Just as an FYI, the video shows a character mixing multiple Warrior-type classes several times (i.e. Fighter + Fencer). You generally *don't* want to do this. The reason being that when you make an attack, you have to decide which of your classes you use to add its bonus for that attack (they don't stack!), which then influences how that attack works. For example, the aforementioned Fighter3/Bard4/Fencer3 could make an attack with its Fighter levels (with a +3 class bonus to accuracy from the 3 Fighter levels) while wielding any weapon up to their full strength score. Or it could make an attack with its Fencer levels (with a +3 class bonus to accuracy from 3 Fencer levels) while *halving its strength score* (rounding up) for the purpose of determining which weapons it can wield, but increasing critical chance in return. Since the class levels don't stack for checks and the different restrictions/bonuses don't mesh well inside the Warrior group of classes, you usually don't want to be leveling more than one Warrior-type class.
I appreciate that the system goes out of its way to make sure you understand all of the rules. After having to look through *THREE GURPS BOOKS* to figure out how to make potions I can officially say, I will never take clarity for granted.
Once I started playing Sword World I saw no point in returning to D&D. The art style helps too. I haven’t seen the home brewing limits. Haven’t tried it. Also nice that you used Record of Lodoss War music at the end 👍
Japan is addicted to the d6 since back during DNDs import to Japan finding polyhedral dice beyond the d6 was uncommon. You had to buy the name brand DND dice and those were limited. Basically sword world was created because TSR forgot to ship more dice.
And the failure of the first launch of dnd in Japan and the businessman that tried to do it. Dnd didn't get translated into Japanese until 1985, so AD&D 2nd Ed. There were ads in dragon looking for translators in 1983.
Also another comment reminded me of the YT channel Guided by cardia they are a great source and are part of the translation effort, and their reviews of so e of the adventures tells you if it can be played solo or not.
My big takeaway from World 2.5 and most of the longer lived JTRPG franchises is that they're often damn fine games that do not react well to the referee doing homebrewing beyond making monsters/items if there is even room for it at all.
To be fair, Group SNE did set aside an entire continent specifically for homebrewing your own countries in one of the supplement books, so it isn't that bad.
And there's also the concept of the Shallow Abysses (read: extra-dimensional dungeons), and Bubble Worlds, which can be pretty much anything in there. There's even a sourcebook out there that goes on about said Bubble Worlds and how they can effect play.
4:05 and then in an upcoming sourcebook, they announced rules for grid combat. Though, there is "Advanced Combat" which is described as not needing a grid, but having a grid helps oddly enough.
Grappler seem like gods punching bag, until you realize that you can get 3 attacks with dual wielding, and while each strike may be less powerful than a big axe swing, but if all your attacks land you will be easily outpacing that big axe hit in terms of damage. On top of that, the access to feats like counter and armor piercer, and you got a class that allows you to tiger drop motherfuckers on their turn, and go full kenshiro on your turn. Consider all of that, and it slowly begins to make a lot of sense why they have so many restrictions placed on them.
Hey, is that Dwarf at the lower left corner of the video Gondo Firebeard from the light novel Overlord? Nice reference considering that Maruyama is a huge Tabletop fan and Overlord is his own unique setting that is an interesting fusion of Dungeons&Dragons and Sword World 1.0 and 2.0.
I wonder if I read the entire books wrong, but the idea I got from reading them is that you don't add bonuses from several classes together, which is why it's pointless to take fighter and fencer levels at the same time. You always take the higher class derived bonus.
That is correct, but I wrote the script and was very proud about it and only realized when making the video that it wasn't . . . great. it is possible, as the Fencer has some Crit Stuff, but generally speaking, don't do what I do.
Excellent video. I do have an inquiry though, as I find it a bit weird your example character's a Fighter and Fencer both, since they mostly do the same thing, outside of Fighter getting free feats at certain levels and having feat access that Fencer doesn't. I figure that would be your rationale for the example character having both?
Depends on the source. But a combination of early descriptions, Rules Cyclopedia Artwork, and . . well Deedlit codified the "Traditional Elf" in their psyche. Similar to how when you say "ELF!" you probably drift to Orlando Bloom with a bow, they drift to others. Which is a pretty good summary of the JTRPG scene in a nutshell. "We looked at X, they looked at Y. The rest is history."
Anon is honestly exaggerating, Grapplers are pretty fucking good all things considered, their equipment limitation don't hold them back that much. You can think of it like this: Fighter has big weapons, and they get their damage from their one big meaty hit per round. Fencer has lighter weapons, and they get their damage by gambling on crits. Grappler has the lightest weapons, and they get their damage from going ORA ORA ORA ORA. While the other warrior type classes can get two, maybe three attacks per round if they went in on it but have to compromise to do it, for Grapplers going machine gun punch boy is just their default setup. Combine with Throws and a bunch of great Grappler support options like Armor Piercer makes them very good. Of course the other classes also have a lot of tricks and options you can pick up, so I'd say they are about on parr. The only real rub is that you will pretty much always be a glass cannon as a grappler, since defense is a stat that is pretty hard to come by for grapplers. You can absolutely go and become a dodge tank though, even if Battle Dancers (introduced in Battle Mastery) ultimately outpace Grapplers in terms of being dodge tanks.
I would be surprised if it will. We don't know the exact numbers of the Goblin Slayer TRPG here in the west, but I have a strange feeling that Sword World itself would die on launch if it released here. "Fantasy Adventure" TTRPGs aren't exactly "Uncommon" here. Combined with the weeb factor, and I think it'd sell among a core audience and very little else. Sad, but common.
One thing I've noticed with a lot of JTRPGs is that they're very tightly designed and play really well if you stick to the book. But the second you start trying to homebrew stuff, they get really wonky. Which I mean... fair play I think people add too much dumb shit to D&D and basically turn it into a completely different, shittier game. It'd be better if people just played different games.
Few things are more beautiful then when fans come out to translate a title for no other reason that the love of it

