Uh, when matrix started a flip phone wouldn't connect to internet...
So where the hell was this going? Neo plugs into the machine world
The train station scene with the family is them trying to reach the Frenchman before the matrix trashes the machine that unplugged neo...

You know what I thought of while watching this movie? Speed Racer. Yeah, Wachowski production aside, something that strikes me about both Speed Racer and Matrix 4 is that they are so genuine it almost hurts. The Matrix 4 spends nearly a third of its runtime outright bullying the people who thought they knew what The Matrix was about, and Lana tears down each layer unapologetically until we get to what it's really been all along: a love story. Neo and Trinity. Trinity and Neo. There's no subtlety or second-guessing, this movie knows what it's about and will beat you over the head until you get it. Love conquers all.
I'm a bit sad you skipped over the scene where Bugs tells Neo how much his story meant to her because that's really Lana's manifesto laid bare, but it could still be in part 2, right? ...right?

I’ve been waiting to come back to this movie. First time I saw it in theaters it didn’t grab me. I was actually kind of sad about it. But I had a feeling I’d have the same reaction to this movie that I had to Hot Fuzz. It was the last of the Cornetto trilogy that I had seen and on my first watch I outright didn’t like it, but as time went on and I saw it more and more it slowly became my favorite. I don’t think this movie is going to top the first Matrix for me, but it is better than I originally gave it credit

Honestly, I thought this movie was pretty good. Not great, but not bad either, just good. It really tells how time has gone by between the second and third movies (given that they were done back to back) and this one. Also, it just so happens that you uploaded a video the same day CinemaSins did. I don’t think that’s happened before, but here we are. Keep up the good work as always, Lee!

Many people went into this movie expecting to feel like it was 1999 again but the movie went out of its way to say "Nope, that's not what this is about. We're done here. Peace."

I think this movie gets way more hate than it deserves. Is it as good as the 1st movie, no I'd put it on par with the 3rd movie. That being said I loved Yahya Abdul-Mateen as Morpheus, Jonathan Groff as Smith, and Neil Patrick Harris as The Analyst.

The one thing I really liked about this movie is that it felt like a breath of fresh air. So many movies nowadays try to use nostalgia to make people like them, and in doing so, people get angry at said movies. But Matrix: Resurrections felt like it’s the only one to say “remembering things is okay.”

  • @judeannethecandorchannel2153
    @judeannethecandorchannel2153 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, OKAY!--I GET IT, there was the Warner Brothers "they're forcing us to make a sequel!" Meta gag / gripe in the movie.
But that complaint doesn't Define The Whole MOVIE.
People who think that Lana and Keanu and Cary Ann Moss would deliberately crap💩 on their legacy don't understand artists.
They might complain--but they will rise to the occasion!
And I think they made a perfectly great, witty, nostalgic yet refreshed, forlorn film about middle aged Trinity and Neo, still trapped in the world of the unreal…and how they once again triumph.

I really really loved the 4th movie, but one thing i think that would've made it even better and more mind blowing is if they actually switched the color coding. We already associated blue with submission and control, but If NPH had red frames on his glasses instead of blue and was prescribing red pills, It would've totally threw us off and blow my mind away. It would also show the AI and the system adapting to the changing conditions, trying to outsmart the humans.

I loved this movie when it came out, and I began to feel bad about it because of other people's opinions but looking in the comments, I am glad to still love this movie; it was a meta capstone on the series which salts the earth so much that not even remaking the series will work.
This movie does not want there to be a sequel or reboot, and talks about itself and frames it as the most annoying thing ever. It was akin to God creating a burrito so hot and heavy that He Himself could not eat it. This movie ironies itself to death out of spite. Meanwhile also telling a love story that is almost Regency-esque with the star-crossed lovers angle mixed with second chance. It is the fried peanut butter banana sandwich of movies, in that you already have to have a very weird palate to find it enjoyable.

this movies plot could have worked if fake morpheus was actually a person and audience insert, basically the new "Neo". They find him living in a hidden portion of the new matrix and subtly being trained as the next morpheus when bugs frees him. Neo is basically Luke from the Last Jedi, but they rescue him, he's uber powerful but weaker because his power is split with trinity, and the movie plays out the same but with new morpheus having actual stakes and growing from weak to strong. maybe cuz im black but I genuinely enjoyed the new morpheus character and would have enjoyed the role reversal with Neo training "morpheus" but nah hardly any screen time at all tbh and AI so not really clear on what even his story is

Hey! I bet you'll talk about this in the conclusion, but one of my favorite things about this Matrix is how the relationship with our online presence has changed since original Matrix. In the 90's, the internet is something you login to, you have avatars that you make and the way in and out of the matrix was the phone lines, hence the phone booths. In Resurrection, the way in and out is a mirror, because the internet is no longer something you login to, but now a reflection of your life and what you choose to have the world see.

Plus, the Wachowski Sisters are both trans. I can say from personal experience that being trans makes you have a weird relationship with both phone calls and mirrors. There's a ton of stuff in the 1st and 4th movies that reference transness: blue was the color of antidepressants, and red was the color of estrogen pills. They wanted Switch to be played by different actors- a woman in the Matrix, and a man in the solid world- a show of how "residual self image" (what we feel is our true selves), is not always the same as what nature gives us to work with.
Mirrors are very strange when you're trans: there's a sort of unreal reality. I always saw a middle-aged man in bad drag in the mirror when I was trying desperately to be a girl in HS. If I separated the image from myself, I could tell that she looked pretty enough... I'd probably date her. But when I saw her as _me,_ she was unbearably ugly.
What I saw in the mirror was not what everyone else saw... I mean that in a non-literal sense. And I knew that- I knew that no one else saw a middle aged man in bad drag when they looked at me, but I couldn't un-see it. It's like my brain was trying to force me to get a glimpse of reality. It was screaming at me, shaking me, shouting: "YOU ARE A GUY, YOU MORON!" But I was too stuck in trying to be the girl I was told I was.
I've heard my transfemme friends talk about how they see themselves more and more in the mirror as they continue HRT. After cutting my hair, I kept getting tiny glimpses of the person I really am. It feels a bit like how the water glitches into code in the movie. You can kind of see it and then it's gone again. I think the Wachowski Sisters are farther along in their transition than I am. For them, it's the memory of their unreality that they can sometimes still see. But now that they've transitioned, the mirror reflects reality.
I'm starting on T this coming month. I don't expect it to work over night, but I imagine the person in the mirror will start to feel more and more real.

