This might be a typical first lock a new picker would try to pick. I take an in depth look at the thought process of picking one of these using the first set of picks I ever owned. This video assumes that the basic theory behind lockpicking is already known.

This was an awesome video. Very informative and helpful. I’m currently working on my challenge lock to become a blue belt. I picked the paclock 90 A pro to get my green/blue done. Still, there is so many lessons these low level belt locks can teach us.

Opened my first lock while watching this. my 4th pin was very high, and 2/3 were very low. so I needed to tension from the top of the keyway to get enough space around 2/3

My Master 140 has 2 spring loaded latches, one at each shackle hole. They fit into notches in the shackle. With a hook pick, I am able to reach both latches through the keyhole, one at a time, and pull each one back. The problem is that I need both latches pulled back simultaneously before the lock will open. I might be able to hold them back using two hook picks, if I can fit two hook picks through the keyhole. However, I found a way to do it with one pick. I poke my hook pick deep into the keyhole and find a spring loaded part. If I am holding the lock with top of the keyway on top, when I lift it up with my hook pick, I am freeing the latch at the bottom. I push until it is free of the shackle. I pull the shackle out and keep pulling on it. This prevents the latch from falling back into the notch. Then I find the spring loaded latch that must be pushed down. When I push it down, the other latch is pulled out of the notch. With both latches free of the notches, the lock opens.
The order in which the latches are pulled from the notches may be important, depending on lock tolerances. For learning, without pulling on the shackle, find both spring loaded latches first and practice moving them. If you can open the lock, practice moving the latch that is visible. With the lock open, the other latch doesn't move more than a small amount, so don't try to practice on it.
It is easier to pull on the lock body with the lock locked to something. If the lock is loose, slip it over a hook that is securely held in place.
You're describing a bypass method. On the American Lock 1100, they added a little plate at the back to stop a similar bypass, but older ones don't have it. You can buy a specialty tool designed to bypass somewhat similar to how you described, it's basically a right angle hook that you stick down the keyway and turn to interact with the locking pawl directly.
@@norlin76 Agreed! This is a bypass method, not picking. However, it is a method of getting the lock open, which only works where the latches are accessible. Apparently, Master Lock's design engineers decided that the second latch would make it too difficult for this method to work, so they didn't do anything to keep tools from reaching the latches.

Can you remember if that tensioner is made by HPC-ESP? I use HPC products mainly in the field and they only list part numbers for their tension tools. I've yet to see in the descriptions dimensions other than the length. They just list them as light tension (which I'm quite sure that's what is in my field kit), medium tension and rigid tension.
Sounds like it could well be. The only info I have is that the pick case says ESP, I did buy them almost 30 years ago via mail order so can't provide much more details :)
@@norlin76 I appreciate the reply. Idk the two could have merged between then and now. It's a bit difficult to get hands on all their individual tools. I like the tensioners that came in my kit I bought a year ago and when I seen that Z tensioners I was like whoa If that's made by HPC I gotta have a couple. I hunted them down but it just lists as a double ended tensioner in either light or medium. I hate ordering Locksmith tools and taking a gamble that different part numbers will mean different widths. I just ordered around 20 picks of different manufacturers so I'm gonna put the tensioners in my cart for the next buy. I got to looking and it's time to buy more cases. I've now got enough tools to warrant separate cases for certain situations

I just started picking. I have 9 different locks here. Couple trailer hitch locks. 5 different master locks. 2 pro source locks and the dead volt lock on my house. I can pick all of them, super easy. I thought I was a master. Then I got this 140 master lock. I can't fucking do it. I've wasted 3 hours sitting here trying to pick it. No way will it open for me. I can't believe it lol
The key I have though, there's a DEEP 3rd pin. It's almost straight through the key
Sounds like your previous locks may have all been standard driver pins where the 140 introduces the spool pin. Only thing I could recommend is looking at a few more videos on spool pins, that could help some.
@Michael Gilchrist yeah, I've finally gotten it. The issue was just the tension. I didn't think I was putting that much tension on it. Turns out I was lol. My hands are all cramped now lol

the 140 i bought to play with has a bitting of lowest, highest, second lowest, second highest from entrance to rear... its surprisingly difficult to pick, that being said I'm holding it in my hand, I don't have a stand
Ahh yes, the bitting you get on a lock can really make a big difference in how hard it is to pick!!!
Stupid question? What is going on when all the pins feel springy??? What do you do then???please help
Either you are not correctly applying tension (eg. the tensioner is caught on the body of the lock), you are not feeling all the pins (ie. perhaps missing one far in back that is binding), or could be mistaking an overset pin as being springy (just gravity acting on that keypin at that point).

You need to screw the clamp on to the knurled end of the stud, if you put the knurled end down into the base it will not be held solid and will wiggle.

What brand microphone are you using on the vise?
It's just a guitar pickup so that spectators can hear the clicks better. Just go on Amazon or similar and search "guitar contact pickup". For my voice audio I use a Zoom H6 recorder.

Nothing about counter rotation? I thought these had spool pins
8:10 I mention the spools, however while picking this particular lock, I did not encounter any spools. It can often be the case that these inexpensive locks aren't keyed up in an optimal manner, and even if they have a spool or two (the 140 doesn't always have spools), they may not even come into play (for example if they're paired with a longer key pin)

@@aurelienyonrac I can't recall the exacts and they may vary from lock to lock, but I am pretty certain it has at least spools (the H shape pins you mention)

What do you mean by "White belt can pick anything" Are you referring to it being a Master Lock (which is a brand, not the master of locks). lpubelts.com shows how we've ranked different locks, from White Belt being the easiest, to Black Belt being the most difficult.
