  • Starting out can be overwhelming, as it’s a major learning curve compared to working as an RN. While many of us felt like experts as RNs, transitioning to a nurse practitioner role can bring insecurities, fears, and imposter syndrome. Let's address these challenges with four key tips.
    1. Give Yourself Grace
Your first year as a nurse practitioner will be overwhelming with new critical thinking skills and learning a different side of medicine. You won't do everything perfectly, and that's okay. Embrace the learning curve and be kind to yourself.
    2. You Know More Than You Think
It might feel like you don’t know anything in your new role, but remember your RN experience. You've built vast clinical and critical thinking skills that will aid you. You graduated from NP school, passed the certification exam, and got licensed, proving you’re qualified. Trust in your knowledge and abilities.
    3. Master the Art of Charting
Charting is a crucial part of our role as nurse practitioners. Many of us learned very little about charting in school. Understanding evaluation and management codes, legal protection, and time management in charting is essential. Check out the Nurse Practitioner Charting School for resources, including a course on how to chart as a new grad, to help you avoid the overwhelm and find a better work-life balance.
    4. Find Support
You’ll need plenty of support in your first year, both clinical and emotional. Have mentors and colleagues you can ask questions. Be aware of resources like continuing education and helpful apps. For emotional support, connect with other new nurse practitioners through groups like the Burned Out Nurse Practitioner Facebook group or the Stop Charting at Home membership. Surround yourself with people who understand and can support you.
If you need more charting help, check out the Nurse Practitioner Charting School for a course specific to new grads. It will help you overcome overwhelm, teach you what and how to chart, and save time to maintain a better work-life balance and avoid burnout.
