    Two extra wins:
    - the reason for the "lots of guns" for the foyer gunfight was to avoid reloading. Neo and Trinity always drop an empty gun and grab a new one instead.
    - the way the agents fight. Their moves are simple (punch, kick, shoot, block, dodge, 1 kind of each), but it's effective because they can do it faster than human beings, which is similar to how computers function (simple calculations done extremely fast)

    Neo: “That’s why it’s going to work.”
    He IS the smart guy here.
    This is a “Zero Day Exploit”, a common thing that any hacker would know. A hole in the security that has never been patched is repaired for “Zero Days” and the knowledge that no one has ever done that is proof it can be exploited and attacked.
    The knowledge that no one has attempted this before is all he needs to know to know that the plan can succeed. It’s a subtle nod to his hacker roots, and his understanding of how the agents think.

    The reason Trinity flipping looks wonky is that she twisted her ankle while rehearsing the flip day of the shoot. That meant they had to film it in two shots instead of one fluid motion. She was devastated about it because she wanted it to look as good as possible. This is in the BTS. Also, Neo looking wonky while doing the backflip in the dojo is Keanu using the wires attached to his hips to propel himself backwards. That’s why it looks off. He does it again after flipping away from Smith in the subway.

    Your cheat code comparison is interesting. There's an arc in The Matrix Online that involved operatives getting their hands on unstable obsolete Agent upgrades colloquially called "cheat codes" that gave them comic book style superpowers. It was not a particularly liked arc, to put it mildly. But the idea is baked into the lore, either way.

    • @starschwar
      @starschwar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@sekoia2812 Thank you. As I said they were "obsolete" upgrades. The Agents stopped using them because they were too attention-grabbing. So flashy that they caused more people to awaken, rather than containing the problem. That's why they were retired, and Agents went to the traditional tactics we see - the G-Men rather than super villains.
      An exile, a Sentinel commander called The General stole the Cheat Codes and gave them to Niobe who was hell-bent on revenge at the time, hoping the chaos that would have ensued would have restarted the war and given him renewed purpose. One of Niobe's followers, Anome, stole the codes and went on an insane rampage. Zion had been awakening a lot of sociopaths, evidently.
      Of special note: When the Agents finally disposed of the codes in the manner in which the Oracle instructed them, Seraph was exposed. He went a little berserk, but for good purpose - revealing a dark secret that the Machines had been hiding from the awakened community since the start of the truce.
      But that is an even longer story.

When the LOTR movies came out, I had the hardest time wrapping my mind around the fact that Hugo Weaving was in *both* franchises, the two characters were so different. I think the only thing they had in common is that they walked with authority and you knew that if you were smart, you wouldn't want to mess with either of them, but one worked for darkness and the other for light, two heads of the same coin.

    This is why I love you so much more then CinemaSins. Whereas CinemaSins just wastes our time making a bunch of completely meaningless (and often wrong) nitpicks and cringy sex jokes, you actually make deep observations that require a keen eye and critical thinking to acknowledge. Especially in your conclusions segments. Plus you're 100x funnier. Hell, even when the movie makes a genuine goof or mistake you actually manage to make either a good explanation or just lampoon it in a way that's genuinely funnier then whatever CinemaSins can ever think of. In this age of overly cynical and nitpicky internet movie critics, I am so happy to have people like you around who'd rather spread positivity for positivity's sake.

CinemaSins, on the other hand, removes a sin when something is good, then adds one or two back immediately for some other tiny detail, nitpick, or personal opinion/arbitrary "I don't like this movie" reason. It's personally one of the most annoying things about CinemaSins. Whenever you think "Oh, so this moment was good?" they undo that feeling with "However, I don't like ______, so two more Sins just for good measure". CinemaWins always has legitimate Wins on the board, even if those Wins are just "Damn this is freaking COOL!!!" because we live for those moments. Of course they're Wins. Worth noting about 90s ennui that a lot of it was actually heavily driven by the working class. Grunge music, for example, was not a product of middle-class folks in comfortable suburbs. Wages had been stagnating since the 70s, and people were increasingly aware of social stratification and the harmful impacts of capitalism. The idea that the future was bleak and that people could not expect a higher or even equal standard of living to their parents, no matter what they did, was beginning to dawn, along with the increasing awareness of how dehumanizing and alienating office work tends to be.
    The thing that makes 90s ennui into ennui, and not anything else, is that people genuinely had no idea how to react to it. They couldn't imagine alternatives, in part because of how successful the War on Drugs had been in eliminating leaders of social movements that proposed them. Capitalist realism reached a cultural hegemony. Add in a growing consciousness of environmental degradation, it's no wonder people felt miserable.
    I'm not going to argue that 90s ennui wasn't heavily focused on white people, with a particular catering to white men, but treating it somewhat tritely as privileged and wealthy white folks moping about how being privileged, wealthy, and white doesn't solve *all* your problems is selling short a kind of unconscious awareness of a whole generation that the world was broken and they had no idea how to fix it.

