thank you so much for a specific and clear video! This video gave me exactly what I need. Thanks!!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks
Hey, what profile cross-section and wall thickness was used?
Cost 10x more to build then to buy one lol
It all depends on what your looking for. The plans for these trailers get you a well built sturdy trailer that will last. Cheaper trailers (like those sold at most hardware type stores) you can buy usually will have lighter steel and tend to not last. If looking for a trailer for light use then a cheaper prebuilt might be a good option. If your looking to have a trailer for heavier use and that will last, you usually are better building one as you can build them cheaper than most comparable trailers to this that you can buy plus you can build it out to your specification. Even with Steel prices today, for the cost of most of the cheaper trailers you can buy, you can build a trailer like this for usually same cost or cheaper and end up with a much better trailer. It really depends on steel price in your area. When looking at trailers you typically find the cheaper ones have less crossmembers and use lighter gauge steel. As price for same size trailer goes up you will find they use thicker gauge steel and more crossmembers.
@@johnsontrailerparts ya the price is off up there
Are you guys selling these plans?
At this time we do not have the plans for this listed for sale but are working to add them. Here is Link for plans we currently offer. johnsontrailerparts.com/product-category/trailer-plans-blueprints/
Good video. The music is annoying, Had to mute it before I lost my mind.
Looking good. What size is the frame and crossmembers? Any update video on it?
Trailer is completed. We will have to do a update video on it. I dont have sizing off hand.
Short and sweet. Just the way it needs to be.
Really nice. But all those hoses hanging, makes it look sloppy. Maybe use tubing where it's possible.
Yes, you may use Hydraulic tubing. As this is a general add on kit it only comes with the hoses. This was a customers trailer that customer installed the jack kit themselves.
I have a 14 for trailer (deck length) . Where do you measure from for center of axle placement? From tongue or from front of deck ? Is it 60 percent of deck length or 60 percent of total trailer length ? Or is the 60 percent wrong in general . Thanks for any help ... If I go by the 60 percent of deck length, it should be moved forward a few more inches but that isn't far from being center of deck .... I feel like it should be moved back a few inches ...
Typically you would do the 60% rule on the deck length, not on overall trailer length. So if you have a 14' deck you would measure from front of deck back about 8' 4" and that would be where you would center the axle. That would put about 5' 6" of deck behind axle. If it is a tandem axle trailer, same thing but you would center the center hanger for equalizer off of that measurement putting one axle in front of the 60% and one behind the 60%. There are many ways to calculate axle placement depending on trailer type and how weight is distributed. For most utility type trailer the 60/40 rule works just fine.
@johnsontrailerparts thank you for the info , I plan to make this a tandem axle trailer at some point but for now it will remain a single axle . Thats where I have the axle at now but it just looked to far forward to me . I just wanted to be sure basically. I used the 60/40 rule back when I placed the axle .
What the average amount that cost on the material for the build
The steel cost to build will vary depending on your local steel supplier. For the trailer parts kit that includes everything but steel to build we offer them here: johnsontrailerparts.com/shop/6ft-utility-trailer-parts-kit-3-5k-model-u72-120-35j/ When purchasing this kit we offer the blueprints for free.
What’s the hydraulic selector port called that you pushed down/lift up for bed/tongue? Thanks
It is called the selector valve. The new design has a handle the you would turn to select between the jack or dump bed.
Nice
Thanks
Why don't you have a lower support plate for your jack? Especially since your frame is only L channel and not a boxed frame or even C channel frame...
Hi, which rim to use in a toyota 4x2 hilux 1997? Please give all details. Thanks.
I believe on Toyota trucks, if it is a 6 lug pattern it would take a 6 on 5.5" (6x139.7) bolt pattern wheel, If it is a 5 lug it would be either, 5 on 4.5" (5x114.3) bolt pattern or a 5x100 bolt pattern. When it comes to vehicles they may have different bolt patterns than what trailers would have. It would be best to check to see if it is marked on the door placard or owners manual for what bolt pattern your truck is.
Thank you
You're welcome
How much torque did you put on the bolts on the leaf springs? I only saw the torque on the U bolts, unless I missed it? Thanks
on the suspension bolts you do not torque down, Behind the head of the bolt it has splines to lock the bolt in and keeps it from rotating. The nuts are lock nuts and you would tighten them down to leave about a business cards width in-between hanger and spring. This small gap allow the suspension to move freely. If you torque them down tight this would bind the suspension up.
Any update on this trailer? It is looking good
Thank you, Trailer is finished, We forgot to film more of the build of it. I will do a walk around video of it at some point. It turned out great.
I love this dude. Badass trailer man I’m about to dumb a like on this video 👍
Thank you
Hi there, where abouts did you position the jack to lift the trailer and do the shackle with the axle still attached?
You want to make sure trailer frame is held up with jack stands, then using jack to support axle as you replace the shackles.
I may be wrong, but it looks like you welded the shorter mount in the front and swiveled off the taller in the rear. I believe that is the opposite of the graphic you shared. The leaf spring should have ended up being more parallel with the trailer deck.....
On the hangers there is a narrow one an wider one. The narrow one goes to rear of trailer with shackles and wider one to front. The spring only drops into the wider one on front and rear hanger requires shackles.
You really should put washers under nuts. And shifter? Far out 🤷♂️ 😂
The hanger kit hardware do not require washers as the bolts are splined to keep them locked into position and the nuts are lock nuts. When tightening down the suspension hanger bolts they are not torqued down as you need to allow movement for suspension so it does not bind.
Around how much did that metal cost you for that build?
Steel prices very depending on where your at, but we had around $2000 in steel for this build. We also had some of the steel on hand.
Damn, I went to school to become an engineer in the time it took him to build this trailer
Thank you
Dittos
Thats pretty neat
Thanks. Just as you described.
Your welcome
I looked at the plans and kit and didn't notice any of the wall or decking material..Am I wrong?
In the instruction portion on the plans on page 6 it talks about what sheet material is needed for floor and side walls. It also gives options for different thickness sheets you could use.
