Another superb piece ViceJP. Being on unemployment in the EU5 is paradise compared to this, these people show admirable resilience. Also, Gavin is *the coolest*. Inspiring.
Gavin almost made me cry. He's the shit. His opinions of being a migrant with artistic tendencies, coming to the city alone, filial piety, the "importance of light within the darkness" and what you need to suffer to be successful is touching and a point that Chinese youth have that American kids lack.
Like all jobs, If u don't know someone in related job field or have some sort of connections, It really depends on quite a bit of luck. If you think looking for job is hard in US, it's likely harder in Beijing. As a matter of fact, I'm certain he already looked into jobs that requires english speaker. We are only human & not so much different from one another. Why do you think u can thought of something he hasn't thought of? =/ Sorry if that comes off a bit harsh.
Terry Chao I wasn't trying to say something he hadn't thought of. I was trying to give him a compliment. Are you saying he's tried and will never get a job because he doesn't know someone? I think that is kinda of harsh. He seemed like a positive person. I hope he finds a good job where he can support himself and help his family and be happy.
Very interesting video. It's nice to see these young guys being so optimistic despite their awful living/working conditions. It really makes me feel grateful for the stuff that I have.
i am a chinese from beijing. This is actually mainly caused by the rapid urbanisation of china. Most people that lives in these cheap underground rooms are from rural areas. They couldn't afford a decent place to live in cities like Beijing. but they still don't wanna go back to their villages. because they believe their future is brighter in the city. As a matter of fact, i consider this is a sign of progress, not only because china is becoming more urbanised but also wages are rapidly rising in all areas of the country if you ever lived in china for more than 3 years. you don't have to agree with me, it just my own opinion.
I live in Beijing and never realize how happy I am having my own place until watch this video. No matter how unequal the society is, there always are people like Gavin, and I think they are the true hope of the country. Just hope they're not hurt too badly by the dark side before having chance of success.
TIL the will of the poor in china is the complete opposite of the majority of poor Americans. Here in the states I see a lot of poor people that are extremely disrespectful and act like society owes them something. This was a very enlightening video. Thank you.
I agree 100%. These conditions in China are absolutely horrid, yet they thrive. Humbles me to see these people just taking it, and adapting to their circumstances.
True, if you compare the poor of both nations today. However China is in a different growth period then the US currently. I think if you compared the mentality of the poor of the US around 1900-1920's it would be similar to that of the modern day Chinese poor.
How did that last guy get such good English with low education and underground living? Does he work with foreigners? I guess I will have to wait for the English version of this to find out.
His English is alright. However, low employment rates among even undergraduate and master students is real factor in China now due to too many educated people but with low abilities and talent. They need to fight or cannot survive in Beijing Shanghai. Although they fight hard, it does not mean they can get a better life in Chinese society. In addition, registered birth city could control their whole life because it is very difficult to get equal treatment with other Beijing Shanghai residences because government need to protect original residences and control population in such big cities. It is unfair for them, but government has no choice. And, Anyway, even u guys say "fight! Gevin!", he never see ur comments because youtube is blocked by Chinese government.
Adirondack13 Are you dumb or something? If you look at the way China or India is growing theyre eventually gonna take over the world. Not to mention more than half of our shit is made in China
Not all that different from the US and Japan as far as getting a job in your field of study goes. Capitalism is so damn broken at this point I doubt it can be fixed.
Yes I was really impressed too! I wonder if he studied something? Would be great to know what, maybe someone could offer him a better paying job. If he’s an engineer (mechanical/electrical, doesn’t matter), I could maybe try to get him a job for a german company. But by his appearance and way of thinking I think he’s more into arts than engineering. Would be amazing to hear from him!
22:10 typical jump ups of society who we're born from the sediments tumbling its way up. But still facing those odds to gain something in life makes you wanna boast.
I was surprised by Gavins fairly good english. But he must be one of the highly educated graduates who couldn't find a job. I've lived in pretty tight places in my life but i imagine its alot worse being underground. Sometimes when you think you have a crappy life, there are people like these rat tribes who have it far worse.
This is so fascinating... sad, but fascinating. Its like that story about the people that live in the sewers of Las Vegas -- so sad that our world is like this...

ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%B8%AD%E8%8F%AF%E4%BA%BA%E6%B0%91%E5%85%B1%E5%92%8C%E5%9B%BD%E3%81%AE%E6%88%B8%E7%B1%8D%E5%88%B6%E5%BA%A6#%E8%BE%B2%E6%9D%91%E6%88%B8%E7%B1%8D%E3%81%8B%E3%82%89%E9%83%BD%E5%B8%82%E6%88%B8%E7%B1%8D%E3%81%B8%E3%81%AE%E8%BB%A2%E7%B1%8D_%E9%83%BD%E5%B8%82%E8%A6%8F%E6%A8%A1%E5%88%A5%E3%81%AB%E5%BF%9C%E3%81%98%E3%81%9F%E5%88%B6%E9%99%90%E7%B7%A9%E5%92%8C%E5%8F%8A%E3%81%B3%E6%92%A4%E5%BB%83

Awesome documentary. Won't see this on TV.
The last guys' english was very good. He should try for a job that needs an english speaker.

The last guy was amazing. He was spot on about what he had to say about sucess
