The Girls Who Fled To Syria: Groomed By The Islamic State

  • In February 2015, three teenage schoolgirls left the comfort of their homes in East London and traveled to Syria to join the self-styled Islamic State (IS). Around 60 women and girls are thought to have made the same journey from Britain.
    The story of their disappearance dominated the UK press for weeks and the blame game inevitably began to hunt out whose fault it was. When the families of Amira Abase, Shamima Begum, and Kadiza Sultana found out that the police had been interviewing the trio about another girl from their school who had already joined IS, the case was picked up for investigation by the government. But soon certain sections of the press would turn on the families themselves.
    VICE News gained intimate access to the father of one girl, Amira, and joined him as he dealt with the press and parliament to find out what it's like for those left behind by the tragic choices of their loved ones.

    • @misslen575
      @misslen575 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@thisguyrighthere3 that's what the average person would think, but having a barely twenty year old little sister, who is not only extremely impressionable and gullible but have been scammed out of thousands before, I can safely say that she would rather choose to leave the comforts of her home to starve, pinch pennies, live with strangers, all to hang with her "friends" (and also study her art course but she's on the verge of giving up) she also spends way more than she needs to because she sponsors her broke friend, and she's making more and more bad choices like deciding to live out of the hostel which would cost twice more and all so that she can live with her friend, and it's not even for her bf who is overseas. We came from a bankrupted family and she could have studied her course at home but doesn't want to, I understand of wanting to be independent but it's not very independent when you expect your parent to pay thousands for your charity.
      She's always been on the dim side but I've only recently found out how much money my mom's been giving her and I'm about to give the biggest lecture in my life on money. Anyway, mind you this is all for friends, can you imagine if it was her bf that was enticing her to travel to where he was and with their religion to boot his brainwashing? She'd probably be gone right now. My parents have never hit us, never been strict about grades with us, and only ask us to help out with housework occasionally, and that's already making my sister feel depressed and suffocating here. Can you just imagine kids from strict families and how willing they would just throw away every comfort they have because of their desire to get away or pursue love? I'm able to sympathize with them. And being able to sympathize with kids is one of the first step to getting them to change their mind of being adamant about leaving for stupid reasons. To them, leaving is the easy choice after "suffering" for almost two decades. They just need to know it's the wrong choice and there are other options.

Oh have no sympathy no one kidnapped those women they are just women that do not think about the consequences absolutely no critical thinking going on in their brain. Whether it’s Isis or the alt-right or sex trafficking or whatever type of cults...it rarely is about the religion or the values of the group they claim to stand for. People join these organisations because they are insecure, they want to belong somewhere and feel valued. The recruiters of these groups are good at finding vulnerable people and making them feel special and like the group needs them. Teenagers are often the perfect demographic to find gullible and easily manipulated people. I would be shocked and disappointed if someone I know joined a group like Isis, but yeah, if they are as young as those girls, I’d blame the recruiters first.

      Manuel R - She’s from England, not the US. And I completely disagree. The treatment of these girls should be the exact same treatment that the Allied forces and Nuremberg gave women back in the mid-1940’s who were married to 3rd Reich military men.
      Yes, I realize they left their country but they weren’t leaving their country to become terrorists. They weren’t leaving their country because they hated the UK. They were told that they could come check out this amazing place, “an Islamic Disneyland” that was the closest thing to paradise here on earth. They were told if they liked it, they could stay and become a bride of heroic, chivalrous patriot. And they were told they would please God and become so close to him - that this was a test of their commitment and love for him.
      These girls were recruited in the same way cults recruit people. But it was also so romanticized. They were groomed in the same way a coach or teacher grooms a 15 year old student.
      And, yes, the rhetoric of ISIS is bonkers, but so is the rhetoric of white nationalists. But rhetoric isn’t illegal. Marrying isn’t illegal. If they committed a crime, then they must answer for it. But if they didn’t, they should be de-programmed and brought home.

The only thing I found was that he went to so called “extremist/radical” rallies which after digging turned out to be held against the treatment of Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia after the had human rights violation. I don’t see how that is radical or extremist. Also I did not find any article saying he was arrested or suspected of anything. All the articles are just stating that he went to extremist and radical rallies.

    When you are that young, your mind has not fully developed yet. Your views, personality, character are volatile. You are easily influenced. I know because I was their age 3 years ago. You know too, if you haven't forgotten.
    This would've been compounded by what looks like a more secluded lifestyle than normal, reducing diversity of influences. The parents may have given her Islamic "ideals" but why do you think anyone living in London would wish their daughter to move to what was the most oppressive place on Earth? I don't think a Muslim would move away from a culture and region similar to the one they wanted to send their daughter to. Despite the backwardness of the religion in its traditional forms, I am very skeptical that these parents wanted anything but the return of their daughter and the return to a normal life.

    I guess this case (the parents and her daughter) are one of these "typical" cases where the parents keep a very strict athmosphere at home based on the values they group up with in their home country which is far away from the reality if the country they live in now. There daughter through school is very exposed to the reality their parents try to shut their eyes from and in her struggels to keep the "at-home-reality" and the "life-outside-home-reality" alligned starts her own reality and individuality which she (kind of has to) keep from her parents which makes her a stranger from them - the fact that they really seem to believe that their 15 yr old daughter was still afraid of the darker is one indicator for me (either they made it up or they didn't know their daughter)

They deal with it in silence, and just want to push it away and “let it go” instead of confronting and expressing their emotions through sadness and tears. Its obvious this father truly loves and misses his daughter by the way he pushes it away so hard. Daughters are the jewels of a father’s life.
