  • It’s not a secret anymore that fake watches are getting harder and harder to spot. But let’s face it, the vast majority of fake watches aren’t being bought by people about to receive a nasty surprise-they’re actively purchased by those looking to get an expensive watch on their wrist for way less than they’d be charged at the boutique. Question is, is it worth it?

      A toaster is a technological marvel that opens up a world of toast. When it comes to luxury toasters, however, especially at the very highest end, there's a lot more emotion at play. It's about meaning, sentiment. It's as much about what the toaster stands for as it is about the toaster itself. A toaster is a connection to our fathers; a commemoration of a significant event; a celebration of achievement. It's also, and remember there's no right or wrong, a badge of honour, a mark of status, a social ranking. A toaster reflects who we are and what we've achieved. A watch, on the other hand, is just a tool for telling the time.

    I love Rolex but the idea of walking into an AD and having a glorified salesman tell me that I don’t deserve a watch I’m willing to pay $10,000 for is not my bag of tea. Oh and then having to go through the gray marker and pay 20 or 30 percent more for the same watch without any manufacturer’s warranty? No, thank you but I pass. I’d rather spend that much in an Omega or a Tag or both. You lost me Rolex, I know you don’t care but you lost me.

    I have always been a watch person. When I was about 21 (1980's) my dad asked me what I wanted for my birthday and I told him a Rolex. He was in no position to buy me one but as a joke he got me one off the street for like $40. it was a gold DateJust. The build quality was not bad the case and bracelet felt cheap as hell but it looked OK. it held time and I constantly got compliments on it. I think I wore that watch for 15 years until the scratches wore off the gold and it just looked too crappy to wear anymore. One thing my dad did since spend some money on back at 1969 was a Seiko Bellmatic. He bought it new from the PX when he was over in Vietnam. I treasure that watch till this day and it still keeps pretty good time but the little bell inside doesn't alarm like it used to for sure.

While I do agree that an expensive watch is not about the time - it is about the love of watches and the accomplishment of getting a great time piece - I felt there was a forced justification for the ridiculous grey market pricing of Rolex. They are the masters of marketing - and they have done unbelievably well - but they have become so exclusionary that it has literally created the rep market due to an audience that 90% of the time - cannot get a watch from them at retail - and will not pay 2-3x the price to get it on the grey market.

      I agree with you, well put. This was a very “basic view” of why someone would by a fake watch, to supplement their “fake life” which is very small minded. I even have a problem with the term “fake”. These are super clones, am almost direct copy of their original counterparts so much so, you can swap nearly each piece with a gen piece such as with the robust VR3135 movement and the JF16610. These are GOOD watches, not simply lesser fakes that should be shunned. I wear a JF because I frankly can not afford a sub, I appreciate and respect it like a $9k (it was $1500) watch and would never tell someone it is real if they asked. My step dad that’s owns multiple gen Rolex’s has a few clones, a 1675 being one of them for obvious reasons. That is a grail watch he hole hearted wants to enjoy and wear but cannot justly the Cost let alone wear it with out constant fear of hitting a door jam... Although superficial Rolex owners may turn their nose to super clones, people who appreciate horological and the beauty of a fine watch will find greater value and appreciate in other ways when considering one of these.

      Rolex creates high quality luxury watches. Creating those kind of watches takes time and effort, and they can't churn them out as fast as something that's mass produced. There is a far greater demand for Rolex than there is a supply. That means you will have to wait for your watch to be made. Some people don't have that patience, and want to buy it right now. That's where the gray market comes in. People with no interest in these watches order them with the AD, and when they arrive, sell them for a profit. The market dictates how high they can up their prices. If it doesn't sell for the asking price, the price will come down.

    • @pignosis354
      @pignosis354 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don’t pay grey market Rolex prices…..just waitlist…. At literally every near AD, I’ve gotten the watches I desired quickly (relative to Rolex) and if a different location calls you after you received your watch, you can simply say “I’m no longer interested “. Also, just pop in and say hi every 2-3 weeks. The waitlist is not chronological….if it’s been 3 months, you’re not getting the watch from that dealer because they’ve already forgotten you exist and you might as well re add yourself with a different sales rep. That’s just from my experience anyways. Good luck to you!.

