You were the one to introduce me to the Castlevania series Johnny, so it’s amazing to see you speak about the series again after so long. It’s become my favorite game series of all time, if it wasn’t obvious by my channel lol. Your Sonic content was a gateway into a lot of other series now that I think about it, Castlevania being chief among them for me 😂 Can’t wait to see your thoughts on the DS trilogy! The Dominus Collection is nearly perfect (with a few minor issues that aren’t a dealbreaker at all tbh). Fun fact too, in the Japanese version of Belmonts Revenge the Axe sub weapon is actually switched out with the traditional holy cross! Very fun to try on replays.
22:06 You should definitely give the VS DLC a try just to see how much of a love letter it is to the series as a whole, or at very least look up a playthrough online. You can tell that Poncle (the dev of VS) really gave it their all to cram as much representation of the entire franchise as they could (makes a whole lot of sense considering how Castlevania-coded the game is on its own). It makes even Dead Cells' Castlevania DLC blush.
I absolutely adore Belmonts Revenge. It's a game that took me by surprise with the clever platformin, sick looking bosses, and the great sound track. So glad to see you finally reviewing it. Also a fun fact, the Japanese version of belmonts revenge has the cross but replaces the axe. Guess they could only fit two sub weapons.
Guess they felt the fireball made a straight-shot weapon like crosses redundant (though still wicked useful). Ideally itd have all three subs, and I think there's a hack for that.

Honestly, I like the idea of Sonia Belmont as basically an ancient and powerful mage Belmont. I feel like the main reason Sonia was even written out of canon was because she came from a time before Castlevania had a proper timeline and narrative. Correct me if I'm wrong but before her it was Trevor who was considered the first Belmont to face Dracula. Then you have Symphony of the night coming out before this game causing legends to contradict with things such as Dracula's motivation and Alucard being born before Lisa was a thing. Heck Bloodlines arguably made zero sense story wise until Portrait of ruin. This is also why circle of the moon and the N64 games are also noncanon although I'd argue those games would've made sense in the timeline.
@@nightmarearcade2663 It was during Bloodline's development. He likely was at Konami at the time since he worked on Rondo, but it was well before SOTN's eventual success that would put him at the helm.
It's always good to see Johnny doing another Castlevania review. And personally I'd love to see you cover Gunstar Heroes minimally, since that's had an adamant spot on my list of games to check out for years now.
Minor correction about Belmont's Revenge, Johnny. Christopher's whip can only get downgraded by one enemy, the Punaguchi (the muppet-looking monster that spits out bouncing round projectiles). Thankfully, they've been greatly nerfed in the sequel. Fun fact: the Axe subweapon is only in the North American version of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, whereas the Cross is in its place in Dracula Densetsu II, the Japanese version.
If the netflix series ever gets to the story of Leon, Sonia could make a cameo as Leon's wife. Have Leon's friend Vladimir Tepes pine for her but get rejected, setting in resentment towards the Belmont family. He then does his dracula thing and curses the whole bloodline to suffer his wrath for eternity.

The chill vibe of these videos make it so easy for me to just forget about stuff and indulge in the games I love even when I don’t have that much time to play them myself.
Fun fact, this trilogy of games was the last full Happy Video Game Nerd episode before Derek retired the character and rebranded to Stop Skeletons from Fighting.

Absolutely Johnny! I've been wanting you to talk about the Gradius games for a very long time since you often mention the series and the Vic Viper ship over the years. And since you mentioned *Treasure,* you GOTTA talk about the excellent work they did on Gradius V. ❤🔥❤🔥 Also happy to see you both noticed and mention how much older Christopher Belmont is by his second game. Possibly making him the oldest active Belmont to combat Dracula and his forces. If you don't count his descendant Julius during the events of "Aria of Sorrow" onwards. Even then, Christopher seems even older by "Revenge" lol and outright gray. At least Julius still has color in his hair. And lastly I must also add, yeah. Them not adding (despite remixing it) Christopher Belmont's theme "Battle of the Holy" was such a dumb choice. Such an awesome tune with a badass song.
22:07 Vampire Survivors player here, bought the game for the Castlevania DLC. Your friends are right, this game is like crack. It's my 4th most played game on Steam now, please play with caution.