I know GURPS is generally known as "Generally Unplayable RolePlaying System" but 3 fucking books isn't just excessive, that's just plain awful
"It's a big fluffy dog that wants to smother you, and coral you" ah, so that's why I like it, its my samoyed >_>
There is a new channel called "Guided by Cardia" that's producing video content about Sword World ❤
There is❤ It is created by part of the SW2.X translation team (Auquid and Momo).
Alright, put you in the description. I got 8 minutes to summarize 1300 pages and you have a lot longer to explain the nuances.
@@NotepadAnon Good job on this video 👍

The 2D6 was chosen to reduce randomness and not the lack of polyhedrical dice.
Not sure where this myth came from and how it manages to last so long.
It amazes it took Goblin Slayer for Sword Word to get an official release in the West.
But there is no official release yet :( (Fan translation is pretty great tho)
Praise the algorithm to recommend your video to me. Instantly subbed!
I wonder if I can play this solo....
Also another comment reminded me of the YT channel Guided by cardia they are a great source and are part of the translation effort, and their reviews of so e of the adventures tells you if it can be played solo or not.
You can play some of the pre-made adventures solo, some of them have rules for playing as a group without a GM and for a single PC
Fighter 3 and Fencer 3 oh lawd

Until an official English translation is published, I will definitely throw a few shekels the developer's way.
marcille spotted: video liked 👍 but seriously, really enjoyed the video and the effort you put into your overview. this game cool
I really want to get into JTRPG and I'm already learning the language so this seems like a great system to me.
4:05 and then in an upcoming sourcebook, they announced rules for grid combat. Though, there is "Advanced Combat" which is described as not needing a grid, but having a grid helps oddly enough.
Very useful, and I am loving Goblin Slayer.
This game is really cool.
Evade Elves, gather Runefolk, simple as.

So, Goblin Slayer is Mouse Guard and Sword Word is Burning Wheel.

"Huh, I should have three classes to describe a character and I have to use a secondary for it to be legal . . . I guess I'll choose Fencer!"
okay but why the extra *long* knife ears on Japanese anime/rpg elves?

Strangely, PF went that way too.
why is grappler god's punching bag?
The Grappler has a lot of tricks to use, the issue is that 90% of the gear and OTHER tools say "Sorry, no Grapplers"
Anon is honestly exaggerating, Grapplers are pretty fucking good all things considered, their equipment limitation don't hold them back that much.