    While I have not bought a fake Rolex (yet), I can definitely say I am on the fence to doing so. Before any accusations of not being able to afford one, I can honestly say that it is not strictly a financial limitation, per se. I have been in the position to buying my first Rolex for well over a year now. I started with wanting a Sub, then Explorer II (polar), then even lowered my standards to a OP36/39. I have been put on a "wait list" to which I have never been contacted. I am on the wait list for all the Rolex ADs in two cities and almost 2 years later, no call. I refuse to pay a premium in the used market for a Rolex just because some guy has had a higher spend history/connection with a particular AD. I won't play that game with Rolex and their AD network. It's a watch at the end of the day and Rolex is not the only brand that makes quality watches. I have since bought numerous Grand Seikos, Omegas, Tudors, etc. Rolex? No call.
    I'll buy a Rolex because I like the designs of a few models but since the company has made it virtually impossible to buy through official channels, and I don't agree with perpetuating the cancerous cycle of Rolex flippers, I am considering to buy a Rolex rep. I won't lie if someone asks if it's a fake. I'll happily explain that Rolex does not respect the actual watch enthusiasts and that they have purposely created a system where you have to earn your right to be their customer. Disgusting...but nice designs. So yeah, I'll give $500 to a Chinese factory that will release me from this Rolex fix.

    As a former watchmaker at Rolex I gotta say: given that Rolex movements are so unbelievably simple that it is almost a miracle people are still buying them instead of something at least a little of a challenge when it comes to putting it together, I do fully understand that someone would go for the fake whose movement is probably even more complicated than the one of the real Rolex. As a watchmaker I understand that simplicity (when it comes to movements) can be desirable (e.g. in using very few parts) but I would argue that that is only the fact when a brand is really pushing it. If a watchmaker is searching for smart ideas to use less parts in a movement, that‘s a watchmaking skill. Because by simple I do not only mean the amounts of parts used or the complexity of the movement, I also mean the amout of thought that had to be put behind developing it, and the complexity of the idea. A movement with extremely few parts has probably an uncountable amount of thought behind it and is therefore not at all simple. If everything about a movement is „standard“ in a sense that it is just a copy of the usual ways the movement works, then there‘s not thought put behind the movement and therefore it‘s complexity vanishes, no matter how many parts are used.

    • @PM-gt9mh
      @PM-gt9mh 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Don‘t get me wrong, „standard“ movements are just fine, ETA and sellita are making great standard movements, and so is Rolex. That remains to the true „watchmakers“ like Journe, De Bethune and so on... you know the names

    Over the years , I have collected 40+ watches. Most are cheap beaters when I was much younger , some are vintage ones that I have inherited. Some are strange and quirky .
    3 are respectable formidable authentic automatic Swiss watches all purchased at boutiques with boxes and papers .
    But 1 is a fake . About 17 years ago I bought a fake Daytona , and at the time I was much younger , dumber and wanted to achieve a fake sense of prestige to impress friends , so I wore it a lot. As I grew and started to appreciate watches more , I realized how ridiculous it is to own and especially to flaunt a fake . But yet I can't get myself to get rid of my fake Daytona . It is pretty , it still runs nice , and it does its job correctly. It tells the time ! Plus it holds a value of nostalgia to me (The chronograph aspect of it is flawed but thats another story)
    Anyway , I almost NEVER wear this watch. It sits in the closet collecting dust most of the time .
    But I have recently decided that my fake Rolex Daytona will be allowed to make appearances one day and one day only out of the year..... HALLOWEEN ! The day that I may dress up in a costume with my son to go trick or treating, or go some sort of costume party with friends and colleagues . It becomes part of a made up identity for one day and one day only .

    I understand to an extent the argument about why a fake watch would always be a fake to the owner even if it gives the impression of being genuine to an unknown observer. I don't agree that the statement around success projected or essence of the watch being worn is any different between fake and genuine. A significant portion of people who own luxury products have bought it on finance which is debt and not really an indicator of one's success, but ones ability to bear risk and priorities luxury over necessity. They may have inherited the watch it been gifted it. Again, not signs of success but privilege. To the owner they know they didn't earn this great piece on their arm, they got it because they're parents or family are wealthy and would have been wealthy whether the owner existed or not. Plenty of those who own luxury products are insecure and unhappy. The products ultimately give them a very abstract and fragile sense of happiness. The essence that the commentator speaks about is only real in the mind of the beholder. But that realness is a subjective truth. For example, I purchased my Rolex from Harrods in cash. It was a very straightforward and transactional process involves a Datejust owned by millions of other people. Rolex didn't give me any sense or unimaginable essence that somehow connected me to my success or my watch through the transaction. I would argue that an individual with $500-600 dollars (which is their fortune) who has to research and navigate a complex web of information, mis-information, dealers and quality control checks to purchase a replica of very high standards actually loves and knows more about the watch than a lot of the genuine owners. This love and passion as well as a sense of achievement when the item arrives as expected probably fills the person with as much joy, satisfaction and an essence valid to that owner. An essence, I as a genuine owner have not and probably will not experience. The fake and genuine have value and sentimentality to both owners, I assume. Value is relative and essence comes from emotions. Is my sense of essence about my roles more genuine or valid than someone who's lovingly bought a fake Datejust? I'm not sure.

