Joseph. Don’t be nervous we’re all family . Happy to see the gentleman are doing some cooking too. He will win some ladies heart fixing her a meal one day. 👍🏼
Wow!! When I was 10 years old my grandmother showed me how to do this. I am 72 years old now and still make them!! Some things are so good they never die!!
I love to see Joseph cooking with you - great way to encourage your kids to learn. I had these hobo packets as a child after my older brother learned about them in boy scouts. They were a favorite meal then. Now I'll have to make them for myself. I remember how wonderful they were.
I used to make this a LOT and for whatever reason quit for a while and completely forgot about it until I saw your post. Thanks for reminding me! I loved making and enjoying this one-package-meal, and now I will again! Just FYI, I sliced one potato per pack and put it on the bottom then a slice of sweet onion, my seasoned hamburger patty on that and cheese for those who desire it on top and closed up the foil. The potatoes and onion came out perfectly done as well as the meat. Nothing was ever undercooked or overcooked. I think with the potatoes and onion cooked nicely under the meat because of the juices and fat that dripped down on it during cooking! 👍
I did something like this 25 to 30 years ago while camping, I thought I was the only person that ever did this until a couple of years ago. I don’t do this nearly enough it is a very tasty meal
I used to do this 40 years ago when I was a summer camp counselor near Santa Cruz, CA. The kids made their own but we used chicken and tossed them right into the hot coals.
I think your son is so cute and I’m glad as a mother you are teaching him what he needs to know about cooking it seems like y’all get along good and I can see you have raised your children very well I’ve heard you say that he works what a good mother you are love love love your videos
My mom did this on the grill with potatoes/onions, heavy duty foil, butter, salt, pepper, 45min, only turning once, brown and carmelized. Best potatoes ever 😍
Y'all are sweet. Always made these on camping trips. Just assembly line chopping and stuffing, then onto the grill over the fire pit they went. Everyone loved them.
Joseph-not-the-hobo 😂 is sweet to his mom. And he reminds me of my Dad, who learned to cook because he loves to eat!! He is a good sous chef! I love hobo dinners. Oddly enough, it never occurred to me to put cheese on it!! Thanks for your recipes!!
We did these packs as a kid. We did not make a burger but left the hamburger broken in larger globs so it mixed right into the potatoe mixture. Anyway you make it,kids love it. We even used fresh green beans.
My Mama Use To Fix Hobo Packs All The Time In My Young Days She Would Slice Potatoes, Carrots, & She Would Crumble Hamburger On Top Of The Vegetables & Then She Would Sprinkle Onion Soup. Mix On Top This Looks Good Brings Back Child Hood Memories
Your little hobo is so cute....looks a lot like you.....he’s not so little......men that age love to eat, that’s for sure! My three boys ate anything that wasn’t nailed down. Good recipie and I love those foil packet dinners. Make sure you give Joseph a good birthday party! He’s a cutie !
Going to go make some of these now and have them ready. Being diabetic can't eat potatoes and carrots are mostly off limits as well but.....I am going to put Bell Pepper (red, green yellow), Onion and Mushrooms....great idea. So that's what's in my hobo packets. This will work great for my weekly meal prep.
I have made hobo dinners for years. A lot of times we put hamburger patties, potatoes, carrots, pork n bean, & onion in ours. But we make them with chicken & pork chops as well. Very easy & tasty.
Mom made something very similar when I was growing up. It was one of my favorite things! Haven’t thought of the hamburger packets in quite awhile. Thanks for the reminder! Now I have to make some! Awesome video, looking forward to it.
We made these when we went camping with the Boy Scouts (tag along little sister). The boys would pause just long enough to throw the stuff in the foil. Then they would throw them directly on the wood fire and flip them whenever they felt like it. Often times there was ash or even sand in the packet from the holes where the guys would poke them with a stick to turn them. They were delicious! This is a VERY forgiving technique.
And look at that beautiful red hair that runs in the family what a beautiful family you have and it’s so nice of you to share I particularly love the hobo dinners so thank you for posting this
We did something similar when my daughter was younger, but we sliced a potato and yellow onion, layered it under a hamburger Patty seasoned with salt and pepper, wrapped it in foil and put them into the campfire coals to cook. My daughter always looked forward to making Campfire Packets and still makes them today in the oven. The juice from the meat softened and cooked the potatoes and onions. Great childhood memory.
Hi 🙋♀️ there! Love when you have help in kitchen💗 Our 5 boys and my hubby all tower over me too LOL..and we gave one with red hair🥰 Enjoy your videos and recipe's so much! Bless you, and please never stop.
Grew up with these. Potatoes, onions, peas. Think we cooked low and slow-it was one of those walk away for a couple of hours and come back after the ball game. Yummy. Will make again. Thank you for the memories.
Catherine, a beautiful son. Bless you! Hi Joseph.you’re a great helper for mom. These look delicious Catherine. I’ll try them, it’s a different way to enjoy hamburgers with potatoes and veggie.Yummy. Thanks Joseph. Great to see our children help especially cooking together.

This is a very old camp recipe. we used sliced onion not powder and sliced potatoes. You can throw them in coals in grill or bury them in the the ground with coals . My boys loved them! They liked to help stack the ingredients in the foil packet.
Thank you!!! Brings back good memories! We did that on a campfire when I was a Girl Scout leader about 30 years ago. The girls made their own just putting in the things they liked! Fun Times! ❤️
hobo packets are great for campers, just make ahead and place in cooler, once you arrive at camp, get fire going and place packets over fire - set up camp and dinner should be done - very satisfying
Joseph. Don’t be nervous we’re all family . Happy to see the gentleman are doing some cooking too. He will win some ladies heart fixing her a meal one day. 👍🏼
