  • Home Alone is becoming a bit of a Christmas tradition on this channel.. I hope you don't mind. The analysis isn't my greatest but hopefully it does the job.
    Take a shot every time I say 'excitement' or a related synonym in this analysis and let me know if you make it to the end...
    As I say in the video, Merry Christmas to you all, and I hope 2023 has been a fulfilling year for you, and that 2024 is even better. Keep smiling!
    -P
    I ended up re-transcribing this entire piece in full score for another project, and in doing so found a few errors. My apologies.. can you tell I was in a rush? (I also blame Eddie Karam's handwriting) Here's a list of corrections:
    3M1:
    - The G in bar 4 in the Basses sounds 8vb.
    3M3:
    - the last crotchet beat in the string pizz. is a D7 chord, not a D chord - from bottom to top: D-F# (celli), C (violas), D-F#-D (violins)
    - Synth at the beginning of bar 9 is a quaver - not a crotchet
    - Trumpet III should be slurred like trombones in bar 19
    - Lower voice of the flute line on the 3rd crotchet beat of bar 27 should be Eb - C - Bb - Ab (so forming some brief parallel 5ths)
    - Trumpet line in bar 33 should include Gb on the second crotchet beat and the Ab on the third beat should be a Gb
    - In bar 37, 3 Oboes play, not 2.
    - In bar 62, the final crotchet beat trem. in the woodwinds is not as written - it is from Ab - Eb to Bb - C in octaves.
    - In bar 65, the quaver in the horns is an Eb - not a Bb.

    I love Williams blending of basically everything. You've got clear classical music but he seamlessly blends in some Broadway and Jazz. The way he uses those without them sticking out of the score too much is masterful

    Just got back from NYC. He covered a ton of ground in that montage!!! Great reduction and analysis.. is it really Christmastime until we hear John Williams' epic take on the season??

    This is treasure! The Bernstein/Gershwin influence in the first part is something I've been eager for a long time to get some insight on. One of my very favourite cues from the movie. Pity that the sight-seeing segment ultimately got replaced by a jingle-bell rock tune. Thanks, and Merry Christmas!

    • @patricksuiter
      @patricksuiter  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks!! The influence is something that, as you can probably tell, I didn’t have enough space to convincingly explore with score examples - that would fit into a more long form video. But I’m hoping what I wrote was a little helpful anyway. It’s one of my favourites too. Merry Christmas!

    • @patricksuiter
      @patricksuiter  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@cinemascore-along Oh I didn't think nobody would notice - I probably should have mentioned it though in my writing.. I'm guessing the shot was shorter when Williams originally scored it. My thoughts with these restorations are to try and leave the music intact and edit the film around it (not the other way around as in your channel). Your restoration is great too, it's nice to explore different ways Williams may have intended the score to play

    • @cinemascore-along
      @cinemascore-along 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@patricksuiter That's fair. My objection to that theory is that it does cut that shot pretty short to the point of ending on a somewhat odd frame. You don't really get the full view of Manhattan you do in the final version, and very little of the Twin Towers is visible in way that, to me, isn't really satisfying presentationally. My guess is, had they used this cue, that it would've been artificially extended (as I tried) and/or the montage itself was edited differently, and then was reedited as it appears in the final film when they decided to go with Arlene Love's song.
      Either way, Love your stuff. Your analyses are the most thourough and passion-filledof any reductonist channel on this platform. Keep up the great work!

    • @patricksuiter
      @patricksuiter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@cinemascore-along Yes that’s true - of course it’s possible that the suspended chord at the end still accompanied the zoom out shot, even if a bit unusual. Perhaps the sequence wasn’t finalised when Williams scored it? Who knows. I do think the moment where Kevin snaps the picture fits quite well though. All we can do is speculate really. Hopefully the sketches for this cue make their way out at some point so we can take a look at the intended cue points.
      Thanks very much for the kind words, I really appreciate it :))

    I've always marveled at how many individually recorded pieces Williams puts into singular cues, but was it really necessary to do for the first minute and a half here? Just in terms of time and effort and editing, what is the point of separating one short sequence into two not-entirely-complicated sections?

    • @patricksuiter
      @patricksuiter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s honestly a great question that I don’t have a good answer for - it is certainly a strange choice. Perhaps Williams wanted to record the part of the cue with a large number of players separately from the one with very little? Could possibly have been more efficient with time at recording sessions. It could also potentially be that the New York skyline section wasn’t finalised when Williams wrote the rest of the track - hence having to write it separately. This is just speculation of course :)

  • @drumming_cat

    Doesn't the scene from when he's in the taxi have a song playing with saxophone, not the orchestra?

    • @patricksuiter
      @patricksuiter  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yes - I mentioned that in the video, some of this music was replaced by All Alone on Christmas by Darlene Love. This video is an analysis of Williams' original intentions :)