A Castlevania spin-off video would be interesting, but I also think there's merit to looking at some of the different Castlevania fan games, like The Lecarde Chronicles and Castlevania ReVamped. Castlevania Fighter is another good one I'd recommend as well.
There is technically like 3 versions of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge, where we got one version, and Japan and Europe got the other two. The one the US got has the Axe as a subweapon, whereas Japan and Europe got the Cross as a subweapon, and if you wonder where the third version is, it is in the Konami GB Collection Vol. 4 that released in Europe, where it features a remixed color version of the game, though, I'm not sure if the color version contains the Axe or Cross subweapon.
The credits of Belmont's revenge were the only source for Soleiyu's name so for decades that's what he was called, It wouldn't be until the Castlevania Collection that his name would be fixed
Do love when Johnny goes back to Castlevania - in fact I’m probably going to go back and watch some older Castlevania videos now! Interesting games, probably not going to look at them more than this video, but interesting to see what the series looked like on the old Gamebrick
I've been looking forward to this video since you name-dropped Adventure in the Bloodlines video way back when. I have a soft spot for the gameboy games, and I really enjoyed this video. Can't wait for you to tackle Circle of the Moon
I mean, there IS Sepia Belmont. She's from the Bomberman spinoff, Bombergirl and is all sorts of not "canon", but she's cute and wields the Vampire Killer AND a chainsaw. She's also a nun that can hug vampires to death... which is... something...
I think Johnny is stalkingt strictly about the actual series. Sepia is... the corporate OC that you know was designed with something decidedly unholy in mind
Glad you're tackling the handheld 'vanias now Johnny, and yes, 100% I'd love to see your take on shoot 'em ups. You mentioning Radiant Silvergun made me think 'dang, I'd love to see him make a video on that.' So yes please!
Adventure Rebirth is one of my favorite games in the series. That soundtrack is sublime, the levels have just the right pace, and the added key for alternate paths gives it some solid replayability. I also adore that Hard mode not only makes the enemies and fights harder, but will change the levels as well It's criminal that those Rebirth titles are currently lost on the Wiiware with no means of getting them legally. The death of the Wii/Wii U truly was a brutal loss for a lot of quality software...
Lords of Shadow *kinda* made the Belmonts descendants of Dracula? In the first game you play as Gabriel Belmont who at the end decides to become Dracula after being put through the wringer from the events of the game. In this continuity Alucard is actually Trevor Belmont who was the first to go up against Dracula/Gabriel. He lost but Dracula turned him into a vampire upon realizing it was his son he just killed. Simon just kinda exists.
@vanisbadatgames9265 Lords of Shadow is a reimagining that tries to mix as much of the franchise into one story with a beginning and middle and end. It pulls from Akamatsu's games (hence Alucard being Trevor as a vampire since it's closer to the idea in CV3 that Alucard became a vampire from Dracula selling his and Alucard's souls) and IGA's games (Gabriel pulling from Leon Belmont and Mathias Cronquist) and the one-offs (Dracula being who the Belmonts descend from, Cornell, Carmilla being a more important character).
Lords of Shadows sorta did the Dracula/Belmont lineage but in reverse. Dracula was the first Belmont and the rest of the family were his descendants from before becoming Dracula. Not a bad twist IMO
@UnivingIshiro LoS was pretty much trying to make a mix of all the series beforehand for a reimagining that pulled from relevant pop-culture like Lord of the Rings the film. Hence including that angle from Legends.
Ho ho ho. Here we go. And yes. I'm into the idea of you making a video about your favorite shoot em ups. And BTW there's a similar control hack for Belmont's Revenge for anyone curious.
If you're looking for a new Metroidvania game to check out check out Nine Sols. I just started playing it although heard that exploration isn't a huge aspect of the game more the platforming and combat. Tips for the Slogra boss fight in Castlevania 4. Attack him when he isn't blinky. Slogra has invincibility frames everytime he jumps offscreen.
Babe wake up, Johnny uploaded a Castlevania video!
Absolutely Johnny! I've been wanting you to talk about the Gradius games for a very long time since you often mention the series and the Vic Viper ship over the years. And since you mentioned *Treasure,* you GOTTA talk about the excellent work they did on Gradius V. ❤🔥❤🔥
Also happy to see you both noticed and mention how much older Christopher Belmont is by his second game.
