Bt lack of maintainence.

There was an old narrow gauge line from Nanu-Oya to Ragala through Nuwara-Eliya. That is no longer exists. That would also have been a great train ride if it survived.
Being a sri lankan and someone who worked in the railway industry i have taken this train ride with friends, family many times now living in Canada it brings back all those memories and shows how beautiful sri lanka is🥲
Wow such a beautiful station and lush green surrounding reminds me of Indian Railways in early 90s when we had manual signaling. Now that everything is automated in India we don't get to see such switches. India and Srilanka have long term strategic partnership and India Exports Diesel Electric Multiple Units (DEMU) Trainsets and other trainsets manufactured at ICF Chennai India to Srilanka. Great train. What the "conductor" was doing is something done in the US in the 18th and into the 20th centuries. It's the way mail was collected and passed from one station to another or to the US Post Office. The collection and giving the "bag" was done at the Post Office Car, more towards the part after the coal car rather than from the front. Eventually it became somewhat automated with a "hook" on the outside of the car and the bag would be hung from a device so that when the hook on the car would catch it, the bag would come into the Postal Car. Interesting way to transfer something to our from a moving train.
In this case, it is a railway token used in single-line routes. The train driver has to discard the current token and pickup up a new one at every station/section. It gives the clearance to proceed further on the line.

British started trains in India and Srilanka almost at the same time(within a decade).Though the main Indian stations like Bombay VT,Chennai Central and Egmore, Howrah/Calcutta were all started in the late 1860s70s. Still India has the old Trains running with actually old Engines and other equipments like in Ooty,Darjeeling. All routes were to transport Hill produce like Tea/Coffee,Spices, and of course the timber/Teak used for ship building, and for construction of palaces, and Bridges in various colonies of the Europeans! The systems were same, and even now many stations the old original buildings are retained as Heritage. The Station masters will explain how the communication system worked with Magnatic dynamos producing power, and signals based on heavy ball exchanged by the Tain with Station staff, as shown in this video. Vist OOTY Railway station or Coonoor ,India for a real experience !

That's not a tablet but a token which has private number and gives authority to pass into next block section. A block section is part in railway line which is protected by stations on either end of it.
The person who drives locomotive engine is called globally either a "Motor man" or a "Loco Pilot". Conductor is a person who checks the tickets and takes care of the passengers. I think this you tuber seems to be a confused man. God bless him.
