I worked for a guy that was a cross of Rodney Dangerfield and Jacky Gleason. He wouldn't do comedy because he was a flyby night roofer 😂 He was afraid he'd get busted.
Agree, and would add 1988 to your peak list. As for me, I spent nearly that entire three years, and much of the earlier 1980's at sea in the Navy. Years later I would reflect, recognize, and enjoy the music, movies and some TV of the mid-to-late 1980's.
My favorite line from Back to School was at the end, when Rodney (as Thornton Melon) is giving a speech to the graduating class: "You gotta look out for number one, but don't step in number two."
@@starguy2718 The whole movie is full of Rodney's hilarious one-liners - like in the scene with a bunch of knock-out co-eds in the hot tub. Rodney: "What's your favorite subject?" Co-ed: "Poetry." Rodney: "Maybe you can help me straighten out my Longfellow."
I miss Rodney but I also missed his show and this time. I was in college and after a long day of classes and work I'd come home to my basement apartment which was illegal in New Jersey and get to see who Dave had on. This was a magical night!
I’ve never seen this clip until now. I’ve seen a few clips of RD on Carson (too young to see them live). Rodney showed Dave lots of respect. As did Dave showed Rodney. Class act to both of them.
Rodney was my neighbor. His real top ten: 10. Hitting on my widowed mother in the elevator (he wanted her BAD like most of NYC) 9. Walking around the neighborhood in his ROBE 8. Having his tour bus show up at 3am and park on the street outside 7. Ignoring everyone, who respected his privacy and ignored him back 6. Get annoyed with me when I'd quote his films or commercials 5. Joking around the doormen he knew since the building opened in 1964 when he rented it, long before his fame 4. Dote on his daughter, as he was widowed 3. Performing at catch a rising star (in his Robe, as Chris Rock noted) 2. Giving young comedians like Sam Kinison a break 1. Spending evenings and weekends at his comedy club, Dangerfield's (60th and First).
It was shocking to see how many young people didn't really know much about Rodney Dangerfield. The guy is an absolute legend. Don't forget that he had a successful Rap song as well.
Imagine living in a time where RODNEY DANGERFIELD could walk on a late night talk show ?? Yes it was GD awesome to be alive in such a time. The complete opposite of what it's like today.
@@patreekotime4578 - Yes DUH!! Most of the ppl watching on TV weren't expecting Rodney. That's the point. Try to keep up. Explaining the obvious is exhausting

I thought Letterman was at his best when he was on NBC after Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. It suited his style better there. Didn't like him so much when he moved to CBS. Love Dangerfield. here, btw!
Rodney was hilarious right to the end. He went into the hospital for heart bypass surgery in 2004 and was asked by a news reporter how long he anticipated being hospitalized.