    • @RaptorNX01
      @RaptorNX01 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      plus it was into the 90's that the traditional "family" view started to really hit the breaking point. With the wealth gap ballooning and the wage stagnation and inflation pushing more into poverty who previously would have been middle class, the idea of single income homes was becoming more and more of a pipe dream. throwing that wrench in the cogs of a society with near terminally strict gender roles is going to cause issues.

      Here it is, thank you. The same depressing mindset was gaining the rest of the world and still is growing in some places. Just for the sake of variety I can tell you about France (my country) where the 90's depression feeling (that you called "ennui" in the US apparently) has only kept growing since then. A feeling of powerlessness against an ever worsening general situation. The desire to revolt and fight but with no ennemy to face now the communists were gone and the Germans are our friends, this only left us with either two options : the entire society was wrong or we as individuals are, and both are a sickening feeling.
      This feeling of being trapped does not hit the wealthiest and most privileged first, I mean just to take music, the most representative group of 90's revolt was NTM ("nique ta mère", translating to "f*ck your mom"), whose members were inhabitants of the poor Marseille neighbourhoods all 2nd generation Maghreb immigrants. Not exactly white priviledge here.
      So the Matrix blew our minds too, not only here the problem was not us but the system, but the self insert (Neo) actually managed to fight back, which seemed impossible to all of us ! Oh, and there is the cool factor, because, yeah.

    Your point about the philosophical messages being deep but the story still being easy to follow is one of the reasons I think The Matrix holds up not just as a great film but also as an immensely profound one. I had this conversation with an old coworker comparing Tenet and The Matrix. Both are "smart" movies but The Matrix is smart in the sense that it could be dissected and understood as something more, yet you never have to do that. You can just sit back and appreciate the cool visuals and fun story and nothing else. Tenet, on the other hand, tried to beat you over the head with how smart it was. And although I enjoyed Tenet, it ended up being for everything except its intellectual components, whereas The Matrix still works on all of its levels.

      I actually have a funny anecdote about Tenet, because I liked it the first time I watched it and _thought_ that I understood it right away, and I know a few people that had a similar experience...
      But lo and behold, a couple months later, a podcast host I follow who absolutely hated the movie to the point of deriding it as a POS changed his mind after rewatching the movie several times and proceeded to explain the movie to their podcast co-hosts (which was more or less the same as Lee's explanation)...
      As it turns out, people who thought the same as me did NOT even really understand the logistics of the movie's plot in the first place...

    The one question I've always wanted to ask is when Smith refers to humanity as a virus, doesn't that mean that the machines are analogous to parasites that feed off the energy of the viruses that Smith dispises so much?
    As for the trans interpretation... I'm glad it helps some folks in ways that give me a broader view of the movie in the process. Every good story will always mean different things to different people and anyone that thinks they've cornered the market on the truth of something for everyone, that attitude officially passes into loudmouth noise, for me.

      I find the "humans=batteries" thing makes more sense if you think in terms of economics instead of literal electric batteries: from the standpoint of this system, we all primarily exist to grow up and get a job were we spend most of our time working to create the economic productivity that keeps the system running, and as soon as we cease to produce more than it takes to keep us around, we get discarded.

      The trans allegory becomes a lot clearer (and harder to argue) when you understand that the Wachowski sisters came out as trans a little after this franchise dropped. Whether or not it was intentional at the time of production, I can say from experience (as a trans writer) that the experience is so fundamental, allegory tends to work its way into everything I do, whether I mean for it to or not. Besides which, the "kill the old self; resurrect the new self" story isn't exclusive to trans people, so of course this movie can have a lot of different interpretations. Art is as much about the viewer as the creator; the reason it sticks with people is because it resonates with what's already there.

