@@SARTORIALTALKS Do you think we can educate (or enlighten) people this way of life? (You mention choice, which sounds almost as if it's a product of free will.)
Magnificent Mr. Jacomet! Your sentiment and passion was captivating! At times, I believe because I try to be gentle and kind to others, and focus on others, that they take my kindness for weakness. Then my wife tells me, it is for the very reason that I am kind and gentle and that I always put her first is the reason she fell in love with me. When we are going out on a date on an elegant occasion, I always ask her what color dress is she wearing. When I wear my suit, I attempt to wear a necktie that matches the color of her dress. When I do this she smiles and I sense her pride in me, because she knows that my heart’s desire is to compliment her and have her be the focus of attention.
And also, in return, your wife also exalts you for being a considerate and refined individual. It's amazing to see a couple compliment one another because it shows genuine union.
@@SARTORIALTALKS oh thanks for the reply sir.My point being the way you have used language makes it sound poetic and hence someone with a poetic incline appreciates your sentences sir.All the best to you too,Raghav
Spot-on about Black Tie. When I was younger, it was described to me as, "Formal wear is the canvas upon which your date can shine." Whatever color and style she wears looks well next to formal attire.
"A Gentleman guards his behavior. He understands that he must have integrity. This means that a gentleman does the right thing even when no one is watching”
Hugo I was hanging on every word of this. Honestly, such an interesting and thought provoking video. These perspectives and facts are important because the concept of being a gentlemen was really at the core of Western European culture, and helped to shape style, art, science, politics and society throughout Europe. This is especially true in British culture as well, where chivalry was still a concept that was propagated up to the First World War and arguably up to the Second. Unfortunately it is much less so now and has been commercialised rather than discussed for its virtues. This is why I am such a fan of the British style, because to me it always has seemed virtuous even moral, to dress and act quietly, discreetly but still with authority. Thanks again. Josh.
In so many words a gentleman must also possess a powerful spiritual aura (selfless and centered). Attention seeking behavior turns into narcissism which has plagued America.
I love the way you speak with such passion on a topic. Thank you for your insight, especially your definition of being a gentleman. Much appreciated. I really need to get my hands on your book too!
A true gentleman is never self-proclaimed but is anointed by his peers. I am grateful to you, Monsieur Jacomet, for your eloquence and depth of knowledge on the matter. Thank you for this detailed explanation. This is quite an education!
Wow, back in my high school days all teachers and staff addressed the students as gentlemen. It was an all boys school, wonderful to now know the history behind it and your opinion on the use of the term. Very well done, and thank you!
Dear M. Jacomet, French history, culture and etiquette have always had me interested. To the extent of cultivating a love for learning French too. Your contribution to making people appreciate the finer things in life is inspiring. Enchanté de faire votre connaissance!
Excellent - “you choose to be a gentleman”. A very touching commentary on women. Spot on. A Gene Kelly said - his goal is to make his partner look good.
Hugo, you are truly an officer and a gentleman! This video was shared with all the men I know....thank you for addressing such important food for thought as masculinity and the art of being a gentleman are under constant subtle pressure and subversive attack in a politically correct and radical society that seeks to dismantle all traditional "social constructs" that have dignified and delighted many.

Dear Hugo, I’m a professor of the history of international law, teaching this semester a course on the resolution of ethnic conflicts. I’ve recently used this video to demonstrate to my students the qualities which diplomatic negotiators would have to bring forth in order to succeed in their task of ameliorating conflict - these gentlemanly qualities you talk about: kindness, providing all parties the possibility of feeling at ease and comfortable with the negotiator, the negotiator’s ability to keep confidentiality, and protect the weaknesses of the parties - yet always celebrate their strengths and good sides. Thank you for your work. You might have perhaps not imagined - but your impact even reaches into our field of diplomacy in ethnic conflicts. And yes - dressing well as mediators and negotiators (albeit WITHOUT being judgmental about the dressing habits of others) also increases credibility - and respect !