I ❤ having Chad Stahelski in as""Tiff"'s husband!
There's the obvious connection with the first series, and the extra meta that the Matrix gave her a "lesser" version of Neo, his "double."
And I'm betting "Chad" was his name in the script before getting Stahelski (see Urban Dictionary)
I know there's a Part 2 coming, but I have to say, much as it was great seeing Keanu back, watching Carrie Anne Moss in action again, and I MEAN IN ACTION was worth the price of admission.
STILL wanna see the story of Trinity, a underground legend hacker and a fighter better than Morpheus, and nearly as well-known.

Felt all the self referentals and reasons for recasts and re-use of characters and themes and plots made the film a pale shadow off itself. Remided me of 'The force awakens'. Like there was a reason they originaly parroted the first starwars, which would have made sense in later movies, but it was a the detriment of the film itself.
For me, the most interesting part of the film was when they said that the machines had a civil war over resourses, and i thought 'oh, this is getting interesting. tell me more', then they never mention it again. Like, did they get some humans on the machines side. Is Neils character one of them? They let him run the matrix because hes human and thinks like humans? Are there more factions beyond human/machines/Io.
IDK, to be honest the film introduces so many interesting characters and stuff, but doesnt do anything with them. I feel like they were banking on my nostalgia to make the film work. Like had i never seen the original trilogy, would I have enjoyed it? I didnt LOVE the 2nd and 3rd of the original trilogy, but i recognised them as good films. But i didnt on this one.

  • @Undy1
    @Undy1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The main problem I have with Matrix 4 is that it seems it was made purely out of spite. If we're to believe the meta references in the movie itself, it would seem the studio wanted to make Matrix 4 'with or without' the people that made the trilogy. And so it seems that those people, mainly Lana only accepted out of spite and made sure they would never make another Matrix again by making a movie that hates it's own existence. Which okay, bold move, but that doesn't make the movie automatically good just because it's so 'self aware'.
And as much as I don't like pointless reboots and forced sequels just imagine what this movie could've been if it landed in the hands of some director and crew who were actually excited to make another Matrix movie. And believe me there's so many people in Hollywood who would love to make anything Matrix related and would make a hell of a good job too.
But we got what we got and IMO it's inferior to the trilogy in so many ways. (And to be honest I am one of those people that think The Matrix should've ended on movie 1 as that was a complete story).
So about those inferior things - the fights. I just cannot fathom how a sequel to The Matrix which is still regarded for having one the best choreographed and filmed fight scenes in cinema history, could drop the ball so hard 22 years later. The technology in that time has improved so much, we can now do things they could only dream back then, and yet the fight scenes are just objectively worse, full of cuts, pulling hits and filmed mostly in extreme closeup and with shakycam adding to the confusion.
Neo vs Morpheus and Neo vs Smith are two scenes which heavily reference the same match-ups from the first movie, but come off as nothing more than cheap imitations. You can say it's because the actors got older (well that would only apply to Keanu as the other two actors are younger) but then you look at John Wick and you can see that Keanu still got it. And if he didn't, well there are ways around it nowadays with CG doubles that when done right can look indistinguishable from the real thing.
Sadly the CG in this movie is not very good either. In fact there are some inexcusably bad effects in it.
And honestly I don't like Jonathan Groff as Smith - I don't think he acted bad or anything but he just doesn't fit the role - he doesn't have that intimidating aura and voice that Hugo Weaving had.
At least with Morpheus they didn't exactly replace him as we're aware he's not really the same Morpheus. On the other hand I wish he would just do his own thing instead of trying to imitate the real Morpheus so often.
And the saddest thing is that there are a lot of good ideas in the movie - I like the future setting with good and bad machines, I like the concept of programs interacting with the real world, I even like the character of Bugs. Honestly if they leaned into these elements this could've been an actually good movie. Hell just drop the old cast and create something new. Oh well.

There's a great segment in "A Room Of One's Own" about how early women's art was unavoidably shaped by women's experience of patriarchy, and there wouldn't be truly great art by women until women got to a place of safety enough to make art that is not marked by their own trauma. I think about that a lot with "meta" art.

The reason all the action has no choreography and is just rooms randomly exploding into rubble while characters casually float around is because action scenes require the most reshoots and time that they didnt want to spend on the movie. All the jabs at WB are just real life complaints they had and were publicly vocal about it seems like the directors purposely made the movie bomb so that WB couldnt force them to make another sequel. To me it seems that it deals with trauma and loss and the idea of the idealized life and relationship in a really interesting way, and a lot of that kind of clicked into place during the Merovingian scene and with the uneasy alliance between neo-smith and neo, and how they both fought for what they understood to be real in that moment without regard to what might be “proper” (humans against machine). I felt it had a good statement on self-identity and self-affirmation and the rejection of a hurtful attempt at conformity. Definitely the best study into identity and mental health in my opinion, but that’s just how I read it at the time I saw it. I do need to rewatch it