When you're a little kid, you just wished you could bend the elements and defeat the evil firelord, but as you get older and rewatch it, you find all the nuggets of wisdom the creators put in the show without anyone demanding that from them: lessons on life, love, loss, self-imposed hurdles, destiny, balance, understanding others. Neo can do anything now (obviously before parts 2 and 3) - he can literally bend the world as you perceive it to his will, but he won't...because that's for you, the audience and the people who populate the Matrix to decide . Do you want to live as part of the machine, never knowing more but leading a relatively straight forward life, or do you want to rise up, break the machine and take the new life offered to you, even if its hard? And that's why RATM hit so hard when the credits role. But that was just what I felt at the time, my take away thoughts from the very first time I watched it. :)

    In my mind, it was Agent Smith blaming her for killing them when she just knocked them out, but the Agents killed them to cover up the crazy leather clad super woman who kicked their asses. Agents can’t afford to let any hints or evidence of the Matrix get out.
    So when he says “your officers are already dead” he means that they’re no longer allowed to live because they witnessed Trinity do her thing. I don’t think they just murder indiscriminately… the guys at the Agent building are also programs, so not alive. They only kill when they need to and incapacitate everyone else.

    Okay, since you briefly brought it up. The whole trans allegory is, like the film itself, deeper than just the surface level. Personally I always saw the film as an allegory for being who you really are, realising your true self/potential and whatnot, which definitely includes transitioning.
    That's what makes The Matrix unique for me, all these different people with different perspectives all coming up with their own theories on what the movie can mean. Everyone has their own ideas and headcanons and so on, it's fun to discuss it and see what everyone takes away from the movie. That's why I feel it's managed to stay relevant even after all this time.

      This is a really nice way to put it, I also can understand why people were initially frustrated as they saw their own journey (trans or not) in the film. Someone saying "its actually about being trans" feels at first like they're removing your link to the arc, which is at the heart of why monomythic films are so powerful. But in a way all movies that even loosely fit the heros journey could be considered movies about change, and by extension a trans allegory.
      Don't really have a point to make, just thought it was interesting is all!

      I must admit, there's a few lines and moments in the film that make me a little worried if as the Directors say it was always a trans allegory, because as CinemaWins points out in part 1 they are terrorists, but within the context of the film it's justified by the Matrix being a fake reality forced upon them with an active force hunting them down that they are at war with. And that in turns make them regard everyone not explicitly an Agent as a potential Agent so they gun them down without remorse or guilt.
      I don't want to regard trans people as enemies, I feel dreadful that they face so many challenges and torments in our society that they do, but if the Matrix has any accuracy as an allegory for trans, then I'm forced to.

      @flibberfrogman5508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @SorcererOne Just to clarify, they have since said that the trans allegory was intentional. But yes, nothing in this film represents just one theme or idea. The trans allegory is pretty on the nose except for the fact that most people aren't familiar with the subject enough to see most of it.

    • @flibberfrogman5508
      @flibberfrogman5508 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@RandomCarrot2806 The trans allegory was in a lot of things but it was not in the "run up walls and shoot everyone" bits. Trans people cannot deflect bullets at you, you're safe.
      More seriously, the agents and the way anyone can become one are, among other things, representations of how people can suddenly become hostile if they realise or suspect you're trans. The fighting against them is representative of self-defence against violent bigots.
      You say if the allegory's accurate then trans people are your enemy, but unless you think the allegory part means trans people are just gunning down passers by in the streets it sounds like you'd rather side with the people who'd try and murder people for being trans through inaction than accept that violence in self-defence is justified.

    Well, Blue + Yellow = Green. So could it be Noobs from the blue real world + guidance and training in the yellow simulation = Green Matrix-ready?
    Also, about the red touches: Red is the exact opposite of green on the color wheel - and thus its perfect complementary color.

    Thing about the Agent 'deadnaming' Neo is that they also did that to Cypher, calling him "Mr. Reagan". I like to think it's because they're the Matrix's enforcers of "how things should be", so said "how things should be" is baked directly into their code - in this case, people's "intended" identities in the Matrix. Smith is hardcoded to be unable to see Neo as anything other than "Mr. Anderson", because him being anything other than "Mr. Anderson" is, from the Matrix's perspective, an error that requires rectifying.

    Y'know if you think about it, The Matrix is the only franchise that can recast characters and have it make sense. They're programs after all, so why wouldn't a character like the Oracle be able to simply change what she looks like on a whim?

    • @Vitosi4ek1
      @Vitosi4ek1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    So, I don't know if I'm reading too much into this but in Lana Wachowski's HRC Visibility Award acceptance speech (th-cam.com/video/crHHycz7T_c/w-d-xo.html) she talks about a time she almost committed suicide by jumping in front of a subway train but didn't because she saw an old man walking down a ramp and staring at her. The scene where Neo is about to leave the Matrix but a hobo turns into Agent Smith feels oddly similar to that. I also don't think it's a coincidence that the fight with Smith starts in a subway station and Smith is run over by a subway train.