    I've never bought a fake. I own a few homages and I love them dearly, because I can take solace in one simple truth: Nearly nobody cares what watch I'm wearing. They don't know the difference between a Daytona and a Date-Just and they likely don't understand how hard it is to buy a Rolex, since the brand is so engrained in pop culture. The most you'll get is "oh cool Rolex." For me the true greatness of watches is that it democratizes public art. We might scoff at a 3 million dollar supercar that will never see the light of day, but we light up at the idea of a million dollar JLC because when the owner wears it, everyone gets to see it and appreciate it. Now when a manufacturer's structure makes normal the act of snatching up and hoarding, it's not unethical to want to return that magic to the public sphere where it belongs. But again, if you're wearing a watch so people will notice it, you probably would be better off with a Daniel Wellington or some monstrosity like it.

      Paul UK So in order for me to buy this watch I have to pop in a few times to say hello to ensure my genuine personality and then beg that I’m put in a waiting list, while I’m at it I may as well bow down and start worshiping the glorified sales people. You were lucky with 5-6 months. I’ve been told to wait 2yesrs+ .. life is short and I could’ve spent that 2 years with a watch like my Tudor blackbay and enjoying it taking it alongside me with the adventures I’ve had in that 2 years.
      Sounds ridiculous to me. I could walk into an Omega store and buy whatever I want. This is why watch people don’t like Rolex, it’s the hype beast supreme of the watches.

    • @pauluk2109
      @pauluk2109 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Ess hi mate, unfortunately yeah and the reason is they want to know you’re a genuine buyer and not going to flip it. These watches, especially the super rare like the hulk are worth thousands more on the grey market so if they were easy to get anyone could just put their name down on the list at 20 AD’s and make £30k - £40k in the space of a few weeks. I was also told 2 years but I think I was lucky as it was just after Christmas when they rang me and the people above me on the list probably were short of money at the time. These dealers have at least 10 people adding themselves to the lists every day and most are time wasters or people looking to flip the watch and make a quick £2k. It’s not perfect but I don’t see how else they could do it considering the crazy demand for Rolexes. I’m not too proud to go in and chat to the staff and create a rapport with them, I’ll probably be going back to get one for my fiancé when she decides which design she likes.

      @t c I live in London, there are no family run AD's, it's all big business and very transparent, they will basically tell you to your face that there other customers that they want to wait for before you. I purchased an Air King to get on to the waiting list for a GMT Pepsi, I was told 1 year later that I'd need to purchase a couple more watches before being considered. This was Watches of Switzerland.

    • @numberstation
      @numberstation 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      t c To increase profits, why else? The model is simple. First, rigorously control who sells your product, and ensure discounts are kept to a minimum. Then, slowly reduce the amount of product available, target wealthier buyers for actual sales, and try to piggyback less popular models onto those sales. The result is increased desirability due to artificially created rarity and a shift towards more “upmarket” clientele, a stranglehold on prices both new and used (this process has driven used prices through the roof, which in turn makes new sales more likely as the gap is so small and value retention is high) and also means increased profit margin as the product has a buyer before it’s even made.
      Increased desirability.
      Increased control of product leading to increased profit.
      Decreased wastage from overproduction.
      All very good for Rolex, and maybe for existing Rolex owners too in terms of money invested. But if people can’t see they’re being played like fish then more fool them. There’s no point crying because you can’t get your Rolex, if you keep bending over Rolex will keep fucking you. Rolex customers have themselves to blame for allowing this situation to happen.

    Here's a few signs of the GMT being a fake.
    1- On the rehaut, the letters forming ROLEX should match exactly with the minute markers on the dial, moreover, each X in ROLEX should match with each hour marker on the right side and the R should match with the hour markers on the left side.
    2- The bezel should be perfectly symmetrical, you can see that while at the 3 o clock position the red and the blue match up pretty well. On the opposite side the blue and red are coming together much higher than they should, the red side is essentially bigger.
    3- The center of the pinion where the second hand attaches is poorly polished.
    4- The rectangular indices on the dial have sloppy corners and aren't perfectly squared off.
    Just a few of the ones I spotted in one pass of the video...

    I have a fake Rolex, as well as 3 other real Rolexes. The reason i bought it was that i saw a picture online of something i'd never seen anywhere, it looked like a modern ceramic sub, but with the submariner text in red, and it had hands that looked like those on a datejust. After some research i discovered that it was a fake, apparently the company that made them just decided to throw a bunch of random parts together and sell it. Anyway, i loved the design so i bought one, expecting the quality to be really bad, but when i received it i was pleasantly surprised. Its really quite nice, and i wear it in rotation with my other watches. I do like it a lot even though its a fake, and i wish Rolex would come out with a similar design.
