My mum used to take me and my brothers all over the place to model railway exhibitions. Happy childhood memories.

Years ago an old gentleman who was extremely good at modelling, gave me two tips for an exhibition layout. They were as follows, No matter how big or small your layout is, keep something moving at all times, even if it is a little bit of back and forth shunting. Because as he said, people get bored really quick with nothing to watch. The second tip, make sure your buildings touch the floor! As he said there is nothing more annoying than a fantastically modelled structure or building, yet there is a gap at the bottom where it has not been bedded in property. I must admit, that really bugs me too. That said, these layouts are masterpieces and true labours of love, fantastic!

Easy fix for the buildings touching the floor thing... Once placed, use ground scatter (sand/grass flock etc, whatever blends with the ground) until the gaps are filled or covered. Nice simple quick fix... But couldn't agree more, so disappointing when glaring errors like that are just left there...

And another tip I would always add when building a model railway, an absolute must... Paint the rails! Especially N gauge. Those shiny brass rails stand out really badly if you don't paint grime/rust on them... I have seen layouts at exhibitions where they didn't bother painting their rails...

Love N gauge because you can fit an awful lot into a small space without having to compromise on unrealistic train consists!

What a fantastic layout. The scale allows for realistic train lengths. The models are amazing.

I see a train there with 40 wagons - (17:39) what are such train lengths like on gradients in N gauge?
