  • UPDATE 3 The series has now been concluded with the final entry, Part 7! I want to thank everyone who has taken a look a this video and a huge thank you to all the comments and support!     Just a little something to add to the gameplay I did of this version for my Extra Life stream, I felt like running through the castle as Richter! This footage will be featured in a podcast I was in! I also cut out all the load screens to help have a consistent stream of gameplay! Enjoy everyone!

      I really wish at least Bloody Tears (Richter) and Vampire Killer (Maria) had been included in PSX version.

    Why didnt we get this sprite of richter? His artwork is clearly based on this one. Why did we get his sprite of Rondo of Blood? Does anyone know?

      I think it was added in specifically for this version, much like the additional levels and numerous items not found in the PS1 version, as well as the playable Maria Mode. Why there was never a re-released version on PS1 that included all the content found in the Saturn version is beyond me, but I think it had something to do with the creator looking at the Saturn version as a blight on SotN's Legacy as opposed to it having redeeming qualities.
      I do, however, recall reading at one point that a good chunk of the fanbase, prior to the release of Dracula X Chronicles on PSP, were trying to push for the SotN Remaster to include all the content from this version to get a more "complete" experience, because unless you have the money kicking around for an Action Replay for Saturn (bypasses region locking) and a physical copy of SotN on Saturn, the only way to play it is via emulation (and emulation for Saturn varies in results from my experience using it). So I would take a guess most people in the US have never experienced this version, except die hard fans. Unfortunately even with the attempted push, all we got was the Maria Mode (which is radically different to what it is in the Saturn version, on top of her sprite being far more HD then anything found in the original game, so it looks very out of place imo) in the remaster.
      I honestly would've loved to see the Richter Alt Costume if anything return as a feature, because as you said it is far more akin to his concept art then his Rondo of Blood sprite.

      Daybreaker Rein Thanks for the reply. Only thing that I dont understand is that they went really out of their way to animate the Rondo of Blood sprite. Is has a ton of more animations than the Richter sprite in Rondo of Blood, so they had to draw it instead of copy - paste from Rondo. Im thinking, if you allready have to draw a Richter sprite for your game, why not draw it like the original design? I really dont understand :-)

      I agree. It is definitely strange to not have gone ahead and made his attire on his sprite look more to his artwork, but only to do so in a version unreleased outside of Japan. Not to mention, there was some unused sprite work done of Richter, some of which made it into his character animations in Harmony of Despair like his Spin Kick. It might have been that just for functionality sake they stuck with his old sprite and worked off that, instead of building one from the ground up.

      @@DaybreakerRein I imagine it's because they had to use Rondo Richter in the prologue.
      I imagine they didn't bother with another Sprite because of the budget and time frame. Which is a shame.
      I don't care for his long hair but it is nice to see him match his art.

      Strangely, I just downloaded a Saturn rom and it has Richter's original Rondo sprite...
      weeird.

      Gigantis Yeah I agree. I don't think it would've been hard to do if they went the extra effort to alter his sprite sheet to give him a new outfit.

      Ikr? I don't believe they added it as a selectable track in Dracula X Chronicles which is a super shame. Even if it had just been the alternative tracks not in the PS1 version that were added I would've been okay with that.

    It is funny to realize this outfit is not from the artworks of SoTN as it is slightly different. In this sprite, Richter does not have long hair and his coat is closed. In the artworks, his coat was open and had a white shirt beneath it. This costume looks a LOT like the one he uses in Dracula X Chronicles for the PSP. Maybe they used it for inspiration?

      I can actually see that. It would be a nice little nod to the Saturn version if that was the case. I would only guess it might not be necessarily the case considering how Iga has expressed his disdain for the Saturn version, and I've heard accounts that he when asked about it often times refuses to acknowledge it. But then again, we did get a Maria Mode (albeit imo an inferior version of the mode) in the SOTN remaster in that same collection, so maybe at least for some things Iga was a bit more willing to give credence to.

      The thing is: This is 3 years before that artwork, after Richter defeated Dracula, he was possessed by Shaft, so it matches perfectly with the PSP artwork of the Rondo of Blood remaster! After 3 years of being the master of the castle , and the mischievous personality because of Shaft’s mind control, he looks like that (loosen shirt, coat, messy hair).
      Now that I think about that, they’d needed to do both sprites (the short-haired, and the long-haired ones)!

    So, playing as Richter kind of turns this into a classic Castlevania game, am I correct?

      In a way it does! Enemies from what I've understood have set health values since Richter's attack power never increases since he can't level up like Alucard. He only gains any sort of strength from Health upgrades, which make him more tolerable to damage, so the inverted castle enemies don't immediately kill you. I would say that in my opinion there is enough difference from the Classic CV feel since Richter does have abilities that weren't present in Rondo of Blood like his Uppercut, Sliding Kick, Sonic Dash, and the Item Crash abilities are really powerful (Hydro Storming every boss usually kills them aside from Galamoth). However the backtracking and areas like the Catacombs for example are completely optional, since Richter can reach areas Alucard can't without certain equipment right from the get go at no cost. The only downside would be a lower health pool from lack of health upgrades from bosses, but players better then I can more then likely manage without that I'm sure!

      You have to use a code during character selection to enable his alternate outfit. Press Up and C simultaneously to start the game with that sprite sheet!

    How do you unlock the Richter alternate outfit? I'm running the Saturn game but Richter appears with his original sprite.

      It definitely has its quirks for sure, but I'd have to agree that the PS1 version is overall a more pleasant experience. I think however if a bit more time had been used to work around the Saturn's hardware this version could've potentially been better if it wasn't for the Saturn being so hard to program for. I honestly would love to hear developer insight on how this version came about, and if maybe they were short on time to work out some of the obvious issues like some of the sounds being wrong and the apparent sprite stretching.