Happy Holidays!!! Love your videos, still the best reviewer on the site, easily
Belmonts revenge is the best og gameboy game for me fun fact the Japanese version of the game uses the cross instead of the axe
Finally glad to watch one of your videos again some of the reviews you were doing were gaming I was planning on playing so I wanted to avoid spoilers
Johnny uploading on my birthday is a great present.
Do love when Johnny goes back to Castlevania - in fact I’m probably going to go back and watch some older Castlevania videos now!
Interesting games, probably not going to look at them more than this video, but interesting to see what the series looked like on the old Gamebrick
watching every vid since rondo of blood, always good to see the castlevania love! stay up 🎰⭕️🫀♾
I've been looking forward to this video since you name-dropped Adventure in the Bloodlines video way back when.
I have been waiting for another Castlevania marathon for so long. Love you Johnny!
What a great timing! I just so happened to be doing a Castlevania marathon and I'm currently playing Castlevania: The Adventure
Glad you're tackling the handheld 'vanias now Johnny, and yes, 100% I'd love to see your take on shoot 'em ups. You mentioning Radiant Silvergun made me think 'dang, I'd love to see him make a video on that.' So yes please!
I’m glad your going back to castlevania, I’ve been wanting you to look at these games forever.
Yes!! All the shoot em ups please! I got obsessed with Gradius a few years ago and have loved that genre since arcade days
I beat Belmont's Revenge before I was able to beat Castlevania Adventure. Goes to show how insanely difficult Castlevania Adventure was.
Very good music regardless, so it was a little surprising that Johnny didn’t highlight “Battle of the Holy” or “Death Fair” from Stage 3.
The Harmony of Dissonance dissing wasn’t needed, Johnny…
Johnys got some bad takes at times
I wouldn't exactly call it a bad take. Harmony of Dissonance is arguably the most divisive game in the franchise and for good reason.
Check out the recolor mod by Jonataguitar for harmony of dissonance
I wouldn't say HoD is a bad game. But yeah. Out of the Metroidvania style Castlevania games, it's the weakest one.
Nah, he's got a point =/
These videos are such a comfort thank you so much johnny
Every time Johnny releases a new video it always make me smile :’)
Keep it up & much love to your cat ❤
Loving the occasional character break to talk to the cats and comment on the train. :p
Adventure Rebirth is one of my favorite games in the series. That soundtrack is sublime, the levels have just the right pace, and the added key for alternate paths gives it some solid replayability. I also adore that Hard mode not only makes the enemies and fights harder, but will change the levels as well
It's criminal that those Rebirth titles are currently lost on the Wiiware with no means of getting them legally. The death of the Wii/Wii U truly was a brutal loss for a lot of quality software...
Always good to have an upload from ya, Johnny.
It's fine that you gave us a Castlevania video in December, we also got Nosferatu as a Christmas movie this year.
3:04 yes, this is a great idea
YES!!! Do the shumps as well!
Keep up the awesome work and stay well!!
3:09 I’m pretty sure you can talk about something like Super Ned, and we’ll all tune in.
I'm glad for moment's where the TH-camrs cats show up. Never the focus but a pleasant surprise
Halloween came early
So good to see you talking Castlevania again.
@3:04 Yeah, I’d be down for a Shump marathon. I’ve always been a fan of arcade style shooters.
This was worth putting everything on hold and using company poop time.
Ho ho ho. Here we go. And yes. I'm into the idea of you making a video about your favorite shoot em ups. And BTW there's a similar control hack for Belmont's Revenge for anyone curious.
To paraphrase the Let's Player, Simply Simon: the first game should be called _The Adventure of __-Christopher-__ Chillstopher._
Thanks for getting me into the castlevania series. Loved playing through Harmony of Dissonance, Symphony of the Night, and Lament of Innocence
If you're looking for a new Metroidvania game to check out check out Nine Sols. I just started playing it although heard that exploration isn't a huge aspect of the game more the platforming and combat. But so far I'm loving it especially the art style which is all hand drawn which is something I always love like with Hollow Knight.
