Something I did a few times was play a one on one with my brother when it comes to some rpgs that I writ up some stuff for. It helps me get a feel for things.
Anyway, I typically give the option of a group of characters to control or one jacked up character. For this, he picked playing as an entire unit and I'd say we had a bit of fun.

While I'm a big fan of games where you start as a relative nobody and slowly become more competent, all too often people seem to take this to the extreme of "your character only has a 1 in 3 chance of being able to tie his shoes."
Gross incompetence can work if the game is structured around the humor inherent in your character's incompetence (like Engine Heart) or if there are sufficient ways to fish for bonuses that you won't feel like the drunken toddler that your stats imply (like Only War).
It's nice to be able to play a character that feels at least somewhat realistic in terms of ability, because then you can take out a lot of meaningless rolling by everyone just agreeing that yeah, a regular person can probably do that task.
    Nice art, though.

I ran it twice. The card mechanics were pretty fun, tbh.

So, I actually played this at a convention. One of the devs ran it. And overall it was fun, felt like it required a lot less time to make a character and playing through the scenario didn't feel difficult at all. You talk a lot about what's best, or there being nothing in the game to encourage you to feel like a unit but it seemed like our group of complete strangers settled into that real easy and everyone ended up building out "roles" rather than just making the same thing. Circumstances would vary from group to group of course, but if everyone is down to lean into the theme it should work.

NGH is a great game. Lots of amazing flavor and alt-history wrapped with amazing artwork as inspiration. I'm still hoping for an US Air Service and other air forces expansion book/campaign!

Did you actually play the game? This game really focuses on the "Unit" not the individual as it mentions in the book. Also thIs survival horror game, so you will not be a super hero, if you play as an individual you will die...but play as a unit and the fun begins. I have always had a great time every chance I got to play it and con games fill up fast. So if unit based survival horror is a thing for you tjen you should really give this game a chance. It is great :)

Great video. but most important... WHERE DID YOU GET THESE AMAZING ART OUTSIDE OF CORE BOOK IMAGES!?!? They look so cool!

Some are from the Expansions, others are from the main Artists work. Some I just found while googling.
Our Triangle Nightmare Crusader at the end is from Trench Crusade, which is its own bag of worms.

Would you say the book is worth getting just for the setting and lore material? Our group runs rpg-lite a lot (aka FATE) and it sounds like that the system would be pretty compatible aside from the "party" focused aspect of it.

Hmmmmm, read the summary of things around, if it's really activating your neurons, then it may be worth it. Apparently the supplementary material is 95% Lore Stuff as well, so that may shift your opinion.

Great review as always. Yeah, I actually bought this the art drew me in. But it's pretty lackluster overall. As you say great premise but not all that well executed.
