Why you should choose Liberal Arts Colleges 🌷

  • 5 years ago, I chose Scripps over UC Berkeley and UCLA. Having the unique perspective of going to both a small liberal arts college and a bigger research school has made me realize what defines a good school is beyond prestige in name and college rankings. The purpose of this video is NOT to pit schools against each other, I think they’re all great schools. My main goal of this video is to give more exposure to colleges that the majority of people probably haven’t heard of. Hoping to share lessons that took ME 5 years to learn... #liberalarts #claremont

    I love your insights into the small LAC v.s. big research university experience! It's so important to keep these factors in mind since college is SO EXPENSIVE. People should be getting value out of the $360K price tag of college, but it's a lot harder to do that at a big research university where support isn't always present since emphasis is placed on research rather than undergraduate education.

    What an inspiring video! My 17 years old has big dreams and planning to aplly to USC/UCLA/NYU/Georgetown and some backup universities. She would be out of state for CA, but loves the LA area so much. She is just a big fan of big cities. I have been encouraging her to look into Liberal Arts Colleges too. I will have to share this video with her. Thank you for making this!!

    Scripps ‘15!!!! I didn’t study STEM but now am working in big tech. I really benefited from the Claremont consortium, but most importantly, Scripps and my classmates helped me build my confidence. I attribute my education to a lot of my successes post-grad. Liberal arts colleges are really underrated, but understand it is out of reach financially for a lot of folks. It’s still worth to consider it an option if you are able! Nice vid! ❤

    The Claremont Colleges are just as good as the UC schools (if not better) academically...students at the Claremont Colleges are the best of the best students. People shouldn't worry about people not recognizing the name of any of the Claremont Colleges, or other comparable schools such as Amherst, Bates...I've found that if those who matter (the people doing the hiring) aren't familiar with a school, they'll look it up. Once one looks up one of the five Claremont Colleges, they'll see that the applicant is first rate. And YES...Hao Huang is AWESOME!...he's such a cool guy and a great pianist!! Excellent video!!

    Would it be a good idea for people with social anxiety disorder to go to liberal art colleges?😢I’ve always thought that it would be great to study in a small college until one of my friends said you’ll have limited privacy there since you’ll be familiar with every single person in the college.

      When I was at the Claremont Colleges, I definitely found myself bumping into people all the time, the way I never seemed to once I started at Columbia University. I do have to say though - even though it WAS a small class, there were definitely a good amount of people I still haven't gotten a chance to meet...
      I'd say it's up to personal preference - I personally really liked how small and tight-knit the college felt because it felt like there were a lot more resources and support accessible to everyone ❤️

    Hey! I am in at Scripps, but have seen a lot of controversial opinions on Scripps. I am also interested in engineering or the EEP programs. How was the career center, or resources for life after college? That is my biggest concern (and getting internships).

    • @meloteay
      @meloteay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      hey! thanks for leaving a comment - are you potentially interested in doing the 3+2 program? and I really loved the support I was given by the career center! They helped me prepare for my first ever corporate interviews with the mock interview programs they have and I actually still regularly connect with Scripps' career center. Feel free to leave more questions if you have more!

    On the financial aspect. You mentioned that Scripps could be about the same as UC. I assume you mean in-state tuition at UC since you were a CA resident. Did you receive a scholarship at Scripps or offered any at UC? Did cost play any role in your decision making?

    • @meloteay
      @meloteay  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ah yes! Now that I think about it, my friends who told me that, I believe they were CA residents so, yes referring to in-state tuition. I received a merit scholarship at Scripps and with some other outside scholarships I got, I decided to come to Scripps. I also worked in residential life to help with housing expenses.

    Thank you for making this video. It's very informative. Did you stay in the dorm even you lived only 20 minutes away? We live about 30 minutes away and want to save dorm & meal plan costs. But I know dorm experience is also important. Looking forward to your point of view.

    hey!! i'm a hs senior considering applying to scripps, do you have any tips on finding specific details abt stem in scripps (or in general) for the why scripps essay? thx for the video :)

    • @meloteay
      @meloteay  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey yes! For learning more specific details about STEM in scripps or in general I would google search “scripps college stem”
      You should have a bunch of Scripps and stem related links that pop up like STEM archives. I think reading through the articles can give you a good idea of the experiences and insights on what it’s like to study STEM at Scripps! Feel free to ask more questions if you have any and best wishes with the application ❤️

    For the dual degree program, is this kind of program common in Claremont colleges? What is the ratio for Scripps students go to graduate school? Thank you!

    • @meloteay

      Thanks for commenting! When you say common are you referring to students participating in them? Or if multiple colleges offer them?

    • @meloteay
      @meloteay  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@hexise when I was doing the program (and from what I heard about other years), there’s high interest during the first year of college in the amount of people wanting to do 3+2 but students tend to either switch majors or choose not to do the program and as the 3rd year comes up. Hope this helps, please let me know if you have more questions!

      Hey thanks so much for watching and excited to hear you're interested in Scripps! I have a couple friends who are non-stem majors at Scripps and I heard about them going into consulting or investment banking. Scripps has a strong alumni network and I often see career talks from these people come to our campus!! These events give current students the chance to network. Hopefully this gives some insight - Feel free to ask more questions!
