Great video. I have coincidentaly been getting back into Rattray blends myself. I have not yet tried BC, but thanks to your review it is on the list. Merry Christmas! Mike.
A very enjoyable watch as always! Had McCranies Red Flake and gave it away as it had that McClellands signature twang to it. Someone said its 5100 red cake perhaps?
+Matches860 Thanks John, yea I think I heard the same thing on someone's video. I'll try it again here in a week or two after I smoke through these 300g of Rattrays :)
I'm sure you've changed since this was made, but I find that a pure Virginia has to be the first smoke of the day or it has to be a few hours removed from anything else because the flavors are so delicate and fleeting. It makes you work for it. I always preferred the Rattray's to most Mclelland straight Virginias. Good thing too because they are gone now haha
I've always thought piping would be a hobby I'd enjoy and started considering it seriously a couple weeks ago. I came across your channel shortly after starting my research. Your content and reviews are excellent! This video excited me since I'm a fellow North Carolinian and I live Charlotte. I'm off to check out McCranie's this morning. One of those places I've been by countless times and always wanted to stop in. Keep up the great work!
+NCcraftsman Thanks man. It's definitely a hobby but you can go as deep as your taste buds are willing to take you, that's why I like it. I hope you get some Currituck. And I hope you can make it out this April for the Raleigh Pipe Expo.
+Public Piper So I got the Currituck along with some Old Master that was recommended to me. I smoked my first bowl of Currituck last night and the results were on par with what I expected. Not a mind blowing experience, but enjoyable. I'm wondering if I would enjoy something with more flavor. Going to try the old master tonight to at least have something to compare it to. Just between smelling the two I'm liking the chocolate note from the old master out of the bag. I enjoy drinking nice bourbons and black coffee, so any suggestions based on that would be greatly appreciated.
+Public Piper This was my first piping experience/bowl ever, so I can't compare with anything else. I may be premature in saying I need more flavor, but that was my initial impression after smoking. More complexity would probably be a better term than flavor. You could compare me to a guy drinking his first glass of wine trying to give his thoughts to a sommelier, but to put my first experience into words I would say currituck would be smokeable and tobacco-y( if that's a word).
+NCcraftsman Oh wow, I didn't know this was your first bowl ever. In that case, just the fact it wasn't terrible is a huge achievement! As a brand new piper, it's definitely going to take a dozen bowls or so before you can pull out some of what a blend has to offer. But I'd say jump to an English blend so that you can sense what a lot of flavor is. If you think this hobby is something you want to pursue, I'd say buy several tins of highly reviewed blends (from tobaccoreviews.com) so that at least you can agree/disagree with what other seasoned pipe smokers are saying. If you're not yet comfortable with putting in a big order online at pipesandcigars.com (or a similar site), I did see that McCraines has Dunhill tins in stock. Night Cap and Balkan Blue (both are English blends with latakia) should provide you with a much stronger, smokier flavor so that at least you can get some kind of strong flavors going on.
I'm glad you've tried Dawn Mist clay pipes. I'll be sad the day when she stops making pipes. I ordered four of her churchwarden styled pipes a few years ago, thinking that I'd probably break one. Luckily, that hasn't happened. They're a little more durable than I thought they would be. Furthermore, because they keep the tobacco flavour pure, there was a while when I found myself smoking her pipes exclusively, before I realized that I haven't touched a briar or a corncob in months. Anyways, love your channel.
+Alexander Sy My thoughts exactly, the longer I have these the more I appreciate them. She takes her work very seriously. And I kind of like the fact they are relatively unpopular.
Great video as always, the most informative on video....i am saddened to see you were not welcomed at Mccraines, after all you do for the industry , this is not right, but its their loss keep up the good work
Good video. I'v ordered tobacco from McCranies in the past (daybreak, good stuff). However, I was hoping that you were going to have a longer time showing the inside of the shop. Any reason why not?
I love McCrainies, I got my first pipe there and they always are very friendly even though I'm a little younger than their usual crowd. In some ways I like them better than tinderbox at south park mall. I bought red flake back in 2011 or so and jarred it and put it in my cellar and just realized I haven't even tried it, I might need to break that out
@tagheuer001 nothing can be perfect but if the overall experience was good then that makes it worth it. When I started smoking pipe to quit cigs i went in there at 24 y/o and knew nothing. They spent a while explaining the tobaccos, packing(which I'm still horrible at), and there were 4 older gentlemen that asked if I'd like to sit, it was nice since it didn't matter young or old the company, the conversation, and the tobacco of course was all that mattered
I love that Red Flake, not enough nicotine for me to smoke often but that fine Va flavour is grand. I'll make a point of finding the other two. Great video as always. Merry Christmas!
A number of good tobaccos to think about. Alec is CERTAINLY responsible for my love of Currituck- it is fantastic. Guess I need to get down to Charlotte and check the place out soon.
Man, your videos are so good. Got some Rattray blends on the way, but now you got me thinking about clay pipes.
+Derek Tant Thanks Derek, this one's an old one.
Great video. I have coincidentaly been getting back into Rattray blends myself. I have not yet tried BC, but thanks to your review it is on the list. Merry Christmas! Mike.
+CaneRodPiper Thanks Mike, and definitely give BC a shot.

+Public Piper Yeah, I like 5100, and was just disappointed that it was the same thing with a different label.
Great video! I love Hal O' the Wynd. Looking forward to the other two Rattrays. Take care!

Delicate is the right word there. Some baccys just need to be isolated from the bully flavor and body bombs :)

Nice video with a again a lot of information, thanks! All the best and Greetings from Zurich, Armin
+Armin Eyer Thanks Armin, and merry Xmas from across the pond.

Thanks Fred. Yea it was a bit of a bummer but it was still a great trip.
Great reviews and thanks for the reference on the clay pipes. I've been looking for a good clay pipe source. 👍
+Island Piper My pleasure IP, if you get one of hers I don't think you'll be disappointed.
Good video. I'v ordered tobacco from McCranies in the past (daybreak, good stuff). However, I was hoping that you were going to have a longer time showing the inside of the shop. Any reason why not?
+Ralph Burns Thanks Ralph. To answer your question, yea...I didn't get a good vibe that made me want to ask.

It was a mixed bag for me, but I look back now with fondness :)

+4cooey Thank you and Merry Xmas to you too.
Really interesting comparison!

+Colin Kelly That guy spreads like a virus :D (except for Sea Duck)
+Colin Kelly I need to definitely get some Currituck for my summer trip to Corolla. :)
Another great and informative video. Where did you get those clay pipes? Other than a dry smoke, what else do you like about the way they smoke?
+From Seeds to Stogies I got them from Dawn Mist. It's hard to explain the clay smoke experience. You got to experience it.
Loved this video man, I'm really getting into your vids bud...lol
+PipeLeisure Thanks brother :)
Always good videos..
+Old Khakies Thank you
Hey man. I really miss your videos. Did you stop smoking a pipe?
Anyways, I hope you're doing well.
Yea, smoking my cob right now actually. I've done a few livestreams in the past years. You can find them on my channel page under LiveStream
